00:00team and which was devastating to part of our state and so one thing we've
00:05tried to do is is get people ready I mean this is this is it's not it's not
00:12what everybody up here can do they can do something after the fact if you're
00:15alive but if you're not alive if you haven't taken care of yourself if you
00:18haven't prepared there's less that this whole group up here can do and everybody
00:22up here is here to take care of you first of all I want to thank Tony how
00:27many years have we done this yeah so Tony now has 30 locations in the state
00:34so and he's got you know you can look up here he's got all this stuff you need
00:39you he sells all of it the and he's got a nice group of people you know
00:47everywhere on bunch of places all around the state he's come actually I live in
00:50Naples Florida he's coming to Naples he said he got some property over there so
00:54I want to thank what Tony does what his team does but part of their job is to
00:58help you get prepared so everybody up here doesn't have to help you that's
01:02that's the whole case all up it's all up to you as an individual I want to thank
01:06the former mayor and now congressman Carlos Jimenez the we actually we
01:12actually overlapped almost exactly when I was governor and did a great job did
01:17a great job running the city Miami we were we in all of our disasters he did
01:22a great job we and he's responsible for a lot of things the mayor here in
01:27contrast some other places is also responsible for the airport responsible
01:30for the port and so they've got a lot of responsibilities to get things done and
01:34but he did a great job is doing a great job there I want to recognize some other
01:37people up here lieutenant Eddie Gonzalez is here we've got the fire marshal
01:42Carlos Diaz we got Commissioner Kevin Cabrera we got a deputy fire chief Ray
01:46Mullen we got the captain Javier Hernandez we got the chief Paul Garcia
01:51we've got individuals from the Red Cross so when we we've got so what what
02:00what what's supposed to happen is is we end up open up relief centers and Irma
02:06was the biggest one I was governor we had 700 relief centers opened up and so
02:11they went to what we did was we start out the National Guard man them but over
02:14time what happens is the Red Cross takes over most most of them so what it's
02:19important that you help the Red Cross they they do it they do a great job and
02:23we got a couple people in the Red Cross Juarez Martinez is here and Monica
02:27Rusconi is here they just do an unbelievable job and there's a lot of
02:31other groups that come in after the fact after these bad storms they'll come in
02:34feed people they'll come in and help with shelters they do a lot of things so
02:38these not-for-profits matter I also want to recognize Gloria who's here from from
02:43Mario Diaz-Balart's office the you know so we as a team and so Carlos the Carlos
02:54Lincoln Mario Ileana and now Maria we've all worked together we share we your our
03:00job is to help everybody we all have offices we share resources so if you
03:05ever need anything call any of our office and we'll be helpful so here's a
03:08way to think about number one the most important person is you so there's a
03:15variety of websites you can go to the county has website the state has website
03:19the website the federal level is ready.gov go and look at what you should
03:23do that's step one step to do it get the get the radio get the batteries get the
03:30extra water get the extra food get your documents in a safe place get your
03:34medicine because what you don't know is will you lose power you might will you
03:39not have communication you might it might take you a few days to get power
03:42back on if you're for a rural area it'll take you longer than that it might take
03:46you a while for you know one of the communications couple like Verizon or
03:49AT&T or whatever to come back up because there's a lot of stuff that might be
03:54down after a storm so number one go to one of the websites number two is go buy
03:59the stuff and get a plan get a plan don't take a chance number three watch
04:03the news the local news is your best source the weather channels a great
04:07source but follow the news and then what's going to happen all these
04:11individuals up here are going to tell you what to do do it all right you want
04:16to stay alive do it right if you look at my whole goal when I was government is
04:22nobody die the you can rebuild your house you can't rebuild a life I said so
04:28many times my grandkids can say it because you cannot rebuild you cannot
04:32rebuild your life we I think in in Ian primarily old close to where I live they
04:36lost 150 people that's devastating who was I mean no one we don't want to lose
04:41a family member now one thing the state's done to help is they'd have
04:44sales tax holidays June 1 to June 14th August 24th and to September 6th so take
04:50advantage of it and they'll help you here it'll make it they'll help you
04:54they'll tell you what is tax-free so take advantage of it so you can save some
05:21remember there's a lot of different ways you can things you can do in caso de una
05:25tormenta man and gas a atento a las noticias y sigue las instrucciones de los
05:30officiales de seguridad y de guesión de emergencias yo tengo nueve oficinas en
05:36la florida leases para ayudar a los floridanos si necesita ayuda con fima
05:41SPR cualquier agencia federal puede contactar me oficinas Christina is here
05:47somewhere she's she's unbelievable in el evento en el estado or visit our me
05:52sitio web rick scott punto senate punto gov como si gay digo puedes reconstruir
05:58tu casa pero no puedes reconstruir tu vida so it's great to be here thank you
06:03again Tony now my turn it over to Carlos
06:08thank you senator so thank you governor and again it's always a pleasure to be
06:12with our former governor and current senator Rick Scott you know as he said
06:17June 1st is the beginning of hurricane season so you need to start to prepare
06:21now now is the time to prepare for the hurricane the Hurricane Center has said
06:26they expect this to be a very active hurricane season last year we had an El
06:31Niño which kind of kept the hurricanes away they expect La Nina to come in
06:36sometime during the summer which actually is not good for us La Nina is
06:41not good El Niño is good for us for hurricanes La Nina not so good and so
06:45they expect a very active hurricane season and a La Nina hey we need to get
06:50prepared like right now and as the governor said the senator said there's a
06:54lot of things here that that you need to look at to prepare for yes get
07:00batteries make sure your flashlights are working your generators make sure your
07:05generators are working and in the case of a storm if you do need your generator
07:09never operate a generator indoors you get carbon monoxide poison never operate
07:14a generator close to an open window again you can get carbon monoxide
07:18poisoning on the water side we have bottled water but guess what after a
07:24storm unless there's a boil water order in your area open the tap it's safe to
07:32drink Miami-Dade water it's pretty good actually it's one of the best stuff in
07:35the world okay and so I drink 305 water okay I don't buy bottled water and so
07:41you can do that and actually also that takes a lot of pressure off of your
07:48first responders to have to bring you bottled water there's a lot of logistics
07:52involved in bringing water to you if you don't have to don't just drink drink
07:58drink tap water it's fine okay it it won't harm you if you don't have a boil
08:04water order and so planning you have to plan all right and so if you live in an
08:11evacuation zone and there are plenty of areas in Miami-Dade County you live
08:15close to the coast there's plenty of areas in Miami-Dade County that you may
08:18be asked to evacuate well the time to plan where you're gonna go if you're
08:23asked to evacuate is right now where you gonna go are you going to go to a
08:27friend's house are you gonna go to a family's house are you gonna have to go
08:29further north are you gonna have to go somewhere else plan it right now it
08:34doesn't won't do you any good to say well gee I've been asked to evacuate I
08:38don't know where I got to go that's why you need to plan right now and there are
08:42large areas of Miami-Dade County that are subject to an evacuation order
08:47depending on the severity of the storm and so the people that we have around us
08:54firefighters police officers public works officials you know after a storm
08:59they'll be there to try to clean everything up and try to get to you so
09:02you have to be self-sufficient for about 70 at least 72 hours three days we ask
09:08you to be self-sufficient because it depending on the severity of the storm
09:12it may take us up to three days to get to you remember what happened with
09:16Hurricane Andrew all the street signs were blown away all the debris it took a
09:20long time for rescue workers emergency personnel to get to different parts of
09:26of the county and so again we ask you to be self-sufficient for at least three
09:31days plus if you're self-sufficient that means that that our emergency workers
09:36can actually go to those people that need help those are the ones we want to
09:40that we want to really focus in on finally if you have special needs if
09:46you're a special needs person dial 3-1-1 and get registered Miami-Dade County
09:51will make accommodations for you they'll pick you up they'll take you to a
09:53special shelter if you're going to go to a shelter find out where your closest
09:57shelter is if you're going to have a pet bring a pet which are the shelters that
10:01are pet friendly shelters and so again the time to do all of that is right now
10:06you're not going to have time to do that if a hurricane is coming you know
10:1028 to 40 hours ahead so do it now save yourself a lot of aggravation and again
10:16remember this is supposed to be a very very busy hurricane season doesn't mean
10:21one's coming but it means one could be coming and so we always need to be
10:27prepared the state of Florida is the best state in the nation in handling
10:32hurricanes I know that firsthand you know our former governor is a pro at it
10:37unfortunately we're pros at this and Miami-Dade County is the best county in
10:41the state and handling at handling a hurricane so yeah we're probably the
10:45best county in the country at handling emergencies right and so due to the
10:53great the great people that we have you know our great first responders and the
10:58experience that we have here in Miami-Dade County so now in Spanish
11:04where I said it and go in others in a lot Rick Scott or a tenera esta esta
13:57I'm now going to announce and introduce our commissioner from Miami-Dade County
14:03Kevin Cabral before anything we'd like to recognize two other members that
14:10joined us Councilman Jackie Garcia rose from the city of Hialeah and Julia
14:14Lopez from the office of my colleague senator Rene Garcia as our as the
14:19senator said as the congressman said it's important that we're ready and part
14:22of being ready and having a plan and being able to say in those 72 hours is
14:26before the hurricanes come as well and a great program that exists as my safe
14:31Florida which is was created by chief by CFO chief Jimmy Petronas that has over
14:37a hundred million dollars so you can harden your home and you could sign up
14:40by going to my safe FL home.com again my safe FL home.com where you can receive
14:46up to $10,000 to harden your home whether it be impact windows and impact
14:50door shutters whatever it may be it's important that you prepare prior
14:54hurricane season that you prepare even as we're approaching it right if you're
14:57able to harden your home that could make the difference whether you lose your
15:00roof or whether you experience flooding or anything along those lines so it's
15:03important again that you have a plan that you're ready and in this case use
15:07all of the resources that are at our disposal and in this particular case you
15:10over $10,000 you could possibly get to hardening your home.
16:00hurricane season that could make the difference whether you lose your roof or
16:04whether you experience flooding or anything along those lines so it's important
16:08that you prepare prior hurricane season that you prepare prior hurricane season
16:12that you prepare prior hurricane season that you prepare prior hurricane season
16:16that you prepare prior hurricane season that you prepare prior hurricane season
16:20that you prepare prior hurricane season that you prepare prior hurricane season
16:24hurricane season that you prepare prior hurricane season that you prepare prior
16:42that that's actually lieutenant Eddie Rodriguez thank you so much thank
16:48you to our all of our elected officials that are here today I don't want to
16:52reiterate everything that they've already said so for us some of the most
16:56important things definitely in my opinion is to not only be informed prior
17:01to the storm but stay informed during the storm and lastly please don't don't
17:07leave your houses neither during the storm or after the storm until you have
17:10the all clear there's too much danger out on the road after a storm you have
17:14power lines that are down there could be flooding there's all kinds of
17:18possibilities out there that could hurt you so we recommend for everyone to
17:21please stay indoor like we all know this isn't our first rodeo like they say
17:25we're South Floridians right so for many of us we've been through this plenty of
17:30times we know what to do for those that are new at this and don't know what to
17:33do we have plenty of resources we have resources with our local governments we
17:39have our own city page there are plenty of organizations with resources online
17:43to offer assistance and information anything you may need or any questions
17:47you may have so please we know that this will be a very active season I
17:53believe the last time I read there might be between 17 to 25 named storms is what
17:59they're expecting so it's gonna be very active so we need to prepare just like
18:04they said before I came up here you need to prepare be ready for it have your
18:08three-day plan emergency kits your waters the things that you know that
18:12you'll need to survive three days if you're unable to leave your home and if
18:17your if cell phone is your only means of communication then you need to
18:20prepare and find all alternative means to communicate and make sure that your
18:25cell phones remain charged so you do have ways of contacting family friends
18:29or even 9-1-1 for help if you need help so with that being said like I said we
18:35are prepared City of Hialeah is prepared I think our local government's prepared
18:38the state's prepared just like the just like our senator said Miami-Dade County
18:44we're professionals when it comes to this I think nobody does it better than
18:48we do so we are definitely prepared and we wish everyone a good hurricane season
18:54we're gonna always pray for the best expect the worst and be prepared with
19:00that being said I'm gonna go ahead and introduce over our fire chief of our EOC
19:05Paul Garcia good morning my community thank you so much for being here a lot
19:15of this information it's it's repetitive and it's repetitive for a reason we are
