00:15 Naytay Capuso, please welcome the one and the only Pilar Pilapil.
00:21 >> [APPLAUSE]
00:27 >> Thank you.
00:28 Thank you for being here.
00:29 >> Black and white.
00:30 >> I know.
00:31 >> Same mood.
00:32 >> Synchronicity.
00:34 >> Exactly.
00:34 >> Thank you so much, Pilar.
00:36 Thank you.
00:37 I looked forward to this conversation.
00:39 Really.
00:39 >> Well, the feeling is mutual.
00:41 >> How are you?
00:42 >> I'm fine.
00:43 >> For a while, you were based in Cebu.
00:45 >> Yes, I'm based in Cebu at this time.
00:49 But since I'm going to start on a project, and since I am here to guest in your show,
00:56 then I am in Manila.
00:58 >> Right.
00:59 Let's start our conversation.
01:01 In 1967, during the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, I think it was in Miami, Florida.
01:06 >> Yes.
01:07 >> Bob Barker asked you, "Are you really 18?"
01:11 Do you remember what your answer was?
01:13 >> Yeah, I remember that.
01:14 And I said, "What do you think?"
01:16 >> [LAUGH]
01:17 How was that moment?
01:18 I mean, take us back to that moment.
01:20 >> I thought during rehearsals, you know, before the coronation night, we have many nights of rehearsals.
01:26 And there was one night that he stared at me, and he said, "Miss Philippines, are you really 18?"
01:34 >> [LAUGH]
01:35 >> And I said, "What do you think?"
01:37 >> Okay.
01:38 >> And he smiled.
01:39 And then I went.
01:41 >> How was your experience in Miss Universe?
01:44 >> Oh, okay.
01:45 >> What do you remember?
01:46 >> Well, you know, when you're very young, you're not really able to appreciate as much as you appreciate when you're more mature, right?
01:53 I mean, it's a completely different stage in your life.
01:57 I was surrounded with beautiful women, et cetera, et cetera, and of course, some gentlemen that were eyeing us around.
02:07 >> The girls, yes.
02:08 >> Of course.
02:09 And it was quite an experience.
02:11 But as a young girl, of course, it was quite overwhelming.
02:15 >> You were 16, right?
02:16 >> Yes.
02:17 >> Did you want to win?
02:19 >> No, no, no.
02:20 I wasn't thinking of that.
02:21 >> What were you thinking?
02:22 >> I wasn't really a full-grown woman.
02:23 I was a kid.
02:24 >> Oh.
02:25 >> I was a young girl.
02:27 >> But, Pilar, as a young girl, did you have a sense that you were beautiful?
02:31 >> Not really.
02:32 I don't remember thinking that because I don't even remember -- well, there were people who were telling me that, but it never really crossed -- I mean, it never really got into my head.
02:45 >> Right.
02:46 >> I mean, just a passing thing for me.
02:48 >> When you talk about age, because there were many decades, many experiences, you know, I had Gloria Diaz here on the show, and I asked her what she thought about beauty.
03:00 And she said, "Gloria, 99% of beauty is youth."
03:06 Do you agree?
03:07 >> I don't.
03:08 I'm sorry.
03:09 But beauty to me is something that needs to age like wine, you know?
03:18 You know, I remember those pictures that I had when I was very young, and I didn't look as -- you know, this is my opinion.
03:25 I looked better when I was already older, not when I was very young, definitely.
03:30 Because in the first place, you go through many, many stages in your life as a young person.
03:36 You know, you go through, you know, like, for instance, a heartbrokenness.
03:40 >> Tama.
03:41 >> You go through so many problems and struggles in life.
03:44 It takes time to be happy.
03:47 So when you're happy, that's when you become beautiful.
03:50 >> Yeah.
