Charles Leclerc led from start to finish to break the curse and win his home race at the Monaco Grand Prix, ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and teammate Carlos Sainz!
Transcript
00:00 78 laps around Monaco, it slides down, away we go, Leclerc gets away brilliantly
00:05 Here comes Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz behind him
00:09 And Sainz trying to squeeze past Oscar Piastri into the first corner
00:12 They're getting a bit congested at the back but they've all made it through
00:15 And Piastri's hung on to second place, Leclerc leads them through, Massenet, Norris
00:20 All over the back and there's a problem for Sainz
00:22 He got very very close to Oscar Piastri, has he got a puncture?
00:25 I think he's got a puncture and or suspension damage
00:30 It's red flag, Sainz did hit his front left against the side of Oscar Piastri
00:36 This means they can unfortunately
00:39 Oh that's why we got a red flag
00:41 And Sergio Perez involves and the Haas I think of Kevin Magnussen
00:46 And Nico Hülkenberg I think is the other car, yeah
00:50 So they've obviously tripped over an incident and look at that
00:53 Both front wheels gone and that, well three of the four wheels, that's a huge
01:00 So he's obviously gone around or something Sergio Perez
01:02 And just been whacked by cars coming past
01:05 Look at how well the survival cell is working
01:08 And the tethers on the wheels of that red bull, that's extraordinary
01:13 That's kind of written off every single piece of that Formula 1 car
01:17 What this does mean Crofty is that they can change tyre compound now under the red flag
01:23 And run to the end of the race
01:25 Look at the start once again, Leclerc got away brilliantly
01:29 And I think Sainz reacted a little bit faster than Oscar Piastri
01:32 Now let's see the pinch point into Saint-Laurent
01:35 Sainz is almost ahead at that stage
01:37 And that's where the contact was just coming out of Saint-Laurent
01:40 Yeah so it's front left puncture for Sainz
01:42 We saw the car skidding along the ground, he's struggling
01:44 And that's why the front two got away from him
01:47 And as he tries to turn right into, I said part of Casino Square
01:51 The car's not interested
01:54 Now for sure Leclerc has gone through
01:57 As before we saw the red flag Leclerc's gone through the first sector timing point
02:01 Which is down the hill before Mirabeau is it not?
02:03 Yeah but have they all gone through it?
02:06 Well no, no way they all went through it
02:08 So therefore I would imagine it'd be like Australia if you remember last year
02:12 With the final restart there
02:13 Oh and he did, he got a tag from Kevin Magnussen
02:16 Yeah Magnussen was to his right
02:18 And three into one effectively is what we're looking at there
02:23 So I think that rather confirms Perez had some kind of start issue as well
02:28 Because he's back with the two guys who started on the back row of the grid
02:32 And there's Sainz unable to turn the car
02:36 This is Carlos Sainz now at the start of this race
02:39 And we can see he's alongside Oscar Piazzi going into Saint-Laurent
02:44 And so it's no wonder that there was the briefest of touches there
02:48 And that could have been an awful lot worse for both cars
02:52 But we know how serrated those pieces, those little turning vanes they put
02:56 They're like, you know, if they ran over you'd be like chips to be honest
03:00 Right now we're going to see Sergio Perez
03:02 This is going to be about 400 meters of his Monaco Grand Prix
03:06 Oh he's nearly ticking over into the first corner
03:10 And now he's got Kevin Magnussen to his right
03:12 And Magnussen just keeps on pushing up there
03:14 So one wheel escaped on its tail
03:20 There's hopefully to stay in bound of the track
03:23 There's not a grandstand there thankfully
03:25 And let's see the view now from Nico Hülkenberg
03:28 Who's, you can see it all unfolding in front of him
03:32 And there's Kevin Magnussen trying to squeeze alongside Perez
03:35 Two into one, don't go
03:37 And then Hülkenberg just at the moment he thought he got through
03:40 He gets tagged too
03:41 Damn it, that was unnecessary
03:43 Yeah
03:45 And I wonder what those stewards will say about this
03:48 Perez was almost stationed on the outside
03:50 He covers the middle of the track
03:51 It was front wheel against front axle aligned with rear axle
03:58 Whosever fault it was
04:01 A single-seaters only have one person in them by definition
04:06 And I believe Kevin should have got out of that
04:09 You know that was a like 80-90% chance of a crash basically
04:14 And you just rather like he did up against Logan Sargent
04:18 In Miami again you could say well I was alongside him
04:22 As we see the two Alp...
04:23 Oh there's another incident out there then
04:26 As two Alpines get into each other
04:29 And once again...
04:29 Was it two Alpines?
04:32 Yeah well you've got...
04:32 Oh my god Gasly's been wrong-footed hasn't he?
04:35 So...
04:35 You've got Albon just ahead of Gasly here
04:39 Ocon on the inside
04:41 What did he do?
04:42 What did he do?
04:44 Exactly
04:46 What did he try to attack?
04:47 He threw him like he was a teammate in Porter
04:49 The drone car's damage loss
04:51 Presented by Andreas Stella as to which way they would go with that
04:57 We got five lights though
04:58 It's lights out and away we go
05:00 We're racing again and this time Oscar Piastri gets a better start
05:03 Than he did first time around
05:05 And Carlos Sainz is behind him
05:06 And alongside Lando Norris
05:08 Going into Turn 1
05:09 It's Charles Leclerc who leads them up Beaurevage
05:11 And on towards Massonet
05:12 They've all got around the first corner
05:14 Unscathed
05:15 As through Massonet we go now
05:17 Leclerc got a better getaway than Oscar Piastri
05:19 But crucially for Piastri
05:21 His getaway was better than Carlos Sainz on this occasion
05:23 Yeah Piastri could slop fully in front this time around
05:27 And it was Lando Norris and George Russell
05:29 That were virtually side by side up the hill
05:32 Russell backed out of that
05:33 Because he had to
05:34 Otherwise he'll end up in the same place that K-Mag and Perez did earlier on this afternoon
05:41 George no need to stick this close to Norris
05:43 Just manage these tyres at this stage
05:45 This is the only opportunity
05:47 Alex Albon has kind of got his feet up in that position
05:54 But he's not relaxing in any way shape or form
05:56 That's the only reason why Russell's going so slowly
05:58 He's just giving them a three-pits up gap eventually
06:00 So yeah keep it there for the moment
06:03 Right it's Bizzotto to manage his tyres
06:07 And that will be quite frustrating I'm sure for Max Verstappen
06:10 Oscar Piastri has just put his foot down a bit more here
06:14 And is closing in on Charles Leclerc
06:16 As you can see that gap that was at roundabout one second
06:18 Is now down to half a second
06:20 And he's broken the DRS threat from Carlos Sainz behind him
06:24 Lando Norris running fourth
06:25 Then George Russell big gap between Norris and Russell
06:28 And then Verstappen, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Albon and Gasly in the top ten
06:31 Charles managing I guess
06:33 Because that was close with Piastri
06:35 One lap he might set it
06:38 Meanwhile Max Verstappen is kind of fiddling around on his own
06:43 Having the sort of comfortable middling afternoon
06:47 That he has not made a habit of in the last three seasons
06:51 He's in sixth at the moment
06:52 He won from sixth last time out
06:54 I think it's going to take something for him to do that this afternoon
06:57 This is the one minute 18s for the lap times
06:59 They're now back in the one 19s
07:01 And a little love tap on the barrier from Lando Norris
07:05 I don't think he quite made the barrier did he?
07:08 But that's... yes I think he did
07:11 Left rear didn't he? You're right
07:12 Did he?
07:15 It says officially one centimetre super close to the wall
07:18 If you can we need to slow down a bit
07:20 Yeah, coming
07:22 What's the scope of that?
07:25 We are preventing McLaren to have a pit stop window
07:30 Because we have no Russian
07:31 This happening?
07:32 I didn't get it
07:34 But that makes me push it to slow speed which I don't like
07:37 He's getting it from both sides on that one
07:40 And you do not want to go any closer to that barrier
07:44 That Carlos Sainz has just put his Ferrari
07:46 Verstappen currently is half a second quicker on the last lap
07:49 And as to Martin, Alain Stroll saying that he has got a puncture
07:55 He's only just come in for a set of tyres
07:57 He's been overtaken by his teammate Fernando Alonso
08:00 And that is the wheel and the tyre hanging on
08:04 Just and then rolls away as he gets into the pit lane
08:08 And in terms of the race Martin
08:10 Another 100 metres before the pit lane to go
08:14 Lance Stroll's tyre would have gone off into the middle of the track
08:16 Yeah, and would have caused a safety car
08:19 It looks like it was contained inside the pit lane doesn't it?
08:23 Here's Lance Stroll out of the tunnel towards the Nouvelle Chicane
08:28 We can't see the left rear
08:30 Oh, did he turn in there a bit?
08:31 Yeah, he turned in too early and clipped the left rear
08:33 Yeah, we couldn't see it but I think we all felt it
08:38 And that's when the tyre fell off
08:40 They're readying themselves for a pit stop
08:42 Down at Mercedes and at Red Bull as well
08:45 Is this Hamilton coming in?
08:46 It is
08:47 So Verstappen you would imagine might follow him in too
08:50 Or is he, you know, Verstappen's carried on on his way
08:54 That's a do whatever he doesn't do moment I would think for Verstappen isn't it?
08:58 And look, the gap to Yuki Tsunoda is significant for Lewis Hamilton
09:02 So he doesn't lose position by making a stop
09:06 And he can try and get himself an extra point for fastest lap of the race
09:09 Oh, Verstappen's in the pits
09:10 There he is
09:11 He certainly is and it's going to be the, I was hoping, hoping it might be the soft tyre
09:15 It's not, it's the hard tyre that Max started the race with like Lewis Hamilton
09:20 But if you're George Russell now, well this is going to be a bit nervous isn't it?
09:24 You got Max Verstappen, where does he come out?
09:27 He comes out on the track ahead of Lewis Hamilton
09:31 On board with Valtteri Bottas currently
09:34 Is there a gap? Is there a gap Valtteri?
09:37 Is there a gap to go for and make a move on Logan Sargent?
09:41 Is that an overtake Martin?
09:43 That is a bona fide in-race
09:46 Norris behind, slow him down so that Russell doesn't pull away too much
09:50 What have you got here in the tunnel?
09:52 This is Lance Stroll, the overtake on Joe Guarniu in the tunnel
09:56 He got so much more traction coming out of Portier
09:59 And this is what I'm thinking if somebody, he's on the soft tyre as well
10:03 So yeah with Verstappen rapidly catching now with George Russell
10:07 Let's see if he can overtake him
10:09 I kind of get the feeling like with the traction advantage you might be able to
10:12 Max Stroll now trying to put pressure on Logan Sargent
10:16 And getting past Logan Sargent
10:18 73rd lap out of 78
10:21 And Charles Leclerc out in front has a cushion of eight and a half seconds here
10:26 I think for the first time in this race he might start to breathe a little more easily now
10:32 Because he's got that big gap to Piastri who does seem to be struggling
10:36 It's about a second a lap Leclerc is going faster than Piastri
10:40 Just a few more corners to go as they rise at the grandstands
10:43 As they have been doing all weekend
10:44 But this time they rise to acclaim Charles Leclerc as a winner
10:49 Here in Monaco for the first time
10:52 The son of a hairdresser is a cut above the rest
10:57 Here in Monaco his hometown, his home run
11:01 Charles Leclerc wins the Monaco Grand Prix
11:04 And that is a fantastic result for team, for family
11:11 And I think for Formula 1 as well
11:13 Monaco winning the Monaco Grand Prix, wonderful
11:17 This will be as popular in the paddock as Lando Norris winning Monaco
11:22 Finally!
11:22 Yes! Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes!
11:29 Yes!
