Rishi Sunak announced yesterday that the general election will take place on 4 July 2024. We asked Glaswegians what they think.
Transcript
00:00 It doesn't matter what time they call an election, there's always an agenda for them.
00:04 They've got no other option.
00:06 Yeah, they're not sure things are going to get better, they might get worse.
00:08 Nothing ever changes. It doesn't matter who gets in.
00:11 I don't think there's much difference between them.
00:15 Hanging on too long, people get frustrated.
00:17 Probably thought now's as good a time as any with some good results coming in,
00:21 with the economy and stuff like that.
00:22 Politically, the landscape's so rough for all of them and I think it's like,
00:28 they've got enough money now that they can feasibly just leave.
00:31 They've put all of their rubbish in the cupboard and now they can just go,
00:35 well that's not us to deal with anymore, we don't have to deal with that.
00:38 To deal with the things that are causing all the pressure with the cost of living,
00:42 people can't afford to buy food and it's shocking that there's so many
00:47 needs for food banks and this 2024 is appalling.
00:51 So whoever gets in drastically needs to change that.
00:55 Now they can sit back and they can go, well you're not doing a good job,
00:58 you're not doing this, you're not doing that,
01:00 even though they're the reason that they can't do a good job.
01:03 Because it's like the foundation's rotten for them already to begin with.
01:06 Suddenly there's things changed and the people that should have got that dealt with,
01:10 were the people with the blood scandal.
01:12 All of a sudden it's all changed.
01:14 You know, and now the post office scandal and everything.
01:17 So I think that's kind of one of the main reasons why they've decided now
01:21 is the best option for them.
01:23 And I think it's maybe also the pressure from their own members and their own party
01:29 who are saying it's just going to get worse and worse for us.
01:32 If we abandon it now we can just say, oh we tried.
01:37 And then suddenly a general election's called, so why?
01:40 Currently people are struggling to get jobs.
01:43 The jobs they do get are awful.
01:45 But I suspect people just feel it's time for a change.
01:49 I don't think anybody's particularly inspired by the Labour party,
01:53 but it's different.
01:55 Young people especially who are going to be voting,
01:57 are going to be trying to vote for someone who's got their views in mind.
02:00 Everybody's probably concerned about just walking the streets safely
02:04 in schools and stuff like that.
