00:00 "Where's the professor when you need him?"
00:02 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most shocking surprises and jaw-dropping twists from the first season of X-Men 97.
00:16 Naturally, major spoilers ahead.
00:18 "Oh my god, Nathan."
00:20 "Let's skip the reunion, Dad."
00:23 Number 10, Forge's Past Mistake.
00:27 Following the tragedy of Storm losing her powers, Forge, the mutant inventor, makes it his goal to restore her goddess-like abilities.
00:35 "If you're needing a meat toaster or a thing that'll store your mutant powers..."
00:39 "Or a bowl of this delicious chili."
00:41 "Yep, or chili. Then I'm your man."
00:44 Along the way, the two start to form a romantic relationship, which becomes strained when he reveals a dark secret of his past.
00:51 You see, the government hired him to design anti-mutant weapons, like the inhibitor collars.
00:56 "You, of all people, should know the perils of trusting those in Washington."
01:01 "That's not fair."
01:03 While he may not have actually built them, his designs gave aggressors like the Friends of Humanity the tools to terrorize mutants.
01:11 In a way, he inadvertently caused Storm's crisis.
01:14 Determined to atone for his role in all this, helping Storm regain her powers was definitely a great start.
01:21 "I'll say it once, just once. Then you can go or you can stay, but... I love you."
01:29 Number 9. Mr. Sinister is the Puppet Master.
01:32 The monstrous Sentinels' attack on Genosha was undeniably one of the biggest tragedies of all time,
01:38 one that resulted in countless mutant deaths.
01:41 "Regardless of your stance on recent world events..."
01:43 "Oh, my."
01:44 "The images you are about to see may be disturbing."
01:48 We're still mourning Gambit's demise. Who could have created such a destructive monster?
01:53 Was it Bolivar Trask, the man who made the original Sentinels?
01:57 Nope. It turns out the real mastermind behind the massacre was classic X-Men baddie Mr. Sinister.
02:02 After using Trask's DNA to create the abomination, the dire destruction was inevitable.
02:08 However, according to Sinister, this was just a prelude to a greater atrocity to come.
02:13 He also makes it clear that he is not bluffing.
02:16 "Don't fret the future. Why, Genosha was merely the beginning of a prologue, now past."
02:23 "You have nothing to fear, so long as you place your faith in Sinister."
02:30 [Laughter]
02:31 Number 8. Mary Jane's Return.
02:34 While the X-Men struggle to save Earth, several citizens bear witness to the frightening news reports.
02:39 "World leaders have been hoping for the best, but we regret to inform you that the missiles..."
02:44 "...striking to intercept the asteroid have failed."
02:47 Among the viewers are Spider-Man, the animated series' Peter Parker, and Mary Jane?
02:52 "And scientists believe that when it makes impact, it will strike the East Coast of North America."
02:58 Fans will recall that the '90s Spidey series ended on a cliffhanger with Peter searching for missing Mary Jane.
03:04 "We are going to find the real Mary Jane Watson."
03:07 "What?"
03:08 We never got to see how Peter's journey ended.
03:11 However, this quick cameo in X-Men 97 confirmed what we were all hoping for.
03:16 Peter succeeded in his mission and reunited with the love of his life.
03:20 While it would have been nice to see the actual reunion,
03:23 it's heartwarming to know that Spidey and MJ are together again.
03:27 Number 7. Charles Xavier's Will.
03:30 After enjoying some post-battle basketball, the X-Men are greeted by a nasty surprise.
03:34 Magneto in Professor X's office.
03:37 "Magneto, what are you doing in our home?"
03:40 "Your home? I beg to differ, Cyclops."
03:44 If that wasn't shocking enough, it's revealed in Xavier's last will and testament
03:48 that he left everything to Magneto, including the X-Men.
03:52 "His fortune, his school, everything he built, everything he fought for, now belongs to me."
04:01 Considering he's been their greatest enemy and is openly opposed to Professor X's vision of peace
04:06 between humans and mutants, having Magneto take over the team was quite surreal.
04:11 While Magneto actually tried to fulfill his friend's wishes,
04:14 learning to coexist with humans proved difficult,
04:17 especially when they kept giving him a reason to go back to his old ways.
04:21 "And that my kind, like yours, have the right to live in it.
04:26 I am trying to be better.
04:30 Please."
04:35 "Do not make me let you down."
04:41 Bastion is undeniably one of the X-Men's most terrifying foes,
04:48 but where did he come from?
04:50 While investigating his childhood home, Gene has a vision of Bastion's past,
04:54 a frightened mutant child with a connection to machines.
04:57 Throughout the vision, one notable face pops up, Nimrod.
05:01 Nimrod was a futuristic sentinel sent back in time to kill Professor X in the original series.
05:07 While Nimrod was eventually destroyed, remnants of him infected Bastion's father,
05:12 which resulted in the boy's mutant abilities.
05:14 "Nimrod.
05:16 Creating something new.
05:19 Parts of past, present, and future."
05:23 So even though it failed in its original mission,
05:26 Nimrod still plagued our heroes by inadvertently planting the seeds to create a true monster.
05:32 "He's descended of every sentinel from Master Mold to Nimrod.
05:35 Mutated, evolved, born."
05:38 Number 5.
05:39 Cable's Identity
05:40 "Oh God, Nathan."
05:42 "You monster!"
05:47 To save his newborn son Nathan,
05:49 Cyclops was forced to send the child into the future to be cured of Mr. Sinister's virus.
05:54 Having to abandon his newborn baby was nothing short of heartbreaking.
05:58 However, halfway through the season, Cyclops makes an unexpected discovery.
06:02 Not only was Nathan cured of his sickness, but he eventually grew up to be Cable,
06:07 the time-traveling mutant vigilante seen in the original series.
06:10 "Oh my God, Nathan."
06:13 "Let's skip the reunion, Dad."
06:15 Fans of the Marvel comics already knew Cable's parentage,
06:18 but the 90s series only vaguely hinted at their connection.
06:22 It was definitely a welcome treat to once and for all reveal Cable and Scott's relationship.
06:27 "What mistake?"
06:28 "Not saying goodbye."
06:30 "That sort of ending, huh? I'm afraid so."
06:37 Number 4.
06:38 The Fate of Professor X
06:40 The last time we saw Professor X,
06:42 he was barely clinging to life following an assassination attempt.
06:45 "I am proud. Proud of you all. My X-Men."
06:54 After that, he was taken into space by the Shi'ar Empire to heal him.
06:58 But after that, no one knew what became of him.
07:01 While the rest of the world believed him to be dead,
07:03 the X-Men held out hope that the Shi'ar could save him.
07:06 "Can he ever come back?"
07:08 "Perhaps not in body, my children, but my spirit shall remain among you,
07:18 where it was always meant to be."
07:24 Halfway through the revival's first season,
07:26 we are happy to say that the mystery was finally solved.
07:29 "Professor Charles Xavier."
07:33 Turns out Professor X is alive and well,
07:39 not to mention engaged to the Shi'ar Empress Majestrix Lalandra.
07:43 In the wake of the tragedy in Genosha,
07:45 Xavier doesn't hesitate to return to Earth and reunite with his students.
07:50 "To me, my X-Men."
07:52 It was supposed to be the happiest day of Jean's life
07:58 when she gave birth to her and Scott's son Nathan.
08:00 Instead, her entire world was turned upside down
08:03 when another Jean shows up at the X-Men's doorstep.
08:05 "What did I say? She's back."
08:09 "Jean?"
08:12 In a cruel twist of fate, this turns out to be the real Jean Grey.
08:18 "But the Jean that lies on this couch would appear to be the actual Jean Grey."
08:22 Having been abducted by Mr. Sinister, Jean was replaced with a clone.
08:26 Realizing she's been living a lie, the clone Jean becomes emotionally vulnerable,
08:31 enabling her transformation into the Goblin Queen.
08:34 Thankfully, Jean brings her back to her senses,
08:37 and her clone leaves to make a life of her own.
08:39 "He's a living reminder of the purest love two people can share,
08:43 and no one can ever, ever take that away from you."
08:48 "This is the greatest moment of my life."
08:50 But not before adopting a new name for herself, Madeline Pryor.
09:00 "Call me Madeline Pryor. Farewell, Madeline. Farewell, Jean."
09:06 Number 2. Rogue and Magneto's Relationship
09:09 Once Magneto joins up with the X-Men,
09:11 we notice him growing particularly close to Rogue.
09:14 "I feared you would do your best to avoid being alone with me, Rogue."
09:19 Gambit especially takes notice of this,
09:21 becoming increasingly jealous of their connection.
09:24 It is soon revealed that before becoming an X-Man,
09:26 Rogue was trained by Magneto.
09:29 "That was a long time ago, Eric. And that cat's gotta stay in its bag, you hear me?"
09:35 Eventually, this bond blossomed into a romance.
09:38 We also learn Rogue is able to touch Magneto without harming him.
09:42 However, Rogue becomes caught between two loves.
09:45 There's a physical affection with Magneto, but her love for Gambit runs deeper.
09:49 Sadly, Rogue's decision is too little too late,
09:52 as a tragic event takes the swamp rat of her dreams away from her.
09:56 Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions.
10:05 The Second Coming of Apocalypse
10:07 Apocalypse returns in the finale and has big plans for next season.
10:11 "So much pain, my children.
10:14 So much death."
10:21 Magneto Lives
10:23 Magneto survives Genosha and is abducted by Bastion.
10:27 "Well, I saw the thing coming out of the sky, but one long..."
10:33 "Nifty bop, right?"
10:34 Unexpected Meet-Ups
10:36 Displaced in time, the X-Men meet young Cable and young Apocalypse.
10:40 "Do not fear us.
10:41 What is your name?"
10:44 "My name is En Sabah Nur."

11:04 Number 1. Forge and Bishop's Mission
11:09 The X-Men managed to save the world from Asteroid M, but mysteriously vanished.
11:13 "Six months after E-Day, and rumors still swirl about the fate of the X-Men."
11:19 Presumed dead, Forge is left to find and recruit other scattered mutants on his own.
11:24 Fortunately for Forge, Bishop arrives and delivers some hopeful news.
11:28 The X-Men are not dead, but are instead scattered through time.
11:32 "Some thing or someone yanked our friends through time,
11:36 and now we gotta go rescue the X-Men."
11:39 With this revelation, the mission for the duo becomes clear.
11:45 Rally a team and locate their friends. This signals either a new lineup of X-Men,
11:50 or even the formation of X-Force. Only time will tell which mutant heroes
11:54 join their team, and more importantly, if they will be successful.
11:58 "Oh dear."
12:04 Which X-Revelation threw you for a loop? Let us know in the comments.
