00:00 What a game one it was last night of the Eastern Conference
00:07 Finals inside TD Gordon in Boston. The Celtics hosting the
00:11 Indiana Pacers in yesterday as we previewed the game DRS our
00:16 coach JY James Young did say maybe Indiana carries over the
00:20 momentum from a game seven victory on the road inside
00:23 Madison Square Garden to the other garden in Beantown and
00:27 could be live to steal one, but the odds makers did not agree
00:30 ten point number in favor of Boston total of 222. The Celtics
00:36 in every one of their home games make it number seven in
00:40 this postseason run last night have been booked as at least a
00:44 double digit favorite 13 points or greater prior to game number
00:48 one last night and from the very start, it seemed like the
00:52 Celtics would make good on that large spread. They jump out to
00:55 a twelve zip lead over Indiana, but the Pacers battle back.
00:59 They keep it close. Then Boston starts to pull away again in
01:03 the third quarter. They had as many as a fifteen point lead
01:06 late in the third before the Pacers rally once more having a
01:11 lead 117 114 under 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Then a
01:17 costly inbounds pass from Andrew Nembhard goes off Pascal
01:21 Siakam. So the Celtics have an opportunity and Jaylen Brown
01:25 takes advantage drilling a corner three. We got the
01:28 elusive double bang out of Mike Breen. It forces overtime at
01:33 117 all and in OT Boston prevails in game number one of
01:38 the Eastern Conference finals with a 133 128 victory. Yes,
01:42 Indiana does cover as your double digit dog and a total of
01:46 222 skies way over, but it was over in regulation as well. I
01:52 gotta tell you like we'll get to some of the player
01:54 performances here, which I think we were pretty much
01:56 spot on on most of those, but the way this game ended you
01:59 take a look at just a rebound by Indiana. You get the foul
02:02 call and that's a shame. They weren't in the bonus just yet
02:04 under 2 minutes because I would went to the free throw line for
02:06 two free throws. You make one the game is over, but you still
02:08 had a side out inbounds. How many times do we talk about
02:11 this? Ben anybody growing up has played any you know
02:14 recreational basketball who had a coach in those instances.
02:17 You never want to throw the basketball backcourt now
02:20 granted. I understand they were in the backcourt, but hear me
02:22 out on this where you're going towards your own baskets,
02:24 which you saw Siakam do knocks it out of bounds, which keeps
02:28 it there. If you would have thrown the basketball across
02:30 half court and it got deflected away, the clock is running. You
02:33 can still set up your defense and then you would have enough
02:36 time to say okay by the time they cross half court 6 seconds
02:39 left. They pull up round three. Then is the time you foul and
02:42 you still were able to win that basketball game. It was a
02:44 disastrous play call here drawn up, which allowed that to
02:47 happen and gave the Celtics the chance to shoot a three point
02:50 shot from the quarter. Yeah, how simple like we're not even
02:54 talking about like hey, we had a tough execution play get the
02:56 ball inbounds and you win the basketball game. They couldn't
02:59 do that and I just I couldn't understand the play call and
03:03 where it ended up was let me just throw it to see on the run
03:06 and he knocks it out of bounds himself. That was a disaster
03:10 and Jalen Brown was the one who caused the pass breakup only to
03:14 pay it off with that made corner three to force overtime
03:18 at 117 apiece and right before Andrew Demhard tried to inbound
03:23 the basketball you heard from the game broadcast Pacers do
03:27 have a time out if things get a little bit dicey. They did not
03:31 elect to take that time out and DRS. It's the age old debate
03:34 that you'll see on many sports talk shows throughout this day
03:38 when a basketball team is up three do they decide to foul on
03:43 the defensive end of the floor for the theatrics of it all.
03:47 I'm against it. Let a team put up a buzzer beater or a game
03:51 tying shot to see if we get overtime to see if we get a
03:55 victory, but last night Rick Carlisle elects to not foul
03:59 Pascal Seahawks got close backed off and Jalen Brown converts
04:04 with that made corner three. What did you make of Rick
04:08 Carlisle's decision for Indiana to not foul up three in the
04:12 final 10 seconds? I'm with you on that, but you know we always
04:16 usually look at this in college basketball terms. I fell every
04:19 single time, but particularly when you're at that point Ben
04:22 where it's like under 5 seconds because typically you don't see
04:25 the way that play was called out. It's usually the other
04:28 team been inbounding the ball in their own baseline dribbling
04:31 all the way up court running more time down and the minute
04:34 they cross over half court you foul them. You don't even let
04:36 them get into position, but where the Celtics were
04:39 inbounding the basketball, they were already in position. So
04:41 it's sort of tricky and also when we equate it to college
04:44 basketball to the pros, what don't we have in college
04:47 basketball? The continuation foul. It's a little bit more
04:50 dicey to foul in a three point shot because you know they're
04:53 going to foul. So just make a shooting motion and they will
04:56 count that as an attempt at a three point shot and you shoot
04:59 three threes from the free throw line. It was a ridiculously
05:01 tough three point shot, but it is kind of interesting where I
05:04 usually would foul, but I would have liked to see in the clock
05:07 6 seconds, 5 seconds, 4 seconds a little bit less than the game
05:10 for all intents and purposes would be over. It was a great
05:13 shot that Jalen Brown hit, but I just I don't even look at
05:15 that, but it's like boy, you should have just fouled up
05:17 three. Call the time out inbound the ball or even worst
05:20 case scenario. Nobody's open. Throw the basketball into the
05:23 front court so they have to actually go get it and then
05:26 dribble the length of the court and pull up a ridiculous
05:28 running three point shot. Even if you don't foul there, just a
05:31 disastrous inbound play which cost the Pacers the game. In
05:35 college troops completely agree. You also are not entirely
05:38 sure who that free throw shooter is going to be if he's
05:42 even going to make two of them to keep the game close as you
05:45 hope to extend and in the NBA you inbound from the front
05:49 court as the arrest just said not having to go the full
05:52 length like you do in college basketball. So the Boston
05:55 Celtics who have had home for advantage throughout this
05:58 playoff run and would into the NBA finals as well. It's been a
06:03 key metric Donnie. We have looked at they are now 42 and
06:06 six straight up inside TD Garden all season long 2521 and
06:12 two against the spread five and two straight up in playoff
06:16 action. Now just three and four against the number though.
06:19 However, inside TD Garden pace was up last night in
06:23 regulation as Indiana kept things close as a double digit
06:27 underdog over in nine of fourteen games now for the
06:31 Pacers in this playoff run, but Indiana just two and six
06:34 straight up away from Indianapolis. Yeah, they and
06:38 again, we just get back to the point opening the show. You
06:41 can't even say like hey, it was a hard fought loss that we
06:43 have. We're going to be right in this series. It's a lot
06:46 different of a perspective to look at that when you had the
06:48 lead and should have won the basketball game. It wasn't a
06:50 late three point shot by the Pacers to draw within five
06:53 points on the final. It was the fact that you should have won
06:55 that game. You should have all that momentum moving forward
06:58 and now you have to sit back and say what more can we do
07:00 here? I don't know execute your plays and don't turn the
07:03 basketball over, but the one thing that was true last night
07:05 we got a lot of points. I'm expecting points in the series,
07:08 which is great for prop betting. so I'm enjoying it.
07:11 Well, look at some of the player performances and now the
07:14 updated series outlook after Boston holds on for a game one
07:18 win in the Eastern Conference Final. That's next in a game
07:22 that goes to overtime to start the Eastern Conference Finals.
07:26 You are going to see a lot of overs certainly when the total
07:30 sky's over 222 Boston wins and escapes maybe with a game one
07:35 victory in overtime 133 128 over Indiana and Donnie when
07:41 you look at the prop board last night a ton to like if you were
07:45 betting overs Jason Tatum game high 36 points. He scored ten
07:49 in overtime as well. Jaylen Brown 26 drew holiday a season
07:54 high 28 points that included playing 48 minutes in four
07:59 converted threes on the other side for Indiana. It's been the
08:03 story for the Pacers all playoffs long really all season
08:07 long. They score for the best offense in all of the NBA and
08:11 they have seven players averaging double digits in
08:14 terms of their point output throughout the postseason. That
08:17 was the case last night. Obi Toppin and TJ McConnell get into
08:21 double figures off the bench. All five starters for Indiana
08:25 into double figures as well, led by Tyrese Halliburton, who had
08:29 25 Pascal Siakam over his points prop of 20 and a hook
08:32 with 24 Miles Turner. The big man stepping out for three made
08:36 threes. He had 23 last night as well. Yeah, I was really
08:40 impressed with Indiana's offense. You shoot 54% as a
08:43 team been fresh off of a game seven exhausting series against
08:47 the New York Knicks and you step up against the rest and
08:49 Celtics with a good enough chance to win and sometimes we
08:52 take a look at you say alright unders might be a sharper play
08:55 typically than overs because we always want to bet an over and
08:57 cheer it on as long as it makes some sense and even yesterday
08:59 take a look at the final score. Hey man, you got it easily
09:02 across the board 133 to 128. Now granted you have the total
09:05 in your back pocket at the end of regulation, but I went on the
09:08 air multiple times yesterday and said my favorite wager is
09:10 115 and a half on the over for the Boston Celtics as a team
09:13 total. They had 114 before that three point shot. You might
09:16 say like well. Yeah, if they would have fouled at the end of
09:18 the game, they would let know they wouldn't have made two
09:20 free throws. They would have made the first which again 115
09:22 then they would have missed the second free throw and who
09:24 knows what would happen there. So that was sort of a good and
09:26 also I told you Jason Tatum. I really thought he was going to
09:29 shoot 20 plus times, which he did and needed overtime, but
09:32 also his points prop there 29 and a half. Where do you have
09:35 been 26 at the end of regulation that three ball
09:37 doesn't go down. He doesn't get his prop. so that great back
09:40 forward that you have for overtime on over his worked out
09:43 really well yesterday. If you're betting anything in the
09:45 way of points overtime can relieve a lot of the sweats
09:49 late in regulation, both Aaron Neesmith and Andrew Nembhard
09:54 the role players perhaps in that starting five go over
09:57 their points props of nine and a half for Neesmith ten and a
10:00 half for Nembhard as well. So Donnie entering this series, we
10:04 all expected Boston to lay it done somewhere as we had seen
10:07 in the opening two rounds for the Celtics that generally came
10:11 in game number two at home last night almost changes my
10:15 thinking on how this series eventually plays out as we look
10:20 at the series outright price. Boston was a minus 1200
10:25 favorite entering game number one after escaping with a game
10:28 one victory. It's now minus 2000 Indiana gave the Celtics an
10:33 absolute test last night. So how does the outcome of this
10:37 opening game with the Pacers forcing overtime on the road
10:41 change your outlook for the Eastern Conference finals
10:43 overall? It was it's a hard gauge on the Celtics. We know
10:46 how good they were been during the regular season, but we keep
10:49 telling ourselves like well, he can't score Cleveland can't
10:51 score. So of course, the Boston Celtics are going to win. The
10:54 one thing that Pacers don't do is play defense, but they can
10:57 score. Now. Here's the issue. What do we see in the previous
10:59 two series game number one went to the Celtics game number two,
11:02 the Celtics lost and go. Okay. You got our attention now wipe
11:05 the team off the court. The Celtics got a win and I think
11:08 they can say at the same time. It looks like the Pacers just
11:10 got our attention like we gotta be real serious in this series.
11:13 So I'm interesting to see what happens in game number two. I
11:16 don't expect the same type of outcome here. I do expect the
11:19 Boston Celtics to win game number two just like we
11:21 expected them to win game number threes in the first two
11:24 rounds like okay guys. Yeah, this team is really good. We
11:27 gotta put our best effort into absolutely win, which hurts even
11:30 more for the Pacers. You should have won that game. It's very
11:33 rare that you recover from could or should have would have
11:36 type games like they had. We'll see what they got in game
11:38 number two, but I do think it's a fun betting series because
11:41 we're going to get game to game those points numbers there in
11:43 that 220 range, which is great for profiting and also where I
11:46 can see those slow down performances great performance
11:49 by the Pacers. He just didn't come away with anything. No
11:52 moral victory man. None no moral victory and I also kind
11:56 of go to the other edge of that coin thinking it could be
12:00 debilitating to be that close and to truly cough it up in the
12:04 final 10 seconds of regulation. Initially, if you would have
12:07 asked me how this series played out, I would have said Boston
12:10 and six. I think Indiana can win too even though they were
12:14 competitive last night in forced overtime. I now think
12:17 it's in five. I think the Celtics in five might be the
12:21 best bet. I do think Indy gets one in Indianapolis. I'm just
12:25 not so sure that last night me makes me feel that this will be
12:29 a tightly contested series. I think Boston got their gun out
12:33 of the way very early. In fact, in game number one.
12:39 (upbeat music)
