5 Israeli Soldiers Killed by Their Own Tank in North Gaza

Five Israeli soldiers died as a result of being hit by gunfire from an Israeli tank in northern Gaza. Initial investigations found that two tanks fired at a building in the Jabalia refugee camp, where troops were gathered.

As quoted from the BBC on Thursday, May 16, 2024, this week, after previously withdrawing, Israeli troops returned to the area. Israeli troops said that Hamas had regrouped there.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Palestinians have fled fighting and bombing. Both the Israeli military and Hamas' military wing said on Wednesday that fighting in the Jabalia camp and the surrounding town of Jabalia was intensifying.

Fighting is also taking place around the southern city of Rafah, where nearly 600,000 people have been displaced since the start of the Israeli operation 10 days ago. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said five soldiers serving in the 202nd Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade were killed in the Jabalia camp on Wednesday evening due to Israeli tank fire.

Two tanks in the area fired two rounds at a building used by the deputy battalion commander, according to a statement.

"From initial investigations, it appears that the tank fighters, from the ultra-Orthodox Hetz paratrooper company, identified a gun barrel coming out of one of the windows of the building and directed each other to fire towards the building," the statement said.

Apart from the five killed, seven other soldiers were injured by tank fire, three of them seriously. On Thursday morning, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that there had been intense Israeli airstrikes in the area of al-Hoja Street in the Jabalia refugee camp, causing “complete destruction.”.

Meanwhile, five people were injured in a drone attack in the al-Faluja area. Hamas' military wing claimed on Thursday that it had fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli troop carriers in the Block 2 area of the Jabalia camp and targeted an armored bulldozer with an explosive device east of Jabalia town.

Wafa also cited medical sources as saying that more than 30 civilians, including 10 children, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on residential buildings near Gaza City. Palestine Post photojournalist Mahmoud Jahjouh and several members of his family were reportedly among the dead.

Meanwhile, the IDF scaled back operations in Jabalia, Gaza City, and other northern areas in January after declaring that it had “dismantled” Hamas battalions there. However, this left a power vacuum, so the group was able to rebuild its power.
