Why Everybody's Wrong About Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland has the "all-round game" of a League 2 player... so people say. But after a poor performance against Arsenal in Man City's crunch title match at the weekend, are these criticisms of his game valid?

00:11 In the aftermath of Manchester City vs Arsenal, it was suggested by Roy Keane
00:16 and then copied, repeated, echoed, syndicated and expanded upon
00:20 by every single person with a radio, phone and show and a YouTube channel
00:24 that Erling Haaland has the general play of a League 2 player.
00:28 An outstanding finisher, no question, but he's only scoring so many goals
00:32 because he plays in a Manchester City side designed to feed him
00:36 and his ability to actually get involved with the rest of the game
00:39 is that of a player nowhere near the level he's currently playing at.
00:43 And I mean, it's certainly an interesting premise, but is that true?
00:47 Well, if you just come here really quickly, just a little bit closer, come on, scooch in, scooch in, come on.
00:52 No.
00:56 Alright, so just for one second, putting aside that the majority of these opinions
01:00 have come from bad faith actors trying to generate page views, web page impressions
01:04 or advertiser revenue, is Erling Haaland a bad player?
01:08 Now, you may think we don't need to talk about his finishing here
01:11 because that's the one thing everybody does agree on, he's an amazing goalscorer,
01:15 but actually, no, we do.
01:17 Because nobody was talking about Erling Haaland's general play last season.
01:21 Like, every single time I watched him, he scored like, top of my head, 80 goals or something.
01:26 He was breaking a record every single week.
01:28 It's only now that the goals are proving harder to come by
01:31 that people feel the need to have this conversation.
01:34 Like, well, what else is he contributing?
01:36 And it is actually a fair point because this stat shocked me when I looked it up, right?
01:39 Since the start of December, which I don't even remember the start of December,
01:43 that's how long ago it was, Haaland has scored four goals in the league for Man City.
01:48 Like, yes, he was out for a little while with injury, but there are loads of fixtures in that run
01:52 where he doesn't get a goal.
01:54 And just for context, in that same period last season, he got 12 or 13 goals,
01:59 despite there being a literal six-week break for the World Cup.
02:02 So something's clearly going wrong, then.
02:04 Like, Man City are doing absolutely fine, they're still challenging for the league,
02:07 they're still in Europe, but Haaland, their main goal thing is not working the way he was last year.
02:14 And if we compare his shooting stats from last season to this season,
02:17 you can see that that is still the model of one of the best strikers in the world,
02:21 but there is quite a big drop-off between what he was doing then and what he's doing now.
02:25 Like, it's largely just little things, like his shot and target percentage has dropped ever so slightly,
02:30 he takes fractionally more chances to get a goal now than he was.
02:33 But the really staggering bit in this, and apologies for this, is how he's performing versus his xG.
02:39 And I always apologise for using this stat because I know a lot of people really do not care about xG,
02:44 but clearly there is something wrong with Haaland, and if you look at the data,
02:46 this is the bit that jumps out.
02:48 Like, last season he was over-performing the quality of chances he gets,
02:51 like, based on all the models they've got about the quality of chances,
02:54 if you buy in to any of that stuff, he was doing fractionally better than he was supposed to be doing,
02:59 so he was over-scoring based on the chances he was getting.
03:02 And whether you're into it or not, that does tend to be the mark of a very good finisher,
03:06 someone who is doing slightly better than you would expect the normal player to do in these situations,
03:11 and it does tend to be borne out on the eye test.
03:14 Like, think in your head who the most ruthless striker is, they will almost certainly have a similar stat.
03:19 And also, please put in the comments, by the way, who your brain went to when I said "think of a ruthless striker",
03:25 because mine went to Les Ferdinand for some reason.
03:27 Anyway, sorry, back on target, you compare that to this season's numbers,
03:31 and he is now under-performing that same stat.
03:34 Again, not by a whole lot, but even that little drop-off puts him in, like, the bottom 15% for finishing in the league.
03:41 Still scoring loads of goals, of course, because he is a really good finisher,
03:44 and he does get loads of chances in this team, but based on the quality that's being made for him,
03:48 he's not quite doing as well as he was last year.
03:50 So what does that actually tell us, though?
03:52 Well, first off, that he's human and is capable of having a good season and a less-than-good season,
03:57 but also, if he's currently under-performing what we expect of him,
04:00 and we know he's capable of over-performing what we expect of him,
04:03 that should balance out over time.
04:06 Like, he should get back to the average, and when he does, he'll be scoring more goals,
04:10 and questions like this simply won't be getting asked.
04:13 But to discuss the actual question that's in question,
04:18 is his overall play that of someone way below this level?
04:22 So just to go back to that Arsenal game where this all started,
04:25 this is every single successful pass Erling Haaland made in that game.
04:29 It's certainly not a lot, and what there is certainly isn't good.
04:32 None of this, either directly or indirectly, led to a chance being created,
04:36 either for him or a teammate.
04:38 It was probably his most anonymous big-game performance he's had for Man City.
04:42 The thing is, while it was a bad performance, it certainly wasn't an unusual performance.
04:46 Erling Haaland was not getting involved in Man City's build-up play.
04:50 He was not dropping away from the defenders to receive the ball.
04:53 He was not trying to bring other people into play, because he does not do that in this team.
04:58 And I've seen some people asking, "Well, why the hell not?
05:01 Like, clearly that would have really helped Man City in their build-up.
05:04 It would have helped them make more chances.
05:06 Why was he not dropping away from the centre-backs, finding some space,
05:10 getting on the ball, and helping to make things happen?"
05:12 And the answer, really simply, is that Manchester City do not want him to do that.
05:17 They are such a disciplined side.
05:20 They so rigidly stick to whatever the plan is, and if you watch that game back,
05:24 that is clearly not the plan.
05:26 This is just one example, but I could honestly show you like a million of these from this game.
05:30 City get the ball. They are trying to play through Arsenal.
05:33 Erling Haaland is an option two feet, and they choose not to use him.
05:38 And it's a small gap, I'll certainly grant you, but Kovacic is the kind of player who can play it.
05:43 Haaland is available here to receive this pass, but he doesn't want to do that.
05:47 He goes sideways.
05:48 Just a couple of seconds later, Rodri gets on the ball, and he could fire this in to Haaland's feet
05:53 and really panic Gabriel and Saliba, but he chooses not to do that.
05:57 Here's another one, Nathan Ake. He's looking left, he's looking right.
05:59 He sees Haaland's here. There is a gap to play that through.
06:02 He doesn't want to do it. He goes sideways.
06:04 In fact, he goes sideways to Diaz, who also has a great angle to fire this ball into Erling Haaland's feet,
06:10 but doesn't want to do it.
06:11 He instead gives it to Rodri, and would you believe it, another perfect opportunity to play this ball into Haaland's feet,
06:18 but that is not how Man City want to use him.
06:21 And it's not that they haven't got faith in his ability to do that.
06:24 Like the goalkeeper goes long into him at one point in that first half,
06:27 because he can't find a nice short pass, and Haaland does really well against both defenders.
06:32 And thusly, if we look at Haaland's passing stats this season, they're largely the same as they were last season,
06:37 he's probably the least effective forward in the Premier League for getting involved in the play.
06:43 And look at all those little red bars. That is ass.
06:46 Like that's the kind of numbers I would be posting.
06:49 In fact, do you know what? I'll go so far as to say it,
06:52 those are the kind of numbers a League 2 striker would be posting in the Premier League.
06:57 But oh wait, what's this suddenly materialising on screen?
07:00 It's another graph.
07:02 And wow, okay, now we're talking, right? Those numbers are much better, aren't they?
07:06 I mean, they're clearly still coming from a centre forward who's an out-and-out goal scorer,
07:10 but I mean, just look at the difference in this stuff.
07:13 Look at how many passes into the penalty area they're doing.
07:15 They must be really good at dropping off the centre backs, finding the space, and playing a teammate in.
07:21 Oh, but wait a minute, Adam. Whose numbers are these?
07:25 Who is this perfect, beautiful angel of a centre forward
07:30 whom Haaland should be taking several leafs off the pages out of the book of?
07:36 Who is it?
07:37 It's just Erling Haaland, mate.
07:39 It's Haaland when he was at Dortmund, when he was playing in a system that required more general play,
07:46 more link-up, more involvement in all that stuff.
07:49 It's literally him.
07:51 Because you see, when Haaland was at Dortmund, he wasn't in a team that had 70 or 80% possession every single game.
07:57 There was transitions and counter-attacks and far more opportunity and necessity
08:02 for him to pull away from the defenders to create pockets of space,
08:05 players bursting beyond him into the space that never exists in Manchester City games,
08:11 and as a result, that's the kind of centre forward he was.
08:14 He still scored all the exact same "I'm Erling Haaland" goals that he gets at Manchester City,
08:18 but also, he was doing things like this.
08:21 He was dropping off the centre backs, he was receiving the ball to feet,
08:24 he was bringing others into play, he was getting assists like this one,
08:28 which you would just never, ever, ever see him get at Man City.
08:32 Now I can already hear the comments, "Yes, das Bundesliga is of lower quality than the Premier League,
08:37 so numbers always look slightly better when you're playing in that division,"
08:40 but it's the style of play.
08:42 If you watch him in both of these teams, he is completely different.
08:46 At Manchester City, Pep Guardiola wants him to stay as central and as fixed as possible
08:52 because that is how he creates space for his teammates,
08:56 not by finding pockets himself or dropping off into them,
08:59 by tying up two centre backs who never want to leave him on his own.
09:04 And you did see this in the Arsenal game.
09:06 All of Manchester City's best moments and good work came down the flanks
09:10 because Arsenal were defending so narrow because of Haaland.
09:15 Man City never want to give Haaland the ball in this central area
09:19 because he's being doubled up on by two central defenders,
09:22 but that is not a problem.
09:24 That's literally the plan.
09:26 They want that to happen because the space it invites,
09:29 if you can stretch them with the wide players,
09:31 leaves all the room for these two to then get into dangerous places.
09:35 And then, most importantly, when they are able to create a chance,
09:39 it almost guarantees that Haaland is always in the right place to take it.
09:44 He's never dropped out to the flanks or gone into the midfield to create space.
09:48 He's always in the position of maximum opportunity for when the chance comes.
09:56 So his passing stats are absolutely dreadful
09:58 because he's specifically told don't worry about any of that.
10:02 And his goal scoring stats are incredible because that's his job.
10:06 It just drives me absolutely mad to watch Erling Haaland
10:11 and say that he's actually really rubbish.
10:14 This specific thing he's being told not to do
10:17 and is doing a good job at not doing,
10:19 it's just like, it's so transparently disingenuous.
10:24 It's soundbiting, it sounds good,
10:26 and it's why they'll get you on the panel next week,
10:28 but just like, there's no substance to it whatsoever.
10:33 It's not a take you could honestly have from watching football or just...
10:38 And I've already said what the real problem is.
10:41 It's not that anybody actually thinks that, surely.
10:43 It's just that it creates debate and discussion
10:46 and I'm just playing a part in that as much as anybody I understand.
10:50 But honestly, the point I want to leave you with
10:52 is if you think Erling Haaland is in any way a League 2 player,
10:56 no disrespect to League 2,
10:58 then you, my friend, are a donut.
