00:00 First and foremost, I want to thank everybody for being here.
00:02 This is by far the biggest turnout I've seen and helping us track down Franklin's bumblebee.
00:07 Franklin's bumblebee was last seen just up the road where we're going to head in a couple of
00:15 minutes and the more boots on the ground, the more people we have looking for this particular
00:19 critter, the better the chance are. That's a bear! There's a big old black bear that lives down here.
00:25 Around a quarter of the bumblebees in North America are facing some degree of extinction
00:30 risk and the indication that we have there is that they're just not found in the areas where
00:34 they used to be. Many of the bumblebee species are struggling to keep their place in the world.
00:39 Even though it hasn't been observed recently, I'm optimistic that it's still out there.
00:47 We just haven't found it. If I see a bee with a black abdomen, I'm going to suspect it's Franklin's.
00:54 It's as black as they get really. We got to go, we got to show this one to Link too.
00:58 Hey Link! Oh cool, come here. Uh-oh, we got another good one here. Jess Tyler did it again.
01:04 I think they are swarming. You need to get this. This is, this is a rare event. When I started
01:17 keeping bees in the 1970s, it was standard for a queen to live four years. Well this never happens
01:23 anymore. Honeybees can bring in diseases with them which can be spread to wild bees. One of the main
01:30 effects and leading sort of hypotheses for the decline in Franklin's bumblebee is actually a
01:35 disease that we believe has been spread and amplified by the commercial bumblebee industry.
01:40 Mites and parasites and fungus. More recently, it's exposure to pesticides. It's a number of
01:46 stressors acting on these populations. It's sort of a death by a thousand cuts over time. We just
01:51 have to ask ourselves what kind of a world are we going to pass on to our children, our
01:55 grandchildren. Do we like that picture or do we would we like to maybe start changing it now?
01:59 I think that's kind of an elephant in the room. It's dangerous. It's really honestly quite dangerous.
