00:00A 71-year-old Hindu temple in Kulim Kedah could be demolished soon to make way for the
00:07expansion of the Kulim Hightech Park.
00:10The committee of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at Sungai Seluang Lunas said the Kedah government
00:16told them to vacate the area on grounds that they were squatting on state land.
00:21But Temple Committee Chairman K Kishore Kumar denied this, saying that the temple was founded
00:27by estate workers in 1953 and was part of an old estate previously managed by Saim Darby.
00:35He said that in 2022, the Temple Committee received an order from the authorities to
00:40clear out as the land in question no longer belonged to Saim Darby.
00:45The committee then raised their plight with the district office, the Kulim Hightech Park
00:49Corporation, local authorities and even met with an aide to Kedah Menteri Besar, Sanusi
00:55Noor.
00:56Despite this, he said the officials they met over the past two years were not committal
01:01and that notices to vacate the land were still issued.
01:04The committee is seeking a new plot of land to relocate the temple, which serves around
01:092,000 Hindu families who live in the area, as well as funds to build the new temple.
