00:00Katusha Somaz, this is Ekaterina Ilarionova Mikhailova Demina. She was a senior medical
00:08instructor in the Danube military for Latvia. Ekaterina, hero of the Soviet Union and one
00:15of the few women who served in Marine Corps intelligence. A documentary film was made
00:20about her in the USSR. Director Viktor Lisakovich called it Katusha. There Ekaterina recalled
00:28that when she joined the fleet, the sailors did not take her seriously. She was only 18
00:35years old then. The stern marines could not understand why they had sent her such a syringe.
00:43But during the Timuruk landing operation, they saw not a young, tamped girl, but a fearless
00:51nurse being shell-shocked. Ekaterina sent 17 wounded soldiers under enemy fire. She
00:59bandaged them and literally pulled them out of the battlefield on herself. Then, as she
01:06recalled, the sailors came to apologize to her on their knees and asked to become as
01:14her brothers.
