A cold front will likely be key to which parts of the U.S. could face severe weather over Memorial Day weekend.

00:00Let's talk about the end of the month and with that I want to bring in our
00:03long-range expert. You know who he is the crystal ball meteorologist Joe
00:06Lumberg and Joe getting closer and closer to the Memorial Day week and we
00:10want to give everybody an idea of what to expect for that long weekend Saturday
00:14Sunday and Monday. Yeah I mean and I know that it's like a week and a half
00:17almost two weeks away but it's only a week and a half two weeks away and
00:21people are already making those plans to what to do during the Memorial Day
00:24weekend. Here's the big picture of what we're looking at right now. We think
00:27there'll be a general bulge in the jet stream really more across the southern
00:31plains and that's going to keep Texas kind of high and dry but there'll be a
00:35front trying to come down from the north and as it presses southward there's
00:39going to be an area of showers and thunderstorms it'll be drifting south
00:42for it yeah I think there's a risk of severe weather with that and it's going
00:45to have an impact on the weather in the northeast. North of it we're gonna have
00:47very comfortable weather throughout the holiday weekend. It'll start cool in the
00:51northwest may try to warm up as the weekend progresses. All right let's talk
00:55about that front Joe because I think that's really the key for much of the
00:59eastern half of the United States for Memorial Day weekend. Yeah you can see
01:02where that front is where we project it to be next Friday really from Maine back
01:06to Minnesota. As it sags southward on Saturday there'll be showers and
01:10thunderstorms accompany it Friday and into Saturday so places like Chicago
01:13you're probably gonna see at least one day of adverse weather going into the
01:17holiday weekend. St. Louis it's probably Saturday Arkansas maybe later Saturday
01:21night into Sunday and as that front slows down these areas are in line for
01:26some shower and thunderstorm activity that may be what you just don't want to
01:29see considering how wet it's been and how stormy it's been but that's the area
01:32of concern with this slowly sagging front. All right let's talk about the
01:36other problem Joe those forest fires burning in Canada already we've been
01:41looking at that but really quickly or let me make sure I have that okay let's
01:44end then with the snapshot again we are worried about at least some smoke
01:49problems across the north central United States. Yeah I mean there's a lot
01:52of fires continue to burn across portions of central and western Canada
01:55some of that smoke may continue to drift southward into the northern plains in
01:59the upper Midwest. Again one of the things that we're concerned about for
02:02the holiday weekend itself a risk of severe weather really from Arkansas into
02:06the mid-atlantic states with that slowly sagging front. It should be very
02:10comfortable behind it from the northern plains to the Great Lakes dry and pretty
02:13warm to downright hot. Texas over to Florida seen some 90 degree heat you're
02:17probably going to see it again for the Memorial Day weekend dry for most of
02:20the west and if there's one little caveat there may be some showers that
02:23interrupt your barbecue plans for the holiday weekend in the northeast. Acuweather
02:27long-range expert Joe Lumber. Joe thanks for joining us.
