00:00 Final instructions.
00:01 Right, lads, you know what you expect from your ball,
00:04 if you're all blaming the instructions at all times,
00:06 when I tell you to break, you break clean,
00:08 defend yourselves at all times and the best of luck to you both.
00:10 Touch gloves.
00:29 Seconds out, run ball.
00:31 (BELL RINGS)
00:33 So, professional outing number four
00:35 for the richly talented Cody Smith.
00:38 We've watched him and enjoyed him three times this year so far.
00:41 Made his debut in March against Lucas Genovese at the York Hall,
00:45 won every single round over four,
00:47 and then every round over four against Francisco Rodriguez
00:51 in Newcastle in July.
00:53 On that Josh Kelly undercard,
00:54 and then the fighter we've just seen, Alissa Quesada,
00:58 Cody Smith dealt with comfortably.
01:00 He's in over six here against Darryl Tapfuma,
01:04 who's become a road warrior,
01:07 encouraged by his trainer Paul Webb to do so.
01:10 Moved to Luton from Zimbabwe at the age of eight,
01:13 and he does bring a useful skill set,
01:16 and he is one of those, Tapfuma Barry,
01:17 that feels he's been hard done to on the road a couple of times,
01:20 and he is not one who's lost every round.
01:22 No, he's not. He's got good movements.
01:24 He's going to cause fighters plenty of problems,
01:26 but someone like Cody Smith has done such a good job,
01:29 we've seen already so far in this round,
01:31 he's long, accurate, he's quite strong as well.
01:34 That's going to sort of negate that movement,
01:36 then you've got to try and get inside that left-hand jab,
01:39 and that's going to be difficult here for Tapfuma.
01:41 Talking to Cody Smith yesterday at the weigh-in,
01:46 he really feels like he's learning fast, of course,
01:49 but settling as a pro.
01:52 Top amateur national youth champion in 2021,
01:56 competed for both England and GB, 56 wins as an amateur,
02:00 seven international box cups,
02:03 nine times Yorkshire champion as well,
02:06 came with all those amateur baubles,
02:09 but it's a different game this,
02:10 and he really feels like he's started to settle,
02:12 and that, of course, is what those fights are for,
02:14 and then things will start to get more and more serious from now on.
02:18 Yeah, of course, you're having this, it's a unique sport,
02:21 where you've got boxing journeymen who don't really come to win,
02:23 but they will, if an opportunity,
02:25 massive opportunity presents itself,
02:28 but it's to practice what you do in the gym,
02:30 because it's real, it's a very difficult sport,
02:31 so you need these fights to learn what you do in the gym,
02:34 to put in the ring, and then once you tick those boxes,
02:36 which I always go on about,
02:38 then you step to the levels quite quickly,
02:40 then that rise to the top,
02:41 because once you get to a certain level,
02:43 you keep going very quickly and very fast,
02:44 and every fight's a harder fight than the one before.
02:48 But Cody Smith's been impressive, he's learned his trade,
02:50 he's thoughtful with his work, doesn't rush it,
02:53 make sure he's busy enough to win every round,
02:56 there's a few little things you have to work on,
02:57 but that's part of growing into the game.
02:59 Harold Tapfuma, one last time in Telford against Samuel Pekire,
03:06 by round four, stoppage.
03:09 Actually, all three of his wins have come via stoppage, Tapfuma.
03:13 He's in very, very deep here against an excellent fighter in Cody Smith,
03:20 but this is definitely a step up in level for Cody Smith,
03:23 and one he's dealing with effortlessly so far.
03:27 - Good job.

04:32 - Round two then.
04:40 Cody Smith making his fourth pro appearance
04:43 in those very, very flashy trunks.
04:46 In fact, they're both sporting those.
04:48 Smith with that sort of green fur
04:50 and Tapfuma with the black and the gold.
04:53 When Tapfuma started out and Paul Webb started to train him,

05:39 and that's what he needs to concentrate on.
05:41 But just, I love you Cody,
05:43 just double up with the jab now, Smith.
05:44 Double up the jab, get that right hand into play

05:49 And then just that movement on the target
05:53 a little bit more there, little pivot on the front foot.
05:55 Give himself a different angle of attack.
05:59 - Just to emphasize that point about Tapfuma
06:01 being competitive without necessarily winning,
06:05 he has three wins.
06:06 Only Kane Sheppard last November in Cardiff
06:08 won every round against him.

06:22 and I know they're looking potentially for a title,
06:26 maybe an English title at the end of next year.
06:28 There's no need to rush.
06:29 - Just showing the importance of a good jab
06:35 though here, Smith.
06:36 Just switched southpaw for a second,
06:37 but with that left hand jab from the orthodox,
06:40 that has just been keeping Tapfuma at bay.
06:42 - Has that height as well.
06:45 Lovely long jab.
06:47 But it is always fascinating when you start to see
06:55 a prospect tested.
06:56 That was a great left to the body, really dug that in
06:59 and Tapfuma felt that all right.
07:01 - Bit of an old school move as well,
07:04 'cause he went in with the head first of all.
07:05 That just stopped Tapfuma,
07:06 who expected the referee to say something,
07:07 but in that little gap there,
07:09 then he worked the way to the body really well there, Smith.
07:12 - Been learning plenty from that excellent pro,
07:17 Stevie Smith in his corner.
07:19 He had to take a left hook there though from Tapfuma.
07:22 And then back behind that jab.

08:38 the first mini crisis of Cody Smith's career.
08:42 That cut above the right eye, Jamie Sheldon,
08:47 cuts duty in that Cody Smith corner.
08:49 It doesn't look too bad, Barry.
08:51 - No, he's in good hands with Jamie, of course,
08:53 but this is where trust comes in,
08:54 'cause you've gotta trust,
08:55 unless they're telling you the cut's bad

08:59 you've gotta trust that they know
09:00 what they're doing in the corner
09:01 and you can get on with your own work.
09:04 - You can be absolutely sure

09:10 - Well, you might fancy an upset,
09:12 I think, you know, if they,
09:13 I don't know if the referee deemed that a head clash
09:15 or a punch.
09:17 - Yeah, he didn't signal to us,
09:21 we didn't see him signal to anybody
09:23 whether it was head clash or punch.
09:25 - 'Cause the replays, the two replays,
09:27 and they showed two different things, I felt.
09:28 One looked like it was a clash of heads,
09:29 the second one looked like a clear left hook.
09:33 - Well, the left hook landed after the clash of heads
09:35 and it's what caused it, isn't it?
09:37 Looked to me like it was maybe nicked by the head
09:40 and then the left hook opened it up.
09:42 That one becomes a point of debate.
09:44 There's the left hook there,
09:46 right on the button from Tapfuma.
09:49 - But that's happened because Smith's gone back
09:51 to pouring with that jab,
09:52 while they're looking for the right hand,
09:53 trying to draw Tapfuma in, but that's no good.
09:55 That left hand was working for him good.
09:57 Solid, long, and hard.
09:59 There, that's your, that's the shot he needs.
10:02 It's all the time.
10:04 And if Tapfuma gets in behind that,
10:05 then you can throw the right hook
10:06 because all the right suit lies out.
10:08 - And that left hook to the body from Smith,
10:10 that is a profitable punch for him.
10:13 And in terms of that cut, Tapfuma's landed clean on it
10:17 and then he's done so again.
10:18 I was gonna say he hasn't managed to open it up,
10:21 but blood is starting to flicker on his face again.
10:24 Right hook from Smith.
10:25 - There's not an urgency in the work here for Tapfuma
10:28 if he really genuinely wants to try and win this fight.
10:30 He's got to stand up in the pace a bit here.
10:32 He's walking forward with his hands over the single shots.
10:35 And Smith's got to go back and throw long straight shots.
10:42 Tapfuma's coming forward a little bit more now,
10:44 slightly more aggressive, not a lot, but slightly more.
10:47 That should give you more impetus
10:48 to let your shots go a little bit quicker.
10:50 - Exactly, the fact that Tapfuma thinks he has a chance now
10:53 might just give Smith the opportunity to hurt him here.
10:57 There's so much forward momentum.
11:00 - Oh, that's low from Tapfuma.
11:02 He's trying to make it rough in there.
11:07 Wow, Cody Smith's learning plenty tonight, Barry.
11:11 - Yeah, it's not as we find out at some point in your career,
11:15 it's not all plain sailing, of course,
11:16 and it's not always with fighters
11:18 who are better than you up in the level.
11:20 Sometimes it's just circumstances.
11:21 Again, a cut, a guy who knows his way around the ring
11:25 and can cause you a few problems.
11:26 But he's show composed, Smith.

11:41 Sliding back to create the space for that combination.
11:45 - Digging that left to the body
11:47 and then left hook and right hand from Tapfuma.
11:50 Turning into an interesting little scrap this one,

13:06 in there now.
13:07 They've got wise instructions from Stevie Smith
13:12 in his corner.
13:14 - Which is it, the pace of it here,
13:17 I know Tapfuma, I've seen his footwork.
13:19 - Paul Webber's told him, this is your chance
13:23 to cause a big upset.
13:24 Right hand there lands from Tapfuma.
13:26 - He felt that, Smith. - Look at the smile
13:27 on his face, and Smith was hurt there.
13:29 It's always looked like a tricky match,
13:33 and it's turning into one here for Cody Smith.
13:36 - Yeah, his hands a little bit too close,
13:37 too low close to the target there, Smith.
13:39 I was gonna say that, just at the end of the last round.
13:42 That right hand, that'll be right through his head.
13:44 But it's only really mainly,
13:46 except for that right hand there,
13:47 the left hook that's away there from Tapfuma.
13:49 So glue that right hand to your chin, or to your forehead.
13:52 Keep it nice and tight, like he is now.
13:54 (crowd chanting)
13:57 - That was low, that was low there from Smith.
14:01 - Yeah, Smith's frustrated,
14:03 and Tapfuma has borne the brunt of that.
14:07 Cody Smith fans in the crowd over on the far side
14:15 just telling him to stay calm here.
14:17 Just be a warning from John Latham.
14:20 Yeah, Paul Webb screaming at Tapfuma,
14:27 come on, he doesn't want it.
14:28 That was dangerously close as well.
14:30 To that belt line, it looked low to me from Smith.
14:33 - Too good left hook, so to the head there from Tapfuma,
14:35 it was a good little round here so far.
14:38 - Big swing and a miss there from Tapfuma.
14:45 See Smith, he's shoving in there.
14:49 Tapfuma not happy with that at all,
14:53 and nor is John Latham.
14:55 - The problem we've got there is Tapfuma is holding,
14:58 but when you retaliate like that,
14:59 you're always gonna be the one who gets told off first.
15:02 - Well, next one will be a point off.
15:06 Looks right on the belt line again from Smith.
15:10 Good foot movement from him there though, Barry.
15:11 - That's better.
15:13 - Oh, huge right hand from Tapfuma.
15:15 And Smith is down, and this crisis just
15:18 deepens and deepens now.
15:20 Smith's okay, but what a story we've got here in Bolton.
15:27 The road warrior, Darrell Tapfuma,
15:31 could be about to cause a big, big upset here.
15:35 Left hook again, then right uppercut from Tapfuma.

15:42 but should have took that count, see here now.
15:44 Little bit easy to push around.
15:46 Just got up a little bit too soon.

17:40 I think opening two rounds for Smith, no debate.
17:42 A 10-8 round for Tapfuma, no debate.
17:45 The third round could end up being really pivotal
17:47 'cause Smith was cut, if you remember,
17:49 at the end of the second
17:50 and there's a case to be made for Tapfuma.
17:53 - No, there certainly is, and either way,
17:55 it's all of a sudden a fight where
17:56 Smith looked relatively comfortable.
17:58 There's a crisis going on, Tapfuma's got the bit

18:06 the route to glory for him.

18:59 for Tapfuma, fantastic shot,
19:01 but it was Smith's fault he switched sides,
19:03 got caught square-footed and got hit flush.

19:13 Dreams of fighting for a title at Oakwell,

21:36 This has been a terrific battle,
21:39 and it might just be up for grabs.
21:41 - Well, what Smith did there at the start of the round,
21:44 he threw a one, two, three,
21:45 and he just spun around on the front foot.
21:48 That's what he has to do.
21:49 - Yeah, Smith could be in danger of losing a fight,
21:57 but if it's a boxing match, he could win it.
21:59 Oh, was that a stumble?
22:00 I think it was a stumble.
22:01 - Yeah, but he even went-
22:02 - Left hook though from Tapfuma, and then a right hook,
22:04 and it doesn't look good,
22:05 the optics in terms of scoring it.
22:08 - But what he does, Tapfuma, when he's in close,
22:10 whether he's, and I think a lot of it was scrapping
22:11 the last round for sure, but he's always working away.
22:14 And it just gives that massive whole impression
22:17 that he's the one bossing the contest.
22:19 - And if you give Tapfuma the third,
22:21 if it is level with that 10, eight round,
22:24 it's all on this sixth and final round.
22:27 - Gonna let that right hand go, Tapfuma now.
22:32 - That's his route to glory,
22:33 but a couple of heavy shots here from Tapfuma
22:36 might be enough.
22:37 - Some of these rounds, Barry, not the easiest to score.
22:40 - No, these are not, and you have to give,
22:42 like I had in the first, the last round,
22:44 the impression was first half of the round
22:46 was clearly Smith.
22:47 I think Tapfuma's having a good round so far.
22:49 - Letting those hooks go, Tapfuma.
22:52 Remember, this is all on John Latham.
22:57 It's a tough job, you know, sometimes.
23:00 If we had three judges, this has split decision
23:03 written all over it, but we can't have that.
23:06 - It's lovely from Tapfuma there,
23:07 but a little lean back.
23:08 - Remember Cody Smith, big prospect,
23:13 three and O coming into this.
23:15 Tapfuma only made his debut last year,
23:19 in June of last year, but already three, 13 and two.
23:22 We knew there might be a small danger from him,
23:25 but he might just be on the brink
23:27 of pulling off the upset here.
23:29 - Yeah, a good left hook there from Tapfuma as well.
23:31 Smith's gotta get those long shots back into play
23:33 if he can, picking some of the energy from somewhere.
23:36 - I can see team Wasserman over on the far side,
23:39 Nissa Sauerland there, matchmaker there with him as well,
23:42 and they look really nervous.
23:44 It's gonna come down unless Smith can pull something
23:48 out of the bag to John Latham's scorecard here.
23:50 - Oh, good shot there from Tapfuma again,
23:55 lovely right hand.
23:56 - You feel that Tapfuma at the moment
23:58 must be winning this sixth and final round.
24:01 Another big right hand, just missed that time.
24:04 - Smith trying to dig in, no,
24:05 Latham shots his own, but...
24:06 Oh, good shot.
24:08 - Oh, good shot from Smith, and he tries to follow it up.
24:11 He looks tired though, Smith.
24:13 - Yeah, he's digging in though,
24:14 he's showing a bit of resolve here, Smith,
24:15 but just not busy enough for me.
24:17 - It's one of those fights, how have you got it at home?
24:22 I think we've got Tapfuma nicking this by a round,
24:25 but you wouldn't argue with around the other way.
24:29 Oh, right hand from Tapfuma,
24:31 and then Smith responds, what a fight!
24:35 What a fight!
24:36 Fantastic action to light up this undercard.
24:40 Go on then, Barry, how did you score
24:42 that sixth and final round?
24:43 - Oh, that sixth round was definitely Tapfuma's round
24:45 for me, I thought, and then Smith down there digging deep,
24:48 he's had some good shots, and he's had,
24:49 just before he took that big right hand there, Smith,
24:52 he landed a good shot of his own, ironically,
24:54 but I think Tapfuma was just busier,
24:55 I think, you know, he's the one who can get close,
24:58 use that head, get inside, and always work away,
25:01 and look, Smith landed some good shots,
25:02 I think for me, Tapfuma's shots were heavier,
25:05 more concussive in that round,
25:06 and I think he was busier too, so,
25:09 yeah, I think he did enough.
25:10 - We're gonna find out very, very shortly,
25:14 this is gonna be mighty close,
25:16 there are some concerned faces,
25:18 let's get now to our MC, Paul Booth, with the verdict.
25:22 - Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,
25:26 so, after six rounds of boxing,
25:30 we ask our third man in the ring,
25:32 our scoring referee, John Latham, to decide the bounds.
25:37 He scores it at 57 points,
25:41 to 57 points,
25:43 and is unable to separate the boxes,
25:47 the bounce is a draw.
25:50 - A draw then, Tapfuma will feel hard done to,
25:54 so with the knockdown, he still didn't nick it,
25:56 I'd like to see them do that again,
25:59 but a draw, the end result, Barry, your final comments.
26:02 - Yeah, I think Smith, I've been a big fan of Smith's.
