00:00 India voted in favour of a draft resolution at the UNGA that calls for Palestine to be
00:06 granted full membership in the organisation.
00:10 At the emergency meeting of the 193 members of the UN General Assembly on Friday, the
00:15 United Arab Emirates, in its capacity as the main chair of the Arab group, introduced the
00:20 resolution on the admission of new members to the UN.
00:24 There were 143 votes in favour of the resolution, including one from India, nine against and
00:29 25 absentations.
00:31 After the vote, there was a chair in the UNGA hall.
00:42 The resolution concluded that the State of Palestine should therefore be admitted to
00:45 the membership in the United Nations since it satisfies the requirements of Article 4
00:50 of the UN Charter.
00:52 And so as a result, Palestine now has the following rights.
00:55 First, the ability to speak on behalf of the group, including representatives of significant
01:01 groups.
01:02 Second, the ability for members of the State of Palestine delegation to be elected as officers
01:07 in the General Assembly's main committee and plenary.
01:11 And third, the ability to fully and actively participate in the UN conferences as well
01:15 as the other international conferences too.
01:18 Israel however did not warmly embrace this move.
01:21 Israel's UN ambassador Gerard Erdan tore up a copy of the UN Charter during the General
01:26 Assembly in a show of extreme disapproval over the adoption of the resolution endorsing
01:32 Palestine's full membership.
01:49 Erdan called the resolution a clear violation of the UN Charter and claimed that it overrode
01:53 the US veto in the Security Council last month.
01:57 He continued by saying that he is holding up the mirror for the member states while
02:01 simultaneously dismantling the UN Charter.
02:04 "This day will be remembered forever.
02:06 Today, I want to hold up a mirror so you can see exactly what damage you are causing to
02:11 the UN Charter with its vote.
02:13 I want the entire world to remember this moment, this immoral act.
02:17 With your own hands, you are tearing up the UN Charter," he declared.
02:21 On social media, a video of Erdan shredding the copy of the UN Charter, the organization's
02:25 founding document, with a tiny shredder has gone viral.
02:30 Israel compares this move to the UN admitting modern-day Nazis into the assembly.
02:36 Israel obviously is furious over the development but what worries Israel more is probably that
02:41 its dependable allies are also endorsing the Palestinian bid to join the UN.
02:46 According to the Abraham Accord, the UAE, which proposed the resolution by allowing
02:50 Palestine to join, is an ally of Israel.
02:52 But if we discuss the Israel-India relations, it is well known that Netanyahu and Modi have
02:58 a great rapport.
03:00 Despite this, India voted for the Palestinian bid, which is indeed a shocker.
03:05 But one must note that for most of independent India's history, New Delhi had no diplomatic
03:10 relation with Israel.
03:12 Yet 40 years ago, India even issued a postage stamp depicting the Indian and Palestinian
03:16 flags flying side by side and the words "Solidarity with the Palestinian People."
03:22 India was also among the first non-Arab states to recognize the Palestinian Liberation Organization
03:26 in 1974 and considered it the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
03:32 The country was also the first one to acknowledge the existence of the State of Palestine in
03:36 1988 and 1996 when Delhi opened the representative office to the Palestinian Authority in Gaza,
03:43 which was later shifted to Ramallah in 2003.
03:46 But today, India and Israeli flags are displayed together at rallies demonstrating solidarity
03:51 with Israel after Hamas's October 7 attack.
03:56 The two countries have developed significant military ties.
03:59 Their leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu, share similar worldviews,
04:04 talking about the dominant role of their respective religions, Hinduism and Judaism, and what
04:10 they should play in their countries.
04:13 Indian and Israeli media, using Netanyahu's nickname, have dubbed their relationship as
04:18 Modi-Bibi bromance.
04:20 India's relationship with Israel also runs deep and goes beyond several decades.
04:25 The ties extend beyond defense and homeland security and even cover technology and agriculture.
04:30 The defense trade between the two nations is also very deep.
04:34 Yet, India decided to vote for Palestinian bid.
04:37 This move may bring turbulence in the India-Israel relations.
