A Tamil school in an estate, established 46 years ago with almost all pupils residing in the area, is now gaining popularity among pupils of mixed parentage.

SJK(T) Cantuman Chaah in Johor now has seven pupils among its total enrolment of 252 who are of diverse ethnicity, with a parent being either a Muslim or Chinese and even Orang Asli.

00:24His headmaster Dominic Savarimuthu said one Indian Muslim family has had two generations
00:30of their children who studied and graduated from the school.
00:54Dominic, who was posted to the school in November, was also a previous student who
01:13joined the school in year 5.
01:16He said the school, spanning 3.4 hectares, was the first united Tamil school comprising
01:22seven separate Tamil schools in the area.
01:25And in 1919, the area was divided into seven estates owned by a French company and in 1978,
01:33MIC leaders and non-governmental leaders decided to unite the school into one major school.
01:40The land for the school was provided by the company.
01:57Dominic said he was glad that students from mixed parentage were joining the school.
02:10Meanwhile, 40-year-old Indah Stani Gramjoko, said two of her sons, Surya Mohamad Soleh
02:21and Arafah Mohamad Soleh, are currently studying in the school, while her 19-year-old daughter
02:26Sherin Yulani also studied there.
02:40Sixty-seven-year-old grandmother Maria Muhyiddin said that at least 12 of her family members
02:45have studied in the school, including her brothers, sisters and grandchildren.
02:50The school, comprising three blocks and a hall, is a fully government school.
02:55They presently have 25 teachers and five support staff.
