Bowery Champs (1944) Full - Best of Old Movies
Copy boy Muggs, irritated that his superiors don't recognize his diamond-in-the-rough qualities, investigates the prominent murder of Tom Wilson. Ex-wife Gypsy Carmen falls under suspicion, whom Muggs and gang believe innocent and take into their protective care. Through their interference, though, newspaper boss Lester Cartwright gets mistakenly arrested for the murder, while soon-to-be-wed reporter Jim Lindsay seems always a step or two behind, as well as Bobby Jordan, visiting from the Army, tries to catch up to his gang pal.

00:01:00Coffee! Coffee!
00:01:03Where the devil is that kid at?
00:01:05Coffee!
00:01:10Coffee!
00:01:11Ah, quit your screaming. The vibration will break your glasses.
00:01:16Hey, by the way, when are you going to learn to become a real sports writer?
00:01:20The way you described that ninth inning rally yesterday, you'd think you were discussing a chess game.
00:01:24That was no gubernatorial election. It was a baseball game.
00:01:28Look, the end of the ninth inning, there's two men on base.
00:01:31A batter comes up and hits a home run. He upsets the whole apple cart. He wins the ball game.
00:01:36You talk about it like maybe you were asking for a second helping of apple sauce.
00:01:39No excitement, no feverishness, no nothing.
00:01:45Maybe you wouldn't like my job.
00:01:47Oh, you're being very precipitous.
00:01:49This is my racket. This is what I was born and raised for.
00:01:54You mind standing back? You're in the light.
00:01:57See what kind of trash you're writing here.
00:02:03No continuity. Nothing.
00:02:06I'll show you a story that'll really do it.
00:02:13Say, how do you spell catastrophe?
00:02:15Cat-a-what?
00:02:17Oh, you're so unintelligible. Catastrophe!
00:02:21A big thing, you know, everybody gets murdered, everybody's getting killed. Catastrophe!
00:02:24Never heard of the animals.
00:02:27Hey, Joe, you weren't as high as the fifth grade. Spell me catastrophe, will you?
00:02:30Well, if you're referring to the word catastrophe, meaning a calamity of great magnitude,
00:02:35from the Latin and Greek derivations...
00:02:37I ain't interested in the Latins and the Greeks. I'm talking about a baseball game.
00:02:42Oh, forget it. I'll use massacre. More euphonious, anyway.
00:02:46Copy!
00:02:47Copy!
00:02:48Well, what are you waiting for, Curley? You heard him.
00:02:50Copy.
00:02:55Watch your tempo.
00:03:01A fine thing. A fine thing.
00:03:05Look at that, you numbskulls.
00:03:07You sit with your feet on deck while the journal gets an extra on the street.
00:03:12Why, I came to work on that train, Mr. Cartwright. That didn't amount to anything.
00:03:16You mean to tell me that you were actually there when it happened?
00:03:20Yes, sir.
00:03:21And you didn't write it up?
00:03:22But nothing happened. Our train barely bumped the one ahead.
00:03:25The subway guard was a little cut by flying glass, and a couple of women fainted.
00:03:29And so you decided to keep it a secret?
00:03:31Oh, no, sir. I was going to write something about it.
00:03:33Yeah, that's the trouble with you. The trouble with all of you.
00:03:36You don't know a good story when it bumps into you.
00:03:38Didn't it occur to you to try and find out who those two fainting women were?
00:03:42No, sir. I, uh...
00:03:44Well, it occurred to the journal to find out.
00:03:46One of those women was Gypsy Common.
00:03:48Ever hear of her?
00:03:49What?
00:03:50Gypsy Common.
00:03:51Why, no, sir. I...
00:03:52Hey, isn't that the girl that used to be in the...
00:03:54When you were in Romper, she was the toast of Broadway.
00:03:56She drove around on the most expensive foreign car.
00:03:59Now she faints in the subway, and you tell me it doesn't amount to anything.
00:04:02Why, her riding around on a five-cent fare is a story in itself.
00:04:06Even if she didn't faint.
00:04:07She's the dame that was married to that big-shot Wilson, isn't she?
00:04:10Bright little boy.
00:04:11Now suppose you tell these two numbskulls why she has to do her fainting in the subway.
00:04:15Okay, you two numbskulls, although I will admit that the circumstances...
00:04:18Never mind. It's all in the journal. Read it.
00:04:21It says that Wilson had a smart lawyer when he got his divorce.
00:04:23They made a settlement out of court that left her practically broke.
00:04:26He kind of gypped the gypsy, didn't he, boy?
00:04:28Yeah.
00:04:32Where's Lindsay?
00:04:34Where's Lindsay?
00:04:35Why, I don't know. He was here a minute ago.
00:04:37Honey.
00:04:38Yes, dear?
00:04:39Look here.
00:04:40Auction. Oriental rugs. All sizes, all patterns.
00:04:4310 a.m., 512 8th Street.
00:04:45We might find just what we want for the living room.
00:04:47But 10 o'clock.
00:04:49Too bad they didn't make it after working hours.
00:04:51Oh, we can't let business interfere with drugs.
00:04:53I'll drop by on my way down to the police headquarters.
00:04:55It'll only take a minute.
00:04:56Well, perhaps...
00:04:57And now, Mr. Lindsay, if I may have the use of my desk for a few minutes.
00:05:00And my sacred beret.
00:05:02Oh, yes, sir.
00:05:03I just... I just dropped in to say good morning.
00:05:05Good morning.
00:05:06Good morning.
00:05:07Now, just a minute.
00:05:08If you and Jane don't get married pretty quick and stop all this lovey-dovey business,
00:05:12I'll have to fire the both of you.
00:05:14Yes, sir.
00:05:16And I'll do my best to take care of that.
00:05:24That guy.
00:05:25You're gonna have your hands full with him.
00:05:33Did you know you'd lost a button?
00:05:35Did I?
00:05:36Yes, sir.
00:05:37Well, I'll be darned.
00:05:39I just got this suit from the cleaner today.
00:05:41Something's got to be done about those tailors.
00:05:43I never thought such...
00:05:44Now, now, now.
00:05:45Go out and get a button to match and sew it on for you before you leave.
00:06:02Oh, hi, Jim.
00:06:03Hi, Mugs.
00:06:04Where you going? Police headquarters?
00:06:05Yeah, yeah.
00:06:06Just the usual round.
00:06:07Uh-huh.
00:06:08Well, watch out.
00:06:09They don't lock you up.
00:06:12Pretty good, huh?
00:06:13No.
00:06:14Well, at least punch it.
00:06:18Morning, profacious.
00:06:21What?
00:06:22Oh, pardon me, sir.
00:06:23I was just...
00:06:24I was just...
00:06:25I was just...
00:06:26I was just...
00:06:27I was just...
00:06:28I was just...
00:06:29I was just...
00:06:30I was just...
00:06:31What?
00:06:32Oh, pardon me, boys.
00:06:33I just dug these up in the morgue.
00:06:34There are a bunch of pictures that just become...
00:06:35Remember that thing they were shooting him out off about?
00:06:37I mean, uh...
00:06:38Forget it.
00:06:39The journal beat us to the story.
00:06:40Now, the best thing we can do is to ignore it.
00:06:42Yeah, but they didn't have no pictures.
00:06:43That's what he meant to boast.
00:06:44These are just what the doctor ordered.
00:06:45Get that junk off your desk and I'll show you.
00:06:47Get a load of this.
00:06:48This is once he was on the stage.
00:06:49Remember them million-dollar gams?
00:06:51Uh-huh.
00:06:52Just a picture of them when in big, fine, luxurious cars.
00:06:54Uh-huh.
00:06:55This is a picture of her right after the divorce.
00:06:57Uh-huh.
00:06:58You think I ought to get a raise for that?
00:06:59Uh-uh.
00:07:00Don't?
00:07:01Uh-uh.
00:07:02Well, anyway, look at the picture.
00:07:04I told you that sooner or later you'd come crawling to me on your knees.
00:07:27I'm not crawling, and I'm not asking for any favors.
00:07:31I only want what was mine when I married you.
00:07:33Why don't you get yourself a lawyer?
00:07:36You know I haven't a chance in court.
00:07:38Your lawyer thought of that.
00:07:40But I don't intend to be cheated, Tom.
00:07:43Not if I have to kill you.
00:07:49What do you want?
00:07:50You know what I want.
00:07:51I want my security.
00:07:53And I want them now.
00:08:20They're gone.
00:08:21They're not gone.
00:08:22I know all your tricks.
00:08:24Don't trick me.
00:08:25Look for yourself.
00:08:26You're not going to get away with this, Tom.
00:08:29I want what belongs to me.
00:08:30Now, you'd better find them.
00:08:32I'm telling you the truth.
00:08:33They're not here.
00:08:34You never told the truth in your life.
00:08:36And I'm not leaving yet till I get what I came for.
00:08:39You're getting out of here now, or I'll call the police.
00:08:43You'll never reach the phone.
00:08:46No.
00:09:08That's right.
00:09:09That's the guy.
00:09:10And murder.
00:09:11Where's Jim?
00:09:12I don't know.
00:09:13No, hasn't he been down there?
00:09:16Oh, well, I...
00:09:17You'd better get her down to Wilson's place right away.
00:09:19Looks like a big story.
00:09:21And tell him I'm fresh out of cigars.
00:09:23Thanks, Ron.
00:09:24I'll get Jim right on it.
00:09:26We're in blazes as Lindsey.
00:09:28Why, I...
00:09:29The biggest murder of the year.
00:09:30The victim financially prominent.
00:09:32All the earmarks of a mystery.
00:09:34Front page stop and not a word from my police reporter.
00:09:37Every time I come by this chair, it's empty.
00:09:40But nobody ever ran down a story sitting in a chair.
00:09:43No, and nobody ever did it playing hide-and-seek either.
00:09:46What do you mean, hide-and-seek?
00:09:47A police reporter's supposed to be around police headquarters
00:09:49this time of the day, isn't he?
00:09:51Yeah.
00:09:52Supposed to be.
00:09:53Well, that's where he is.
00:09:54He told me so when he left.
00:09:55Well, he's not there.
00:09:56I just phoned.
00:09:57Yeah?
00:09:58A good reporter doesn't sit around headquarters.
00:10:00Jim's probably out covering the case.
00:10:02Come to think of it, Jane is right.
00:10:03Now, if you ask me...
00:10:04Nobody did.
00:10:05All right, scoop.
00:10:06Find out something for the early edition.
00:10:08Just in case.
00:10:12You know where he is?
00:10:14Yes, he's at an auction buying rugs.
00:10:16Where?
00:10:17I'll go out and wise him up.
00:10:18I don't know.
00:10:19He took the ad with him.
00:10:20Fine thing.
00:10:21People are getting murdered, and he's out buying rugs to wrap them up in.
00:10:24Look, you go in there and keep old Zeppelin head busy.
00:10:27I'll go over to Wilson's place and pinch hit for Jim.
00:10:29I know, but suppose...
00:10:30Never mind the butcher.
00:10:31Go in there before the boss blows the fuse.
00:10:32Go on.
00:10:33But suppose...
00:10:34Go on.
00:10:35Quit staring at me.
00:10:36You're making yourself conscious.
00:10:46Hey, Glippy.
00:10:47What?
00:10:48You got your pickup outside?
00:10:49Sorry, but you didn't expect me to park him here, did you?
00:10:51It would save time.
00:10:52Come on, I want you to drive me down to police headquarters.
00:10:54I can't.
00:10:55I got a report.
00:10:56You can do that later.
00:10:57It's a matter in which speed is of detrimental consequence.
00:10:59What?
00:11:00I said speed is of detrimental consequence.
00:11:02You know something?
00:11:03You're getting the talk like a dictionary.
00:11:04If you're not careful, I'll make you a reporter.
00:11:06Come on.
00:11:11A button.
00:11:12A button.
00:11:13I'm an expert.
00:11:14That's fine, a button.
00:11:15Now all you need is a suit of clothes to sew on it.
00:11:17Oh, I love buttons.
00:11:18And my mother loves them, too.
00:11:19She's a button.
00:11:20She's got millions of them.
00:11:21How intriguing.
00:11:22Well, at least there's a change from saving strings.
00:11:24Strings?
00:11:25My uncle always used to save them.
00:11:26Yeah?
00:11:27What'd he do with them?
00:11:28He got a million together, and he wove himself a rope.
00:11:30What'd he do with the rope?
00:11:31Hung himself.
00:11:34Hand me your hat a minute, will you, Glimpy?
00:11:39Reminds me, I got a man.
00:11:40She saved hats.
00:11:45Quick, easy, will you, please.
00:11:46I'm a terrorist.
00:11:47Look.
00:11:4890s, 90s.
00:11:49Oh.
00:11:50Hey, you'd never get any tickets that way.
00:11:52Well, that's what we're seeing.
00:11:53Come on, get in the back.
00:11:54We got an errand to do.
00:11:56What are you waiting for, Glimpy?
00:11:57Make with the door.
00:11:58We leave on tour.
00:12:00Oh, the utility of you.
00:12:02Fast, please.
00:12:03Come on, make with the accelerator before I
00:12:05wrap that steering wheel around your nose.
00:12:14I got my foot in it.
00:12:16This is a fine thing.
00:12:18I figure it's a mighty mystery that Stephanie just broke,
00:12:20and Jim's not on the job.
00:12:22Oh, if that joint'll scoop us again, it'll be pathetic.
00:12:26How much cash you got?
00:12:27Presented.
00:12:28That means it's half full.
00:12:29That's all.
00:12:30Uh-huh.
00:12:31You know the way to the Wilson place?
00:12:32Sure.
00:12:33What is it?
00:12:34Never mind.
00:12:35Just drive.
00:12:36I'll show you.
00:12:37Didn't you say please take quarters?
00:12:38You can change your mind, can't I?
00:12:39That's a potential reporter's prerogative.
00:12:41But I'm reporting.
00:12:42I'm going to be back to try and spring.
00:12:43There you go again.
00:12:44Talking about irrelevance, irrelevance.
00:12:46Just when the fourth and second stance propels me to cover
00:12:48the most morbid of mutilations.
00:12:50Ain't you got no initiative?
00:12:52I got a middle initiative.
00:12:53I got a middle initiative.
00:12:54I got a middle initiative.
00:12:55I got a middle initiative.
00:12:56I got a middle initiative.
00:12:57I got a middle initiative.
00:12:58Francis, my mitten.
00:12:59Can you get this through your head?
00:13:00If we don't arrive soon at this emergency,
00:13:01Jim is going to lose his job,
00:13:03and there ain't going to be no wedding bells.
00:13:04Wedding bells, I like wedding bells.
00:13:05They make me cry.
00:13:06I'd advise you to melt your head and turn it into the fat dry.
00:13:10Get a nickel a pound, you know you could buy
00:13:11yourself a nice big lollipop.
00:13:13I like lollipops.
00:13:14You do, huh?
00:13:15Very easy to please, ain't you?
00:13:16Certainly.
00:13:17Maybe you'll like this.
00:13:18I'm getting to like it.
00:13:19Hey, is Muggs McGinnis around any place?
00:13:25Why, Bobby Jordan.
00:13:26Hello, Janie.
00:13:27The Army certainly has done things for you.
00:13:28Thanks.
00:13:29Say, is Muggs around?
00:13:30I've been trying to find him and the gang, and I haven't got much time.
00:13:31Well, he went up to Thomas Wilson's place.
00:13:32Wilson's place?
00:13:33Lexington Avenue.
00:13:34Oh, that's right.
00:13:35Thanks, Janie.
00:13:36I'll be seeing you.
00:13:37Take care of yourself.
00:13:38You could have left the curb, Danny.
00:13:39Maybe somebody else wants to use it.
00:13:51Turn off the electricity.
00:13:54Now what?
00:13:55Don't rush me.
00:13:56Quit pushing.
00:13:57I've got to get my brain accumulating.
00:13:58Now, there's two cheap things I want you guys to remember.
00:14:02Just two.
00:14:03Just two.
00:14:04What is that?
00:14:05Two cheap things?
00:14:06Oh, you're so capricious.
00:14:07In the first place, I'm running this show.
00:14:08In the second place, you ain't in the first place.
00:14:09Is that clear?
00:14:10Now, there's another little iota I'd like to express.
00:14:11I don't want you fellas jumping at no conclusions that ain't conclusive.
00:14:12Is that likewise clear?
00:14:13I don't get it.
00:14:14I've got it now.
00:14:15For your personal edification, I will impel you upon the details.
00:14:16There's two things you need to solve a murder mystery.
00:14:17A corpus selectus and a reducing mind.
00:14:18But the most important thing of all is that the guy that looks the guiltiest generally
00:14:19ain't.
00:14:20And the guy that looks the not guiltiest generally is.
00:14:21You understand?
00:14:22I didn't think you'd get it.
00:14:23I didn't think you'd get it.
00:14:24I didn't think you'd get it.
00:14:25I didn't think you'd get it.
00:14:26I didn't think you would.
00:14:27And you guys stay here, while Glimpi and I go peruse the layout.
00:14:28And you guys stay here, while Glimpi and I go peruse the layout.
00:14:33Understand?
00:14:34What?
00:14:35What's the matter?
00:14:36Is my diction a little delinquent?
00:14:37Is my pronunciation so profound?
00:14:37Glimpi!
00:14:38You can go with me.
00:14:39You can go with me.
00:14:42What's the matter? Is my diction a little delinquent? Is my pronunciation so profound?
00:14:51Glimpse! You can go with me.
00:15:08Mr. Duncan, I understand you were Wilson's manager.
00:15:11Yes, we were closer than that. We were friends for many years.
00:15:15And you, miss...
00:15:17Miss Diane Gibson.
00:15:19Miss Gibson, you work for Mr. Wilson?
00:15:21Well, I entertain in one of his clubs.
00:15:24And you were also, shall we say, closer than that?
00:15:29Well, I...
00:15:34Yes, I guess it's safe to say closer than that.
00:15:38Good morning, officer. I suppose the body's still inside.
00:15:40Hey, where do you think you're going?
00:15:42Oh, you remember me, don't you?
00:15:44No, I don't.
00:15:46Well, I work for the Eden Express. I'm Jim Lindsay's assistant. This is my assistant.
00:15:50We were sent up here to cover this case.
00:15:52Representing your place, huh?
00:15:54What a laugh.
00:15:55Go on, beat it.
00:15:56That's a nice way to treat the fourth estate.
00:15:58You heard what I said. Beat it.
00:16:00Your authority supersedes my iniquity.
00:16:02But if that's the way you feel about it, if you ever get a promotion, we won't even put your picture in our paper.
00:16:08We won't even spell your name right.
00:16:10Please.
00:16:19Hey, Glimpy.
00:16:20What?
00:16:21You see what I see?
00:16:25McGuire, the cop.
00:16:26That bad?
00:16:27No, it's good.
00:16:28I'll go over and disengage him in a conversation while you see if you can find an open window or something.
00:16:32And then what?
00:16:35It's a good thing I don't want to attract any attention.
00:16:38As soon as you find a means answer, you signal me and I'll ditch McGuire.
00:16:41Then we can prolong our investigation.
00:16:43Okay, chief.
00:16:49Oh, well, hiya, McGuire.
00:16:51Well, uh, how are you, Esselberg?
00:16:54Oh, McGuire, please. I'm growing up now. Let's dispense with those social amenities.
00:16:58The name is Muggs.
00:16:59Well, what are you doing so far away from the Atlantic Street, Muggs?
00:17:02Haven't you heard?
00:17:03I've got a white-collar job with Evening Express.
00:17:05Worked directly under Jim Lindsay.
00:17:07You remember Jim, don't you?
00:17:09Oh, yes. Everybody in the force knows him. He's a nice boy.
00:17:11A fine broth of a lad.
00:17:13His father before him was, too.
00:17:15Yes, and my father also.
00:17:17Certainly was. You ain't seen him around, have you?
00:17:19Your father?
00:17:20No, no, Jim.
00:17:21No, he ain't showed up yet.
00:17:22Well, I guess I'll wait for him inside.
00:17:24I guess you'll wait for him outside.
00:17:27Your guess is as good as mine.
00:17:29How is your father now?
00:17:30Well, he's pretty good. Suffering from a slight incarceration, though.
00:17:33Is that so?
00:17:34How about 30 days?
00:17:35Oh, he's got to watch them things.
00:17:37Got to watch them judges, too.
00:17:38Yeah?
00:17:49What is that?
00:17:50What? I didn't hear nothing.
00:17:52You mean to say you didn't hear that whistle?
00:17:54Oh, that whistle?
00:17:55It's probably just a bird.
00:17:57Oh, you're trying to give me the point.
00:17:59That's what.
00:18:00Give you the bird, Mac.
00:18:02You know me better than that.
00:18:04Never give you the bird.
00:18:05You know, I learned a good trick last night.
00:18:07You did, eh?
00:18:08Got a half a dollar, I'll show it to you.
00:18:09Well, I haven't got a half a dollar, but I got a lucky coin here that I've carried for 30 years.
00:18:14Is this a power trick?
00:18:15Oh, that's the kind whose father you're in.
00:18:17You just take the half a dollar.
00:18:18Take the lucky coin, you hold it between your forefinger and something like this.
00:18:21Yes.
00:18:22You move it in your left hand.
00:18:23Pass it across the coin, therefore depreciating its whole value like that.
00:18:25Yes.
00:18:27Oh, I dropped it.
00:18:28Oh, Mac, I'm drastically sorry I lost your lucky piece.
00:18:31Where is it?
00:18:32Where is it?
00:18:33I don't know.
00:18:34It's dropped in the grass there.
00:18:35Hey, listen, I've had that for 30 years.
00:18:36I don't want to lose it.
00:18:37You know, I won that.
00:18:38That stirs my deepest sympathy, Mac.
00:18:40I'd help you look for it, but I just had these pants pressed.
00:18:43When I was anchorman on the tug-of-war team for the 13th Precinct,
00:18:47and somebody cut the rope, and we went back, and I went down in the mud.
00:18:56Well, sure enough, but where is that thing now?
00:18:59Oh, I have it.
00:19:01I have it.
00:19:02I found it, Ethelbert.
00:19:15Have either one of you any idea who might have committed this crime,
00:19:18or know any person who might have had a reason for killing him?
00:19:21No, I can't think of anyone.
00:19:24Well, that's hardly fair.
00:19:25Ready to take notes.
00:19:26Fishing on innocent people.
00:19:28Well, if they're innocent, they have nothing to worry about.
00:19:31Well, of course, you know, his ex-wife's been bothering him lately.
00:19:35You mean Gypsy Carmen?
00:19:37That's right.
00:19:38Been demanding a lot of money.
00:19:40In fact, Wilson told me that several times she's, well, threatened him.
00:19:45Yes, I guess that's right.
00:19:47Well, go on.
00:19:48I simply suggested he report it to the authorities.
00:19:51He said he didn't want any bad publicity.
00:19:53Harry, hey.
00:19:54I spoke to Harry.
00:19:57The OPS.
00:19:58I spoke to that.
00:19:59Hey, don't use shorthand.
00:20:02You handled the divorce case?
00:20:04Yes, I did.
00:20:05Mm-hmm, and you were the, uh, that is, you were mentioned, uh...
00:20:10Well, I, uh...
00:20:13Mm-hmm.
00:20:14I consider that he made a very generous settlement on his ex-wife.
00:20:17It sounds fair for Gypsy Carmen to get a lot of consequential evidence.
00:20:21Well, until the fingerprint men finish,
00:20:23we haven't anything but these gloves to go on
00:20:25and the fact that he was killed by a .38 caliber bullet.
00:20:28These gloves were found on the floor.
00:20:30Everything here.
00:20:31I'm not going there.
00:20:32Mr. Wilson was killed.
00:20:33There's the house boy, Lieutenant.
00:20:39Was you the one who phoned the police that Mr. Wilson was murdered?
00:20:42Yes, sir.
00:20:43How did you know he was murdered?
00:20:44Well, sir, I was clearing the dishes in the dining room when I heard a shot.
00:20:48When I came in here, I saw Mr. Wilson dead.
00:20:51And then what?
00:20:53To the best of my recollection, I stopped running.
00:20:56I was six blocks down the street before I thought of turning,
00:20:59so I stopped in the corner drug store.
00:21:02Did you see anything that looked suspicious?
00:21:05I had no time to notice nothing, sir, unless it was that woman.
00:21:09Woman?
00:21:10What woman?
00:21:11That woman that was, that was running on the sidewalk ahead of me.
00:21:14What was she like?
00:21:15I didn't see her very good.
00:21:17I went by so fast, boss.
00:21:18But she was wearing a fuzzy coat, a funny hat, and a veil.
00:21:23You did?
00:21:24Funny little hat with a veil and a fuzzy coat.
00:21:26Hat with a veil coat.
00:21:27Did you happen to notice where she went?
00:21:29Seems to me she was heading for a yellow cab.
00:21:31I don't suppose you got the number of the cab?
00:21:33Well, the only thing I got was, uh,
00:21:35seems to me there was a big dent in the front fender.
00:21:38Get that.
00:21:39Yellow cab with a dent in the fender.
00:21:41That might be a little intricate, is that?
00:21:44Lot of cabs in this town.
00:21:46A pair of gloves and a dent in the front fender.
00:21:49Come on, we got work to do.
00:21:50What kind of work?
00:21:51Process of illumination.
00:21:53Exactly.
00:21:55Age before beauty.
00:21:57Beauty before age.
00:22:06Did you see the stuff that got mopped?
00:22:08He certainly did.
00:22:09The place is knee-deep in blood.
00:22:13You better mop up, too.
00:22:14Mop up what?
00:22:15The blood off your feet.
00:22:16Oh, yeah.
00:22:18It's a good thing you guys didn't go along.
00:22:20It was cruel.
00:22:21We left just as rigorous mortars came in.
00:22:23Yeah, then his brother came post-mortem.
00:22:24Yeah?
00:22:25Well, let's go.
00:22:31Hiya, Sarge.
00:22:32Hiya, Jimmy.
00:22:33Mind if I park this?
00:22:34Go ahead.
00:22:39So where's the lieutenant?
00:22:41Don't tell me there's been a murder committed
00:22:42while my back was sank.
00:22:43Yeah.
00:22:44He was shot this morning.
00:22:45Thomas Wilson shot?
00:22:46Yeah.
00:22:47Didn't Jane tell you?
00:22:48No.
00:22:49The lieutenant's over there now, checking up.
00:22:51Holy cow.
00:22:52Mind if I use your phone?
00:22:54Go ahead.
00:22:5510 minutes to get me Express.
00:22:57Make a pass, will you, Mamie?
00:23:02Good morning, Express.
00:23:03Mr. Cartwright's office.
00:23:05Hello, honey.
00:23:06Thomas Wilson's just been murdered.
00:23:07Oh, I've heard.
00:23:08Where have you been?
00:23:09The auction.
00:23:10It just erupts the living room.
00:23:11It flew with the most wonderful pets.
00:23:14Huh?
00:23:16My police headquarters.
00:23:17Got any dope on the story?
00:23:19Who is it, Lindsay?
00:23:20That's very good.
00:23:22I'll tell him.
00:23:24Yes, it's Jim.
00:23:28Hello?
00:23:31Hello?
00:23:33Hello?
00:23:37He's working on the Wilson murder case.
00:23:43By the way, what is the Wilson place?
00:23:45Rampard Avenue, 1200 block.
00:23:46Thanks.
00:23:52Hey, get out.
00:23:53Shut up.
00:23:54I'll be right back.
00:23:55That's the busiest man in town.
00:23:57Looks like it.
00:24:00Hey!
00:24:03Looks like it might be it.
00:24:04Hey, you.
00:24:05Come here.
00:24:06I'll come when I'm good and ready.
00:24:07What did you say?
00:24:08I'm ready.
00:24:09All right.
00:24:10Get over there then.
00:24:11Hey.
00:24:12You drive this hack?
00:24:13I don't push it.
00:24:15I want to ask you a little inquisition.
00:24:17Inquisition?
00:24:18What race is he in?
00:24:19Forget that paper for a minute.
00:24:20Come back here.
00:24:21This is business.
00:24:22I want to know if you picked up a woman on Rampard Avenue this morning.
00:24:24Sure.
00:24:25I picked up lots of women.
00:24:26This one you'll remember.
00:24:27She was nervous and excited.
00:24:28She had a thing on her head with a big veil and a fuzzy coat.
00:24:30A thing on her head with a big veil and a fuzzy coat?
00:24:33Yeah.
00:24:34Yeah, I picked up a woman like that.
00:24:37Why?
00:24:38Well, we found these.
00:24:39We think they belong to her.
00:24:40Figured if we bring them back, we might get a reward.
00:24:42Of course, we'd touch in 50-50.
00:24:44Ah, no, not 50-50.
00:24:4550-40.
00:24:4655-45, and I don't want no arguments.
00:24:48Where'd you take her?
00:24:49Oh, I took her over to 600 Buck Stevens Hotel on Park Avenue.
00:24:58Thanks.
00:24:59I'll see you later.
00:25:02Well, Bobby George!
00:25:04Hello, McGuire.
00:25:05How are you?
00:25:06Well, the army here sure put me to work.
00:25:09I know.
00:25:10Have you seen Muggs?
00:25:11Yanks?
00:25:12He was just here.
00:25:13Where did he go?
00:25:14Well, I don't know, but I want to see him about something.
00:25:16I want to see him, period.
00:25:18I'm trying to catch up to him.
00:25:19Thanks.
00:25:20Period.
00:25:21Which one of you guys is driving this 564?
00:25:23Me, officer.
00:25:24Your ticket tells me you were cruising around the Greenwich Village section a while ago.
00:25:27Yeah, that's right.
00:25:28Did you pick up a woman who acted kind of excited?
00:25:31Yes.
00:25:32She was wearing a...
00:25:33I know, I know.
00:25:34A fuzzy coat and a funny little hat and a veil.
00:25:36I know, I know.
00:25:37Remember her?
00:25:38Er...
00:25:39Remember her, I say.
00:25:40Listen, by now, I ought to know like my own sister.
00:25:42Never mind the wisecrack.
00:25:43Where did you take her?
00:25:44I took her to a...
00:25:45Let me see...
00:25:46Steven's apartment on Park Avenue.
00:25:5122nd Precinct.
00:25:52Sergeant Ryan talking.
00:25:54Steven's apartment, sir.
00:25:56Okay, where are you?
00:25:58All right, I'll send a car right over.
00:26:01Take her up.
00:26:02Bring her in.
00:26:09Thank you.
00:26:12Wait a minute.
00:26:13Wait a minute.
00:26:14We can't go busting in here like that.
00:26:15This ain't no free lunch counter.
00:26:17It's a very indistinctive hotel.
00:26:19I think I'd better go in alone.
00:26:20I'll make a better impression.
00:26:22First of all, I'll find out Jiffy's room number.
00:26:24Then I'll signal you guys and you can sneak in while I'm diminishing the manager's attention.
00:26:27Got that?
00:26:28Right.
00:26:29What's he saying?
00:26:36Good afternoon.
00:26:37Good afternoon.
00:26:38I'd like to see the manager.
00:26:39I'm the manager.
00:26:40You're the manager?
00:26:41Yes.
00:26:42Anything I can do for you?
00:26:43I'd like Jiffy's common room number.
00:26:45It's 218.
00:26:46218?
00:26:47218?
00:26:49Well, would you have a bellhop show me up?
00:26:51I'm sorry.
00:26:52We haven't any bellhops.
00:26:53You haven't any bellhops?
00:26:54No.
00:26:55Of course, even if you did have some, they couldn't show me up because I'm a pretty big man in this town.
00:26:59Muggs McInnes.
00:27:00You ever hear of me?
00:27:01No.
00:27:02You haven't been reading newspapers lately.
00:27:04I'll have to see that you get a subscription to our paper, the Express.
00:27:07We have a boy that delivers the papers.
00:27:09Delivers them?
00:27:10Do I look like a delivery boy?
00:27:12Yes.
00:27:13Oh, you puncture my ego.
00:27:15It's a terrible thing to do to somebody you only know 10 minutes.
00:27:17Puncture their ego.
00:27:19By the way, you're a pretty nice looking girl.
00:27:22Do you think we could arrange a taste of some tea and coffee some afternoon?
00:27:26I'm afraid the owners wouldn't like that.
00:27:28The owners?
00:27:29I don't want to take the owners out.
00:27:30I'm talking to you.
00:27:31Well, let's put an end to all these terminological inexactitudes.
00:27:35I'm going up and see Gypsy.
00:27:37I'm sorry.
00:27:38Miss Carmen isn't seeing anyone.
00:27:39Oh, but she'll see me.
00:27:40It's very impulsive.
00:27:41I said I'm sorry.
00:27:42Miss Carmen is not seeing anyone.
00:27:45Don't you think that you are being a little recalcitrant?
00:27:48Miss Carmen isn't seeing anyone.
00:27:57I still think you're a very detractive young lady.
00:28:01Oh, Clampett's going out.
00:28:04Here's some aesthetics for you.
00:28:12My tea, please.
00:28:13Good afternoon, Mr. McLintock.
00:28:17Milk?
00:28:19One, yes.
00:28:21Any cold?
00:28:23Carol Crane, shopkeeper.
00:28:25Oh, fine.
00:28:26Something you've been waiting for.
00:28:28Yes, I'd love to have it, but tonight...
00:28:56Yes?
00:28:57Who is it?
00:28:58It's me, Miss Hackle.
00:28:59The maid.
00:29:00I've got some clean towels for y'all.
00:29:02All right.
00:29:03Come on in.
00:29:04Yes, ma'am.
00:29:10216 and 219.
00:29:12I think it's down the other way.
00:29:14Right here.
00:29:18There it is.
00:29:19Let me see.
00:29:22Yeah, but how are we going to get in?
00:29:25Stop asking questions.
00:29:34Who is it?
00:29:35It's me, Miss Carman.
00:29:36The maid.
00:29:37I've got some clean towels for y'all.
00:29:42All right.
00:29:43Just a minute.
00:29:44What does she mean?
00:29:47Don't be so premeditated, Miss Carman.
00:29:52What right have you got breaking in here like this?
00:29:54What are you doing here?
00:29:55Who are you, anyway?
00:29:56Now, don't go having no apoplectic fits.
00:29:58We can't cure him.
00:29:59I presume that you're Miss Carman?
00:30:01No, I'm not.
00:30:02You made a mistake.
00:30:03I...
00:30:04I didn't make no mistake.
00:30:05And I don't need no confirmation for that last statement, either.
00:30:07I've already seen your pictures.
00:30:08Now, just come over here and sit down.
00:30:10We'll talk this thing over nice and peacefully.
00:30:12Nobody be hurt.
00:30:13Nobody be ruffled.
00:30:15Now, I know a little about this Wilson guy.
00:30:17I know he was no good.
00:30:18I know he's a regular heel.
00:30:20I even think he had it coming to him.
00:30:22I'd go one step further.
00:30:23I only happen to be there.
00:30:25What right have you got to question me?
00:30:27Who are you, anyway?
00:30:28Well, I'm a reporter on Evening Express.
00:30:29It's the biggest newspaper in town.
00:30:31You'll hear a lot about me someday.
00:30:32That's a different story.
00:30:34I have an inclination to be prejudiced on your behalf.
00:30:36But I can't be of no assistance, none so ever,
00:30:38unless you will give me your fullest cooperation.
00:30:40But I don't know anything, I tell you.
00:30:42Well, you already admitted that you were present
00:30:44when the victim was fatally incapacitated.
00:30:46Yes.
00:30:47And then what?
00:30:48Now, there's the $64 question.
00:30:51Lumpy, what are you doing?
00:30:52I don't know.
00:30:53I must have lost my mind.
00:30:55Dementia pre-catch.
00:30:56Will you please proceed?
00:30:58Well, we were discussing some private affairs,
00:31:00and I heard a shot.
00:31:02It must have come from the window.
00:31:04But I don't know who fired it.
00:31:05That shot being the same that found its destination
00:31:07in the victim's body?
00:31:09Yes.
00:31:10And then what?
00:31:11Shatter!
00:31:12Please continue, Miss Collins.
00:31:14Everything went blank.
00:31:15It was no blank, honey.
00:31:16You killed the guy.
00:31:18Will you please keep your big Zeppelin nose out of this?
00:31:22If you want, Miss Collins.
00:31:24Well, then I must have lost my head.
00:31:25The next thing I remember was a taxi cab
00:31:27and coming here and...
00:31:28Oh, you do believe me, don't you?
00:31:30Yes, I do.
00:31:32But I'm a little bit biased.
00:31:34And you're right.
00:31:35I don't think the cops would believe that story.
00:31:36In fact, I think they'd tear it down into shreds.
00:31:42Hey, Mark, come here.
00:31:44Come in here.
00:31:49Get back.
00:31:50It's the cops.
00:31:51You think they're coming up here?
00:31:52I wouldn't be a bit surprised.
00:31:53Cops have a way of finding out things, you know.
00:31:55See, if they find us here with a dame,
00:31:56they might think we have something to do with the murder.
00:31:58They ain't gonna find us here with a dame.
00:31:59In fact, they ain't even gonna find us here.
00:32:00Fine.
00:32:01Let's go home.
00:32:02Get back there.
00:32:03We're gonna decoy them.
00:32:04We're gonna decoy them.
00:32:05I can get arrested for that.
00:32:06Indubitably.
00:32:07Look, the last time you were at Wilson's,
00:32:09you had on kind of a camouflage hat with a big veil
00:32:11and a fuzzy coat.
00:32:12Yes.
00:32:13You got that here?
00:32:14Yes.
00:32:15Could I see it, please?
00:32:16Over there.
00:32:18Here it is.
00:32:19Thanks.
00:32:20Well, what are we gonna do?
00:32:22Shh.
00:32:23I'm dissolving a thought.
00:32:25Firstly, we gotta ditch them cops.
00:32:27Secondly, somebody has to go over to Wilson's
00:32:29and tell Jim we're at the club.
00:32:31Just a second a minute.
00:32:33Are you a Gypsy Carmen living here?
00:32:35Why, yes.
00:32:36Is she in?
00:32:37Yes, she is.
00:32:38What's the room number?
00:32:39218.
00:32:40Thank you.
00:32:48Oh, uh, just a minute.
00:33:10There she is.
00:33:17There she is.
00:33:48Worked like a charm.
00:33:50What a brink.
00:33:51Absolutely subnormal.
00:33:53If this makes me look guiltier than ever,
00:33:55I should give myself up.
00:33:56Give yourself up?
00:33:57What, before our paper has a chance to prepare a line of defense?
00:34:00You can't do that.
00:34:01Furthermore, you're in no condition now to face a third degree.
00:34:04But it seems so useless, so hopeless.
00:34:06Just leave everything to me.
00:34:07We'll just sneak you over to our club
00:34:09and let you hide there until I got a chance to figure this thing out.
00:34:12You got any slacks?
00:34:13Yes.
00:34:14You better put them on.
00:34:16This will probably take about three days.
00:34:26You should get that license, brother.
00:34:4236U538.
00:35:1236U538.
00:35:1536U538.
00:35:1836U538.
00:35:43Good afternoon, Officer.
00:35:44Good afternoon.
00:35:48Phew.
00:35:49I thought we'd never get out of there.
00:35:51It looked for a minute like that copper would get wise to me.
00:35:53I'd better get those papers.
00:35:55You coming along with me?
00:35:56No, I have my car down here.
00:35:58OK.
00:35:59See you later.
00:36:13Halt!
00:36:17Bumpy?
00:36:18George.
00:36:19Hello, Mr. Johnson.
00:36:20Boy, you're looking wonderful.
00:36:22Gee, the Army is certainly making a man out of you.
00:36:25Thanks.
00:36:26I feel pretty good.
00:36:27Say, have you seen Mugs and the gang?
00:36:28Yeah, they were here a little while ago.
00:36:29Where'd they go?
00:36:30Stephen's apartment.
00:36:31I parked in there.
00:36:32Stephen's apartment.
00:36:33Thanks, Mr. Johnson.
00:36:34You're welcome.
00:36:35You're welcome.
00:36:36You're welcome.
00:36:37You're welcome.
00:36:38You're welcome.
00:36:39You're welcome.
00:36:40You're welcome.
00:36:41Thanks, Mr. Johnson.
00:36:42So long, Ralphie.
00:36:43Don't get sociable.
00:36:44What's this point of protection?
00:36:46I think we're down to clubs.
00:37:01And I can delegate you to the seat of honor, if you please.
00:37:04Delegate.
00:37:06The meeting is now called to order.
00:37:08Let me take a minute.
00:37:11One, two, three, four.
00:37:13What are you doing, you silly man?
00:37:15Taking a minute.
00:37:16The notes with the pencil and paper.
00:37:19Now, Ms. Common, first of all, I don't want you to worry about a thing.
00:37:21This is the last place in the world a cop would expect to find you.
00:37:24However, while we're tracking down the guilty party, or parties, whichever the case may be,
00:37:28we've got to find a means of sustaining the inner woman.
00:37:30Inner woman?
00:37:31Oh, she ain't ever heard of her before.
00:37:33Yes, several.
00:37:34You've got to eat.
00:37:35You've got to have some nutrition.
00:37:36Oh, no, thanks.
00:37:37I am.
00:37:38Oh, you slut, and you.
00:37:40How do you get down to the business on me?
00:37:41Ms. Common, if I'm going to be your defense attorney, I can ask you a few simple questions.
00:37:44Where were you on the night...
00:37:45In the words of that great Chinese detective,
00:37:48remember one son, please refrain from breaking train of thought, please.
00:37:53Sorry, Pop.
00:37:59Now, about your unfortunate predicament.
00:38:01I told you before, I didn't do it, and I don't know who did.
00:38:03Hey, Pop, could I ask you a simple question?
00:38:06How does one son get simple kiss-a-pushed in if he don't keep simple flappy shutting?
00:38:12Sorry.
00:38:14Ms. Common, let me rephrase that last statement.
00:38:16Do you have any evidence to prove the contention that you're not guilty?
00:38:19Yes, I still have my gun with all the shells in it.
00:38:21You mean you were packing a rod?
00:38:23I mean, you were in possession of a concealed weapon at the time of the misdemeanor?
00:38:27Oh, yes, I have it here.
00:38:32Nice and tight.
00:38:34Holy mackerel!
00:38:36This is a .32!
00:38:37A what?
00:38:38Oh, nothing.
00:38:39Nothing at all, except as you will recollect with your broken-down brain,
00:38:42Wilson was shot with a .38.
00:38:44So maybe she used bigger bullets.
00:38:47Will you please put that away, Ms. Common, before I have some tragic temptations?
00:38:52Good thing for you I've got better things on my mind.
00:38:55Come on, we've got to get back to the office and tell Jim about this.
00:38:57It'll be the biggest scoop of the year.
00:38:59You just sit here and make yourself at home.
00:39:00If you get hungry, you'll find some crackers in the pantry.
00:39:02Let's go.
00:39:07Pardon me, miss.
00:39:08Is Muggs McGinnis here?
00:39:10Who?
00:39:11Muggs McGinnis.
00:39:12Well, I don't know him.
00:39:13Well, he's a little fellow with black hair and a pug nose.
00:39:16Oh, that one.
00:39:17He was here, but he left.
00:39:18He did?
00:39:19Do you know where he went?
00:39:20No, and I don't care.
00:39:23Thanks.
00:39:26And you say he was shot in the back, huh?
00:39:28Well, the lieutenant figured the shot came through the window.
00:39:31How'd he figure that?
00:39:32How do I know?
00:39:33I ain't a lieutenant.
00:39:34Here's another angle, McGuire.
00:39:36Suppose the murderer knocked at the door.
00:39:39Wilson let him in.
00:39:40Yes.
00:39:41Then as he tried to walk back to his chair,
00:39:43Yes.
00:39:44the murderer let him have it in the back like this.
00:39:45Yes.
00:39:46Swishing around this way, falling forward, then going all the way back.
00:39:51Good?
00:39:52I don't think so, no.
00:39:53All right, I'll show you.
00:39:54Now, when I knock at the door, you let me in.
00:39:55Okay, I get you.
00:40:02Something's coming.
00:40:17Hey, what happened?
00:40:18Ain't you gonna knock?
00:40:26Why pull me up?
00:40:27Now I know we're on the right track.
00:40:29What's that?
00:40:30Sure there was, here's the way I got it figured.
00:40:33Wilson saw the murderer draw a gun.
00:40:35He made a grab for him.
00:40:36Yes.
00:40:37They started a struggle.
00:40:38Yes.
00:40:39It must have been a terrific one because he dropped the button.
00:40:40While Wilson's back was turned, he let him have it.
00:40:42Perfect.
00:40:43Now all we've got to do is find the guy who belongs to the button.
00:40:46That's right.
00:40:47If you stick by me, you'll get a swell promotion out of this.
00:40:49Yeah?
00:40:50You mean that they might make me a sergeant?
00:40:51What sergeant?
00:40:52They're likely to make you a lieutenant, maybe even a captain.
00:40:54Woo!
00:40:55What a story.
00:40:57Murderer's book.
00:40:59Have you seen anything of Lyndon?
00:41:01Never mind.
00:41:02Where in blazes have you been?
00:41:04Oh, boss, where do you think I've been?
00:41:06Getting some dope on the Wilson case.
00:41:08Got it all untangled, I suppose.
00:41:10If it's really untangled, I could reenact the crime for you.
00:41:12Ask my buyer.
00:41:13I think he could, Mr. Cartwright.
00:41:15Come pretty close to it, anyway.
00:41:16Know who the killer is?
00:41:17Well, I haven't gotten that far yet.
00:41:18But I do know it was no mystery woman.
00:41:20It was a powerful man.
00:41:21Very interesting.
00:41:22It's true.
00:41:23It is true.
00:41:24Here, let me show you.
00:41:25Now look, this is Wilson's living room.
00:41:26This is the door the murderer came through.
00:41:28Wilson saw him in time, and the struggle started.
00:41:30A terrific struggle.
00:41:31Wilson was no pygmy, but the intruder was too much for him.
00:41:33They fought back to about here.
00:41:35Wilson broke loose.
00:41:36The murderer let him have him in the back.
00:41:37Amazing.
00:41:38How are you going to prove it?
00:41:39The only tangible clue that was found was to see in the crack.
00:41:42This button was dropped off the murderer's coat during the struggle.
00:41:44Pure theory.
00:41:45A man doesn't have to struggle to lose a button off his coat.
00:41:48Besides, it may have come off of any coat.
00:41:50Possibly Wilson's.
00:41:51We investigated all them angles.
00:41:53That's what took us so long.
00:41:54We went down to the morgue, and Wilson had all his buttons.
00:41:57What's more, I'll lay out.
00:41:58When we find a monkey that dropped this button,
00:42:00we'll show if this case patterned a clamp.
00:42:02This is a darn good city to find a button.
00:42:04Oh, hello, Jim.
00:42:05Hello, honey.
00:42:06I found plenty of two-letter on my next expense account.
00:42:12That isn't much of a match, but maybe it'll do.
00:42:15A little too small, aren't they?
00:42:17I think so.
00:42:18Not a very good match in color.
00:42:20No.
00:42:24Well, that's a perfect match.
00:42:26Forget it.
00:42:27Does this coat belong to you, Mr. Cartwright?
00:42:29Well, it looks like my coat, and it was hanging where my coat usually hangs.
00:42:33What were you doing in the Wilson home?
00:42:35Oh, don't be ridiculous.
00:42:36Why should I go there?
00:42:37I don't even know the man.
00:42:38That's no alibi.
00:42:40Oh, for Pete's sake.
00:42:41Now, wait a minute, McGuire.
00:42:42There must be some mistake.
00:42:43Mr. Cartwright didn't have any motive for killing Wilson.
00:42:45Maybe not.
00:42:46But just the same, I'm going to keep the department informed
00:42:48of his whereabouts at all times.
00:42:50I advise you not to try to leave town without letting us know.
00:42:54Why don't you give yourself up?
00:42:56Sorry to break the news on you, Mr. Cartwright,
00:42:58but there's something that has to be explained.
00:42:59Now what?
00:43:00We were just about to grab the woman in the Wilson case
00:43:02when she escaped in an automobile.
00:43:03We got the license number, and according to the record,
00:43:05the car belongs to your paper.
00:43:07What is this, a conspiracy?
00:43:08It sure sounds phony to me.
00:43:10First, you drop this button on the scene of the crime,
00:43:12and then you lend your car to a confederate for a getaway.
00:43:15I think you better come down to headquarters with me.
00:43:17Now, wait a minute, McGuire.
00:43:18I can explain.
00:43:19You shut up.
00:43:20Now listen, McGuire.
00:43:21Save your breath for the captain.
00:43:22Excuse me.
00:43:23No, you don't.
00:43:24It's OK the way it stands.
00:43:25Come on, you.
00:43:26Don't worry about a thing, boss.
00:43:27I'll go down and see the chief and fix everything.
00:43:29You'll do nothing of the kind.
00:43:30You've done enough fixing already.
00:43:31You're fired.
00:43:32And if I ever see your face around here again, Lizzie,
00:43:35by all that's holy, I will commit murder.
00:43:39Come on, you.
00:43:40Pardon me.
00:43:43Come on.
00:43:44Get going.
00:43:46Sorry, darling.
00:43:48I seem to put my foot in it every time.
00:43:50Oh, don't worry, honey.
00:43:51Everything will be all right.
00:43:53You think so?
00:44:02Hey, Jim.
00:44:03I got some great news for you.
00:44:04So what?
00:44:05Oh, cheer up.
00:44:06When this hits the press, you'll be the ace reporter
00:44:07on a tabloid.
00:44:08Yeah, it's a little too late, don't you think?
00:44:10Cartwright's on his way to police headquarters, and I'm fired.
00:44:12Fired?
00:44:13Cartwright can't do that.
00:44:14He just did it.
00:44:15Oh, what happened?
00:44:16Oh, it's a long story.
00:44:17Oh, come on.
00:44:18Tell us what happened.
00:44:19Well, I found a button out of Wilson's house
00:44:21that looked like a sure clue as a murderer.
00:44:22And then the cops finally came off the Boston coast.
00:44:25Remember that?
00:44:26Cartwright a murderer.
00:44:27Oh, don't be silly.
00:44:28Mr. Cartwright isn't a murderer.
00:44:29Well, how'd that button get out of Wilson's, then?
00:44:31I don't know.
00:44:32Button?
00:44:33Hey, I lost a button with him making my mother.
00:44:35You probably lost it out at Wilson's.
00:44:38Hey, that's probably the button they found.
00:44:40Why don't you guys go out to Wilson's house?
00:44:42We ain't got no time to talk about that now.
00:44:44Come on, let's go.
00:44:45Where are you going?
00:44:46I'm going down to police headquarters
00:44:47and tell this whole story to the chief.
00:44:48Stop saving things.
00:44:49Should I save money?
00:44:51Keep your fingers crossed.
00:44:55Oh, thank you.
00:44:56You mind?
00:44:57You mind?
00:44:58Oh, hey, Jim.
00:44:59First we gotta get out of the club
00:45:00and pick up the misty woman.
00:45:01What misty woman?
00:45:02Gypsy Carmen.
00:45:03We got her hidden over there.
00:45:04Are you crazy?
00:45:05Well, that's a moot question.
00:45:06Don't you realize you can get yourself in a jam
00:45:07by obstructing justice?
00:45:08You mean I can get arrested?
00:45:09Indubitably.
00:45:10Besides, we gotta pick up Skinny at Wilson's.
00:45:12We're not going to Wilson's.
00:45:13We're going down to get Gypsy Carmen.
00:45:15Jim, you're confusing my plan.
00:45:17You're the only one that's confused.
00:45:18Come on, you moron.
00:45:19Oh, chief, you shut your big gaping mouth.
00:45:22Alley-oop.
00:45:26Well, lieutenant, here he is.
00:45:27Here who is?
00:45:28The guy that killed Wilson.
00:45:29We got him dead to rights.
00:45:30Oh, this is preposterous.
00:45:32I never heard that.
00:45:33Stop, stop.
00:45:34This button was found on the scene of the crime.
00:45:36And there's the coat of belongs on.
00:45:38See?
00:45:39Right there.
00:45:40Now, wait a minute.
00:45:41I'll admit the button came off my coat.
00:45:42But I've never been within a mile of the Wilson's place.
00:45:45And I suppose you don't know Gypsy Carmen.
00:45:47No, I don't.
00:45:48Then what was she doing riding around in one of your cars?
00:45:52I don't know.
00:45:53Maybe she was delivering papers.
00:45:55Yeah, maybe she was.
00:45:57Lieutenant, it's as simple as two and two.
00:46:00The two of them did the job.
00:46:01Why don't you go jump in the river?
00:46:02Why, I'll...
