In India Donaldson’s insightful, piercing debut, 17-year-old Sam (Collias) embarks on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills with her dad, Chris (Le Gros) and his oldest friend, Matt (McCarthy). As the two men quickly settle into a gently quarrelsome brotherly dynamic, airing long-held grievances, Sam, wise beyond her years, attempts to mediate. But when lines are crossed and Sam’s trust is betrayed, tensions reach a fever pitch, as Sam struggles with her dad’s emotional limitations and experiences the universal moment when the parental bond is tested. Selected in both Sundance and Cannes' Directors' Fortnight, Good One is an emotionally expansive work that probes the limits of familial trust, understanding, and ultimately, forgiveness.

00:18 Come on, come on, come on, come on.
00:20 Woo-hoo!
00:21 We love this.
00:22 Dad.
00:23 Can you get in the back?
00:24 Why do I have to go in the back?
00:26 Because I'm asking you so nicely.
00:28 [music]
00:33 What's my son so angry about?
00:35 His parents' relationship ending.
00:37 Are you eavesdropping on us back there?
00:39 I'm literally a foot away from you.
00:41 [music]
00:43 I don't think I've ever seen you eat this much.
00:45 This is a regular amount of food.
00:47 I didn't even know you ate meat.
00:48 Yeah, I thought you were a vegetarian.
00:50 I've never been a vegetarian, Dad.
00:51 You seem like one, though.
00:53 I'm going the speed limit.
00:54 You're actually going five miles over.
00:56 No, and you always go, like, at least ten over.
00:59 That is my privilege as father.
01:01 She's a better driver than you, man.
01:03 That's because I taught her.
01:04 Damn, that's heavy.
01:05 You're joking.
01:06 What?
01:07 We are hiking all day.
01:09 Yeah.
01:10 So it's going to be a lot heavier after an hour or seven.
01:13 I'm fine.
01:14 [music]
01:24 Sam, do you know where the lighter is?
01:25 Why don't you just rub sticks together?
01:27 You two are fools.
01:28 The best thing you can do is have a family.
01:31 [laughs]
01:32 Stop.
01:33 Sometimes they're going to hate you, and sometimes--
01:37 Oh, Jesus.
01:38 Dad, stop.
01:39 --they're going to even want to hang out with you, like this one.
01:42 [music]
01:48 You OK?
01:49 Other people.
01:50 Welcome.
01:51 It's a nice little spot you got here.
01:52 Yeah.
01:53 Are they stinking?
01:54 That's fine.
01:55 [music]
02:06 You do the bad thing, and the bad thing is all you think about.
02:10 But then you can't even remember what the bad thing was.
02:14 And after a while, it's like it never even happened.
02:17 [music]
02:21 Will you just have a nice day?
