00:02:33 Welcome to part of my take presented by DraftKings play pick six from DraftKings,
00:02:38 a new fantasy app that packs more fun into less time. Download the new DraftKings pick six app.
00:02:44 Now use code take new customers play five bucks and get 50 and pick six credits. That's code take
00:02:51 only on DraftKings pick six. The crown is yours. Today is Wednesday, May 8th, and the Denver
00:02:59 Nuggets are in some deep, deep shit PFT. Yeah, they look really bad. They look terrible
00:03:07 offensively. They look bad defensively. The Minnesota Timberwolves looked awesome defensively,
00:03:13 which had a lot to do with it's not all the Nuggets, but they, they looked out of sorts.
00:03:16 I had a thought and I'm not exactly like a film breakdown guy when it comes to basketball. I don't
00:03:22 know if you know that about me or not, but it seems like every time teams play the Nuggets,
00:03:28 they play the Nuggets game and they try to match up against Yoko in a way that the Timberwolves
00:03:36 didn't even attempt to do last night because they had their hand forced with Rudy Gobert being out
00:03:40 for having sex nine months ago. So by stretching them out and by Yoko didn't, I don't know what
00:03:46 he was doing. He looked like he was just in no man's land defensively for most of the game,
00:03:51 like caught halfway between where he's used to being and where he should be. And they just ate
00:03:55 his lunch. Yeah, no, I mean the Nuggets or the Nuggets are in trouble. I mean, you're right.
00:04:00 Yoke itch. Like he gets stuck in these pick and rolls. He's been swiping at stuff. He's,
00:04:05 he's looked for all the things that people criticize Yoke itch for before his championship
00:04:11 run. It feels like they're coming back right now. I still think he's an incredible player.
00:04:17 One of the best players in the NBA. I'm not ready to bury him right now, but the wolves
00:04:22 feel like they have the Nuggets number and its intensity, defensive intensity and Anthony Edwards
00:04:30 just being a superstar in the making. And like you said, no Rudy Gobert and their defensive,
00:04:35 it like they just have the wolves just have so many dudes that are so big and they're just so
00:04:41 they're, they're, their arms are everywhere. They're, they're defending the entire court.
00:04:45 They're picking up Yoke itch. Like it's, you know, brings a ball up a bunch. They're picking
00:04:50 him up at half court, bothering him there. And it does. It's an interesting subplot because
00:04:56 the guy who helped build the Nuggets, Tim Connelly is the GM for the wolves.
00:05:02 And it feels like the wolves are created to beat the Nuggets and that's what they're doing. And
00:05:08 then you also have the factor of Jamal Murray just having an absolute meltdown, throwing a heat pack
00:05:12 on the floor. People were very upset. I personally can't get that upset about it because I, and this
00:05:21 is a flaw of mine and it is, it's probably a flaw of how I parent as well. If no one gets hurt,
00:05:27 I don't really do any punishments. Like if, if there's not a, if there's not an injury, I'm like,
00:05:31 all right, keep playing. It's fine. I get it. It was pretty, you should have done that. It's a
00:05:35 crazy move, but some people being like, someone could have died out there from that heat pack.
00:05:42 It felt like a lot. The heat culture gone wrong. And when he threw it out there, it looked like he
00:05:47 was throwing it at the ref that I saw. Did you see the zoomed in camera angle? You have like a
00:05:52 Zapruder style film of it that zooms in on him. He's like behind the basket. He looks like he's
00:05:57 trying to hit the ref. I'm willing to give this a pass because that's hilarious. If it had hit the
00:06:01 ref, that would have been very funny. He probably, he probably would have been suspended for maybe
00:06:05 two games if that had happened. Instead, they give him a hundred thousand dollar fine. Same
00:06:09 that Rudy go Berry got for doing the money sign to the refs. But it looked like, I don't think he
00:06:14 was trying to throw it on the court. He was trying to hit the ref because he's pissed at the ref and
00:06:18 he just slid out onto the court. And then everyone was like, Oh, weird. There's a heat pack on the
00:06:21 court. And then you had a subset of people being like, this is the most dangerous thing that I've
00:06:26 ever seen a player do. Right. Exactly. It felt a little aggressive. Jamal Murray did the money
00:06:32 sign as well. Oh, he did that. Yeah. He did the money sign about the refs as well. So he, he was
00:06:37 having an all time meltdown performance where it's like, this is the interesting part because
00:06:42 it is all credit to the wolves. Like the way they're put their six and O in the playoffs,
00:06:47 they are playing like incredible team basketball. They, as Kat told us, they're a big 15 and it
00:06:55 feels that way when they're playing. But the interesting like subplot of all this is, I think
00:07:02 I use subplot twice. Sorry. I apologize. It's late. The interesting moment I'm waiting for,
00:07:08 for Friday night is this is the first time the nuggets feel like they're really, really tested.
00:07:14 Because if you remember last year, they, you know, beat the wolves in five, they beat the suns in
00:07:20 six, they swept the Lakers, they beat the heat in five. They have controlled the playoffs in the,
00:07:26 for the last year and a half, you know, obviously beating the Lakers in five. Now,
00:07:31 like, what do you got? What are you, are you guys, do you have the championship medal? Because now
00:07:36 the pressure is on, you just lost two games at home. You had a total meltdown. Yoka does not
00:07:41 look good. And the wolves are just better right now. Like that's just what it is. They are the
00:07:47 better team all around. Yes. It's not, it's not really close. They've got two coaches too. Their
00:07:53 coaches is sitting down with his torn knee and they have another coach managing like the in-game
00:07:58 shit going on for him. Uh, they're just, they're getting out done in every facet of basketball
00:08:03 right now. The games aren't close. I disagree that they haven't been tested though. They were
00:08:07 tested in this playoffs. They were just tested in the first half of every game. Yeah. And also
00:08:12 Lakers almost beat them. Well, no, this is, this is now a great change to the narrative. Like how
00:08:17 shitty are the Los Angeles Lakers? So shitty. If they were getting beat by these nuggets,
00:08:22 they've, they shouldn't have even been in the playoffs. So, so shitty. And it was, uh, I'm happy
00:08:28 we did that entire week of being like, well, the Lakers just had a really bad matchup with nuggets.
00:08:33 No, the West and we can go, we can stay in the West. The West is just young and deep because
00:08:38 the thunder who hadn't played a game in forever came out. It's like, Giddy likes it. Yeah. They,
00:08:44 they, they came out, Giddy. I always feel so bad. Jake didn't like that one. No,
00:08:50 he didn't like that one. I always feel so bad for guys when they just, uh, like sag off them so much
00:08:54 that they're just like, go ahead and shoot. No problem. We'll let you shoot. Like that's such
00:08:58 an embarrassing thing. If I were Josh Giddy, I would just, I would try to just never be at the
00:09:03 three point line because you know, they're just going to let you shoot and you're going to miss
00:09:06 and it's going to suck. Uh, but the thunder there, I mean, I want to see wolves thunder at this
00:09:12 point. Like it's two young teams that are so exciting. Hank's shaking his head cause he thinks
00:09:17 the cells can be both those teams very easily. Hank, you should listen to the Kirk Goldsberry
00:09:21 interview because I might've said something that you'd be interested in. Uh, you should,
00:09:27 you should actually start rooting for the nuggets. No, he's what I would do. If he doesn't
00:09:32 think the wolves are a tough matchup for the Celtics, they're a tough matchup, but I'd rather
00:09:37 face the wolves or the thunder or the Mavericks and the nuggets still. Okay. Uh, yeah, but anyway,
00:09:44 the thunder, I mean, X doesn't know what I'm just talking about the Kirk Goldsberry interview. Yeah,
00:09:50 yeah. Wait till you get to it. Uh, Hank, uh, the thunder are so young and so much fun. And it feels
00:09:57 like, like SGA was incredible in the first half and then you get to the fourth quarter. It's like,
00:10:02 Oh, we got another really young dude, uh, in Jalen Williams. Who's just going to torch you
00:10:07 and Lou darts everywhere. And it's just like, we said this a couple of weeks ago, but if you're a
00:10:11 thunder fan, I it's thunder or wolves fan. It has to be the like coolest, funnest experience right
00:10:19 now to watch your organic homegrown team be super young and just dominating everyone.
00:10:26 Why? Why are you shaking your head? Don't shake your head. Cause he's like,
00:10:30 cause he's talking about the West tank. We're talking about the West.
00:10:33 Your team's not that young Hank. You're kind of young, but this is like a new age.
00:10:38 Jason Sims, 19 years old age of thunder. And you've had it every single year. Hey, this is,
00:10:44 this is you. You had your moment like four years ago with the Celtics team where you had fun and
00:10:49 they're fun. So let them let other people have fun. It's not always about you. It's it's say
00:10:55 anything for the record. You shook your head. You knew what you did. You shook your head. I know.
00:10:58 We'll get to cocky Hank. We'll get to cocky Hank. You have, you had a great game one, but, uh,
00:11:03 listen, we invited cocky Hank back. So we have to embrace the fact that we're just complimenting the
00:11:08 thunder and he's shaking his head. Like, yeah, that's take him. Listen, if you can't handle him
00:11:15 at a subdued like game by game Hank, then you don't deserve him at cocky Hank. I wanted, we got
00:11:22 a cocky Hank. I fucking love how much I fucking hate Hank right now. It's awesome. Yeah, well,
00:11:30 it's all, this is what we wanted. It really is. So I'm glad that you're back. You piece of shit.
00:11:35 But yeah, I do think this will still be a series, but the fact that the thunder came out on, you
00:11:40 know, all this off all this rest and played that well, I mean, they're just, they're fun to chat
00:11:45 home. Grants fun to watch. They got just guys that are fun to watch and they're all young.
00:11:50 They scream after every play to a lot of emotion, a lot of, and the T-shirts, my God, the T-shirts
00:11:55 tonight in Oklahoma city, it looked like a college stadium. It looked like when, uh, when like
00:12:00 Tennessee does the checkerboard in the stands, some people wear one color. Like there were,
00:12:05 it was a perfect row of blue T-shirts and then a perfect row. Was it, was it, uh, orange or was it
00:12:10 white tonight? I forget, but it was, it was perfectly done. I didn't see a single T-shirt
00:12:14 out of place. They're, they're, they're the best at it. Um, okay. Hank cocky Hank time.
00:12:20 He was correct in areas on pace for his triple dib digits. Uh, prediction blood point differential
00:12:30 in this series, the Celtics won by 25. You probably kind of wish they had maybe gone by like 35. So
00:12:36 you get a little ahead of the pace. Yeah. I mean, they got up so much, they took out the, uh, the
00:12:40 starters, you know, with a lot of time left, but this is good. We're on pace. We're on pace.
00:12:45 This is a joke for you. Yeah. I mean, I, you know, I said going in, they might drop one game,
00:12:51 you know, calves will have a historic shooting night, beat him at home or something, but there
00:12:56 should be a four one, if not four Oh, when, when did you know this one was over? They didn't,
00:13:01 they came out slow. Honestly, they didn't shoot great in the first quarter. I was a little bit
00:13:04 worried. I told you guys, I loved, I love the Celtics spread. I love the Celtics first half.
00:13:08 And in the first quarter, I think it was tied late in the first quarter, but you know, they
00:13:12 turned it on second half, second quarter, Derek white couldn't miss jail and Brown couldn't miss
00:13:18 probably like halfway through the second quarter. That's, that's the scary part is like Jalen Brown
00:13:22 and Derek white were incredible. Jason Tatum was not that great tonight, at least shooting.
00:13:27 And they still say, yeah, right. I know. But I mean, he, I don't think he hit a three and he,
00:13:33 he wasn't like being super aggressive. But like, I'm not saying he played bad. I'm saying that they,
00:13:39 they 25 piece them when Jason Tatum wasn't like on his a game, which is that a fair assessment?
00:13:46 Yeah, no, that's fair. I mean, he was, he was facilitating. This is also, this is also,
00:13:51 yeah, yeah. This is part of a great, a great superstar player, you know, does what it takes
00:13:58 to when he sees that his other guys are having a good night and he just helps facilitate.
00:14:02 It did feel like the most casual blood bath of all time.
00:14:07 Yeah. And PFT, this is, this is the part I forgot about cocky Hank. If you,
00:14:11 if you say that like Jason Tatum, he didn't hit a three, he was over five from three. If you just
00:14:18 state that Hank will be like, well, fuck you. Yeah. Yeah. He'll be like, what are you trying to
00:14:24 say? And we're saying, what big guy said was Jason Tatum didn't have his best night. I think
00:14:31 we can all agree. That's a fact, right? No, not Hank, but Derek, but Derek white was really good
00:14:36 at Derek winning a plus 18 point differential. Like, yeah, that's a great night for Jason Tatum.
00:14:41 Think about it this way, Hank, like a couple of years ago, Derek white,
00:14:45 he's improved so much in the last like two years, three years of his game. Right. And he's very
00:14:50 good. It's undeniable that Derek white is a good player right now. Sorry. He's a, he's a great
00:14:55 player. He's a he's, is he a great player? Is he a very good player? I was MVP plus 4,000. If you
00:15:02 want to get a long shot in early, that's kind of disrespectful to Jason Tatum that you're not
00:15:05 betting on. Oh, he was over five from three PFT. That's a good point. Big cat. Yeah. But I guess
00:15:10 Hank's not a real fan, but, uh, the thing is like, they're, they're all playing well. So I,
00:15:17 with Al Horford in for, for Chris, up for Zingas, didn't seem like it mattered that much. Plus you
00:15:22 got an extra dub that we'll get to in a little bit where, uh, you not only defeated the heat,
00:15:27 you may have just exploded heat culture because of J-butt and, uh, Pat Riley going back and forth.
00:15:33 So you're just, you're, you're vanquishing all your foes right now. You must be feeling really
00:15:37 good. You're like Thanos. I think that that movie ends really well for Thanos.
00:15:42 I think the first one, there was like part two was two parts, right? The first one he, he, he,
00:15:47 yeah. Hank does know he did. Hank and I were driving up to Wrigley last night and I was like,
00:15:52 who's going to, who's going to play with Chris tops out. And he's like Horford,
00:15:56 but it's going to really Luke Cornette's going to be an X factor. Hank knows ball.
00:16:00 He was a beast on the boards. Yeah, he was, he was the X factor.
00:16:07 It was very, very easy for you. And I look forward to many more easy games like this.
00:16:12 Um, last NBA game we got to talk about, uh, the Knicks Pacers game one. I feel bad for Pacers fans.
00:16:18 Now the Knicks are, I mean, Josh Hart had a billion rebounds. Dante DiVincenzo hit all the
00:16:25 big shots. Jalen Brunson still is just playing out of his mind. So it's not taking away from the Knicks.
00:16:31 The last two minutes did suck though, because it was just too much refs. And not even if you're
00:16:37 like, Hey, I'm not saying the Knicks shouldn't have won. I'm just saying there was too much
00:16:42 refs. The, the screen call that they, they called the legal screen, which I guess technically was
00:16:47 wrong, but it happens every game like that. If you take that screen out of the NBA,
00:16:53 bam has to retire tomorrow because that's, that's literally all he does is do that screen.
00:16:59 And then very long legs and they get in your way. Yeah. Yeah. And, and, and, and so it sucked at the
00:17:05 end and it sucked at the Pacers. Like they were, I think it was what they had a chance. They were
00:17:10 down what one. And then next thing, you know, without even a possession happening, they were,
00:17:16 cause it was like Jalen Brunson foul before the inbound free throw. Then another Jalen Brunson.
00:17:21 So like it was game over. It sucked. And my biggest problem with this game is if you're going
00:17:28 to have reviews that take these games so long and we review everything and it's like mind numbing,
00:17:35 how the fuck can't you review a kickball? Because that was actually the thing that
00:17:38 Pacers should be most upset about was that wasn't a kickball on East Smith.
00:17:43 He hit it with his hand and you just can't review it. And that was, that led to Dante
00:17:48 D'Avincenzo's three. That was the moment that like, I can, I can live with the screen. Cause
00:17:52 technically it was an illegal screen, the fucking kick ball. That wasn't a kick ball.
00:17:57 You should be able to review it. Well, it wasn't just that they, they can't review the kickball.
00:18:02 It was that the, the kickball call took away a fast break. Probably would have been two points
00:18:08 at that point. It was a tie game. So not only was it the three that resulted right afterwards,
00:18:12 but it denied the Pacers the opportunity to take what seemed like it probably would have
00:18:15 been a pretty easy lead for them to take at the time. So the fact that it was called in the first
00:18:19 place and then not being able to review, I don't know how they come up with these rules. I'm sure
00:18:22 that's probably one that they'll look at in the off season and be like, yeah, you should
00:18:26 be able to review if it hit off his foot or not. I don't know. But that it did stink.
00:18:30 The moving screen call gave us all PTSD flashbacks of the, uh, the Yukon and Iowa
00:18:37 semi-final game and women's college basketball. Although that was a more egregious screen than
00:18:43 the one in the game last night, the next Pacers one. And I think that there should be a rule
00:18:48 in basketball. If there's, if there's an illegal screen and you flop while you're going into the
00:18:55 illegal screen, you should be able to get away with the illegal screen. Yeah, I agree with that.
00:19:00 You shouldn't fuck if take it like a man and deal with your inconvenience and then they'll call it.
00:19:06 But if you flop and you act like a fish out there, then they're like, you know what?
00:19:10 You cheated too. Yeah. It's all right. Fight through all screens. Um, yeah, I, I just,
00:19:16 when it comes to like instant replay, I I'm an all or nothing guy. I'm cool. If they said tomorrow,
00:19:22 there's no instant replay and we're just going to go with whatever the refs say and the games will
00:19:27 move faster and it will be smoother. I'm all for that. The minute that you start reviewing it,
00:19:32 you got to review everything and get it right. Like you just do. Cause that was such a stupid
00:19:37 thing that they couldn't review. Oh, I'm not, I'm not in favor of reviewing everything. I'm because
00:19:42 I don't, I think that, uh, it's a slippery slope to like getting reps out of the game entirely.
00:19:49 And I like having refs. Can you imagine if there was one night where they just said absolutely no
00:19:53 instant replay, how, how mad people would get at refs? It would be like these reps think
00:20:00 I'm just like, don't do reviews for the majority of the game. Do reviews for the last three
00:20:05 minutes. I don't care. Do every review for the last three minutes. Get it right. If you're going
00:20:09 to have reviews, just get it right. And then just have a play that you can't review. That was
00:20:13 clearly wrong. It makes no sense to me. So I don't know. And then, then the, the next loss,
00:20:18 Mitchell Robinson for, I think the rest of the playoffs, they have no one like they,
00:20:24 they don't play a bench and they're just, it's all tibs. Like just, we're going to fucking
00:20:29 grind this. And you guys are get ready to learn 48 buddy, because that's every guy now.
00:20:34 So they said eight weeks, six to eight weeks. They said they're going to reevaluate in six
00:20:39 to eight weeks. I looked at a calendar, um, that appears to be the entire NBA playoffs.
00:20:45 It's also really mean to do that because then everyone gets just replied. They're not,
00:20:49 there isn't going to be eight weeks from now. Like he doesn't deserve that. Mitchell Robinson's fun
00:20:53 to watch, but yeah, I mean, they're, they don't, they don't play the Mitchell Robinson played 12
00:20:58 minutes last night off the bench. Deuce McBride played 11. That's kind of it. And now you lose
00:21:06 one of them. So I don't know what the fuck they're going to do. Yeah. I mean, that, that could be a
00:21:11 knock against Tibbs that like, he doesn't play a lot of guys even during the regular season.
00:21:15 So he doesn't have anybody that's ready to step up in case somebody gets hurt.
00:21:18 These guys are ready to go though. In fact, the fact that they're like, I think that tips is the
00:21:24 one coach. He just walks in and he's like, you guys are all playing 48 tonight. They're like,
00:21:27 yeah, we've been waiting for this. Max. Are there any Villanova players that do not play in the NBA
00:21:34 that could be picked up by the Knicks? Where's Chris Jenkins. Chris Jenkins is on the Villanova
00:21:41 staff. Love Chris Jenkins. Probably not in NBA game shape right now. Scotty Reynolds,
00:21:46 Scotty Reynolds could easily lace him up and put them out there. He's haven't seen him in years,
00:21:52 but there's, I mean, there's always something about that guy. He he's a gamer. Yeah.
00:21:57 Ryan Archidiakono was on the team earlier this year. I don't think he's very serious.
00:22:03 Connor, Connor Gillespie, him and TJ.
00:22:08 Connor Gillespie's on the nuggets. He's going to be a good player in the NBA. That's a promise.
00:22:14 That's an absolute promise. Okay. I'm done with this experiment. I'm done with this experiment.
00:22:19 It's a promise. Hockey real quick. 54 saves is a fucking shitload of saves.
00:22:27 She's starking on the Rangers tonight. Double overtime. 54 saves. We have our
00:22:32 standing on our head guy. It's just jerking. He's a, he's a beast. Don't shut the fuck up.
00:22:38 Yeah. You stop it, Hank. Listen. All right. Congratulations. I tweeted this out. I saw
00:22:44 Hank liked it. It was not meant to be liked by you. Congratulations to both your Boston Celtics
00:22:50 and your Boston Bruins on winning championships this year. What a magical spring this is for you.
00:22:54 I'm very happy. I would just like to say that I did, I did place a pretty big future
00:23:00 on the Bruins and the Celtics to win both Eastern conferences parlayed.
00:23:04 And when that hits, I will buy you a pair of headphones that you can lean back in your chair.
00:23:09 So nice to you. Yeah. Oh, the story behind these headphones is I went to a real hot streak of
00:23:19 buying headphones in airports before flights that didn't fit my phone. And so I've got these and
00:23:24 I'm like, fuck it. I'm going to use them somewhere. So now I just have them dangling off the side. I
00:23:28 appreciate that. Hank, you're such a generous guy. That's huge, Hank. That's huge of you. But yeah.
00:23:32 Um, are we allowed to say she's stirking played well? Yeah. I mean, he's also got, I think that's
00:23:37 like maybe the best hockey name going. Like I knew that the fans chanting Igor, Igor. It's just a,
00:23:43 it's just a great Igor. It's just a great hockey name. Yeah. And we had in, in Hank, your, your
00:23:49 Bruins did win game one. It's convincingly. Yeah. Against the whole smash. Yeah. Smash. And there's
00:23:54 a game going on right now. Oh, here, here's a fun game that we can do. Memes. I had memes
00:23:58 didn't show up to this, but he mushed Mr. Payer so hard. Oh, so hard. Can I tell you guys something
00:24:03 that I'm, I'm currently worried about and it's a, it's kind of a personal thing, but, um, it's
00:24:08 hockey related. I've gotten, uh, two random DMS from people in the last 24 hours that have told
00:24:16 me that today, Wednesday, a veteran is going to retire. Oh man. And I'm worried about that.
00:24:24 And I'm sad. Okay. Can I make you feel better? Well, also I got deemed from somebody that's
00:24:30 saying that he always dreams of the future and that two nights ago he dreamed I was going to die.
00:24:35 So I'm just, I'm on a real, I'm on a cold streak with the predictions right now. Okay. Let me die.
00:24:41 I hope I died before a vet can retire. So how about that? All right. I got you. I I'm going to,
00:24:45 I'm going to try to make you feel better. The, um, black Hawks got the number two pick tonight
00:24:49 in the lottery. The sharks got number one. So they're going to get celebrating. I'm pretty
00:24:53 sure. And this is all based off of, uh, our colleague chiefs tweets, who is a black Hawks
00:24:58 expert. Uh, he, I I'm pretty sure that there's a Russian guy they're going to draft with the
00:25:02 second pick. Maybe he's just the next Ovechkin. Does that make you feel better that you would get?
00:25:08 Yeah. How does he feel about Putin? I don't know. Is he a big Putin guy that not help the NHL needs
00:25:16 a big Putin guy. I don't know. It's going to be, that's going to be a big time, like, uh,
00:25:20 end of an era because I think unquestionably he's the best athlete in the history of DC sports.
00:25:26 It's like him, Darrell green, probably that's probably a arena's Gilberinas legend. Um, but
00:25:33 anyways, that's just a personal thing I'm dealing with. We can talk about teams that are actually
00:25:36 good now and still in the playoffs, but, uh, yeah, Hanks Bruins are awesome. Uh, congratulations,
00:25:42 Hank, on make, making the Eastern conference finals and winning the Eastern conference finals
00:25:45 in both sports. Yeah. He's muted. Good. I like this. That was great point. Great point. Hank
00:25:52 fuck. It's fun. You know, when you're, when you have these, these sessions,
00:25:59 when it's every night playoffs, it's fun to kind of switch from underdog to favorite, like
00:26:03 hockey's going to be tough. It's tough to get an inch in the playoffs.
00:26:13 As annoying as you are. I so much, so much love this more than, than what you were last week.
00:26:19 This is great. This is podcasting boys. This feels like old school PMT.
00:26:23 I just imagined Hank, like waking up on every alternate day. It's like, it's us against the
00:26:31 world. And then the next day he wakes up, he's like, fuck all these little pipsqueaks. We're
00:26:34 dominant. Yeah. Blood bath. Um, all right. Last two things I had one, uh, football is back
00:26:42 because we had the official first, first sign of football being back when Schefter tweeted out the
00:26:48 announcement of when the schedules are being announced. Best feeling ever. That's the sign.
00:26:54 That's like the first leaf turning in, in the fall. Schefter has told us that there will be an
00:26:59 announcement coming up. Yeah, but they haven't, they haven't even said when it's going to be
00:27:05 right. No, he said next Wednesday. It's next Wednesday. Next one. We have an exact cause.
00:27:10 Usually, usually there's like a pre-announcement where they say the NFL is getting ready to
00:27:15 announce when the schedule will be released. So it's like a, an announcement for the announcement
00:27:20 for the announcement. Um, but yeah, I'm very, very excited. Cause then you get to print it out.
00:27:23 You get to look at it and you get to count every team is going to win 11 games next year.
00:27:27 It's yesterday. Yeah. Um, and then the last thing we should, we do real quick. We probably have to,
00:27:32 um, Austin rivers went on a McAfee show, uh, and started the debate that I think we have probably
00:27:39 every like two years. Uh, the, he said there's 30 guys in the NBA right now that could play on an
00:27:45 NFL roster and none that could play from the NFL on an NBA roster. Um, I love these debates. They're
00:27:53 my favorite. Uh, I think we can all agree before we even dive into this, that really we should be
00:27:59 focusing on the fact that everyone on the NBA roster, NFL roster could play for the U S men's
00:28:03 national team and win us a world cup. But these debates rock because, uh, we can't really ever
00:28:10 figure it out, but everyone's going to spend an entire afternoon debating it. I I'm very clear on,
00:28:16 on my take, but I want to hear your guys take first, uh, and where it goes.
00:28:20 All right. So my big problem with this debate is that he didn't bring this up in July. Yeah,
00:28:26 this is the exact content that we need in July. And you're way too early. The NBA playoffs are
00:28:30 going on right now. Um, but my take is, well, of course, Austin rivers would think that guys in
00:28:35 the NFL can't play in the NBA because Austin rivers can't even play in the NBA. Correct. And
00:28:40 that's his sport. So I understand where he's coming from on that. I think that NFL players,
00:28:46 there's probably no NFL players that could play in the NBA. There's been one guy,
00:28:50 uh, was Charlie ward won the Heisman trophy. And then he went on to have a very long career
00:28:54 playing in the NBA. That was the one guy that's ever done it. And he was like a very unique case.
00:29:00 Do I need to remind people that people forget that Antonio Gates played college basketball,
00:29:05 that, uh, Jimmy Graham played college basketball. These guys played college basketball. It was a
00:29:10 skill set that translates to the NFL from football. Most of them probably wouldn't want to
00:29:14 get hit. Anthony Davis would probably break his neck putting on a helmet. But for the most part,
00:29:20 you could find some of the bigger guys, more athletic guys, and they could play at least
00:29:25 receiver or tight end. I don't, I don't know if there's 30 of them. I actually, I shouldn't be,
00:29:31 I shouldn't be saying my, I want to hear what Jim Harbaugh has to say about this. I'm sure he's got
00:29:36 an awesome answer. Ready to go. Yeah. What were you going to say, Hank? There would be way more
00:29:41 NFL players that could play NBA than reverse disagree. Insane. If we do this, so if we did
00:29:48 this, so the parameters, because the, the argument changes and people are in the NFL, hold on,
00:29:54 shifted around. But if you do, if the argument is simply, you have to play in, you have to make a
00:30:02 roster tomorrow. So not like, Oh, I get a year to get prepped. There's no way 30 guys from the NBA
00:30:10 could make a roster in the NFL tomorrow. I think maybe one or two could make a roster and I'm
00:30:16 talking like special teams, whatever, like that. I'm not saying they're like a super impactful guy.
00:30:21 There's zero guys on the NFL roster right now who could play on an NBA roster.
00:30:27 That's, that's a semantical argument because it's way easier to get a short-term contract for NFL
00:30:32 team when NBA, like there's only 12 spots. We've got 15, 15,
00:30:38 all the time. But Hank, when we're talking about, by the way, if we're going to include special
00:30:44 teams, I mean, I, Wimby blocking kicks just lined up in the Wimby and chat right down the middle.
00:30:50 Hank, you think that, all right, so what do you want to do? What do you want to do to the
00:30:54 timeframe? You want to do three months? Max Jordan. My lot. I got drafted without ever
00:31:01 playing a down of football. Thank you. Antonio Gates played college basketball, not college.
00:31:07 It's green play college football. Okay. What's that supposed to prove?
00:31:14 But have you ever heard of someone in the NBA getting drafted without ever playing,
00:31:18 like picking up a basketball before it happens in football? Like, like every other year you hear
00:31:24 about someone from the shoot. Okay. Ben Simmons is a great point. Hank, Ben Simmons,
00:31:32 Ben Simmons can't shoot in an NBA game. We've watched Ben Simmons every single summer in an
00:31:40 empty gym, not miss. That's how good NBA players are. They're on a different level in terms of
00:31:46 like they, they, you could get every guy on an NBA roster, put them in an open gym. They will
00:31:51 not miss. They go to a game. They're shooting 40%, 30% Ben Simmons, whatever worse you put an
00:31:57 NFL guy in an open gym. You think he's missing? He's missing. He doesn't have the same skill.
00:32:01 There's skills. Athleticism is a, a, like a wash. NFL guys are getting upset because they're like,
00:32:07 well, you don't think NFL guys are some of the best athletes in the world. I think NFL guys
00:32:11 could probably play more sports than NBA guys in terms of just like, I've seen NBA guys try to
00:32:17 throw a baseball NFL guys. It feels like a lot of NFL guys have played a lot of different sports.
00:32:22 NBA, the height, the, the skill level with dribbling and shooting is on a completely
00:32:29 different level that you can't just be like, Oh yeah, this guy's tall. Oh, Devante Adams is
00:32:33 really awesome. He could play. I feel like it's not even close. Let's think about the difference
00:32:39 though, between the NFL and NBA players, right? Maybe the best NFL basketball player that I know
00:32:45 of right now, big dude, miles Garrett, you know how tall he is? He's six, four, correct? He's six,
00:32:53 four. He would be, he would be like a smaller guard in the NBA. Steph Curry, six, four miles.
00:32:59 Garrett would also foul out in five minutes if he played in an NBA game. And that's not because
00:33:04 miles Garrett, isn't an insane freak of an athlete. He is. It's because these guys like the, their
00:33:10 movement, their steps, the way they, the, the, the, the pump fakes, like all those things that
00:33:15 come into an NBA game, miles Garrett, which is like Chet Holt. Someone's like, Oh, he would be
00:33:19 able to lock down Chet Holmgren. Chet Holmgren would put 30 on him and he would be fouled out
00:33:23 in a second. Now the better question is, are there any NBA players that you think could play defense
00:33:29 in the NFL? Like be able to tackle and do all that shit. Marcus smart. Maybe I could see,
00:33:35 I could sweet Westbrook. I could see Westbrook as like cornerback safety, maybe as a safety.
00:33:42 And he's like the water boy where he, he just imagines the quarterback saying Westbrook to
00:33:46 him before every play. And then he goes fucking nuts. I, the, the, I mean, Tyrese Maxie has NFL
00:33:52 speed. He does. Like, I, I think that the argument gets lost because people think that it's like a
00:33:59 knock on NFL players. It's not NFL players are insane. And I, again, I think the Austin rivers
00:34:04 comment makes no sense because I do not think 30 guys could go and want to take those hits
00:34:09 and like have to deal with the toughness that takes to be in the NFL. It's just the NBA.
00:34:15 I feel like, I don't know if you guys like watching an NBA player just play basketball
00:34:22 with no one around. You just see, you're like, this is just so different than everything else.
00:34:27 It's just so we got a guy in our, in our office, Mark Titus, who is like, he doesn't miss shooting
00:34:33 and he's, you know what I mean? Like, and he didn't play at Ohio state. He played,
00:34:37 I shouldn't say that, but he, there's so many levels to this. Hank, I can't believe you.
00:34:42 You think that, that the NBA players, like I, I can't, I'm actually shocked by your take.
00:34:47 I mean, I was trying to do some, some just statistical analysis with mine based off of
00:34:53 the numbers game, but the numbers game aren't even in your favor. It's harder to make the NBA
00:34:57 than it is the NFL, but there's way more. It's what, again, I don't want to get, I don't want
00:35:03 to get roster shamed here. 52 on the active roster, but that's the reverse your arguments
00:35:08 reverse that you could make an NBA player. There's more chances to make a couple of spots.
00:35:13 Yeah. I guess I didn't really think about the reversal.
00:35:16 I think you were just trying to argue. I like that. That's what I think. Yeah.
00:35:23 I'm going to have to think about it a little more, but I do. I just also feel like there's so many,
00:35:27 so many guys in the NBA are like, you point out the size thing. There's too many, like,
00:35:31 there's too many tall people in the NBA that agreed to not be able to play NFL.
00:35:35 Oh, great. There's a ton of people in the NBA that would be able to play.
00:35:38 That's what we're saying. What are you going to do? We're saying it's very hard to do either one,
00:35:43 but if you had to say which one could have a better chance, it's definitely the NBA translating
00:35:49 to the NFL without a doubt. Hey, name one player in the NFL that you think could play in the NBA.
00:35:55 I saw some Drake May high school highlights.
00:35:58 Cooper Jean. Everyone says the high school highlights. You know how far
00:36:03 being a really good high school basketball player, someone who like DeAndre Hopkins played
00:36:08 basketball at Clemson. There was someone else who he on Coleman, you retweeted Keon Coleman was like,
00:36:15 he was not. He couldn't. I don't know if he wanted to pursue basketball in Michigan State,
00:36:21 but being a good basketball player at Michigan State doesn't mean you're an NBA roster guy.
00:36:26 There's still like a level to that. Hank, that's the face Hank makes when he knows that he's wrong,
00:36:33 but he won't say I'm wrong. No, I mean, you made some good arguments. I'm not going to admit defeat,
00:36:38 but I'm going to do some more research and come back to you on Thursday. Okay. Okay. I want more
00:36:45 research. I just want one player. I want to know one player that you think could do it.
00:36:49 It's also, it's like, it's one of those. Yeah. Like, like Steven Shea tweeted,
00:36:55 Mike Evans dunking. I would have to see Lamar Jackson's jumper, but like.
00:37:00 He's like six to Mike. There was a lot of his fuck and fast Mike Evans dunking
00:37:08 a shot. But I'll say this Hank, Mike Evans said that he loved basketball and like was considering,
00:37:16 and he says that he could, he thought he could play in the NBA. Mike Evans wasn't a top 100
00:37:20 recruit in high school. Like that's he's already, the odds are completely stacked against him.
00:37:25 I think James could do it. He can do anything. And again, I want it very clear. Awesome. River's
00:37:32 an idiot. I do not think there's 30 guys in the NBA who could play in the NFL tomorrow.
00:37:36 I think there's like one or two. There's zero in the NFL who could play in the NBA tomorrow.
00:37:40 That's the whole point. Also borough you, the, uh, do you know who, you know, who I thought of
00:37:47 right away because member, Oh, the avalanche just won. Congrats. The abs getting game one.
00:37:54 Remember Joseph Fourier, the lions tight end who was six, seven, two 50. And he played like two
00:38:00 years for the lions. And all he did was go line package and he would just stand there and he would
00:38:04 catch a touchdown. Like I think his, I think his rookie year, he had 18 catches and seven of them
00:38:08 were touchdowns. You, you do like if Yonnas was in goal line package and you just split them out
00:38:15 wide and you just threw him a jump ball, how does he not, how is that not a touchdown every time?
00:38:20 Yeah. So I'm saying like, like Wimby, just in terms of putting them on an Island and being
00:38:25 like, here, I'm going to throw the ball as high as I can. And no one's going to just put Wimby
00:38:28 back there on hail Marys, right. To just to, you would never get scored on, on a long pass like
00:38:33 that. The size is a real issue because you have to be insanely skilled to play in the NBA. If you're
00:38:39 undersized, if you're like less than six, four, I would say you have to have just out of this world,
00:38:45 next level skills compared to even the greatest basketball players that are currently in the VA
00:38:50 to, to make it happen with a career. So I, I, I don't think it's even like a remotely close
00:38:55 conversation. There's probably, I would say there's maybe, maybe 10. I could see there being
00:39:01 10 guys in the NBA that if you gave them a year to train and if they loved it, that other question
00:39:06 is like, would they like playing football? No, like they might just, they might just be like,
00:39:10 this sucks. Yeah, definitely. Joe Burrow won a high school championship as a freshman
00:39:15 division two Southeast district player of the year, senior year, four year varsity letterman,
00:39:20 great court vision. He would definitely have. Okay. That's the last time he played ball.
00:39:26 Well, I mean, he focused on football, but it's like, if he focused all that energy on basketball,
00:39:30 I'm sure he would have gone pro NBA players. If they focused on, on football, there's probably
00:39:37 like a handful of them that just by their size and athleticism could find a spot. All you have
00:39:43 to do is run. Okay. Here, here, here's, here's Hank. Here's, here's part of the argument.
00:39:48 If you took the measurables of like NBA players and you had them like do all of the combine drills
00:39:56 NFL, there'd be a lot of NFL scouts. It'd be like, kind of like what Max was saying, like,
00:40:01 Oh, that guy's got the raw athleticism. He's a project. We'd take them.
00:40:04 If you take all the NFL players and put them in the NBA combine, you'd have to eliminate almost
00:40:10 70% of them just based on height immediately. Probably more than that, probably more than 70%.
00:40:19 And then you'd watch them shoot and you'd probably get rid of another, like 95% of them.
00:40:25 And then you have Joe burrow and I'll give you Joe burrow just because we love Joe burrow.
00:40:29 But Hank, I would like you to do some more research and maybe look it up. I did like
00:40:33 everyone just falling for the trap where they were like Antonio Gates. It's like, yeah,
00:40:37 he played basketball at Kent state. He was so far away from the NBA and he's a hall of fame tight
00:40:44 end. That's, that's the exact opposite argument that you should be making. Right. Right. Wait,
00:40:49 wait, wait, wait. They were doing that. Antonio Gates is an example that proves the point of why
00:40:54 an NFL player. Yeah. Okay. That's, that's, that's really bad logic. Even for the internet.
00:40:59 Really bad logic. They're like, Oh, Antonio Gates could hoop. It's like, no dude. He was,
00:41:05 he played basketball to his maximum ability and then was like, Oh shit, I'll be a tight end
00:41:11 and be a hall of Famer. Yeah. Yeah. The best ever. I do. I, you're right. We need this to happen.
00:41:17 Probably not the best ever. One of the best ever for that era. We needed this in July, but uh,
00:41:22 this, this would be the perfect, like all star MLB all-star game week conversation to have.
00:41:28 Yeah. So we'll do it again. But yeah, sound off in the comments. Tell us why we're wrong. This
00:41:32 is, these are my favorite hypotheticals because we would never find it out. Um, and also hockey
00:41:36 player, a hockey player could play in the NBA. I loved, I loved hockey players, hockey guys,
00:41:42 chiming in. It was like one out of every 20 tweets being like, try to put any of these guys on
00:41:47 skates. Wouldn't be able to do it. No shit. Oh, also you just, everyone should know that
00:41:57 will Compton is the one who's pushing this hard and his brain doesn't really work.
00:42:02 Wait, we'll Compton saying that NFL players could play. Yeah. He's saying they could dominate. Well,
00:42:07 we'll come to did a very smart thing. He changed the argument. He changed the debate completely
00:42:12 to, uh, who would do better an entire NBA team of NFL players or an entire NFL team of NBA players.
00:42:21 So basically saying, imagine if we had all the NBA players try to block TJ Watt, and then it's
00:42:28 obvious. You're like, okay, that makes no sense. I think both teams would get smoked. If you had
00:42:33 all the NFL players play against the best NBA team, they would get fucking 50 piece.
00:42:38 I want will to dive deeper into this wormhole and to do an NBA team of all the best white NFL
00:42:45 players against an NBA team of all the best black NFL players and which one would win roster
00:42:50 breakdown time. He'll get there. He'll get there. Um, all right, we're going to kick it to ourselves.
00:42:55 We've got two interviews, uh, Kirk Goldsberry, Vern Lundquist. We also have hot sequel thrown
00:43:01 and pardon your take on, uh, back in studio before we kick it to ourselves though. Uh, quick word.
00:43:08 Uh, everyone probably we're PLL guys, uh, the tragedy in Mexico, Calum Robinson, his brother
00:43:14 and his friend, uh, really, really, really sad story. There is a go fund me, uh, for the families.
00:43:20 And can we, I think we can probably pin it to the videos. Um, so if you, you know, if you're a
00:43:25 lacrosse guy, really, really sad. Um, and you know, we, we love the PLL and so anything that you want
00:43:32 to give, we appreciate it. And, uh, Hank, you had anything with that? Yeah, we'll, we'll share all
00:43:37 the links. Absolutely heartbreaking stuff. They're just on a surf trip. Um, Carter, the other guy,
00:43:44 the friend of the Robinson's, he was about to get married. So there's some go funds, go fund me for
00:43:49 the brother one for Carter. We'll, we'll share all the links. Uh, and I'm sure everything,
00:43:53 everything is appreciated. Just a very, very sad story. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Donate if you can
00:43:58 feel like it. Um, it's, it's terrible. They were just, they're trying to have fun. And, uh, I don't,
00:44:04 I think they're still investigating what happened, but it sounds like they caught the people that did
00:44:07 it, which is, I guess that's good news. Um, cause they're off the streets there, but yeah, it's,
00:44:12 it's, it's heartbreaking. And family's over in Australia right now, obviously just in a, uh,
00:44:17 can't be in a good place right now. So if you can help them out, that'd be appreciated. Yeah. We'll
00:44:21 donate to. Yeah. Uh, okay. Let's kick it back to ourselves in studio. Okay. Hot sea, cool throne

00:45:10 Colorado, Henry hot seat, cool throne. My hot seat is Jimmy Butler. Oh, we should talk about Jimmy
00:45:19 J. But old J. But old J. But he culture absolute shambles. Pat Riley did a press conference on the
00:45:28 end of the season. I asked about Jimmy Butler trolling when he wasn't playing. And he said,
00:45:32 if you're not in the court playing, you should keep your mouth shut. Kind of agree with that.
00:45:36 I don't disagree with Pat Riley saying that because you're going up against the Celtics.
00:45:40 And for a guy that's not playing to be like, yeah, you know, we expect to beat him every time
00:45:44 and to be like talking that shit and then not having to be the one that backs it up. I,
00:45:48 I think Pat Riley is probably correct about this. I don't know. I mean, J. But is pretty hardheaded
00:45:53 himself, but he might just be like, yeah, you know what? Pat's right. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe
00:45:59 I'm way off on that. I'm going to disagree. I think J. But we'll probably, cause there's also
00:46:02 the contract thing going on right now where I think J. But is got two years left. Uh, extension
00:46:10 time. Is he bigger than he culture? I also, I saw a tweet from it's it's from one of those like NBA
00:46:16 central, like not a hundred percent legitimate source. NBA central. No, it's, but it's called
00:46:21 number when I thought dream on a ball sack jewelry, man, the dunk central is the, the at,
00:46:28 so it said that the 76ers are the favorites to land Jimmy Butler in a potential trade. Oh,
00:46:34 that's interesting. So can you imagine how good the Sixers would be if they had Jimmy Butler on
00:46:38 them and in bead, man, that'd be a great team. Actually. That's the one sliding doors moment.
00:46:45 Tyree's actually wasn't on that team. So it would be a different team. The J. But had been on the
00:46:49 city J. But if he was on the Sixers the last what, four years, I think they get a title. So yeah,
00:46:55 yeah, probably. So J. But has two years. Uh, the second year is a player option with the heat. So
00:47:00 I, he's definitely in that zone of I'm ready for an extension. Uh, I'm about to be 35. I would like
00:47:08 to get paid a lot more money. Uh, he gets paid a lot of money, but that's how it works. The NBA.
00:47:13 And then Pat Riley has to decide whether he is too big for heat culture. I just,
00:47:19 it has to suck. I, I feel like Jimmy Butler is, uh, such a shit talker, which motivates him and
00:47:25 makes him be a great player. But there has to be a small part of you. That's like when I shit talk
00:47:32 and I'm not playing. And then I watched my boys get their asses kicked. That's gotta suck. But it
00:47:36 might, Jimmy Butler might be the one guy who's like, nah, I'll still shit talk. He'll shit talk
00:47:40 his team for not, for not having the balls to go out there and back up his words. I also love Pat
00:47:45 Riley. Just anytime he gets behind a microphone and roast people, Pat Riley is a cool guy. He's
00:47:49 probably the coolest old guy in America right now. Well, he also, uh, he's like a mob boss. He's a
00:47:55 mob boss and whatever they decide to do with Jimmy Butler, like the heat somehow have just,
00:48:00 other than a couple of years since they drafted D Wade have never really been bad, which is pretty
00:48:07 remarkable. Yeah. They just always, they always find a way to get new guys that are really good
00:48:14 and fit heat culture. So maybe it's just the time has passed. He culture with Jimmy Butler,
00:48:19 no longer a good mayor. I saw a clip from Shaq's podcasts, uh, where he said when he was on the
00:48:24 heat, I think like Jason Williams was late for a practice. Pat Riley told him to get the fuck out.
00:48:28 And then Shaq like spoke up for him. I was like, no, no, like it's, it's cool. Like, you know,
00:48:32 he's just a minute late. He told Shaq to get the fuck out. And then one of the guys in the
00:48:37 locker room that's close to the power, I was like, yeah, you know, here's the U-Haul address. You're
00:48:41 going to be getting boxes soon enough. And then he did, they got a call later in the afternoon,
00:48:45 like you were getting ready, releasing you, trading you or whatever. And he was so mad.
00:48:48 He tried to show back up to the facility in Pat Riley. You had 35 cops there. Like, and they're
00:48:53 like, yeah, we're told you can't come in. That's what I'm saying. Like he, Pat Riley, he knows he
00:48:58 culture and he knows when it's expired. I think the, uh, yeah, for, for the heat in the last,
00:49:03 it feels like 20 years there, their floor has been better than you expect them to be. Correct.
00:49:08 That's as bad as it gets in Miami and three titles. Uh, what five or how many? No,
00:49:13 four or five, three, seven trips, seven trips to the NBA title. Yeah, they did show finals. They
00:49:22 did show, well, they turned off the air conditioning in San Antonio. Yeah. But I mean, they've,
00:49:26 they've been very, they've been a very well run organization under Pat Riley, I would say. So,
00:49:31 so I will side with, if the divorce happens, I'll probably side with Pat Riley just based on the
00:49:36 fact that he's proven time and time again, he can make the heat good. The worst decision they've
00:49:41 made. The only bad decision that I can think of is that they retired Jordan's number. Yeah.
00:49:46 Total cock move. Total cock. Big time cock move. Total cock move. All right. Your cool throne.
00:49:51 Cool. Throwing the Met Gala. Yeah. Met Gala. Do we know what goes on at the Met Gala? We've been
00:49:56 trying to figure this out for seven years, I think. Yeah. No, they just talk about what
00:50:00 happened outside the Met Gala. There's just rich people show up in, uh, there's some theme. What
00:50:05 was the theme this year? Sleeping beauty. Sleeping beauty. Oh, I know. Garden of time.
00:50:10 Garden of time. Oh, that explains Ben Simmons briefcase that had the giant clock on it.
00:50:14 That lit, I thought he was carrying a bomb in there. Yeah. Cool clock.
00:50:17 Want to bring it to school Ahmed? Uh, yeah, the Met Gala is weird. I don't.
00:50:23 Who are your guys' favorite looks? Uh, I liked Ed Sheeran. He looked like he was in dumb and
00:50:29 dumber a little bit. Uh, I liked the guy who was wearing just an umbrella. That's something I would
00:50:35 like to wear. I like you just, you couldn't even see the person underneath it. That's kind of a
00:50:39 fat woman that wore sand. No, I did not see the woman that wore sand. How do you wear sand? I
00:50:44 don't know, but she did. She'd get carried up the stairs cause she like couldn't. By the way,
00:50:49 Oh, loved Lizzo. Lizzo was serving looks last night. Yeah. Did you see her? She looked like
00:50:54 a paper bag. Uh, she did. I was in star Wars. Like I wanted to tip her out. I want to tip her out.
00:50:59 And she looked like a star Wars. If you tipped her out and Porter over, I would think that there'd
00:51:04 be some sort of like cheap gas station liquor that would come out of her. Can I say an idea
00:51:08 that people cannot steal because it's a great idea that someone tweeted at me that we're going to do.
00:51:12 Yes. Uh, so legally no one's allowed to steal this. Who's listening right now. Uh, this is
00:51:18 from Millie goats. He tweeted me last night. I think, and I talked to Dave about it. I think
00:51:23 we're gonna do a bet gala at some point this year where we invite some famous people and we just bet
00:51:28 every single game on the board and we dress up. That'd be pretty good. Right? Good idea. We just
00:51:31 come up with a theme. Uh, I think just betting gambling on sports. Yeah. Uh, let's see the
00:51:41 fried food. That'd be good. Yeah, that's a good one. Good theme. Everyone dresses up blue. French
00:51:46 fry blue. Yeah. Blue. Good. You'd be good at this. Yeah. I'll be a chair. I need to see that. Is this
00:51:52 the lady that dressed up as sand? That doesn't look like sand. That's not sand. That's the hottest
00:51:57 sand I've ever seen. Yeah, I would. Yeah. If that's sand, then, uh, all the skin on my dick is
00:52:03 going. That's some good sand. Great sand. Yeah. Okay. Good. Hot seat. Cool. Throw in Hank. Thanks.
00:52:09 Yeah. Uh, yeah. Hank's really good at taking her hot seat. Cool. Thrones. I did have the Mac gal
00:52:15 as well. I think Hank just sits down. He thinks, I don't think he thinks about what he should say
00:52:18 for hot seat. Cool. Throw in. I think he sits down and ponders. What do you think big cat and PFT
00:52:22 will say? Correct. And then that's what he comes up with. Correct. Uh, so my hot seat is going to be
00:52:26 Giselle. Giselle was not happy with the roast. Yeah. Nor was Aaron Hernandez's, uh, wife. That
00:52:34 was a wild quote by Aaron Hernandez's wife. I like, I feel bad for her in the fact that her life,
00:52:40 you know, the, the, the father of her children and her fiance turned out to be a serial killer
00:52:48 and then killed himself in prison. Probably not the easiest last few years for her, but her
00:52:54 reasoning of, uh, my daughter someday has to watch these jokes and the hero that she thought her dad
00:53:01 was is going to be like pierced. Uh, I feel like the, the murder part would probably be the part
00:53:07 where like that he wasn't a good, just a quick Google search. I'll take care of it. Jokes really
00:53:12 weren't the problem. I think it's the murder that probably like one day she's gonna be like, oh,
00:53:17 he wasn't a great guy. She said, it's sad. I'm trying to raise my children in such a cruel world.
00:53:21 Uh, he murdered murder probably four people. Yeah. That's, that's pretty cruel. That is cruel.
00:53:27 And also she's kind of making the implication that she's really the only one that's harmed
00:53:31 by these jokes. Correct. Like in the entire world. Correct. It's just her. And she's like,
00:53:35 that sucks for me. I'm sure it does suck for her to have to hear people, but also if you're her,
00:53:40 why would you tune into the Tom Brady? Yeah. Also that feels like you're opting into specifically
00:53:45 hearing jokes about your dead husband. And the people I feel bad about, uh, the most would be
00:53:52 the loved ones of the people who are murdered who have to hear the jokes. Yeah. That would probably
00:53:56 be the front of the line of like, oh, that's gotta suck. Yeah. You know, what sucked for
00:54:00 OJ Simpson's children was Norm MacDonald. That was probably when they figured it out. That was
00:54:05 the worst time. But yeah, Giselle's not, she's not happy either. Also she should have been,
00:54:10 she should have been the last person. Should have been there. Yeah. Also great. Who?
00:54:15 Giselle. If Giselle had roasted Tom Brady, it would have been great. Obviously would have been
00:54:20 awkward, but would it have not been great? No. Yes, it would have. I don't think she would have
00:54:26 gone because she just would have just told the truth to him. Yeah. Tell the truth. And that
00:54:31 would have been great. But she, she avoided a major shot when Bert and Tom did the whole like
00:54:36 breakdown of what a bad guy Tom Brady is. And they said, they started talking about her.
00:54:41 They didn't address the fact that she's like a six foot two stunning German model whose family
00:54:48 immigrated to South America in the middle of the century. They really, she does. She avoided a major
00:54:54 shot with that one. Imagine if she had just come, just walked out and been like, Tommy never made
00:54:59 me came or come. No, that would have been better if she said it that way. Yeah. Came. Tommy never
00:55:04 made me came. You never made me came. Boom roasted. See ya. That would have been great.
00:55:08 Yeah. I can't make you come in myself. Come by the way, from the fallout of the Tom Brady,
00:55:13 right? I like that. The, uh, it does feel like Tom Brady was being serious when he said no more craft
00:55:18 jokes. Yes. Yeah. People thought that was maybe fake, but the fact that there was never another
00:55:23 craft joke made it seem real. Which even more respect to Tom. Cause he just let all the other
00:55:27 jokes fly. Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think Nikki Glaser went on Howard Stern and said the only
00:55:31 things that were off limits were craft and, and Tom's kids, which I I'm fine with that. Like
00:55:36 that's, well, maybe not the craft part, but the kids totally fine with that. The craft part,
00:55:40 I feel like he should have, you can make fun of Robert craft. Yeah. You can, that's punching up.
00:55:45 You can make fun of the hand job. She even said in her reason why that she didn't make fun of him
00:55:49 because he, uh, is so old and powerful. Yeah. It's like, those are really exactly who you got
00:55:55 to make fun that you should be making fun of. Correct. Correct. I like the people that are
00:55:59 saying Tom, Tom Brady, like saved comedy. Will Compton by letting people by letting people do
00:56:05 that. I saw some other people. Okay. Yeah. Oh, Taylor. Yeah. Taylor Luan and Will Compton both
00:56:10 agreed we can save comedy. You can say the word gay again. It's okay. Comedy. Yeah. Uh, yeah,
00:56:16 I, uh, that was a great roast. It was a great road. It was very funny. And I'm happy that
00:56:19 Belichick never shook Robert craft's hand. Yeah. Same. Yeah. Uh, my cool throne is Boeing. Boeing's
00:56:27 on the cool throne because another whistleblower died. So this makes two, this makes two in the
00:56:31 last like six months. This guy, he got, uh, some sort of a bacterial infection that it progressed
00:56:38 within like two weeks and he died. And so it's like two out of the 60 or two out of the 50 that
00:56:43 have come forward against Boeing are now dead. So one by one, did he testify or again, I'll just
00:56:48 testify. Uh, I don't know what the schedule was like for his, his testifying, but he was in the
00:56:52 process of being a whistleblower. I think we just need to rebrand whistleblowing. Yeah. Cause right
00:56:59 now you hear whistleblower and you're like ref. It feels, yeah, it feels like a Boeing. There's
00:57:04 something, definitely something going on. Yeah. I would say so for the last like five years,
00:57:09 I'm not suicidal. Neither am I. The planes have been crashing. I did see one guy say he just
00:57:15 tweeted. He was like, Hey Boeing. He added Boeing. He's like my book. He's been talking a lot of
00:57:19 shit about you guys. Yeah. Yeah. Boeing, Boeing is the new Hillary. Yeah. So this is just a heads
00:57:26 up. All right. Uh, my hot seat is Scotty Scheffler cause BGA championship is next week and he still
00:57:35 doesn't have a baby. Interesting. I, we've, we've discussed as many, the baby thing that was not
00:57:40 sky shepherds fault. It was the media's fault for basically forcing him to say he would leave even
00:57:45 though his wife was not even close to being due, but it doesn't apply for PGA championship now.
00:57:53 Like not playing in this week's Wells Fargo, right? I'll be calling on the tour live. Okay.
00:57:57 But the event, right. So, but isn't that, aren't we getting close? We're a week and a half away
00:58:03 and there's no baby. It'd be funny if you said, yeah, you know what? The masters is one thing,
00:58:06 but if she goes into labor during the PGA championship, I can't leave that. That
00:58:10 tournament's too important. It's way too important. Especially after winning the
00:58:13 masters. He's got a, yeah, now he has to, he has to show up to that. Yeah.
00:58:17 Some eggplant parm. I heard Whitney say that some Thai food. That's what does it. Eggplant
00:58:22 parm. Yeah. Step off a curb. That could do it. Yeah. Max said uneven surfaces. Yeah.
00:58:27 What if you just have sex again? Could just do that. Yeah. Um, then you might have twins. Yeah.
00:58:35 That's how it works. Uh, all right. And my cool throne, a story that I don't know why it's not
00:58:41 talked about more, uh, Josh Hart and injuries because this is a tweet from April 7th, uh,
00:58:51 from the reporter, Fred cats from, uh, New York. He does athletic. He said, Josh Hart said when he
00:58:57 took a half court heave to end the second quarter is early April. He felt his wrist click and it
00:59:02 almost clicked back into place. Said he went to Brunson at the half and told him I can shoot
00:59:07 threes. Now this is basically the plot from rookie of the year. Rookie of the year. Exactly. And Josh
00:59:13 Hart has been shooting a lot better from three and he's been scoring a lot more is Josh Hart.
00:59:20 Just like did, did one injury to his wrist make him a superstar? I think it's funny that Josh Hart
00:59:26 was so bad at shooting threes that he got injured and it improved his shot actually. Yeah. Maybe,
00:59:30 maybe Caitlin Clark could learn a lot from Josh Hart, maybe fall off her bike at one point and
00:59:35 fix her mechanics. So Josh Hart is a career 31% or 34% a three point shooter. Um, or no, sorry,
00:59:46 I'm reading that's, that's his field goal percentage. Either way in these playoffs,
00:59:49 he's a career. He's, he's like in the thirties in his, in these playoffs, he's shooting 43% from
00:59:55 three. That's crazy. Yeah. It's not his wrist clicked and he's now can score. Maybe it's also
01:00:01 Tibbs just playing him every single minute of every single game, which I love. He's finally
01:00:05 gotten good enough at basketball where he can shoot a three, but it like, why isn't this being
01:00:09 talked about more? He, Josh Hart is now just a lethal three point shooter because his wrist
01:00:13 clicked. He's got to make sure his wrist doesn't re click. Yeah, that would be bad. But it's also
01:00:17 making me just think about injuring myself until I get good at things. Right. You never know. Every
01:00:22 injury you have might be a blessing in disguise. We should just start breaking our wrists. Hank,
01:00:26 maybe if you slit your Achilles tendon, you'll be able to dunk. You might as well try. If you
01:00:30 get desperate, we'll do it for you. Yeah. Or we tell like November and then I'll start doing the
01:00:34 crack science shit. Crack science. I like that. Just start injuring yourself. Uh, with a Scotty
01:00:39 Shuffler thing that reminded me of Charlotte, the pregnant stingray. Yep. Allegedly. I just
01:00:43 looked her up, bitch still ain't given birth. She was never pregnant. And now people are catching on.
01:00:49 Now the youths are on finally. Now tick tock is all over this shit. Finally, you got all the kids
01:00:54 out there. Question this bitch. Remember we were questioning a long time ago. Yeah. So credit to
01:00:59 us. Uh, Jake, your hot seat, cool throne. Uh, my hot seats myself. I'm going to take accountability
01:01:04 here. Oh yeah. And uh, big time. We talked about it earlier in the show. We talked about the game,
01:01:09 but there was a baby bump that I did not alert you guys on. Yep. Brandon Carlo, the Boston Bruins
01:01:15 had a baby, flew down to South Florida and scored a goal. Yeah. Against your hometown team. Yeah.
01:01:21 And disappointed in myself. Jake, don't beat yourself up. It's not like, uh, he had like
01:01:26 crazy odds to score a goal. 13 to one. Jesus Christ. And it's not like everyone then tweeted
01:01:33 us after being like, did you guys bet it? Did you guys bet it? Did you guys bet it?
01:01:36 So it's at least that didn't happen. It felt personal, Jake. Well, now's a good time to get
01:01:42 redemption and tell you that Rudy go bear just had a baby. Okay. So should we score? Should we
01:01:47 go score a goal? Score a goal. Yeah, no, that was a huge, huge miss. Could have really used that
01:01:53 winter. So I'll pay you guys back. Thank you. Yeah. How? I don't know. I don't know. Yeah,
01:01:59 no, you can't. I need $13,000. You can't. You're never going to be able to pay me back for that
01:02:04 one. Yeah. That one was a butterfly effect. All losses for the next month are kind of on you.
01:02:09 Great. Yeah. My cool throne is, uh, moms. This is a PSA. Get your mom's mother's day this Sunday.
01:02:18 Yes. So just a reminder for literally all the AWS, we have some stuff in the Barstool store.
01:02:23 Just make sure you don't show up empty handed Sunday. It kind of sucks that mother's day
01:02:28 is, uh, the same weekend that we changed the clocks. That's the only thing that sucks. Yeah.
01:02:32 Yeah. Because they get one less hour of love. Yeah. It's too bad. Sorry, moms. One less hour
01:02:37 of sleep. Yup. So really it should be the opposite. It, yeah, it should. We should do,
01:02:41 we should move the clocks back, uh, for mother's day when said we're moving them forward and
01:02:46 father's day. Yeah. What do you think Hank? This sucks. Right. Yeah. I genuinely, yep. That's why
01:02:52 they did the Met gala with the whole time thing. That was actually, he was paid by big
01:02:57 clocks. Yeah. How did he get the invite? That's a good question. I don't know. I think the a-list
01:03:03 of a-listers. I think if he just, he had a lot of time. Yeah. He's a lot of time. He's not like
01:03:09 he's playing basketball. So he's got a lot of time and he probably, that's probably something
01:03:14 you have to agree to months ago. And he was like, Oh, mid, you know, may no problem. Yeah. Got no
01:03:21 problem being there. Yeah. No prior commitments that I can foresee. Okay. So mother's day,
01:03:26 make sure you get your mother's something. Get, get them a free subscription to pardon my take.
01:03:30 We'll make it, we'll make a, uh, a graphic. We'll, we'll, we'll put out a graphic, uh,

01:03:42 this show. I love mom. I love moms. Yeah. Uh, okay. Good job. Hot seat, cool throne, everyone.
01:03:49 Uh, let's get to some interviews. The Vern Lundquist and Kirk Goldsberry PFT before we do
01:03:54 to go to Vern Lundquist. Let's go. Uh, Vern Lundquist is brought to you by our great friends

01:04:46 And now here's Vern Lundquist. Okay. We now welcome on a very,
01:04:51 very, very special guest, an absolute legend of the game. It is Vern Lundquist. He is the voice of
01:04:59 many of our favorite memories in sports. Vern, first of all, thank you so much for joining us.
01:05:06 And the first question I had, maybe the toughest question, you just retired. Can we get you out
01:05:12 of retirement? Because we don't want to lose Vern Lundquist and you calling some of the greatest
01:05:18 moments of our lives. I think it's a little late to call King's X, especially because CBS was so
01:05:27 kind and all of my colleagues were at Augusta two weeks ago. It was a lavish goodbye, which was
01:05:35 deeply appreciated by me. But I've told a couple of other folks, I'm 83 years old. I have a mild
01:05:45 case of COPD. I have a mild case of type two diabetes. I have sleep apnea and I cannot remember
01:05:53 what I had for breakfast. So other than that, I have no issues whatsoever. We can get over those.
01:06:00 Listen, if they just do, if they just have a Vern Lundquist opt-in broadcast, I would opt in every
01:06:07 single time. It's like, Hey, he might, he might not, he might not call it perfectly, but it
01:06:11 doesn't matter. We just want to hear your voice. Well, I appreciate that guys, but I'm going to,
01:06:18 I'm going to sidle off into retirement. My wife and I have been married 42 years. We celebrated
01:06:26 our first anniversary at Augusta in 1983 and we celebrated our 42nd there two weeks ago. So
01:06:35 not only for me, but also for my wife, Nancy, it's a very, very, very special place.
01:06:41 Yeah. And I think you made it more special for everybody else that's been watching it. I don't
01:06:45 know if the chicken or the egg situation, but maybe all those, all those great moments happened
01:06:49 on 16 because Vern was there and his little tree stand looking down and you cut, you made all that
01:06:55 happen. But did you ever think that, uh, that the, the very last thing that we would see at Augusta
01:07:01 is, uh, a picture of Tiger Woods shaking hand with a tree and people saying,
01:07:07 Tiger bidding farewell to the goat Vern Lundquist. And it's just a tree with a hand sticking out of
01:07:11 it. Well, there's another view of that meeting. And, and I understand that, uh, that, uh, Tiger
01:07:20 was on Jimmy Fallon show, uh, last week. I'm not sure when it was, but I've seen video of it. Uh,
01:07:26 and there was great sport made of the fact that he, he seemed to be, I was behind the tree and
01:07:33 there is another, there is another shot of Tiger and me, uh, guys, I had three goals going into
01:07:40 what I knew was going to be my last one. Uh, I wanted to meet Scotty Sheffer. I'd never met him.
01:07:46 I did that. I wanted to say goodbye to Tiger. I was able to do that. And I also wanted to say,
01:07:53 and then to thank Tiger and, and to say goodbye to Jack. And, uh, I was able to do all three. So,
01:08:01 uh, mission accomplished as the older television show used to say.
01:08:05 Yeah. I mean, so it's talking about the master specifically, um, obviously the golfers hit the
01:08:13 shots, but do you, I know you're a humble guy, but have you had a moment where you could step
01:08:17 back and be like my call of some of these iconic moments, specifically the Tiger chip in, like,
01:08:24 that's what elevates a sports moment to something that I, your, your voice is just like bouncing in
01:08:29 my brain when I think about that shot. And, and have you had a moment where you're like,
01:08:34 that's pretty cool that I am, I am so intertwined with some iconic, iconic sports moments.
01:08:38 Yes. Believe me. Uh, and I think as a, as a broadcaster, first of all, I get it. There's
01:08:47 courts commentator or broadcaster or announcer or whatever term you want to use. Uh, yes. Down
01:08:54 distance fact, who has the ball? What's the pitch count? Uh, that's all important, but essentially
01:09:01 we make our living as storytellers. And, and I think your, your purpose in doing this is to give
01:09:09 the viewer or the listener, uh, a reason to care about the outcome. And you do that by narratives
01:09:17 and you do that by telling stories, anecdotal information, both good and bad, uh, positive
01:09:25 and negative of the people involved with the teams involved with it, management involved. And, uh,
01:09:31 that's what draws people into the broadcast. And I think if you can humanize the people
01:09:40 who are appearing on in front, then you've accomplished your job. And more often than not,
01:09:46 uh, I've been blessed. I've, first of all, you go to a sporting event and I've done it now for
01:09:52 61 years. I started here in Austin, which is my hometown. And, uh, uh,
01:09:58 but, but you hope that something memorable breaks out and then you pray to the heavens
01:10:07 that you're capable of adding a commentary that is, is purposeful and, and suitable for the topic.
01:10:16 And I've been blessed in that sense because I've been lucky enough to have those moments break out
01:10:23 and then to find the adequate words more often than not.
01:10:26 Yeah. Yeah. You've done a great job of that. I've also been impressed over the years when you know,
01:10:30 uh, when to let a moment breathe, when to not talk over something important that's happening.
01:10:36 If you want to give the people a sense of the atmosphere and the stadium on the course,
01:10:39 wherever, wherever you happen to be calling it. Um, is that something that you made a conscious
01:10:45 effort to do where you could just understand and feel when, Hey, maybe it's time for me to
01:10:49 take a step back and let the moment speak for itself? I had three mentors, uh, the oldest of
01:10:56 whom I doubt you guys have been made aware of. Uh, he was the voice of the green Bay Packers.
01:11:03 His name was Ray Scott and he passed away 25 years ago, I guess. I was lucky enough to get to know
01:11:10 Ray. Uh, he was, he called him, he was one of the announcers on the first one or two Superbowls,
01:11:17 but here when Bart star and, and boy dollar were the stars of the Packers back in the sixties.
01:11:25 And, uh, uh, here was a typical race. Scott call star dollar touchdown. Well, hell they can see
01:11:35 what's going on. You don't need a whole lot more than that for that moment. Uh, the other was the
01:11:41 late Frank Gleiber, uh, who's long forgotten. And that is a pity, pity, shame. Uh, Frank was a friend
01:11:48 and a mentor of mine. Uh, we lost him at the age of 51. Uh, he died of a heart attack while jogging,
01:11:55 ironically, but he, he was a master of all trades. And he said to me once, uh, Vern, if they ever
01:12:02 ask you to do anything, they being network sports, and I've worked for ABC, CBS, and TNT for a short
01:12:09 time. If they ever ask you to do anything, say yes. And then watch videotape of other guys who've
01:12:17 done it, whom you think do it well and, uh, and borrow liberally. And so I've done that. And then
01:12:25 the third was Pat Summerall. That was, I was lucky enough to work with Pat for 25 years. He was the
01:12:32 best I've ever seen in counter punch. He, you know, he made magic with John Madden for so many years
01:12:38 and he had assurance in his own craft, allowed John to wander all over the place. And the guy
01:12:47 from the truck, uh, Bob Stenner, producer, uh, Sandy, uh, having a senior moment here, uh,
01:12:55 Sandy Grossman, his director, they would, John was the great, greatest one I've ever seen that
01:13:01 mastering the new show. And he could make something out of nothing, but Pat always had
01:13:07 the perfect counter punch to bring, you know, it's third and eight.
01:13:13 Something John get back to the business. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And Pat was a minimalist too.
01:13:19 So those three guys I tried to emulate over the course of my career.
01:13:24 Yeah. All right. I got a dumb question for you. Uh, you have an all time great big game voice
01:13:30 and it might be a chicken and egg thing, but I do think your voice is phenomenal. And when you
01:13:34 listen to a Vern Lundquist game, it feels like a big game. When did you know in your life that you
01:13:40 had that voice? Was there a moment where you're like, Oh, I got something special here. Yeah.
01:13:45 I, I, I'm, I'm a genetic product. Uh, my dad, the Lutheran minister and, uh, uh, he died 25 years
01:13:55 ago, but, but, but my dad had a great voice. And fortunately I was born in the Midwest. We, we,
01:14:03 in Duluth, Minnesota, we lived there for two years. Then we moved for, he was a senior. He,
01:14:09 I was born when he was a student pastor. Uh, and then he enrolled in the Lutheran school of theology
01:14:16 in Rock Isle, Illinois. And that, my first memories were there, but I'm the oldest of five.
01:14:21 And, and his first church was in Everett, Washington. We then moved to Austin, Texas,
01:14:28 when I was 12. And then my dad and mom moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where they both passed away.
01:14:34 But I'm the oldest of five and I'm the only one of the five who didn't get that, that Texas accent.
01:14:42 I mean, my brother, it takes him two, two minutes to say, yes, sir. I mean,
01:14:47 God can be drawn it out. And, and fortunately I've got a Midwest accent, which I think is desirable
01:14:56 as sports commentary. Uh, you don't want to offend, uh, the middle of the country and you
01:15:01 don't want to draw attention. You know, you don't want to sound like you came from Boston or Brooklyn
01:15:06 either. Uh, and it would be super cool and pretend like he came from LA. Um, so, but, but I, I, I,
01:15:15 I'm the genetic beneficiary of my dad and the laugh is the same thing. He had this huge laugh
01:15:21 and I, I've inherited that. So times it's, I laugh at inappropriate moments, but that's,
01:15:28 that's okay. That's who I am. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Is there, is there any moment because I, we,
01:15:33 we broadcast for a living, we do this show and sometimes five minutes after we're done,
01:15:38 we're done, I might be getting in my car. I'm like, Oh, I should have said this. I remember it.
01:15:43 Is there, is there any call that you've had where you're leaving the stadium and you think to
01:15:47 yourself, I wish I had changed that just a little bit and said this instead of that?
01:15:53 Well, I've made mistakes and those are the ones you regret. I mean, I'll never forget. I was doing
01:15:58 a Buffalo bills broadcast and they had a number 86 and a number 89. And when they were going from
01:16:08 the television commentary booth, they were going right to left so I could see the eight,
01:16:12 but I couldn't see the six or the nine. And I, I had the wrong number. And it was like an 80 yard
01:16:20 touchdown pass. And I felt like an absolute fool when they took a closeup of the guy and I had the
01:16:26 wrong call. Jake Reed was one of them who was involved. But when, when you, and, and when I
01:16:34 was doing the sec for all those years, so help me God, I'd make mistakes of identification. And
01:16:40 that's when you feel dreadful and you're not doing the job for which you were hired. And
01:16:48 we all make them. It's live. It's a live telecast, but you want to be prepared to God,
01:16:55 you feel awful when that happens. Just awful. And it stays with you for a couple of days.
01:17:00 Well, I would say that you, you've had a lot more, uh, iconic moments in one of them being in the sec,
01:17:06 uh, the kick six. So after that happens, how, how long were you like buzzing off of that? Because
01:17:12 it was such an incredible moment and your call was so perfect for it. Where, I mean,
01:17:16 you must've been on cloud nine having a moment like that happen in front of you.
01:17:19 Yeah, I was, uh, I was two weeks before that we had done Auburn and Georgia and, uh, and, uh,
01:17:28 Auburn and my partner was Gary Danielson and, and, uh, Auburn had the lead and, and no,
01:17:35 Georgia had the lead and Auburn had a fourth down in 18 at their own 25 yard line. And the
01:17:42 quarterback guy named Nick Marshall. So the, through the ultimate hail Mary and the two, uh,
01:17:49 Georgia guys went up and said, it was fourth and 18 for crying out loud, not the ball down,
01:17:55 but they both tried to intercept it. They tip, they bumped into each other, tipped it. It went
01:18:01 forward. A wide receiver named Ricardo Lewis reached behind him, grabbed it in for the touchdown.
01:18:07 So we, we get on camera at the end of the game and Gary says, it's the greatest finish in college
01:18:14 football you've ever seen. You will never, ever, ever see anything like that. Two weeks,
01:18:21 yeah. Two weeks. We had Chris Davis with the, with the miss kick and, and Gary, we, we, you know,
01:18:34 the Auburn guys made a substitution during a long time now. And, and, uh, and we all thought it was,
01:18:42 first of all, Matt Austin was a referee. He's a good friend. We, we bonded over it,
01:18:46 over that game as a matter of fact. And, and, uh, Matt is the guy who they, they took him seven
01:18:53 minutes to determine if you remember this in 2013, so 11 years ago, if TJ yelled in his foot had come
01:19:02 down with time out or time remaining and it took him seven minutes and they were asking the truck
01:19:09 to synchronize this main game coverage with the end zone and get them. And it took seven minutes.
01:19:16 And then Matt Austin came on, please put one second back on the clock. And they did. Well,
01:19:23 we all thought that, uh, Nick, Nick was irritated to put it mildly with the senior place kicker.
01:19:31 We, so they put this red shirt freshman kid on the field for 57 yard field goal. And he had a
01:19:39 pretty good kick. He really did. But, but Chris Davis grabbed it and got a block, got another
01:19:46 block. And all of a sudden about the 50 yard line, I thought, Holy cow, he's, there's nobody in front
01:19:52 of it. And then, uh, when he got to about, when he got to the end zone, I look back and I said,
01:20:00 there are no flags. And then that moment comes through your body and you think, dear God,
01:20:07 don't let there be any flags. Right, right, right. Cause yeah, there were, yeah. Cause we're
01:20:13 watching at home and we're thinking, you always think of a big play like that. You're like, all
01:20:17 right, give it a beat because you never know. You're looking for that. Alabama fans are probably
01:20:22 like, there has to be a flag here. You're just staring at the bottom line of their TV for 30
01:20:26 seconds after that plays over hoping that yellow icon. But you added that that line adds to the
01:20:31 moment so much. Yeah. Well, and, and Gary, we, we only showed three replays. I was stunned.
01:20:39 Um, our, our director was Steve Milton who still does, uh, college football and he does all of our
01:20:45 golf. Uh, and Steve's one of the most brilliant directors everywhere ever. And then Gary and I
01:20:52 laid out during the replay for a minute and 21 seconds, which is an attorney for you if you're
01:20:57 a talking dog and uh, uh, the late Don Drysdale gave me that nickname 50 years ago. Uh, one quick
01:21:09 end of the day, just face the fact you and me ain't nothing but talking dogs. That's great.
01:21:14 So after it happened, did you tell Gary Danielson, you're like, Hey, remember two weeks ago when you
01:21:20 said you'll never see anything like this? Oh yeah. Well, but he had a great line. He had the great
01:21:25 line because in the analysis of the replay, he said, well, no wonder they couldn't tackle it.
01:21:33 They had their field goal protection team on the field. Those are nothing but fat guys. Yeah.
01:21:40 It's a fact. Yeah. It really was. Yeah. Uh, what's the most fun name to say in sports?
01:21:49 Oh, I've got one. Uh, and I don't mean to make fun of a guy, but inevitably that mentioning
01:21:57 a play for LSU and I collect names. I mean, I, I'm, I'm a big aficionado of why people are named
01:22:05 what they are. Barcubias mingo. Yeah. That's a fun one to say. That's a great one.
01:22:12 Then it is, it's, it just rolls off to the bar. Cubias mingo. And I, he was, I think he was a
01:22:18 linebacker 20 years ago at LSU, but that was, that was one of my favorites. Yeah. So, so speaking of
01:22:26 names, when did you, so your, your first name is Merton. When did you decide to make the switch?
01:22:31 Thank you for bringing that up. Well, Vern is so proud. I mean, again, it might just be because
01:22:37 we've known you for so long watching, but when, when was that switch made? It was a great switch
01:22:42 by you. I want to say that right now. Fantastic. My full name is Merton Laverne Lundquist junior.
01:22:53 The junior is important. Yep. My siblings, David, Dan, Tom, Sharon.
01:23:02 What the hell? So your parents, your parents just took a shot. They're like, Hey,
01:23:07 there's our first kid. Let's just take a shot here. My dad went by Merton. They tagged me with
01:23:13 Laverne. So I went through high school, college, and, and I, as a man of unclear purpose, I had
01:23:21 no idea what I've got a good degree in sociology and a minor in history from Texas Lutheran
01:23:26 University, graduated in 62. I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I thought, well, I grew up in a
01:23:33 minister's home and with a sociology degree, a liberal arts background, I think I'll try this.
01:23:40 So I decided to enroll for one year at the Lutheran school of theology in Rock Island.
01:23:46 And six weeks in, I knew it was not for me. And, and I, you know, but I, I, I, I swore to myself,
01:23:54 you're going to make it through one year. So I do have 18 hours of credit at the Lutheran school
01:24:00 of theology in Rock Island, including six hours of Greek, which has not been particularly beneficial
01:24:08 in this career. But along the way, I got a radio job as a nighttime disc jockey across the
01:24:16 Mississippi river in Davenport, Iowa at WOC radio, which stands by the way for world of chiropractic.
01:24:25 And the guy who hired me was a program director was a guy named Bob Gifford. And, and we did the
01:24:31 interview and he said, I like your work. I want to put you on from nine to midnight,
01:24:36 but there's no way in God's green earth. You're going on my radio station as Laverne.
01:24:41 So the compromise was to drop the LMA off. And, and I've been burned since I was 23 years old.
01:24:51 So 60 years now, but to this day, Nancy and I are blessed. We have a home, a condo here in Austin,
01:25:00 but we are full-time home is in steamboat Springs, Colorado. And if, if someone calls
01:25:07 and they asked for Laverne, Nance will pick up the phone. She said, honey, it's someone either
01:25:12 from Austin, higher Texas wizard. Cause that's how they knew me. Yeah.
01:25:18 That's funny. You brought up your wife. We have to ask you to tell the story of how you met.
01:25:22 Yeah. Mr. Steal your girl. So we've heard about it,
01:25:26 but we'd like you to tell the story. We want to hear it from Vern.
01:25:29 Well, okay. Uh, uh, we met in 1980 and, and, uh, and, and Dallas, uh, I was recently divorced.
01:25:43 Nancy had been divorced about seven, eight years, I think at that point. And, uh, I'll give you the
01:25:50 full story. We got a little bit of time. Yeah. Uh, so as a recently divorced and I lived in what
01:25:57 is called the mid cities. I was working at the ABC affiliate Dallas and, uh, doing the six and 10.
01:26:04 And I also had the cowboy job at the time. And, and, uh, I lived 23 miles from downtown Dallas
01:26:12 and I didn't want to go home. I was lonely. So I went to this upscale discotheque that,
01:26:18 that dates it. Uh, this would have been a week before Nancy and I met. So early March of 1980
01:26:25 and a young man, I walked in and had a Scotch and water sitting at the bar and a young kid came over
01:26:30 and said, Mr. Lundquist, I don't mean to be presumptuous, but what are you doing in here?
01:26:35 And I said, what are you talking about? He said, look out there on the dance floor. Do you see
01:26:40 anybody your age? And I said, good point by you. Where, where would you suggest I go? He said about
01:26:50 a mile and a half down Greenville Avenue. There's an upscale bar called Arthur's it's attached to a
01:26:56 steakhouse. Uh, I think you might find people your age. I was 40 at the time and you might find
01:27:04 people more of your generation. So the next week I got off the 10 o'clock news and I thought, well,
01:27:09 I'll take that kid's advice. So I walked into this upscale, it was an upscale bar and, uh,
01:27:16 I was just coat and tie because I just come from work and, and Nancy who became my wife was sitting
01:27:23 at the, at the bar with her date of blind date. I didn't know that at the time, who was the Coors
01:27:29 beer distributor in Dallas and Fort Worth. I, all this, I found that later. So he recognized me from
01:27:36 local television. It's a phenomenon. And, and he said, well, there's Vern, let's invite him over
01:27:42 for a drink. So he did. And I joined him and I looked down at Nancy and she had the prettiest
01:27:48 smile of anybody I've ever seen in my life. She still does. And, and, uh, so this Raymond, he said,
01:27:56 I know you recently divorced. I don't want to take proprietorship over your life, but I don't want you
01:28:00 hanging around single. He said, I got a school teacher. This was a Tuesday night. Can you make
01:28:07 time between the six and 10? And yeah, cause all I do is update scores and rewrite some copy.
01:28:13 Okay. Let's go to dinner and I've got a date, but the school teacher lined up.
01:28:19 He looked at Nancy and he said, what are you doing Thursday night? She said, nothing.
01:28:24 He said, okay, we're going to double date four of us. And we've paid, picked out a restaurant.
01:28:30 And so in the meantime, I kept looking at her thinking, gosh, she's beautiful. And he finally
01:28:35 had to take care of business. So he went to the men's room and I asked her to dance and I had,
01:28:42 I had five minutes at most I knew. So, so we're out in the dance floor and I said,
01:28:47 how involved are you with Raymond? She said, first day, it's a blind date. And I said, well, good,
01:28:53 then forget what he's talking about for Thursday night. What are you doing Saturday night?
01:28:59 And she said, I think I'm doing whatever you're doing.
01:29:04 So good.
01:29:05 We had our first date in March 22nd, 1980. And because we had been both married before we took
01:29:18 our time. We, we did. We, we waited a couple of years and got married in 82. And she's, she's,
01:29:26 she's charming. Yeah. She was impressed with your dancing. Yeah. Wait. So did you go on the double
01:29:31 date or no, did you, did you cancel the double date? No, I know I called and canceled, you know,
01:29:36 I said, I'm really, we got late, late breaking scores here. Right.
01:29:41 Oh, that's, I mean, listen, if you're, if you're the, the course distributor and you,
01:29:49 uh, lose out on your date to Vern Lundquist, there's worse, there's worse fates out there.
01:29:54 There's another part to that, honest to God. So, and, and there was a third guy there
01:30:00 who is Raymond Willie stockbroker, a fellow named Paul Bass. And so Nancy had given me her telephone
01:30:09 number and, and I, you know, I had nothing to write it down with. So I can, I still remember
01:30:14 she said, just imagine a dial tone, three, six, one, nine, one, eight, nine. And so I'm thinking
01:30:21 three, six, one. So now I'm, I'm driving a company issued red Chevrolet. And I was a heavy smoker
01:30:31 back in those days. And there were cigarette burns all over the dead, them, the no guide.
01:30:36 And Raymond pulls up in a silver Rolls Royce. And I thought the competition has suddenly gotten
01:30:43 stiffer than I thought it was going to, but, uh, that was a Thursday night. And, and on Friday,
01:30:54 I kept crying. She was, she did radio television commercials in Dallas. She was quite successful
01:30:59 for a number of years. And, and, uh, she, but she had a sideline job as a, as a receptionist
01:31:07 in between auditions at a place called the company. And I kept calling, I called her and
01:31:12 Nancy's out another audition. I called it noon. I called it two, I called it four.
01:31:17 And I said, the five o'clock, I know she's there. So they said, okay, she just walked in. They put
01:31:23 me through Nancy got on the phone and said, uh, I said, well, why have you not taken my phone call?
01:31:30 She said, listen, I don't want to come between you and your friend. I said, who was my friend?
01:31:36 She said, Raymond. I said, I just met him. I don't know Raymond. Oh, okay. Well, in that case,
01:31:44 we'll go out for a date. Oh, I love that. We have a friend, Paul Bissonette that could,
01:31:48 he could take some tips from you about how to handle a situation like that. Oh,
01:31:52 that's such a great story. Yeah. That's such a great story. Uh, in terms of, so we talked about
01:31:58 the kick six, obviously tigers, uh, chip, did you in your life, was that something that you would
01:32:04 say like generally, and you had that, or was it a spur of the moment, uh, for that ship?
01:32:10 It was absolutely spur of the moment. You've got to be reacting. You've got to be re you've got to,
01:32:16 you, you two rules. You cannot predetermine what you're going to say. And there are guys who have
01:32:24 done that no names, but there are guys and you can tell they force it in. Oh my God. But you,
01:32:31 you just got to react to the moment. So I said what I did because in my life, I'd never seen
01:32:39 anything like that. And I assume people at home hadn't seen anything like that. And that's what
01:32:43 I said. Why I said what I did. Uh, there's a little bit of background about the way that shot
01:32:51 would cover. And I'd love to share it with you because I want this to get full credit, uh, the
01:32:57 front of a production truck as the producer to the far left, there are three seats, producer,
01:33:04 far left, he's editorial comment. He's the guy with whom we communicate director in the middle.
01:33:10 In this case, it was Steve Milton and Steve. And then to his right is the technical director.
01:33:17 So, and Steve's looking at a monitor back then there were 54 monitors in front of him.
01:33:23 And he's the guy who says, and this is not hypothetical. This is actually the guy next
01:33:28 to me, the camera guy was a guy named Bob Wishney from Philadelphia. He's retired now
01:33:33 and he was camera 10. So when Tiger lined up for the chip shot, uh, first of all,
01:33:40 Lanny Watkins was in tower and Tigers fellow competitor at the time playing board. And now
01:33:47 with Chris DeMarco and Chris was 20 people of the whole. And so I asked Lanny, what he thought,
01:33:54 and Lanny said, he's going to be lucky if he can keep his inside DeMarco's ball. It was that severe
01:34:00 the slope down. And so that, that was the background. Now, Steve Milton says camera 10,
01:34:07 ready 10, take 10 and Norm Patterson, the technical director, then pushes a button.
01:34:12 That's camera 10. That's what you see in your living room. So ready 10, take 10. He takes 10.
01:34:19 That's Wishney and Tiger hits the chip and Bob zooms in and has a perfect, perfect shot of the
01:34:28 ball and stays in focus the whole way. Now it starts down. And when it gets near the lip of the
01:34:34 cup, uh, Steve said, ready six, take six. Well, six is over here. Uh, he's got a flanker shot.
01:34:43 He's got a shot of Tiger for reaction here to here. Well, Norm Patterson followed his instincts
01:34:49 and he, he intuitively did not take six. He stayed with 10 and because he made that decision,
01:35:00 we all saw the ball drop. Had he followed the director's command, really not, not an advice.
01:35:09 Had he followed it, you would have seen the reaction shot Tiger. You would have,
01:35:14 we'd have played it back. But if you think about it, it changes everything. Everything about it.
01:35:19 I'll remember that shot. And then now here's the sad part of it. Uh, Norm, that was in April,
01:35:27 of course, in 05, the following January, uh, they were our first event of the year was San Diego,
01:35:34 in San, La Jolla, San Diego. And, uh, Norm was out jogging and dropped into a heart attack at
01:35:41 41 years of age. And he was Cincinnati. Uh, Steve Milton went back to Cincinnati to eulogize Norm.
01:35:51 And he told that story so that Norm's family and friends would know that it was his Norm's decision
01:36:00 that created what we all remember about Tiger for ship shot. Yeah. You know, that was what
01:36:07 05, 19 years ago. Holy cow. But I mean, it's, it's a great story because it shows just how much
01:36:15 goes into having these moments that for us as, as, as the viewers, they just go across seamlessly
01:36:21 and they happen. And you're like, Oh my God, this just happened. It's incredible. And every decision
01:36:26 that comes in and all the pieces that go together for a puzzle to make a perfect moment. I mean,
01:36:31 first of all, no one would, no one would manufacture something. They're going to say
01:36:36 but you just got to react to what's going on. You really, it's a reactionary business. So,
01:36:44 so to speak. Yeah. Yeah. And you've seen so much sports. Like you said, I think I saw a clip of
01:36:49 you covering the Texas Rangers in their first season back in spring training. You had some
01:36:54 bell bottoms on, you had a nice flow going, looking good, like a disco shirt. It was, uh,
01:37:00 it really was an air. There's no shame in the internet. No, no, it's, it's forever. So you've
01:37:06 seen that clip. Holy cow. And you've seen so much sports throughout the years. I just, I, I, I'd like
01:37:12 to hear from your perspective. What is, what's changed so much? Like what are the most important
01:37:18 changes either for the better or for the worse in terms of college professional sports that you've
01:37:23 seen since the 1970s to this day where they're, you know, multi-billion dollar industries. What's
01:37:30 changed over the years? Well, the, the two biggest changes, both of which helped drive Nick Saban
01:37:36 into retirement or travel to Portland NIL. Uh, you know, uh, I mean these kids now, how much
01:37:44 are you going to pay me? Or if you don't pay me, if you don't guarantee I'm starting and pay me,
01:37:50 I'm transferred, I'm going to central Michigan. Uh, and, and Nick, I don't know that I think Nick
01:37:58 has now said, Oh yeah, that drove me nuts. Uh, I'm, I'm pretty good friends with him. Uh,
01:38:06 you know, you do that many Alabama games over the years and, and, uh, we, we became, I would say
01:38:14 we're, we're friends. I know, I know we are. And then, then having said that, then you worry about
01:38:21 does that impede on any prejudicial comments you might make? I hope not. I think I'm
01:38:28 a better broadcaster than that, but I worry about that because I admire him. I, and I know
01:38:37 Nick, Nick is one of my favorites and, and I used to, I used to jump up and down. He'd get
01:38:46 on the local reporters at those press conferences and just belittle them. And I thought, Nick,
01:38:52 you're better than that. And, and unfortunately in many cases he will, but yeah, he had, he had
01:39:00 a handler, a system SID who's now at Arkansas state athlete director, but I asked the SID,
01:39:08 I said, Oh, to Nick, I said, Nick, you know, they're just trying to do a job. Yes. Sometimes
01:39:13 they ask stupid questions, but they're young. And, and the SID said, well, he belittles them
01:39:22 because they deserve it. And I thought, Oh, nah, you know I haven't talked to Nick since he retired.
01:39:32 By the way, I thought he was a superstar during the draft.
01:39:37 Yeah, he was fantastic. He was natural on TV. Fantastic. All right. So Vern,
01:39:42 I got a couple of last questions. One is the, so you had these iconic calls, so many, I mean,
01:39:49 Christian Laitner shot, like, doesn't he, you know what I mean? Like that's, that's one of,
01:39:53 that's probably a top three March madness moment, but what is the call that you maybe isn't the most
01:40:00 memorable in terms of the significance in the sports, but you're like, that was the call.
01:40:05 I absolutely nailed. I would say two of them. Oh, I, I did a talk show after the Laitner shot,
01:40:12 once with a guy named Stake Shapiro in Atlanta. And he said, are you really proud of that Laitner
01:40:21 call? And I said, no, I'm not. I just channeled my inner Marvin Albert, you know? And when I went
01:40:28 in, I went, yes. Not exactly evocative and brilliant commentary. But again, it was a reaction.
01:40:38 I get asked a lot about that because I've been so lucky over the years.
01:40:43 And, and I mean, how do you separate Jack in '86 and, and Tiger in '05?
01:40:52 Yeah.
01:40:53 And, and how lucky am I to have those two guys associated with my resume? You, you, you just,
01:41:01 I mean, that's rarefied air and I know that. And as I said, at Augusta two weeks ago, I got to say
01:41:09 goodbye to Jack and Tiger and meet Scotty. So mission accomplished on all three counts. But
01:41:16 Jack, Jack is six months older than I am. A fact of which I never let him forget.
01:41:24 Whenever I can bring it up. But, but we, we did have a moment, Jack and Barbara, Nancy and me,
01:41:33 on Tuesday at the Week at Augusta, we bumped into the two of them on the sidewalk outside the
01:41:40 trophy room at the clubhouse. And Jack said, let's have a little fun. It was his idea. And,
01:41:48 and so he, someone had a cell phone camera and Jack said on the count of three, three, two, one.
01:41:55 And then we simultaneously punched the air and yelled, yes, sir.
01:41:59 That was going to the grave with me. I mean, that was, so, you know, Tiger shaking hands with the
01:42:08 tree and Jack yelling, yes, sir, simultaneously with me. That all of that made that, that week.
01:42:21 Oh, and the other part of it is I've had two really serious back surgeries.
01:42:25 One in 17 and one in 19. I have degenerative scoliosis. So for the last three or four years,
01:42:33 I had done the 16th and the 6th from the content center. We would call it a compound,
01:42:40 but they want to call it the content center. So that's what it is. But I was in the room
01:42:45 and calling it off the monitor, but I swore to my boss, Sean McManus and to our producer,
01:42:53 in this case, Selder Shy, I want to be on the course for the last Saturday and Sunday.
01:43:00 So they accommodated that the main tower was 20 steps behind the green too much with a guy with a
01:43:09 bad back. But there's a flanker tower and that's where I was. It was only six steps up and it was
01:43:16 crowded up there. It was myself and Tracy Levine, a wonderful lady who is my statistician slash
01:43:21 spotter and a camera guy. But I got up there and it was just like such a relief, emotional relief
01:43:32 for me to finish out 40 years in a tower at the 16th hole. Yeah. It's phenomenal.
01:43:40 Yeah. And then Jim was more than gracious in his saying goodbye.
01:43:48 We talked about those two iconic calls. I'll give you another one. Who the hell is Happy Gilmore?
01:43:53 Love that one. The gift that keeps on giving.
01:43:59 Yes. Okay. So there's a background story there. That movie is now released in 1996.
01:44:08 I shot all the scenes in which I was involved in one day in Vancouver, British Columbia.
01:44:17 They had shot all the outdoor scenes, all the golf scenes at Whistler, north of Vancouver.
01:44:26 But for the scenes where I was involved, they had rented a vacant hospital building and Adam Sandler
01:44:33 was there. And so the morning of the shoot, we're gathered at 7am and there's this good looking guy
01:44:41 in the periphery of the circle. The director of the movie is the guy Dennis Dugan who played the
01:44:46 PGA commissioner. So there's an actor and a director. And he said, I got an idea. Let's have
01:44:52 an inside joke. And he looked at this tall, good looking guy. His name was Jack Giaraputo. He said,
01:44:58 Jack, go over to hair and makeup, get a blue blazer and a red tie or whatever it was. And I want you
01:45:06 to sit next to Vern for every scene. And it's just a sight gag. You're not allowed to say a word
01:45:13 because you do not belong to the Screen Actors Guild. So that's Jack sitting next to me just
01:45:22 nodding and it's to him, I say, who the hell is Happy Gilmore? And he was Adam Sandler's roommate
01:45:32 at New York University's film school. And he's now if you watch these Sandler movies,
01:45:39 he's the executive producer of same. Yeah. But and I've got a picture back in Colorado of my
01:45:47 that whole group, Sandler and Jack and Dennis Dugan and the shaggy haired caddy.
01:45:52 I don't think Shooter McGavin is in it. I don't remember. But it's the most damn movie ever,
01:46:00 ever made, but wildly popular. Yeah. A great, great, great movie. All right. So I have one
01:46:07 last question. This has been so much fun. Last question. Roback question. RHOBACK.com promo code
01:46:13 take 20 percent off your first purchase. Q-Zips, polos, hoodies, joggers, shorts. Not to be fan
01:46:20 boys for a second, but is there any way my last question, is there any way you can say welcome
01:46:26 to part of my take? Yes, sir. That would be great for us. We just I just will play it for our
01:46:31 personal files or maybe welcome to part of my take. This is Vern Lundquist. Yes, sir.
01:46:36 Welcome to part of my take. I'm Vern Lundquist. Yes, sir. That's good. That's it. That's perfect.
01:46:44 Can we get you to say who the hell is Henry Lockwood?
01:46:46 That's our producer. He's he's a golfer. He's terrible.
01:46:52 I could get him a golf cart with him. And I was not a good either.
01:46:57 I could talk about it, but I couldn't do it. Yeah.
01:47:03 Who the hell is Henry Lockwood? I like it.
01:47:08 Vern, thank you so much. This has been so much so great for us. We really are so appreciative of
01:47:15 your time and best of luck in retirement, but also maybe come out of retirement. Yeah. Yeah.
01:47:20 You never know. Yeah. You never know. Do you? Yeah. Let's let's let's leave it open.
01:47:27 Okay, guys. All right. All right. See you. Bye-bye.

01:48:50 So it's also perfect that you're here in this specific moment in the NBA playoffs because
01:48:56 it feels like the pendulum has swung all the way back around and Jokic sucks again.
01:49:03 I thought you were going to say defense matters again. No. No. Jokic is getting...
01:49:08 Yeah. He's getting barbed. Your take on Jokic from a couple years ago saying that he
01:49:12 lacks some traits defensively that you'd like to have. I don't actually think he sucks. No. Everyone
01:49:18 knows that's true. But you did have that piece that got Michael Malone very upset. And now we're
01:49:24 watching the Nuggets struggle mightily both offensively but defensively as well where Jokic
01:49:30 is just flailing around. They're putting him and Jamal Murray in pick and roll and just...
01:49:34 I think I saw they had a pick and roll in game one where they were averaging two points per
01:49:39 every pick and roll against those two. That's insane. Yeah. They're shredding them. And I think
01:49:45 the Lakers scored 57 points per game in the paint alone in that series. That was a little bit of a
01:49:50 red flag. And I went on with our friend Ryan Russillo and was like, "Yeah. The reason Minnesota
01:49:54 might do this is they're young and athletic and aggressive and ferocious." And Nikoli Jokic is the
01:50:02 best offensive center in the world and it's not close. But compared to some of the other elite
01:50:06 big men, he is not a great rim protector and not as athletic as some of those other guys.
01:50:12 And we've seen that exposed. Last year, they pieced it together well enough to win and hand
01:50:17 up as you guys like to say. I was wrong. But if there's a weakness in this dude's bag, it's on
01:50:22 that end of the floor and Minnesota's exposed it. But the biggest point of this game, game one,
01:50:29 is Denver scored 80 points. Yeah. Minnesota's defense has been out of this world good and
01:50:35 it's a credit to their roster building. It feels like every single guy, maybe outside of Mike
01:50:41 Conley, is just bigger than everyone else. It reminds me, and you guys like when I put
01:50:47 things in NFL terms, that this is the 2000 Ravens through these first six.
01:50:51 I like that. I like that.
01:50:52 I like that. Huh? Who's killed the guy?
01:50:55 Stay tuned, stay tuned. But they scored 80 points last night. And if you would have told me three
01:51:01 weeks ago that the Denver Nuggets were going to score 80 points in a playoff game, I would have
01:51:05 said, "Oh, did Jokic and Murray both get hurt?" Because that number is just something from the
01:51:09 1980s or 90s in the NBA. And the other crazy thing about that 80 point night, Big Cat, is
01:51:16 Rudy Gobert didn't play. Right. Yeah.
01:51:18 Right. And so they're not just a one-man defensive juggernaut. The whole team is absolutely loving
01:51:25 playing defense and they're shutting down this team that won it all last year.
01:51:29 It's crazy. Yeah, it is. The first half was especially atrocious last night,
01:51:33 watching the Nuggets just struggle. It seems like... How many steals did they have?
01:51:37 I think they had 11 steals in the game. Yeah. And they doubled them up, I think, in steals and
01:51:43 blocks. And they're just like, they're maniacal. They're like grinning ear to ears. They're playing
01:51:48 defense. And it's, especially in the context of this season, PFT, where offense, offense, offense,
01:51:54 offense, what's happening right now is Minnesota is emerging as the favorite to win this tournament
01:52:00 by being the best defense we've seen in years. And it's awesome. If you like hoops, it's awesome to
01:52:06 watch these guys just lock up some of the best players in the world.
01:52:09 So how much of that is coaching and how much is the individual defensive efforts?
01:52:13 Both. And one of the stats I got last night sort of reveals that is, you know, I think the average
01:52:18 separation for Denver's three-pointers last night was five feet. And that sounds like a lot, but
01:52:23 that's the smallest margin they've had all year in that metric. In other words,
01:52:27 Minnesota's defenders were in the right places and contesting shots at a level that the Denver
01:52:32 Nuggets shooters haven't sort of experienced all year. They're in the right place. So credit to
01:52:37 Chris Finch for schemes. And then the roster is just full of those dudes that are dogs. They got
01:52:42 the dog in them. They're in the right place, but then they also want to fight and close out on
01:52:47 those shots and they're just athletic and long. So it's a perfect storm.
01:52:51 Yeah. And Anthony Edwards has been the story of these playoffs, his leap, because he was good
01:52:57 before, but the leap he's taking right now, I mean, you statistically are looking at it like
01:53:02 it's clear that he has made that leap and he's playing differently and better, more efficiently
01:53:07 than he was the last couple of years. He also just, I just love watching him play because he
01:53:11 just, you can tell he just wants to beat the fuck out of everyone he plays against.
01:53:15 And that, you know, that's not a stats thing, but his, his leadership, I think is his signature
01:53:19 skill because he's like, everybody loves him on the team. You can tell the team has adopted his
01:53:25 persona more than Carl Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert, who let's face it, don't have that
01:53:30 reputation. And that sort of infectious kick-ass mentality. And then smiling when he's doing that's
01:53:38 Jade McDaniels. Now it's Alexander Walker. It's Kyle Anderson. Like the whole team
01:53:42 has followed in his lead. And what the most impressive about that is, and here's a dumb
01:53:46 stat, the dude's 22 years old. This is like people compared to Michael or Kobe or whatever,
01:53:52 22 years old. I know you had the stat where it was a list of four guys who scored over 35 points
01:53:58 at 22 or younger. Yeah. So that was Lew Alcindor, who that was his name back then, before he became
01:54:03 Kareem, it was a guy named Kobe Bryant. And then it was a guy named LeBron James were the only
01:54:09 other three guys that had scored 35 plus. And then the other thing I think it was three times in a
01:54:14 row. But the other thing, big cat is his field goal percentage. His shooting efficiency numbers
01:54:19 are incredible too. He's 60%, 50% every night. Right. That's the difference. Like last year,
01:54:24 he would, if you look at the stats or the year before, like he had the stats, but the efficiency
01:54:29 is what has gone. And he even said it, he did a great interview where he was like, the hardest
01:54:34 thing I had to do was just work on my shot. And I would take 3000 shots a day in the summer.
01:54:39 And like, now you're seeing what has happened to my game. And you go back to his draft year, right?
01:54:45 And the Intel was, does this guy like basketball? Is he competitive? It's crazy. It's like the exact
01:54:52 opposite. It goes to show you what a pseudoscience, some of this NBA draft stuff is, but a lot of the
01:54:59 Intel around this guy was completely wrong. It couldn't have been more incorrect. Yeah. That one
01:55:04 shot to the fade away he had where he was double teamed, uh, on, on Monday night, that was where I
01:55:09 was like, okay, these MJ comparisons, like they're starting to, to like, I see what people are
01:55:14 saying. Well, he hit the shrug right after that. Well, yeah. And he also said he didn't want to be
01:55:17 compared to him. And then he hit the shot. Yeah. Yeah. That's interesting. It's so much fun to
01:55:21 watch. It was a good show though. He like nailed it. I get bummed out when it's a non Anthony
01:55:26 Edwards night. I'm like, where's Anthony Edwards. I want to watch Anthony Edwards,
01:55:29 American basketball. He's the hero that American basketball needs. I know you like this thing I
01:55:34 had earlier in the season about like, are, are these foreign guys stealing our jobs? Cause the,
01:55:39 the all NBA team is all foreign players and we haven't won an MVP in what, like seven years.
01:55:44 Yeah. And I was saying that like you can really chart out with Yoka, Don,
01:55:47 Chitch, SGA is Canadian. Now when bin Yama and Yonis a path to 2030, where we go a full decade
01:55:55 without an MVP. Now, Anthony Edwards, the slash two weeks has said something to say to that.
01:56:00 I like to build the wall, Anthony. Yeah. Let's make this a USA. Our guy. That's why we ride.
01:56:04 Indians pay for that. Yeah. Yeah. He's also, I can't wait for the Olympics because like
01:56:08 it's always fun. We were going to, we should win the gold. But one of the things about watching
01:56:15 the Olympics is watching all these guys interact and having a moment where it's like, it's Anthony
01:56:20 Edwards kind of league now, like LeBron's older, Kevin Durant's older, like, will that show up
01:56:25 where it's like, no, he's the dude now. Yeah. Team USA basketball, which I got to work for
01:56:30 in 2016 was one of my favorite experiences. But the 2012 team had sort of this vibe to big cat
01:56:35 where Kevin Durant was a baby coming out of the university of Texas, no big deal.
01:56:39 But on a team, you want a lot of championship, Kobe and LeBron and Chris Paul. Uh, I forget
01:56:45 everybody was on, but it's incredible. And he was, he was the 22 year old, 21 year old. You can look
01:56:49 it up, but he was the leading scorer in that tournament. And it was like, Oh my God, like
01:56:54 Kevin Durant. And, um, I think that's like what it's setting up for, for Anthony this summer is
01:56:59 like, Oh my God, this is the best player in American. I mean, it's a, it's the dream team
01:57:03 in 92. I know MJ had already won titles, but like the, the, the passing of like, Oh, it's magic and
01:57:08 birds on this team. They're older. They're about to retire. It's like these young guys are here.
01:57:12 And he already just destroyed Kevin and, um, you know, uh, uh, Devin Booker, who is competing for
01:57:18 the starting spot on that team in the back court. That's obviously going to Ant-Man now. Uh, it's,
01:57:25 it's just one of the things that makes the NBA playoffs so good is this kind of thing.
01:57:29 And to be honest, this is the best sort of emergence of a superstar in this post-season
01:57:34 tournament we've seen in a very long time. Hey man, Jalen Brunson, cause I, we had the argument,
01:57:39 uh, before the playoffs, like I I'm very particular with the phrase superstar. I think it's a list of
01:57:44 like five to seven guys and Anthony Edwards and Jalen Brunson weren't on that list yet because
01:57:49 they hadn't done it for enough years. But these playoffs are exactly where a superstar starts.
01:57:54 Like they are now on the path to superstardom in the league. Yeah. I didn't know you were such a
01:57:59 well, I just think it's, you know, we had a good with Steven Shea here. I was, he was like, I,
01:58:06 he listed his superstars. It was literally just every all-star. So Jalen Brunson's not a superstar.
01:58:10 He's on his way. I think you have to do it. I think you have to do it for multiple years
01:58:15 and you have to be like, this is one of the five to seven best basketball players in the world.
01:58:19 Okay. That those are fair criteria. I think Jalen Brunson is dude. Talk about a hand up moment for
01:58:26 a lot of us. It's like, Oh, the Knicks signed Jalen Brunson. They overpaid him. Yeah. They got
01:58:31 laughed at. Yeah. I laughed at them. It's just like the Anthony Edwards draft Intel. If you go
01:58:35 back to that transaction, people are like, Oh, whatever. And who, who would have thought the
01:58:40 Mavs now think about it from the Mavs perspective, like, Oh my God, what did you just give up?
01:58:45 You weren't willing to pay this guy. And now he's like running Madison square garden in the spring.
01:58:49 And yeah, he's on the way to superstardom now. Like I fully, that's how quickly it can change.
01:58:54 It's easier to get there when you're in New York city too. Right. And you're helping the Knicks to
01:58:58 the conference finals potentially. It's also the way that Jalen and Anthony Edwards are doing it,
01:59:03 where it's like 35, 40 points a game carrying their teams. That's super start.
01:59:08 Yeah. And the shots that he made in game one against Indiana down the stretch were
01:59:12 definitely big boy shot. Like I love the way he plays. I mean, undersized guys,
01:59:17 we just love it. The two feet and the paint, it almost looks like a college basketball player.
01:59:22 And Jay Wright deserves a lot of credit. I joke for, for making the Knicks so good with Dante
01:59:26 DiVincenzo and Josh Hart, who's also just this phenomenal sort of emergent player.
01:59:32 We were going to ask you this. We talked about it on our hot seat, cool throne,
01:59:35 but do you know the story about Josh Hart? Uh, like hurting his wrist in early April
01:59:40 and he is risk clicked. And he told Jalen Brunson he can shoot threes now.
01:59:44 And he actually can shoot threes now. I don't know what your stats, you got to find some stats on
01:59:48 that. Do maybe go back. Yeah. Five minutes, April 7th. And he said that he could shoot threes. Now
01:59:53 he is shooting threes and a way better clip than he ever has in his career. Sounds like potential
01:59:58 nerd nugget material. I don't know where he is. It's crazy though. April 7th. Cause yeah,
02:00:03 Nick Nurse and when I was on the show a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about how Nick Nurse
02:00:07 was leaving this dude open on purpose. I was talking to one of the Bulls assistants last
02:00:11 night and they're like, yeah, we just used to leave Josh Hart open. I need more of his wrist
02:00:14 clicks. So it's like, that's the new money ball. Yeah. Just damaging your, your player's wrists.
02:00:19 And then they're able to shoot the ball. Well, yeah, man, you got to find, we need a stat.
02:00:22 Somebody needs a mallet. Somebody attack Russell Westbrook's wrist. That's what I'm saying. He
02:00:27 needs to put, he needs to put a Russell Westbrook's hand in a guillotine and then shut it and then sew
02:00:32 it back on. Then he'll be good again. Yeah. That's, that's, I'm going to send you it right
02:00:36 now and you can, we'll get a new graphic that you can put together his shooting percentage since
02:00:40 that happened. We'll do it. We'll do it for the, for the, for the social. But I think you're right.
02:00:45 You know, they're saying like this Tommy John surgery in baseball, these guys come back with
02:00:49 their UCL. And I know Blake has got a UCL injury going on. Two of them. Is he doing like the V
02:00:55 load? Is he thrown way to baseballs? Yeah. We had him thrown a curve ball way too early.
02:00:59 Yeah. I called him Blake up to Grom. Yeah. Yeah. 85. Yeah. Bark prior. There's all sorts of
02:01:05 nicknames being thrown around about him. But so I want to get back to the nuggets real quick.
02:01:09 Uh, Jamal Murray, he has had a kind of an up and down playoff so far. We've been talking about him
02:01:17 a lot cause he's made some huge shots, especially in that series against the Lakers that kind of
02:01:21 glossed over some of the other stuff that he's been doing. I think he's injured. He seems to be
02:01:26 not himself. Can we look at what he did last year compared directly to how he's played this year
02:01:31 and see like a, a Mark drop off in his production? Yeah. And word jump shots. I mean, he was an
02:01:38 absolute killer last year, uh, on the perimeter and making his jump shots. And he is now one of
02:01:43 the coldest jump shooters in these playoffs and, and with a few big exceptions in the Lakers
02:01:48 series. But yeah, like he has been just not himself. He was just making all of those big
02:01:55 shots, uh, last, uh, last year, like you said, and I think he's obviously frustrated. And one
02:02:02 of the things we don't do well enough in basketball and I think football discourse as well as like,
02:02:06 you know, what makes scoring hard is really good defense. And we already talked about
02:02:10 Minnesota's defense. And when you have Jaden McDaniels and Alexander Walker in your face,
02:02:16 just, it's, it's harder to, you know, when Ed Reed is back there playing defense,
02:02:21 suddenly your passing game, isn't as good as it is normally. And I think Minnesota is the exact
02:02:26 wrong team to try to sort of get warm up against right now. And so Jamal Murray is, he's definitely
02:02:32 hurt. Uh, he's not himself. He's cold. Uh, and the Lakers are pretty good defense too. So it's just
02:02:37 the perfect storm in my opinion. Yeah. And also out in the West, and we can just talk about this
02:02:41 quickly. Um, the Suns, we watched the Suns and we said, the Suns, they really suck. The Suns are
02:02:48 shitty. Can you tell us why they suck and why they're shitty? Like get, get nerdy with it because
02:02:53 it's the eyeball test for us. We're like, Oh, this team just sucks. Yeah. I'll give you two big
02:02:58 indicators that I like to look at. One, they had the worst defense in the playoffs against, uh,
02:03:02 you know, a team that is really good, but you can't be the worst defense in the playoffs in
02:03:06 advance. And I think specifically they don't protect the rim and rebound very well, which
02:03:11 are not very glamorous, but really important jobs on defense. And then they don't threaten the paint
02:03:17 on offense. They love to settle for two point jump shots and even three point jump shots, but they're
02:03:23 with Booker, Beal and KD obviously great jump shooters, but they don't space the court in part
02:03:30 because they don't threaten the rim. Uh, and a lot of the best teams with even with like Rudy
02:03:34 Gobert, Anthony Edwards, these guys can get dunks and layups. And when you don't do that,
02:03:40 it's a lot easier to play defense against the team that you don't really have to worry about
02:03:44 attacking the paint. All right. So in the West, uh, it feels like, it feels like we haven't seen
02:03:50 the thunder and you said, yeah, he's pussies. They're pussies. The sound went out on my,
02:03:56 okay. The, uh, the thunder, we haven't seen him play in forever. Thunder Matt fans are mad that
02:04:01 we haven't talked about them. They made quick work of the Pelican Pelicans. And it was also weird
02:04:06 scheduling cause it was off nights for us. Um, I love watching the thunder play because they have
02:04:11 another like young nucleus that is so much fun. So we're taping this right before the Mavs thunder.
02:04:16 Uh, tell us what you think is going to happen in this series and why the thunder could potentially
02:04:22 win it all. Like I, I mean, we just have, we haven't seen him playing forever. It's crazy.
02:04:27 They're so young. The craziest stat from the first round might be this one. They had one
02:04:33 person over 25 years old, years old score in their first round series. And it was Ken
02:04:38 Risch balloons. He scored two points. Wow. So what I'm saying is beat them now because they
02:04:43 might even go to the finals this year, but this team is built for the rest of this decade and
02:04:48 beyond. They are young and I think they are deep and they are built for longterm success.
02:04:55 But speaking of this year's opponent with the Dallas Mavericks, I think this series is pretty
02:05:02 close to a coin flip for me. I'll give the edge, the thunder just cause they have home court. And
02:05:06 that's a really tough place to play. Somebody, when I was at the Spurs, we went up there and
02:05:10 we'll get our butts kicked a lot. And that crowd is not lead the league in putting on the shirts.
02:05:15 They have a huge t-shirt, uh, yeah, they do t-shirt culture there. It's huge,
02:05:22 but it feels like a college basketball gym and all seriousness. It's like, wow, this is a really loud
02:05:26 environment. And so that's a hard place to win. Uh, obviously Luca Donchic and Kyrie Irving can
02:05:31 both win a playoff game on the road if they need to. Uh, but the thunder, great defense, great
02:05:37 depth. And it all starts with SGA, who is the most active rim attacking. He can score in all three
02:05:43 levels, but he's a playmaking guard. Who's just perfect to, to start an offensive possession with.
02:05:47 And he's, you know, the most drive happy guard in the NBA. And, uh, the Mavericks are really
02:05:53 interesting because they were one of the worst defenses in the first half of the NBA. They made
02:05:57 some major transactions at the deadline and then became one of the statistically best defenses. So
02:06:03 it's sort of this Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at the end of the season, they look like they could win
02:06:08 it all too. Um, but it's, I'm still not sold that their defense is as legit as it looked like.
02:06:12 Yeah. And we've talked a lot about the West though. There definitely, there's an imbalance
02:06:17 still in basketball. When we talked to you a couple of weeks ago, I asked you to look into
02:06:22 why the West has just been dominant over the East for, it feels like 30 years. Is there a reason?
02:06:27 Anytime a league divides itself in half, it is setting itself up for imbalance. Like this
02:06:34 arbitrary division, whether it's the American league and the national league, the AFC and the
02:06:38 NFC, and you separate your teams and you say, our playoffs are going to be divided in half based on
02:06:43 this arbitrary division. Um, but the small market teams I did look into this PFT have just been the
02:06:49 best. They, they, to compete with the Lakers, they had to get smart in the money ball era, right?
02:06:54 So money ball comes out in 2003, the Spurs are winning with smarts, the nuggets, the thunder,
02:07:00 the jazz, the timberwolves. Now, if we're going to beat the Lakers and the warriors,
02:07:06 we have to be the smartest teams, almost like the rays in baseball, but they're smarter with
02:07:11 international players. They're smarter with analytics. They're smarter with sports science.
02:07:14 There's just a disproportionate amount of those genius teams in the small markets in the Western
02:07:19 conference. Interesting. Genius teams, genius teams in the West. That's my new book. And so
02:07:24 the, uh, the Lakers are not, they're not a genius team. They're just the Lakers.
02:07:28 The Lakers can make a phone call to anybody in free agency, any year they want. And just,
02:07:32 there's three ways to build a basketball team, traditionally trade draft and free agency. And
02:07:36 the Lakers have a sort of disproportionate access to that free agency level. Yeah. You know,
02:07:41 and you talk about San Antonio or Oklahoma city, but you guys just cheating the draft.
02:07:45 We cheat in the draft, which is sure, but we're not getting LeBron James to take his talents to
02:07:50 San Antonio and free agency. We're not getting Kawhi Leonard to come to us in free agency. He
02:07:56 might depart, uh, as he did. But so a lot of these small market teams have had to build from the
02:08:01 ground up in a more sustainable way. And it turns out that might be a better way to build a basketball
02:08:06 team. It's it's we we've talked about a theme of these playoffs is it feels like maybe the super
02:08:11 team era is kind of fading away where it's like, you see these teams, the, the thunder, the wolves,
02:08:18 these homegrown teams. Now they've made trades, but those were trades with assets they already
02:08:23 had, or they were able to get even the Celtics. I know people were like, what are you talking about?
02:08:27 Chris stops and Derek White's like, well, they were smart with who they traded for and how they
02:08:32 maneuvered everything. It does feel like we're getting back to this, this like more organic team
02:08:38 building. And I love it. I think it's better for the NBA. Yeah. I think the super team era sort of
02:08:42 starts with maybe you cover the Celtics with KG and that, but I think it really starts with the
02:08:47 decision, right? To 2010 where these guys, mostly American players team up in big American cities,
02:08:54 like Los Angeles or Miami or whatever. Um, but yeah, those teams are out and the old guys are
02:09:00 kind of out. Stefan is out. Kevin Durant is out. LeBron James is out and who's left. It's,
02:09:06 it's Anthony Edwards and this Minnesota team that is very deep. It's the thunder,
02:09:10 uh, that are very deep. Luca Donchic and the Mavs. Um, so I, I think that is a fair take and I hope
02:09:16 it's better basketball cooler. And if the small markets are able to compete, it's better for the
02:09:21 league to do you have advanced analytics on Lou Dort and his defense? Yeah, of course. I mean,
02:09:26 he's an absolute maniac. He's a pest. He's built like a brick house and he is long and he, the
02:09:33 biggest thing is does he have that dog in him and he's got that French Canadian dog. Yeah. I like
02:09:38 that. Do you have, do you have any metrics that say whether or not a player has a dog in them?
02:09:42 You didn't prepare me for that. Yeah. You should, that's the formula you should come up with maybe
02:09:46 for next year. Okay. It's like where you reach dog stats. We can help you. Yeah. Yeah. It's not
02:09:51 just, it's not just like scoring or technical fouls. That's one of them. There's a lot of,
02:09:56 there's a lot goes into dog. Throw the ball into the stands. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's good. That's
02:10:02 a lot of dog. Run to the locker room and tweet about your podcast right after the game. That's
02:10:06 dog. Yeah. But I think like steals and blocks are like the traditional ones, but yeah. Do you show
02:10:12 up on defense and going back to these timber wolves who are taking the NBA by storm, they all
02:10:17 got that dog in them. So we'll start there and we'll do a deep dive, but let's introduce that
02:10:21 dog in them stat. I think clapping in another player's face after a turnover, that's a big
02:10:27 time dog move. That's a dog move. I would also add clapping another player's face when they miss a
02:10:32 foul shot. Yeah. Dog. What about like Filipowski, like tripping or kicking? He was here today. We
02:10:38 talked, I talked to him briefly. Is that dog stuff or no? He's got a bill. Do guys don't have dog in
02:10:44 them? They got to, they got to earn it. They usually do a weird haircut or some type of tattoo
02:10:47 in the NBA and then they get it. Yeah. We don't speak ill of Filipowski because he was so close
02:10:52 to death and it's a miracle that he came back. So I don't want to, it's like talking shit about
02:10:56 DeMar Hamlin. We don't want to do that. I think about those guys all the time together. Yeah.
02:11:00 Prayers for Kyle. The league could have changed forever. We could have probably ended basketball.
02:11:03 It was scary. Yeah. Frightening moment. Really scary. Yeah. Okay. So the one team we didn't
02:11:08 mention or the series we didn't mention is Celtics and Cavs. Cocky Hank is all the way back. We've,
02:11:13 we've coaxed it back out of him. He was scared of the heat. The Celtics are far and away better
02:11:18 than everyone in the East. Is that a fair statement? Yeah. I call it, you know, there's
02:11:21 the G league. I call the Eastern conference, the E league. So cocky Hank should be cocky in part
02:11:25 because that the, the draw, as we would say in March madness, they have the easy bracket and
02:11:30 no disrespect to the Pacers or the Knicks or certainly the Cavaliers. But you look at the
02:11:36 four remaining teams in the West, big cat, come on. Yeah. They could all win the championship.
02:11:40 And I just don't say, I don't think that about the Indianapolis Pacers, Indiana Pacers or the
02:11:46 Cleveland Cavaliers. So the Celtics have been the best team all year. They deserve it. Part of that
02:11:51 might be because they've had an easier schedule. But part of that is because they're a great
02:11:55 freaking basketball team and they are as deep as it gets. And yeah, they're going to get to
02:11:59 the finals. In my opinion, I think the calves could steal one or two games as we saw. Even
02:12:04 the Miami heat could steal one with that three point shooting. But what about specifically Chris
02:12:09 Stapps? Because he's out several, no minimum of several games. What does that change though,
02:12:17 for their team? You'd imagine Al Horford's going to play more. Yeah. I'd see some Luke Cornette,
02:12:21 but what, like, does that affect their ceiling drastically when Chris stops is not playing?
02:12:27 Yeah. A hundred percent. It's one piece. They'd have to take off the chessboard out of the
02:12:30 rotations. And what he's really good at is spacing the floor on offense. He can stand 28 feet out and
02:12:35 shoot threes, bring that opposing big out. You know, if Jared Allen's able to play or Evan Mobley,
02:12:40 essentially taking them out now, Al Horford can do that a little bit too.
02:12:44 But they don't know if Al Horford can play 40 minutes. So really losing that depth in the front
02:12:50 court is a meaningful thing. And if they were playing a Western Conference opponent, it might
02:12:54 be a fatal flaw. So I think their easier draw plays in here and I expect them to win even without
02:13:00 Chris Stapps. But I laugh because the minimum of several games as an analytical thinker is like,
02:13:04 what does that even mean? No idea. More than one. Should they actually,
02:13:08 should they lose some games on purpose? Oh. Give him more time to get back?
02:13:11 I like how you're thinking. Well, they do have the set. The NBA does have a set start date for
02:13:16 the NBA finals. So they could just like, there's, there's only, there's all sweeps from now on.
02:13:22 There's still, we're going to have to take a break. We hit the pause button.
02:13:25 They have the NBA finals dates set in stone. I don't like that.
02:13:28 Yeah. Usually starts on a Thursday in early June and then game two is on the Sunday.
02:13:32 Well, they've been doing this thing where they're trying out every day of the week now.
02:13:34 Oh really? Yeah. We have, remember last year,
02:13:36 there was like a Friday game, a Wednesday game. They're doing that again.
02:13:39 Yeah. I guess that never occurred to me. Yeah. They're trying.
02:13:42 I hope, I hope they find luck. I stand by my take. I still think
02:13:44 they should intentionally lose some games to the Cavs.
02:13:47 Really? I think so.
02:13:49 How many are you thinking? I think two.
02:13:50 That would just hurt their rest. No, they should lose two games.
02:13:53 In all seriousness, Donovan Mitchell is a, one of those dudes who could just go out and win a game.
02:13:58 Yeah. He'll steal a game. He could definitely steal a game. And, and you know, Boston,
02:14:01 if it's tight, like one of their weaknesses is this late game execution. And if Cleveland can
02:14:06 get healthy, I think they can, they can make this a series. But ultimately I think the Celtics are
02:14:11 just too much, too deep, even without Chris Thompson. What about the analytics on, on Cleveland?
02:14:15 Like I don't love when they play both their centers. It feels weird and awkward. And it
02:14:20 feels like they're a better team when Jared Allen or Evan Mobley is out by themselves.
02:14:24 I don't know if you did the research, but I've seen that exact thing. Like when,
02:14:27 when one of them is out, they seem to have a better net rating, better defensive efficiency.
02:14:32 You know, last year when both of them were playing at a very high level, they had one of the best
02:14:36 defenses in the league. But this year you saw that actually, and the numbers backed it up is,
02:14:40 is this Jared Allen, Evan Mobley thing really good? Cause it's two non-shooters. And one of
02:14:44 the things that my first book, Sprawl Ball, was really about was like, can you even have two
02:14:48 non-shooters on the court at any given time anymore? And Cleveland was trying to do that
02:14:52 with both Jared Allen from Austin, Texas, no big deal. But also Evan Mobley just doesn't stretch
02:14:57 the floor very well at this point. Yeah. So if we fast forward to the finals, Cavs versus,
02:15:02 or excuse me, Celtics versus, doesn't matter out of the West. How do the Celtics match up against
02:15:09 the Timberwolves, Oklahoma City, maybe the Nuggets if they can come back, or, you know,
02:15:15 maybe we'll throw the Mavs in there too. Like, is it, should they be the favorites to win?
02:15:20 Yeah. And who should Hank be rooting for? Cause he's rooting hard for one. He like,
02:15:24 he was nervous about the Nuggets. He should be rooting for the Nuggets now.
02:15:28 But he's not nervous about the Wolves. He's like, I think we match up better.
02:15:31 Yeah. I would be terrified of the Wolves based on what I've seen. Six and O, and they've just
02:15:35 dispatched Kevin Durant and Devin Booker like it was nothing. And now have made Nikola Jokic,
02:15:40 who many were saying is the best player in the world three weeks ago and two weeks ago.
02:15:44 And I was one of them. They've made him look very mortal. As cocky as Hank is, that's the team that
02:15:49 should make him the least cocky, in my opinion. I think they would do better against Dallas,
02:15:54 which is a little uneven in some parts. And Boston deserves credit because their roster is so deep.
02:15:59 I mean, Derek White is having a great playoff, Drew Holiday, and obviously Jalen and Jason,
02:16:05 Al Horford. They're just so deep. They have shooting Sam Houser.
02:16:08 I don't know, statistically speaking on the betting market right now,
02:16:14 they have the easiest path to the final. So they have the best odds to win the championship. But
02:16:18 once we're there, whoever comes out of the West, assuming they're healthy, is going to be battle
02:16:22 tested in a way that the Celtics simply won't be. And I will be very tempted to take them,
02:16:27 particularly if it's Minnesota, the way they're playing.
02:16:30 Yeah. I mean, knowing how the coach of the Celtics operates, they should lose some games.
02:16:34 He should intentionally go to a game seven, feel like he's getting choked out,
02:16:38 see if they can respond to adversity. That way, when they get to the finals, they're like, "Yeah,
02:16:41 we've had our battles." Yeah, Minnesota's 6-0. They've played Kevin Durant, Devin Booker,
02:16:46 Nicole Iokic, and Jamal Murray. And Boston is, what, 4-1? And they played a heat team that was
02:16:52 without Jimmy Butler and also banged up in other ways. So cocky Hank deserves to be back. And I
02:16:59 think you guys have done a good job prefacing this, "until the finals."
02:17:02 Yeah. Cocky Hank is not going to like, too. I haven't told him this. I haven't said it out loud.
02:17:06 Wolves fans are probably going to be upset at me, but I did take the Wolves 9-1 before the
02:17:11 Nuggets series. I was like, "I feel like this is going to be a tough matchup for the Nuggets."
02:17:15 And now Hank's going to... I haven't told him that. He's not going to listen to this part.
02:17:19 He's going to be mad.
02:17:19 So we'll just save it and I won't even tell him until we get there. But yeah, 9-1. They're
02:17:24 already down to like 3-1.
02:17:25 Did they show up, Jude, whatever it is, that Thursday and they're 12-0? They've just swept
02:17:30 the Western Conference playoffs? Cocky Hank is going to be...
02:17:34 He's going to be sweating.
02:17:34 He's going to be shitting his...
02:17:35 Sweaty Hank.
02:17:36 I think he won't... Yeah, he won't even know. I'll wait. I think he's going to start rooting for the
02:17:41 Nuggets now.
02:17:41 I'll wait and I'll say 9-1. Yeah. I texted him last night, "Are you worried about the Wolves?"
02:17:45 He's like, "No, I think we match up better."
02:17:47 Do you think the legal should suspend Jamal Murray for throwing a challenge flag or a heat
02:17:52 pack or whatever?
02:17:52 The heat pad.
02:17:53 Yeah.
02:17:53 The heat pad.
02:17:54 Who is he throwing it at?
02:17:55 Unclear.
02:17:56 Ref, maybe? That's what I'm...
02:17:57 You know, his throws haven't been very accurate this postseason.
02:18:00 Yeah, we don't know. He might have been trying to throw it to the trainer.
02:18:03 I was saying that, like college football, he should have... The targeting rule, he should
02:18:07 have just started his suspension in the second half. He should have just sat out the second
02:18:11 half and been like, "See? Time served."
02:18:14 I like that. It's always interesting when a guy gets the targeting call right at the
02:18:18 beginning of the second half.
02:18:19 Right.
02:18:20 That's the best time to get it, right? Right at the end of the first half.
02:18:22 I would think at the end of the first half if you're winning.
02:18:25 Yeah.
02:18:26 And that's fine.
02:18:26 Yeah, but he should have just started serving it. So, all right, let's talk about your book
02:18:30 real quick. It's Hoop Atlas, Mapping the Remarkable Transformation of the Modern NBA. Everyone
02:18:36 buy it. It is a great book. He gets you smarter about basketball.
02:18:40 A lot of pictures.
02:18:41 Great Father's Day book. Yeah, a lot of pictures.
02:18:42 Great Mother's Day.
02:18:43 Mother's Day, Father's Day. Will it ship in time for Mother's Day?
02:18:47 Yes, it will. I promise you. You have my guarantee.
02:18:49 I love that. So what is in this book?
02:18:52 This book, so it's about the evolution of the NBA since Jordan. So the first chapter
02:18:56 is about how Michael really made jump shooting cool and made perimeter play cool. And that set
02:19:02 up the revolution that has sort of taken place in the NBA since the 1990s and really opened up
02:19:09 the sport for players like Kobe and Stephan to take jump shooting even higher levels. But long
02:19:15 story short, Big Cat, it's about the evolution of the modern NBA and the superstars that changed
02:19:20 something or invented something that really you can see when we're watching these games today,
02:19:26 that what you wouldn't have seen when we were watching Michael in the early 90s.
02:19:28 I like these books. I like the maps that you put out. I like these books. They've got a lot of
02:19:33 pictures, a lot of maps inside the books. Are you concerned that you're going to have to rewrite the
02:19:38 entire book in two years when Wimby just destroys everything? You've studied basketball and math
02:19:44 your entire life, and then Wimby's now in the NBA and you have to throw all of it in the trash.
02:19:49 Well, you guys will appreciate that. One of the hard things about writing a sports book in the
02:19:53 2020s is the discourse moves so fast. And in the summer of 2023, when I'm really writing a lot of
02:19:58 this book, the Wimby hype is out of control. And the last chapter is about the evolution of the big
02:20:03 man and Joe Gich is the centerpiece of that chapter. But I did get a little bit of Wimby in
02:20:08 there and I hedged a little bit. And if I have one regret, I was like, no, this guy's the future of
02:20:13 the big man. If I had been able to write this last week, he is the perfect extension of that last
02:20:19 chapter because one of the big things, PFD, is he represents the return of the big man, but they're
02:20:25 bigger and badder than ever in terms of their skillset. And I do think that's the next big
02:20:30 thing in the NBA is seven foot dudes that can dribble pass and shoot just like six foot dudes.
02:20:34 Yeah. Volume 2.0. You'll have to release a collector's edition.
02:20:38 Paperback will have an essay just on Wimby. I'm guessing he'll probably win an Emmy.
02:20:41 A love letter.
02:20:42 A love letter.
02:20:43 A love letter to Wimby.
02:20:44 Can you tell us just how good is Wimby in terms of breaking everything that you've
02:20:49 ever studied?
02:20:49 Defensively, it's like having Will Chamberlain in the gym. He is so much bigger and longer than
02:20:57 all these other guys. And some of the plays he's made this year, I always start the Wimby
02:21:02 conversation with defense. There were some crazy stats. The Spurs, and I love them, have been one
02:21:08 of the worst defenses in the NBA over the last five years since they really started tanking,
02:21:13 let's say. And when Wimby was on the court in the second half of the year, they were a top five
02:21:17 defense. And it was just insane because they had no business being there. He comes off the court,
02:21:21 they're essentially the worst defense in the league. He is defensive efficiency in a can,
02:21:25 and he will be for the rest of his career. If you have this guy on defense, you're going to
02:21:29 have a top five defense in the league. If you surround him with people like Minnesota has
02:21:32 surrounded Gobert with, you're going to have the best defense in the league. And then offensively,
02:21:38 he can obviously do things that nobody his size has ever been able to do.
02:21:41 It's crazy. He's so much fun to watch. All right. I have one last question. Rowback question.

02:21:52 So in your book, do you have one guy that changed the NBA that we wouldn't assume did?
02:21:59 Bruce Bowen. Oh.
02:22:02 The rise of the corner three, chapter three is I think one of my favorite chapters. And like it or
02:22:07 not, the corner three is now one in 10 shots in the NBA. The term corner three, Big Cat,
02:22:13 when you're at Wisconsin, we weren't even using that term. And now we say it like 30 times a night
02:22:19 in an NBA broadcast. And Bruce Bowen in the 2003 Spurs really represents the birth of that movement
02:22:27 when they beat the three Pete Lakers in the finals. Bruce Bowen's corner threes were a huge reason why.
02:22:32 And so I think Popovich, Tim Duncan, that whole team deserves credit, but Bowen is the focal point
02:22:39 and really inventing that three and D archetype that Jaden McDaniels represents right now,
02:22:44 or Alexander Walker in Minnesota. What about Bruce Bowen kicking someone in the face?
02:22:49 That in there? He's got that all time. He's got that dog in him. I think. Yeah. He kicked
02:22:54 Wally Zerbiak in the face. If you remember, it was, uh, it kind of looked like Antonio Brown
02:22:58 returning the kick. He just was like, I can't get to the closeout. Let me just try kicking him in
02:23:03 the face. A lot of people don't know this. Tyrese Halliburton actually put Bruce Bowen in a time
02:23:07 machine, uh, to go back and do that after Wally Zerbiak had the worst Tyrese Halliburton take
02:23:12 of all time, calling a fake all-star. Uh, but you know, I think, yeah, Bruce Bowen was, was a pretty
02:23:20 aggressive defender and pretty handsy. And some people might even say dirty. A little bit. Steve
02:23:24 Nash would probably agree with that. Yeah, I think that's fair. I think that's fair, but ultimately
02:23:29 Bruce Bowen is one of the people. And then his teammate Manu Ginobili with the Euro step is
02:23:34 another one. Oh yeah. And being able to catch bats. That's right. Which you should never do.
02:23:40 Yeah. No, he had to get rabies shots. Don't touch a grounded bat. Yeah. Until you had to get rabies
02:23:45 shots in, I think the stomach. Isn't that what happens? Yeah. You have to get the whole panel
02:23:49 of them. Fouchy's just creaming his jeans. He's like, yeah, give him another shot.
02:23:52 Doing my own research on that. Um, it was a bat to give him another one. All right. Well,
02:23:56 everyone should go buy the book. Thank you, Kirk. You're the best. We love having you on.
02:24:00 Um, good luck at the sphere as well. Yeah. Yeah. Good luck. I'll stay on the lower level just to
02:24:08 be safe. Yeah. You got to let me know. You got to give me the scouting report cause I'm going
02:24:10 to go like a month after you, you know, I will be texting you. Yes, absolutely. Um, but yeah,
02:24:15 you're the best. We love having you on. Thank you guys. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs. Thanks.
02:24:19 Thanks Kirk. Okay. Let's wrap up the show. We got pardon your take Hank. Yeah. You got some for us
02:24:26 or also follow Mr. Perry's hot in hockey. Mr. Paris. Great. He's, he is a hockey turtle through
02:24:34 and through. Okay. It's mice form. Yeah. Okay. Also Mr. Pair has meme stressed constantly.
02:24:41 Meme's just what he it's, it's very funny watching memes interact with Mr. Pair because it's like,
02:24:48 like having a new child, he'll just walk over and just be like, Oh yep, he's sleeping and he's up.
02:24:53 He's still sleeping. He's constantly worried that he's being fed too much or too little. Yeah.
02:24:57 And needs his exercise and he's pooping in his own water. Is that good? I guess turtles do it.
02:25:03 Memes is a turtle expert now. Memes. Yeah. Apparently they do it all the time. Okay. That's
02:25:08 cool. I found a thread on it. They're like my little idiot does it too. Is that on tortoise
02:25:14 forum? Uh, that one was on Reddit. Good. Okay. Memes. We got to get you like a little, uh, uh,
02:25:19 backpack or something that you can take Mr. Pair to the, like the bar. Like a see-through one,
02:25:23 like the cats have. Yeah. Like a front, like almost like a lanyard that has Mr. Pair just
02:25:28 hanging out. We're just like a chain. We should get him a leash. Yeah. Or like a baby. Like the
02:25:34 thing you put the baby in Bjorn really does think it's his baby. Yeah. Yeah. I just put it on my
02:25:38 chest. Yeah. Okay. Hey PMT. Hey, Hey, this is a take I've been sitting on for a couple of years.
02:25:46 I'm convinced if James Bradbury was wearing white gloves in the Eagles last super bowl,
02:25:52 that call is never made in the Eagles or super bowl champs. Appreciate you guys.
02:25:56 I mean, Jules has told us this many times that he would get yelled at for wearing gloves that were,
02:26:04 you know, you could see someone holding and when he would wear the red gloves and, and Bill
02:26:09 Belichick would get mad at him. Or was it the white gloves? I think it was it depended on what
02:26:13 the opponent was wearing. Like if they, if, if your opponent's wearing a white uniform, white
02:26:17 gloves, I think are okay. If they're wearing a dark uniform, white gloves, no. Yeah. You want
02:26:21 to match it as closely as possible to get away with cheating. It does. It does feel like a big
02:26:25 advantage. If you are a defensive back, if you're an offensive lineman, why wouldn't you just wear
02:26:30 the glove color of the other team's uniform? It's like Mark Slareth used to love wearing the
02:26:35 burgundy or the gold pants in DC because he could piss himself. No one would ever see. Yeah. When
02:26:40 he got to Denver, the white pants, the yellow shows up. So you think that the, the basically
02:26:44 everything could be different if James Bradbury had just picked different gloves that day.
02:26:48 What a night that would have been. Damn. Yeah. That's brutal. But guess what? The Eagles are
02:26:54 lifting weights. So they're reloaded. Strong. Jalen. So strong. So strong. Eagles are good.
02:27:00 Are they? Is he the guy? Yeah. Jalen? I saw, um, an interesting, I, that's a good question. I think
02:27:08 we should talk about it at some point. Yeah. Well, he was injured last year. Yeah. Uh, our friend Nick
02:27:12 Wright had a pretty good, uh, rant about Howie Roseman, which made me be like, Oh, interesting.
02:27:19 Uh, that's all Nick Wright does is just try and do like the opposite of what everyone else is
02:27:25 thinking. So everyone can have that reaction. But what did he say? So he basically was like,
02:27:30 Howie Roseman, uh, does a really good job of drafting off of the experts mock drafts.
02:27:37 So every time the Eagles have a draft, everyone's like, Holy shit. A plus. They got a guy that we
02:27:43 mocked for the first round in the second round. He was also doing it for like the last three years,
02:27:47 which how are you supposed to know if those, if those are good or bad picks yet? Honestly,
02:27:52 if I was a GM, that's probably, yeah, it's definitely what I would, I would just fire my
02:27:56 scouting department and say, I'm going to make a compilation of let everybody else do the work.
02:28:00 It all started when he, when he drafted Rager over Justin Jefferson, then he never,
02:28:04 and then he never didn't take the consensus guy. Again, I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I'm
02:28:09 saying it's interesting. You know what you're doing? I'm saying it's interesting. Can I not
02:28:14 say something's interesting? Caleb Williams was the consensus pick from mocks. That's interesting.
02:28:20 Yeah. Caleb Williams, because, uh, Stephen Shea said that they should maybe Albert Breer just put
02:28:28 out an entire piece about Caleb Williams and the bears wooing him. And it was just porn,
02:28:33 just like checked all the boxes, checked all the boxes. Great teammate. Great dude.
02:28:38 It's called him. Steph, Steph Curry, like experience watching him throw the football.
02:28:43 Oh, what? Yeah. I don't know what that means. It means Steph Curry's awesome to watch basketball,
02:28:48 play basketball. So it's like that awesome to watch play football. Got it. Yeah. Trick shots.
02:28:53 We're doing trick shots this year. Ben Sims used to do some pretty cool stuff too.
02:28:59 Okay. Not really though. Cause he had some very cool passes. Yeah, but he couldn't really,
02:29:05 he was really good. That's a really important part of it. That's a really important part.
02:29:11 It is impressive how good he was without being able to shoot. Shoot. It was, he is, we've said
02:29:16 this on the show before, but he was the, he's the best basketball player of all time. If there was
02:29:20 no such thing as a rim. Yeah. It'd be like, if I was really, really excited about a quarterback
02:29:25 who could only run, I would never do that. Or it could pass, which Ben Simmons. No, no, no,
02:29:30 you're missing. No, no, no, no. Shooting is the most important part of basketball. Without a doubt,
02:29:36 shooting, putting the ball in the basket is the most important part of basketball. I think it's
02:29:41 the dribbling. If you can't put the ball in the basket, you won't, you won't win games. Rebounding
02:29:48 too. Sixers. Yeah. No, but if you, if you make every shot, then there's no such thing as a
02:29:52 rebound. True shooting. I would say is number one, putting the ball inside the basket. Tip offs. Um,
02:29:58 all right. Part of my take, but if James Dolan wasn't the owner of the Knicks, we would have
02:30:02 been five times or more NBA champions by now. Do you agree? And if so, what owner, what owner
02:30:09 slash individual would be best to run a mega franchise like the New York Knicks? Oh my God.
02:30:14 This is a, so Knicks fans win one series and they're already ready to give themselves five
02:30:19 titles. They mean like historically they would be five time champions. How many titles did the
02:30:23 Knicks? I think he's saying if they were actually had a good owner, like a, like a Mark Cuban,
02:30:26 that was actually able to get players and cared about the team enough to like, you know, get the
02:30:32 best players. Mark Cuban is one, one. He doesn't, he's not like a dynasty guy. Yeah. Imagine if he
02:30:37 was in New York. Um, the best owners. I think about all the thing about all the free agents
02:30:45 that the Knicks just haven't got. I honestly think that if Donald Trump owned a sports team,
02:30:49 it would rock. Yeah. I think it would be the best. I mean, there's definitely better owners than,
02:30:55 than James. There's a lot of better owners than James Dolan, but I don't know if you put in the
02:30:59 best owner. They, the Knicks automatically have five titles. Who is the best owner in sports?
02:31:04 Uh, Stan Kronke. Yeah. Oh, is it Mark Cuban? A free agent owner? Yeah, he is. Um, probably some
02:31:12 sort of non-compete. Oh no, we got rid of non-competes. You can probably own them. Best
02:31:16 owner. I don't know. Who's the best owner? Robert Kraft. Yeah. Who's the best owner?
02:31:25 I mean the Steelers, I guess. Their owners. The Rooney family. He's been doing it for so long.
02:31:30 Tony Khan. Tony Khan. Yeah. Definitely up there. Steve Ballmer's electric. Steve Ballmer, good
02:31:36 owner. Best owner. Josh Harris. I mean the Warriors owners, like, I feel like the best owners are the
02:31:42 owners that just buy the team. They're like, money's not a problem and we're just going to
02:31:47 hire the smartest people we can find. And then not touch it. And then not touch it. Green Bay Packers,
02:31:51 best owners. Hands off. Hands off owners. Yep. Okay. Five titles, I feel like that's a lot.
02:31:57 If the entire city of New York had a collective ownership of the New York Knicks, that would be
02:32:01 awesome. Yeah. That would be great. They'd actually be, I think they'd be worse than
02:32:04 James Dolan. Yeah. Oh my God. What? It's crazier than the Knicks having five titles.
02:32:11 Yeah. I mean it's, yeah. Florida would have won the football national championship in 2001 had
02:32:17 9/11 not happened and the Tennessee game got rescheduled. Interesting. Oh. Let's discuss.
02:32:22 That's a take. That's a take. I mean, let's think about it. Let's look up the Florida schedule in
02:32:26 2001. Okay. Wasn't that the Miami team that was like the greatest football team of all time?
02:32:34 Yeah. But is that the year they lost to Ohio state? No. The year after is when they lost Ohio
02:32:39 state. Okay. That was the Miami team that was one of the best teams of all time. So yeah, I feel
02:32:44 like maybe not, but I like this take just because it's good to just sit there and just tell people
02:32:51 that just be like, Hey, we would have won it all. I'm looking at 2001 football schedule right now
02:32:55 for Miami. The game that was delayed September 22nd at Kentucky, they won 44 to 10. Florida.
02:33:03 Yeah. Florida beat Kentucky 44 to 10. When did they play Tennessee?
02:33:07 December 1st. Much later in the season. September 15th. Right. Oh, so that's the one that got moved.
02:33:13 Yeah. Okay. And let's, they defeated them in week 13, uh, 34, 32. All right. Now again,
02:33:21 Miami did not lose a game that year. So that feels pretty important. Is that the only loss
02:33:26 Florida had? No, they lost that Auburn. Ah, that's tough, but they finished number three. So
02:33:32 maybe the way that season broke, they could have snuck in at number two with one loss.
02:33:36 Okay. I'm looking at, at Tennessee's early season schedule that year. See how they were at the start
02:33:40 of the year. They, uh, they beat Arkansas 13 to three, September 8th. Not, not great. Not that
02:33:48 impressive of a win. It feels like Tennessee wasn't playing their best ball. And then after
02:33:53 nine 11, Tennessee beat LSU number 14, 26 to 18. So the argument would be that they would have
02:34:01 gotten in over Nebraska who had one loss in the BCS national title. Still think Miami would have
02:34:06 won that game. They might have. Yeah. But they, I mean, can you imagine a Miami against Florida?
02:34:11 Would have been great. It would have been awesome. Either way. I like this take because it's just,
02:34:15 it's something you can just sit down and just be like, yeah, we could have won it all. Um,
02:34:18 if it wasn't for Osama bin Laden and Miami did, did kind of paste Nebraska. I hope this guy is
02:34:24 old enough that he was mad about that in real time. Cause that means he's like 50.
02:34:30 Yeah. Which is just very funny. Like it's better than if he was like, you know, just a Florida fan.
02:34:35 That's like looking up the stats and, and you know, if he actually remembers 2001 season and
02:34:41 he was mad in real time, I respect that take. Yeah. I respect that take as well. Oregon also
02:34:46 was very good that year. Only had one loss. Do you think there's Colorado in their bowl game,
02:34:51 which Colorado was also good? Uh, yeah, I'm going to say, I believe they could have been to the
02:34:57 national title. They would have lost to Miami. Do you think that there's any Tennessee fans out
02:35:00 there or just fancy college football that during the moment in 2001, when they announced that they
02:35:05 were delaying all the games, they're like, this is bullshit. Clay Travis college football. Yeah.
02:35:10 Yeah. We need college football. We need college football to help us heal. I feel like every
02:35:14 fan has like one moment though, that they go like way back in time and be like, we would have won
02:35:18 it all if this wasn't, Oh, for sure. That didn't happen. Villanova would have won the national
02:35:22 championship in 2005 if there wasn't the biggest phantom travel call of all time on Allen. Right.
02:35:28 Justin, Justice Winslow touched it in the national title game against Wisconsin. That's a fact.
02:35:35 Fact. Yeah. I liked this take. I think ninja wrote this one. Punters should be better.
02:35:41 You're one of 32 people in the world that do this for a job. I don't understand how they don't drop
02:35:46 it within five yard line every single time. Yeah. It's ninja one shank punch that leads to
02:35:50 an immediate termination. Also more fat punters is objectively better for the greed. I agree with
02:35:55 that. I kind of agree with this take, like kickers in general should just be better because that's
02:36:01 their only job. Well, they are the best that they've ever been. Yeah, but they should even
02:36:05 be better than that. They will be better at some point. Uh, I agree with this take for punters,
02:36:09 especially what always weirds me out is when there's a good punter in college and then he
02:36:13 goes to the NFL and he sucks. Yeah. It's literally the same job. Yeah. Different ball. Yeah. Slightly,
02:36:18 but still like, I feel like if you're a great college punter, there's no excuse to not be a
02:36:23 great NFL punter. Punters should be better. I also think that like golfers should be better at
02:36:27 putting. Yeah. Just put it in the hole. Just that, that's something like if you're a professional
02:36:31 golfer, you should just never miss a putt. Anything 10, 10 feet and in should never be missed
02:36:37 ever. But that's just me. I wouldn't miss it if I were a professional golfer. You know,
02:36:42 the best punter of all time is low key. Big Ben. He's a pretty good punter. Yeah. The pooch
02:36:47 points were a lecker. Did have a good pooch punts. What other sports do should players be better?
02:36:52 Uh, foul shots, foul shots, definitely open threes. Yeah. Every open three should be made
02:36:58 all the time. I gotta make those. Yeah. I feel like penalty kicks,
02:37:03 penalty kicks, tennis players should never double fault. I agree. Dennis,
02:37:06 let's never do tennis players. I'll feel there should never miss a ball.
02:37:10 Yeah. Uh, hockey players just shoot more. You'll score more goals. Yeah, that's a fact. Also don't
02:37:17 let any soft ones. You can't let a soft one in. Never left. Let us off. What do you think, Hank?
02:37:23 Yeah. I mean, baseball and hockey are tough. Free throws is definitely everyone should. Every NBA
02:37:29 player should be 80% better than free throws. Soccer players should also never understand
02:37:33 why tall people are bad at free throws. That's never made sense to me. Yeah. You're shooting
02:37:37 like down to soccer players should also be better at scoring goals. Yeah. Just in general. Like I
02:37:43 always, when I'm watching a game, like kick it from 30 feet out. That should go in every time.
02:37:49 A football player should never miss a tackle. In fact, they should take pride in their tackle.
02:37:53 Yeah. Agreed. Wrap up. Agreed. Uh, okay. Is that it? That's it. Good. Pardon your takes.
02:37:59 Like that. Uh, all right, let's do numbers. Max, you ever gotten this? Nope. Eight. 20. PFT. Have
02:38:07 you ever gotten this? 46. Not yet. Three. 72. 18. Please tune in to the Wells Fargo Championship
02:38:14 on PGA Tour Live this week. Max Thoma will be playing. Fuck yeah. 99 putt. 21.
02:38:25 Max, what'd you say? You never gotten this? Yeah. PFT also said that he's never gotten this.
02:38:33 No, I said I haven't gotten it yet. Yeah. Tell the whole story, Max.
02:38:36 Oh, 26. Oh my God. No, you weren't that close. From my angle. I'm far away. I thought I hit it.
02:38:47 Nah, you didn't though. You weren't that close. So did Hank. Hank thought he hit it. I hit it too.
02:38:51 No, he thought I hit it with 46. No one thought you hit it. No one thought you were close. Well,
02:38:56 no one thought Hank hit it either. Fuck face. 26 is way closer to 46 than 20.
02:39:01 How? Explain. Because it's got the number. Because it's got the six and a two if you look
02:39:05 from the blocked angle, it kind of looks like a four. Yeah, well there's a zero inside of a 26.
02:39:11 That's a good point. Yeah. Yes, there is. A small little zero. Who was closer?
02:39:15 Hank. Hank was way closer. Yeah. Hank used to be the loser of this fucking game. Also,
02:39:20 price straight rules. You can't go over. Yeah, then I won. It's pretty simple. Then I won again.
02:39:25 All you got to do is pick the right number, Max. It's not that hard. Yeah, PFT. It's not that hard.
02:39:30 PFT is going to. He's just waiting. Yeah, PFT. It's not that hard. Why are you talking to me?
02:39:33 I didn't think I won this one. All right. I'm not so pressed about this. Let's do another one.
02:39:38 That I'm imagining numbers coming up. Our first double in a while. Max is so mad he's hallucinating.
02:39:43 This counts. We'll do another one. Numbers. I'm going to stick with eight. 46. Three. 20. 18.
02:39:51 72. 99. Pug. 21.
02:39:56 The cat's boxing out the machine. No one can see the number.
02:40:06 79. I thought it was 72. I thought it was 99. I was so close. Pug is a dynasty. Oh no.
02:40:20 79. So close. Love you guys.
