00:00Hi, I'm Jacqueline DiMatteo.
00:01I'm the costume designer of The Idea of You.
00:03We are going to break down some looks from the film.
00:05♪♪
00:07-♪ This is what we want ♪
00:08♪ Up the mall, gotta go ♪

00:13♪ What you gonna do? What you gonna do? ♪
00:16I started prepping in New York,
00:17and that was very important to me
00:19because we shot the film in Atlanta,
00:21the Bergdorf Goodmans and that sort of thing in New York
00:23and all the designer boutiques.
00:24And even from, like, upstate New York,
00:26we did some vintage rentals and that sort of thing.
00:29Hayes' first Coachella outfit,
00:32that was a Young Maven T-shirt,
00:34and then he's wearing Margiela trousers.
00:36So the cut of his pants were always,
00:39you know, a wider leg, a little slouchy,
00:42a little drop crotch sort of thing,
00:44intentional to give him that cool factor.
00:46And a lot of Lueve, I used a lot of Margiela,
00:49Saint Laurent, they were all designers
00:50because that's what he would be wearing,
00:53even though it is just a classic tee and a trouser.
00:56But it was great fabric on the trouser,
00:58and we altered the T-shirt to make it
01:00to the perfect proportion for him.
01:02Nick and I had discussed Matt Healy from 1975.
01:05With him and with the band,
01:06the obvious comparisons are gonna be made.
01:11You know, it was the One Direction and all of that.
01:13But it, of course, is dated now
01:15because that was so many years ago.
01:17I liked sort of the casual feel of what they did
01:19as opposed to being too glossy or too shiny
01:22or suits and all uniformed looking.
01:25It just felt natural with Nick
01:27to just sort of land where we did.
01:29And then once we just were like,
01:30let's stay a little more cool, you know,
01:32like keep it classic, but have those sort of details
01:35and those touches where we can make it work.
01:37And that's kind of how we landed with Hayes.
01:40This dress is a Chanel vintage dress.
01:43What caught my eye about this dress was the chenille on top,
01:46and then it's this beautiful silk skirt.
01:49And the color was so vibrant to me,
01:50that purple that her and I had been discussing
01:52with our palette.
01:53I just knew this was gonna be one of the dresses
01:56that we were gonna see a lot.
01:57And then I found this etro velvet navy blazer
02:01to compliment it.
02:02And then it worked so well through the sequence
02:03because he comes in, they go to the gallery in Pasadena.
02:08She takes her jacket off, you see her shoulder.
02:10There's gonna be movement.
02:12You know, she was on the piano and he kind of grabs her.
02:15Ended up being so beautiful.
02:17Hayes' look when he first comes into the gallery
02:21to buy some art, to buy every piece of art from her.
02:24I wanted his sort of street style to be,
02:27I, you know, I'm not gonna lie.
02:28Of course I looked at Harry, you know, like I did.
02:31Cause I do like a lot of Harry's street style looks.
02:34Yes, of course you pull inspiration
02:36because as a costume designer, that's what you do.
02:37You have, you know, inspiration and mood boards,
02:39but it doesn't really start
02:41until you get the clothes on the actors.
02:43He's wearing an Isabel Marant sweater
02:45and he's wearing a Bottega tank.
02:47He would always come in to his fittings
02:48wearing a simple baseball hat.
02:50And we had tried some other baseball hats
02:51cause he's getting paparazzi on the street.
02:53And he really liked his own personal hat and I did too.
02:56So we chose that.
02:58Also, I liked the texture of the sweater.
03:01Besides looking cool and great,
03:02it looked also warm and inviting.
03:05The scene is so long
03:06and there are moments of him being vulnerable,
03:08but also it still looked like his pop star self.
03:13After we tried it on, he talks to me and he's like,
03:16can you give me the details?
03:18And he purchased it like right after
03:21so that he could have it because he loved it.
03:24When Solana's traveling to visit Hayes in the hotel,
03:28she knows what she's going to do.
03:30You know, she knows why she's going.
03:32She puts on this very sexy two-piece Fendi ensemble,
03:36the Dior trench coat.
03:37I love the movement of the trench coat.
03:39I loved that there was a reveal when she got into the room.
03:43You know, in this scene,
03:44they ended up playing off of what she was wearing.
03:47It's such a like hot scene.
03:49It started off so sexy and hot
03:51and then it kind of goes into them being very playful
03:55and you see these sort of different sides
03:56of what's going on, you know, in the hotel.
03:59I love that it was sheer, but it wasn't too sheer, you know?
04:03And then we put the right undergarments under it too
04:05so it wasn't so revealing.
04:08And the fabric was so light.
04:09It was almost just this like silk gauze.
04:12It was one of those pieces that I saw
04:13that I said, I have to see this on.
04:16And then when I brought it into the fitting,
04:17Anne was like, what is this?
04:20And then she put it on and we were like, oh my God.
04:21It's like drop dead gorgeous on her.
04:24This purple dress is by Acne.
04:27There was a lot about the color,
04:28but when it came in, Anne was immediately
04:31like just drawn to the color.
04:33I didn't realize that Amy was gonna have the purple artwork.
04:37I was like, oh my God, her dress matches the artwork.
04:40Like exact.
04:41It just sort of rounded out the story for me.
04:44She was started this way and then all of a sudden
04:46she's this, you know, rock star's girlfriend.
04:49And we still wanted it to sort of, you know, make sense.
04:51Even though she is wearing on the side of the stage
04:54that one look, she's in a Balmain jacket.
04:56She's in Versace leather pants.
04:58She's in a gold Tom Ford tank.
04:59So there's like those designers she had access to.
05:02I think she did take a little bit of that
05:04from being on tour with them for that summer.
05:07And it's a bit more elevated,
05:08but it's still in her wheelhouse because of the color.
05:11This is the third project I've worked on with Anne.
05:13And so we have a really, really nice working relationship.
05:16And I love collaborating with her
05:18because she listens to me.
05:19I listen to her.
05:20We feed off of each other.
05:22And in fittings, it just turns into something like so great.
05:26I knew while we were filming it
05:28that that's what was going to happen
05:29because everybody worked so well together
05:32and it just turned out beautiful, I thought.
