Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Joe Biden for being the first Asian to win an Oscar as Best Actress in 2023.

In presenting her with the medal on Friday (May 3), Biden said for decades Yeoh has "shattered stereotypes and glass ceilings to enrich and enhance American culture."

00:00Some 19 people were awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom
00:05at a ceremony held at the White House on Friday.
00:08Among them were Malaysian actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh,
00:12U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky, former U.S. astronaut Ellen Ochoa,
00:17and former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
00:21The Medal of Freedom is presented annually by the U.S. President
00:25to recognize individuals who made contributions
00:28to the national interest of the United States,
00:30world peace, and cultural endeavors.
00:33Today we have another extraordinary honor to bestow
00:35on the nation's highest civilian honors of 19 incredible people
00:39whose relentlessness, curiosity, inventiveness, ingenuity, and hope
00:43have kept faith in a better tomorrow.
00:46And on and off the screen, Michelle Yeoh has shattered stereotypes
00:49and glass ceilings to enrich and enhance American culture.
00:53Her roles transcend gender, cultures, and languages,
00:57from martial arts to romantic comedies to science fiction,
01:02to show us what we all have in common.
01:04As the first Asian actor to win an Oscar as Best Actress,
01:08she bridges cultures not only to entertain,
01:10but also inspire and open hearts, and that's what she keeps doing.

01:21he hoped that Ledecky will win more medals in the Paris Olympic Games.
01:27She won her first Olympic gold at age 15.
01:30And though through hard work and humility, she's won 10 Olympic medals,
01:3510, 21 world championship titles,
01:38became the greatest female swimmer of all time.
01:42She continues to compete this summer in the Paralympics at age 27,
01:46which some say is old for swimming.
