00:00Was it, Ifling? Was it to you?
00:03What was it?
00:04Emily, this is me, Ryan, now.
00:06Sorry, I'm still there.
00:09Hi guys, I'm Ryan Gosling.
00:10I'm Emily Blunt.
00:11I'm David Leitch and this is Notes on a Scene, for the Fall Guy.
00:14For the Fall Guy.
00:15We're gonna go again, Colt, because there was a little buzz on that one.
00:18Okay, light him up!
00:20Last one, everybody! Action!
00:22So the scene we're about to see is Jodie and Colt unpacking their past on set in front of the crew.
00:32Let's dive into the scene, let's have some fun.
00:34Here we go, hit the play.
00:36We're going again!
00:38So we're actually really doing this stunt and that is...
00:42Not me.
00:43Ryan Gosling!
00:44Let's pause that, please.
00:45So let's go back for a second.
00:46Here, can we go back for a second?
00:48We're going again!
00:53So we're actually really doing this stunt.
00:55We did a lot of practical stunts in this movie, like more than you would normally do in a film like this.
01:00All this fire is real, but what we did do in this was a motion control shot.
01:04So we actually did a fire burn with Ben, the stunt double, and then we did another motion control pass with Ryan.
01:11See, that is actually you.
01:12My kids said they were cool if I did a stunt film, but that I could not get set on fire.
01:17Real fire, real Ryan, but...
01:19And this is me!
01:20Ben Jenkins came in.
01:21That's me right there.
01:22Ben Jenkins came in and he did it.
01:24He actually said, I guess he called Chris O'Hara and asked if he could get set on fire.
01:28Yeah, he called the stunt coordinator.
01:29Because he'd never done it before.
01:30He'd never done the stunt before.
01:31He was a fire virgin.
01:32We're going to be a great team.
01:33Yeah, yeah.
01:34Why do you ask?
01:35I don't know.
01:36It was eight times, right?
01:37He did eight fire burns.
01:38That's not the limit, that just was your limit.
01:40Or Ben's limit.
01:41Yeah, it was Ben's, that's all he could take.
01:43Now what is the effect on your skin after a fire burn, for real?
01:47Without doing a thumbs up stunt thing, is it bad?
01:50Are you pretty crispy?
01:51No, I mean, the thing about a fire stunt is actually it's a relatively safe thing.
01:56But if it goes wrong, it goes really wrong fast.
01:58So if you're following the protocols, keeping the heat away from you, using the fire gel,
02:03using the protective clothing, it can be really safe and effective.
02:07But if winds change, you know, your safety guys weren't there and you can't put yourself out,
02:12then it's seconds before it turns bad.
02:15Ben's gloves and shoes melted onto his hands and feet.
02:19Oh yeah, he was hot.
02:20This is a lot of fire on a person.
02:23But let's look.
02:24So this is another moment we had Ben.
02:26That's still his face right there, right?
02:28Boom.
02:29That's Ben.
02:30And Ben's going to hit the wall hard, which is great.
02:33Oh!
02:34And then here you have Ryan.
02:37But the fire was not on you.
02:39That was added afterwards.
02:41That fire in there was added in post.
02:43We used a MoCo shot for that one shot where we tied Ryan into the fire stunt.
02:48But all of the stunt stuff that Ben is doing, we just use practical fire.
02:52And part of the reason you do practical fire is that it challenges the visual effects artists
02:57to match when they're adding fire.
02:59And they have things to pull from it.
03:00It makes it more real.
03:01So again, the more practical things you can do,
03:04the better your visual effects are going to end up being, generally speaking.
03:08And Emily's performance was fire.
03:10I don't think you used any gel at all, did you?
03:12I didn't need any.
03:13No.
03:14Dave, are these little pieces of pink tape?
03:16What's going on with those?
03:17They are.
03:18Wait!
03:19Is that our movie or is that Jodie's movie?
03:23That's Jodie's movie making the movie, right?
03:25That's why we kept the wires in.
03:26Obviously, you're seeing a moment in Jodie's film where we're doing a stunt.
03:32But showing it for real.
03:33Yeah, we're keeping all that stuff in there.
03:37Okay.
03:38All right.
03:40So here they are unpacking their relationship.
03:44For a little more context, Cole.
03:46Eliana's sort of devastated.
03:48And she starts sort of replaying everything in her head over and over again.
03:51Did she misread the vibe?
03:53Was it just a fling?
03:54Was it a fling?
03:55Was it to you?
03:57What was it?
03:58Emily, this is me right now.
04:00Sorry, I'm still there.
04:01There's a scene in Gross Point Blank, I think, where Mimi Driver
04:03is berating John Cusack on the radio.
04:06Yeah.
04:07Publicly.
04:08It's amazing.
04:09It was sort of that inspiration.
04:10We're like, how do we take that to the next level, potentially,
04:13and have fun with it in that context?
04:15And so we started to lean in.
04:17And as we did, it just got more fun and more fun.
04:19But also heartfelt at times.
04:21And that's what's great about this scene.
04:23It's sort of a microcosm of the movie and the tone of the movie.
04:27Did she let her imagination run wild again?
04:30Or did he lie to her?
04:32Is he full of shit?
04:33I see you getting gelled up.
04:36I love this.
04:37I love these.
04:38I love these aliens supporting one another.
04:41You don't see enough of that.
04:42These guys were stuntmen because they were walking on stilts
04:44to give them these very long alien legs.
04:47And there were so many aliens on stilts just loping around,
04:50eating a bit of craft service.
04:52And it was just amazing.
04:53They were on fire, too.
04:54They were brilliant.
04:55Internally.
04:57But let me be clear.
04:58Eventually, Eliana did move on.
05:00All right?
05:03And she started doing Pilates.
05:05Got herself a bang in her revenge body.
05:08And then she started dating other humans.
05:10One after another.
05:12Emily Blunt brings that blunt force.
05:14Guys, it's not true.
05:15She can have chemistry with this keyboard.
05:18You can have chemistry with this pink pen.
05:20Suddenly, you want to buy one.
05:21Hey, how's it going?
05:22What's your name?
05:23You're like, oh, where can I get that?
05:25Oh, my God.
05:27Dave and his wife, Kelly, she produces his movies.
05:30He directs them.
05:31They are married.
05:32There's this beautiful love story at the heart of their story.
05:35So it was just like we were just watching.
05:38Just a mirror.
05:39Just a mirror reflecting.
05:41We learned it from watching you, Dad.
05:43No, do you remember when we were doing the donuts?
05:45We looked over and we saw Mom and Dad sitting there.
05:47And she was sitting on his knee.
05:48And we were like, look at these guys.
05:50We're like, this is the movie.
05:52Oh, it was so cute.
05:53All right, I'm it and play.
05:57And then she started dating other humans.
05:59One after another.
06:01And she had so many mind-blowing, far superior experiences.
06:04You wouldn't even believe it.
06:06Right, girls?
06:07You know what I mean?
06:09Yeah, it was like a sushi train.
06:11It was like a sushi train.
06:12It was like a sushi train.
06:13Your accent even elevates the term sushi train.
06:16It was.
06:17I'm not even sure I understand that.
06:18I don't think I want to know.
06:19Have you never been to a sushi train?
06:21You get one after another.
06:22Really?
06:23And they're mind-blowing.
06:27Lots of wasabi, super spicy.
06:29All right, move on.
06:30You talked about how Greta Gerwig was an inspiration for your role.
06:35Well, I was asked whether I thought Jodie was more Nolan or Greta Gerwig.
06:38And I said, I think she's probably a little more Greta Gerwig.
06:41And then it became a story that I based it on Greta, which is probably not true.
06:44I do wear a pink jumpsuit in it, which was a little ode to Greta Gerwig.
06:48It was like Chris Gerwig.
06:49What's that?
06:50It was like a Chris Gerwig.
06:51I'm like Chris Gerwig.
06:56I'm going to be sick.
06:57And do you know what?
06:58We're going to go again, Cole, because there was a little buzz on that one.
07:01And you know what?
07:02I don't think there was a buzz.
07:03Do you guys know what a buzz is?
07:05Would people understand what a buzz is?
07:06I don't think they would.
07:07We quite liked adding all of this little vernacular into it.
07:09Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that maybe you wouldn't understand, but I think you'd kind of glean from context.
07:15But a buzz is when the focus puller didn't quite lock the focus.
07:19And when you're a stunt performer, that's like the worst thing you want to hear.
07:23Because it's like, I have to do this again?
07:25Yeah, you've done something extraordinary.
07:26You've done something extraordinary and dangerous, and the focus didn't work.
07:29And he's like, oh, I have to get set on fire again.
07:31And obviously she's using it to mess with Colt here.
07:42It's just feeling so withheld.
07:44So how about some dialogue?
07:46Yeah, that's all right, darling.
07:47I'm going to go straight to the source.
07:49Hey, Colt, if Space Cowboy had to say something, if he was forced to say something, what would he say?
07:55As a stunt performer, no director's ever given me context of my character, which is a little bit of a stretch, but it's very, very funny.
08:04Which I think is limiting.
08:05Maybe it could have helped you.
08:06I know.
08:07It might help you hit it wrong better.
08:08Yes, it could have.
08:09It could help me double Jean-Claude better, do the splits better.
08:11I don't know if I knew really what it was.
08:14Did you double Jean-Claude Van Damme?
08:15I did.
08:16Is this the fog?
08:17Is your intent in there?
08:18Oh, yeah.
08:19Because this happened a lot while we were shooting, which was pretty funny, which is that this is where the monitors are.
08:24Basically, David had a mirroring setup.
08:26So what was great about our movie is usually on a movie, you hear people going, hey, guys, you're in the back of the shot.
08:32You're in the back of the shot.
08:34Can you move, please?
08:35And in our movie, it didn't matter if our crew was in the back of the shot.
08:38So my question is, I mean, I know this is one of our actors.
08:42But what about this tent?
08:43Is this your tent, David?
08:44Yes, we were using a lot of our stuff as set deck.
08:47Listen, you might have had a go at that sun hat.
08:50Look how many people have hats on like me.
08:52I know.
08:53Guys, it's kind of a set thing.
08:54They're very popular.
08:55It's a set thing.
08:56It really was a set thing in Australia.
08:58I loved this sun hat.
08:59I love my sun hat.
09:00So much so that I...
09:01It became the pinnacle of that scene.
09:04Again, it's a movie about making movies, and it was meta.
09:08Everyone wants to remake IP.
09:09Obviously, Fall Guy IP.
09:11We're like, what would Jodie's IP be?
09:13So we were looking through the Universal list of titles, and Kelly zeroed in on Metal Storm.
09:18And so we looked it up, and we watched the trailer for Metal Storm.
09:21And I'm like, this is a great, perfect sci-fi.
09:24I remember sending you the poster, and you're like, oh, my God.
09:27You were a little harder to get on board.
09:29Listen, I just like...
09:31Okay, all I'm going to say is here's what happened.
09:34What happened?
09:35I think if you're an English person, if people pitch you too hard on something,
09:38your natural instinct is to recoil and say, I'm not sure about it.
09:41And you guys were so passionate about it.
09:43You came in so hot about Metal Storm.
09:44We really wanted you to love Metal Storm.
09:47Listen, I ended up loving it.
09:49You did.
09:50It's a sci-fi epic love story of cosmic proportions.
09:53Chris Nolan.
09:54I know.
09:55Chris Nolan and you guys are the only people suddenly I was in.
09:59I just need a stamp of approval for everything, really.
10:01How would he justify this year she spent spinning out over this?
10:04What could he say?
10:05It's a puzzler, isn't it?
10:06But have you got any thoughts?
10:07Nigel, can you get him a bullhorn?
10:09I can't hear him.
10:10I think bullhorns would be good in couples therapy.
10:13There was an idea you guys had, though, I think.
10:16Get the bullhorn out.
10:18I don't think it's being used enough.
10:19I remember when we were talking about the script, the bullhorn.
10:22I can't remember.
10:23It might have been Emily's idea.
10:24Like, it's better that they're further apart and they're doing this whole thing through the bullhorn.
10:28That was just an example of how things always got elevated when we started to riff on them more and more on set.
10:34Yes.
10:35Traveling.
10:38Oh, this run.
10:39Best run in the movie.
10:40No, no, let's rewind.
10:41Pause it, pause it.
10:42There's so much to unpack here.
10:43It's the best first AD run, which is just a little bit scared.
10:47He probably hasn't peed in hours.
10:48Pause, pause, pause.
10:49Can we just talk about the backwards glasses?
10:52The character choices Adam made.
10:55He was great.
10:56Adam made such good choices.
10:57He's got his script in the back, leather-bound script in the back.
10:59Leather-bound script.
11:00He's got, like, a mini script, which is so efficient.
11:02God, just amazing.
11:03And he's running fast, but he's a little stiff and a little, like, uncomfortable with this situation.
11:08Knows we're wasting time.
11:09Watch how he handles that track.
11:10Watch.
11:11Oh!
11:12Almost.
11:13Like a gazelle.
11:16Best run.
11:17Best run.
11:18I can't think of a better run.
11:22Come again, Colt.
11:23What was that?
11:24It's already on.
11:25In this movie, do the aliens and the humans ever talk in private?
11:32No, not really.
11:33No private conversations?
11:34No, they don't like doing private.
11:36They like to keep it very public, very open.
11:39I'll tell you what elevated the comedy.
11:41This guy.
11:42This guy just showed up to put on an alien suit.
11:45He was just supposed to sit there and listen, but he was just so...
11:49The way he was listening, and we should watch.
11:51Have you ever been in one of those situations where you want to say something,
11:55and it's so important that you can't mess it up?
11:58Yep.
11:59Absolutely.
12:00He's like, I sure have.
12:01And we're like, whoa.
12:02He was a background artist who was just given it.
12:05And so this was after take two, take three.
12:08I remember Ryan goes, we should hand it to him.
12:11This is a moment right now.
12:13Let's just try it and see what happens.
12:21I had a similar situation when I fell in love with my wife's sister.
12:27It's the Australian accent with the alien voice.
12:29I had a similar situation when I fell in love with my wife's sister.
12:34And it was all we could say for days.
12:36It just steals the scene.
12:38Then we loved it so much that he became a big part of the third act.
12:43Where Emily has this amazing fight scene with him.
12:45We have a fight scene with him.
12:46I mean, not with that extra.
12:48That costume.
12:49This scene sort of crystallizes the tone for the movie.
12:52There's really fun bits of action.
12:54There's irreverent comedy and subversive stuff and gonzo stuff.
12:59But then there's this beating heart in the middle,
13:01and it is really about their relationship.
13:03It's actually one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
13:05I'm glad we got to unpack it a little bit today.
13:07Hopefully it's a moment that everyone can relate to in some way,
13:10even though there's normally not bullhorns involved.
