00:00The riots in Manipur in 2023 resulted in 187 deaths and left 300 injured.

00:07Over 60,000 people were forced to move out of their homes.

00:11The army, paramilitary forces and the police struggled to quell the violence in the state.

00:17As the Manipur riots mark one year today, we will be re-looking at a June 2023 issue.

00:25The 2023 clashes were mainly between the Mehti and the Kuki group.

00:30The majority of Mehti are Hindus, the Kukis are mainly Christians.

00:35The recent tensions escalated when the Kukis began protesting against the Mehti's demands

00:40for official tribal status, arguing that it would allow them to buy land or settle in

00:46predominantly Kuki areas in Manipur.

00:49The Kuki community claimed many of its members were evicted by the government to conduct

00:54surveys of forests and their land rights were not respected.

00:58Approximately 6.5 lakh rounds of arms and ammunition went missing during the peak of

01:05violence in May 2023 and only 20,000 were recovered.

01:11Amidst the riots, Manipur also experienced the longest internet blackout in the country.

01:16Two Kuki women were paraded naked by a mob of men after the riots broke out, but due

01:21to the internet blackout, the video evidence only went viral in July.

01:26The Manipur police allegedly failed to protect these women from the mob.

01:31But the Manipur police filed an FIR against Assam Rifle personnel for allegedly enabling

01:36Kuki militants to escape by obstructing the police movements.

01:41Last week, two CRPF personnel were killed in Vishnupur in a blast at one of the force's

01:47outposts.

01:48This was the first instance of targeting of the Central Force in Manipur since last year.

01:53The Manipur violence has rendered many tribal people helpless and homeless.

01:59A large number of relief camps are still functioning out of schools in various districts in the

02:04state.

02:05The donations have slowed down and food rations sometimes fall short for those living in these

02:10camps.
