00:58:05NBA playoffs very excited. Yeah, very excited

00:58:08This is actually great that you're joining us right at this second because I this morning

00:58:12So the Lakers got bounced from the playoffs on Monday night

00:58:15Nuggets win the series four to one the Lakers won one game in the last two years against the Nuggets in the playoffs

00:58:21I've been getting into it with Lakers fans this morning because there's this idea

00:58:26When they show the stat that the Lakers were leading for a hundred and fifty a hundred sixty minutes

00:58:31That the Lakers were right there and now Darvin ham is getting blamed by a lot of Lakers fans

00:58:36I contest that the Lakers did not have a

00:58:41Championship roster that was deep enough that had enough two-way guys that had enough bigs

00:58:46And Darvin ham while you can criticize him and I'm fine criticizing him

00:58:50He was dealt a hand that was very difficult to beat a team like the Nuggets. What do you think about that?

00:58:56Yeah, here's here's the deal. We we we can't ascribe

00:59:04The end result and

00:59:07have that be an indictment on someone without the context of how that result happened and

00:59:14the Denver Nuggets are

00:59:16the defending champion they

00:59:19approach the regular season

00:59:21As well as any defending champion that I can remember going back probably to you know, the the Golden State Warriors

00:59:28With with Steph and KD, right? They approached it trying to get at one seed

00:59:33There's oftentimes a little championship hangover. They were they were rolling. They were healthy, you know

00:59:39Jamal Murray's been banged up for

00:59:42Going on like two months now with shin splints and some calf issues

00:59:46They were healthy relative to what they were in the regular season and it's it's it's not a great matchup for the Lakers and it's

00:59:52Not a great matchup for for anyone really, you know

00:59:55I think this Minnesota team probably matches up as well as anyone in the NBA

01:00:00Versus the Denver Nuggets. I'm really fascinated by this series

01:00:04so to lay the blame on Darvin ham when you're playing against the defending champions and

01:00:14Lose a bunch of close games you lose on to butter buzzer beaters. Like I just I don't buy that

01:00:19I don't buy that now. I'm not in that locker room. I'm not in those huddles

01:00:23So I I can't speak to that. But if we're just basing it on the result of

01:00:29losing in the first round

01:00:31I I just I don't buy that

01:00:33And I want to say one thing real quick because this this has been bothering me for about what time is it 11 o'clock?

01:00:42That last play I do have a problem with that last play the Jamal Murray game winner

01:00:49two guys on the left side of the court for the Nuggets KCP was on the left wing and

01:00:58Torian Prince's man was in the left corner. They basically clear out a side allow the ball to get to get to the middle

01:01:05Roy Hatcher more and Torian Prince. They're literally in no man's land

01:01:09They've overloaded a side you can afford to put Roy Hatcher Mora in help and it looked like Torian Prince was telling him to go there

01:01:16Like is is that on Darvin ham? Right? Is that on Darvin ham? I don't I'm not buying that

01:01:24Like if you're a basketball player at the end of the game, hey Torian Prince guard to stunt for me

01:01:30Let me help on this pick and roll, right?

01:01:32It's that's just basketball and and Hatcher Mora had a great great season him put being in the starting

01:01:38I'm not placing the blame. I'll just not tomorrow. I'm just saying there are certain plays within a game

01:01:44That can decide a game that aren't on the coach. Yeah. Yeah, so so even more though

01:01:49I think and I've heard this in the media

01:01:52People being like well if the Lakers played anyone besides the Nuggets like they're the second best team in the West

01:01:58I just don't think that's true. I think the Thunder are better. I think the Timberwolves are better

01:02:01I just this idea that the Lakers have a championship roster

01:02:05They just ran into the championship team the last two years. I

01:02:09Ad and LeBron were incredible. They were superheroes in this series

01:02:14They just didn't have enough dudes

01:02:16To play against Denver for seven game series or probably play against the Timberwolves or probably play against the Thunder

01:02:22I just I really do think it comes down to their roster wasn't deep enough and they didn't have enough guys that they could

01:02:28rely on

01:02:29who could play two ways and

01:02:31Give it a bunch of different looks and then when you're the coach and you don't have those like

01:02:35You know cards that you can deal out of your hand. It does make you look worse

01:02:39Yeah, that's that's the NBA and that is the danger of going into coaching. Yeah

01:02:45Definitely not that is the danger, right?

01:02:49Talent talent wins depth wins what roster construction how pieces fit all that stuff that that is the ultimate thing and

01:02:57Look it's funny because you look in let's just say regular season D'Angelo Russell had a great year

01:03:03Austin Reeves had a great year Hatcher Moore was more than solid and you had two guys who were gonna make all NBA teams in

01:03:09Anthony Davis and LeBron James, I think some of it

01:03:13Speaks to not only everybody's like the depth of the West the depth of the West

01:03:17Here's my argument for the NBA right now. I think the overall talent depth

01:03:24Meaning the amount of really good players in the NBA is as high as it's ever been and

01:03:31That depth of talent is spread out more than it's ever been

01:03:35There's not the concentration of three really good players on one team three really good players on another team

01:03:40There's the concentration of two or three really good players on a bunch of teams

01:03:45Yeah, so I I don't think this Lakers team was a bad team. Yeah, I just think they were

01:03:50Good relative to the rest of the NBA, it's right. It's good. Not not championship contenders

01:03:56That's kind of what I come down to yes

01:03:57Like you're not the the the the media wants to tell us that the Lakers

01:04:01Were on the cusp of winning a title if they didn't run into the nuggets back to back

01:04:05You're listening to the wrong. You're listening to the wrong media. I mean, that's

01:04:13You're that's where you're not gonna get it

01:05:56Another team I want to talk about so I I think we we we've settled the Lakers like they're a good team

01:06:00They were not a great team. I don't if you put the best coach in the world

01:06:04I still don't think the Lakers are winning the title this year. That was kind of my

01:06:07Semi defensive Darvin him who I don't think is are you playing to the algorithm right now?

01:06:11Are you going to the Lakers algorithm? Yeah, I just I was just crazy to me when it when a team loses and everyone's like

01:06:17The coach has to be fired. It's like but maybe the team wasn't that great

01:06:21I don't know if the best coach in the league could have taken the Lakers and had them beat the Nuggets because the Nuggets right

01:06:27Like the Nuggets in their own way. They're they're a super team, but they're homegrown. So they've got great role players

01:06:31They've got great. They've got star power

01:06:33They've got guys at multiple positions that can go out and get 30 on any given night and then you've got Jokic

01:06:38That's just a piece of a puzzle that you can't you can't solve

01:06:42and I'm actually I'm excited to see what happens in the next round because I think maybe you can educate us on this because I'm

01:06:48Fighting like an internal battle in my brain over which way the Rudy Gobert

01:06:54Jokic matchups going to go on one hand

01:06:56I think that Gobert is such a good defender that they're going to put him one-on-one on Jokic

01:07:02Which could go a couple ways

01:07:04It could have Jokic just go out there and and dominate him because he's not getting help

01:07:09Or it could go like they're going to try to eliminate Jokic's

01:07:14Ability to kick the ball out and hit open threes when you do draw the double team

01:07:18so can you talk us through what that matchup is gonna look like and if the Wolves have a

01:07:22Better chance than most at beating the Nuggets. Yeah

01:07:26so if you go back to last year's playoffs and

01:07:30Games this season a lot of times and and the Wolves now are not the only team that does this but a lot of times

01:07:37Teams will cross match with Jokic

01:07:40Because Denver really wants to score in the paint and it's not necessarily on drives, right? It's out of cuts

01:07:45It's Aaron Gordon in the dunker spot. It's obviously Jokic when he gets a deep catch. It's Jamal Murray Michael Porter jr. On back cuts

01:07:54they're not like a

01:07:56Oklahoma City for example is is

01:07:59Heavy points in the paint team, but they drive 63 times a game

01:08:03They lead the league in drives per game shake shake Gilders. Alexander has the most drives per game in the NBA, right?

01:08:08They drive the basketball

01:08:10Denver wants to be in the paint. They do it a little differently

01:08:12So the counter to that is and it's also to keep Gobert at the rim is you put Carl Anthony Towns on them?

01:08:19you put Nas Reid on him you put Kyle Anderson on them and

01:08:22Gobert can still sit back there and

01:08:25Protect the rim because Aaron Gordon is a non shooting threat a lot of teams if I say this on broadcast all the time

01:08:32It's shot that teams are willing to live with against the Denver Nuggets is an Aaron Gordon three. Mm-hmm. And so that cross match

01:08:40Kind of eliminates some of that need to double because as Jokic gets deeper

01:08:44Gobert is right there at the rim and as

01:08:47He often says he can be in two places at once just like a women Yama, right?

01:08:52These guys are that

01:08:53Smart and that big and that long that they can be in two places at once and still maybe get a late contest

01:08:59But also be there to sort of clean up anything any dumped down passes to Gordon

01:09:03So that's what I would expect Minnesota to do and even going back to last year

01:09:07If you remember that first round series Jamal Murray was incredible as he was throughout the playoffs Jade McDaniels punched a wall

01:09:15The last regular season game so he missed that series. He's an outstanding defender

01:09:20He showed some of that in that Phoenix series in round one

01:09:23So I would expect Jade McDaniels to be on Jamal Murray. No Nas Reid either last year

01:09:28I'm not trying to create an argument for why Minnesota is gonna win

01:09:31I'm creating an argument for why I think this is gonna be high level

01:09:35intense six or seven game series

01:09:38Both these teams are outstanding. Yeah, I'm very excited for that series

01:09:42Another question I had we saw the Suns get bounced in a sweep to the Wolves

01:09:48Are we done with the super teams?

01:09:50Because if you look around like it does feel you have the Nuggets

01:09:55Homegrown you have the Celtics homegrown you have even you know

01:09:59The Knicks have done a really good job with their roster the Wolves

01:10:03Homegrown the Thunder homegrown a lot of these teams now that are ascending feel like you know

01:10:09They've gotten the pieces the long-term way instead of saying. Oh, here's a here's a here's a star

01:10:14Let's add them to the roster and throw away all of our role players

01:10:17Do we think this is finally like the Suns were I saw your whole clip about a failed experiment like they?

01:10:24They're long-term invested in these guys, but I don't know how they don't have a lot of flexibility in changing that roster

01:10:33said at the beginning of the year in in one of our season preview podcasts like this year could be and whether it's like

01:10:41Like stamped meaning it's it's final, but it could be at least the beginning of the death of the super team

01:10:48yeah, part of that is the new second apron in the CBA and just a

01:10:53Sort of a brief explainer of that

01:10:55We have a salary cap you can go to a certain point over the salary cap you pay luxury tax

01:11:00There's a first apron and then a second apron once you get to that second apron. You're essentially hard capped which means

01:11:06You're really limited in what you can do

01:11:09In terms of transactions, so you have no exceptions

01:11:12You basically have to sign players for minimum contracts and sign your own draft picks and obviously the outside of this year

01:11:18The Suns don't have any draft picks from 2025 to 2030 all of those are either traded away, or they

01:11:25They're swapped meaning they can't trade them because teams can swap. Let's say 2027 you can swap with them, right?

01:11:32So they're they're extremely limited

01:11:35by that second apron

01:11:38and it's because of

01:11:40Them going all in on Kevin Durant them going all in on Bradley Beal Bradley Beal has a no trade clause

01:11:47So, yeah, I in some ways

01:11:50The the proof at least to me

01:11:53Over the last few years

01:11:55It goes back to the depth of talent, but the proof to me is you need to build build through the draft

01:12:00And then be positioned with a with a good salary cap situation

01:12:05With good young players with draft picks to then make an impactful trade Denver did that they drafted Jamal Murray. They drafted yokish

01:12:12They drafted Michael Porter jr. They've drafted Peyton Watson

01:12:15They drafted Christian Brown they used players they drafted to go out and get a CP

01:12:23Those are the timely trades and all of a sudden all now all the pieces fit and they've got one of the best if not

01:12:27The best starting five in the NBA. Yeah

01:12:31Boston right Brown drafted Hatem drafted Marcus smart drafted turned him into poor Zingas

01:12:38Rob Williams drafted

01:12:41They they you they stole Malcolm Brogdon from Indiana two years ago

01:12:45They used Malcolm brought in Rob Williams to go get drew holiday. So you you have to draft

01:12:49Well, that's my point. Like if you want to build a team now, you have to draft well

01:12:53so you're but this is why I say it's not necessarily the death of the super team because certain owners are always gonna operate a

01:13:19It's exciting for the NBA that it does feel like we're getting away from that where there aren't the shortcuts and the teams that put

01:13:26In the draft and make the savvy moves and trades are being rewarded like that's good for the league in my opinion

01:13:33I agree, and I think it helps the overall product which the product should be the game. The product should not be transactions. Yes

01:13:41Look people are gonna live in that world

01:13:47The idea of getting this person in free agency the idea of getting this person in a trade I get it

01:13:53It's exciting and everybody plays 2k and everybody likes to build out their rosters and get their packs and get their cards and then decide

01:14:00Which player they're getting rid of like we all want to be a GM in some ways, right? I get it. However

01:14:05because of

01:14:07more parody I thought between parody

01:14:10the depth of talent

01:14:12The rule changes around minimum games played where you had so many guys. I mean LeBron and ad played the most games together. They played

01:14:20In their Lakers tenure Kawhi played more games. He's

01:14:23Since I think 2016 or 2017. So these things have created a better regular season

01:14:30If anyone was paying attention to that instead of just using the same old talking points about how load management does not really exist anymore

01:14:38There's rule you can't rest two stars and in a nationally televised games like the league implemented enough policies those policies worked

01:14:45The in-season tournament was an overall success. The plane has been a massive success
