00:00On Wednesday, the Election Commission took action against former Telangana CM and BRS
00:06chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, barring him from campaigning for 48 hours, effective from 8
00:12pm today.
00:13This decision was made due to derogatory and objectionable statements made by Rao against
00:18the Congress party.
00:19The EC's action followed a complaint filed by Congress leader G. Niranjan, prompting
00:24the Commission to issue a notice to K Chandrasekhar Rao.
00:27The EC noted that Rao had previously received several advisories and instructions regarding
00:32his speeches.
00:33The 48-hour ban imposed on the former Telangana CM came into effect at 8 pm on Wednesday.
00:39Following Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, K Chandrasekhar Rao becomes the second politician
00:43to face a 48-hour ban on campaigning during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
00:48In a letter addressed to KCR, the Election Commission of India stated that his statements
00:52were in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
00:54G. Niranjan, senior vice-president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, alleged
00:58that KCR had made derogatory remarks against the Congress on April 5.
01:02Notably, the Sirsila Assembly constituency is represented by KCR's son, KD Rama Rao.
01:07In response to Niranjan's complaint, the EC had instructed the chief electoral officer
01:11of Telangana to submit a factual report, which was completed on April 10.
01:16The Election Commission received a response from KCR on April 23 to its show-cause notice.
01:21In his response, he stated that the officers in charge of the election in Telangana and
01:25Sirsila are not Telugu people and they hardly understand the local dialect.
01:29He argued that the complaint filed by the Congress had taken some sentences from its
01:33press conference out of context and that the English translation of those sentences was
01:38incorrect and twisted.
01:39KCR also emphasised that his criticism was directed towards the policies and programmes
01:44of the Congress in the state and he did not criticise any personal aspects of Congress
01:48leaders.
01:49However, despite KCR's explanations, the Election Commission cited the Moral Code of
01:53Conduct, which prohibits political leaders from making false statements and utterances
01:58without factual basis aimed at misleading voters.
02:02The EC observed that KCR's statements were in violation of the MCC.
02:06A BRS leader stated that KCR will abide by the EC's direction.
