Delhi-NCR and many other places are witnessing a significant rise in cases of mumps. It is a contagious viral infection primarily affecting children and even some adults. Mumps virus, or paramyxovirus, is transmitted through respiratory droplets or direct contact with an infected person's saliva. The rise in cases is due to crowded living conditions, insufficient vaccination rates and substandard hygiene practices. Mumps can lead to several complications including pancreatitis, meningitis, encephalitis, & myocarditis, especially in those who have not received the vaccine.
