The Avocet: Close Up HD Footage (Recurvirostra avosetta)

One of the most distinctive looking of all waders, the Avocet is a striking black and white bird with an exceptionally long, upturned bill. These coastal and inland wetland birds breed colonially, with both the male and female taking on incubation of the eggs and raising the young chicks. Avocets are well adapted for feeding in shallow waters by sweeping their curved bills through to catch aquatic insects, crustaceans and other small prey items. Many populations are migratory, breeding in temperate regions and wintering further south. After past declines, Avocet numbers have increased following conservation efforts.
