00:00 Northbourne Avenue is one of the busiest traffic commuter roads in Canberra and there are lots
00:05 of bicycles that use it, particularly during standard commuting times.
00:08 But the only protection for bike riders is a narrow white line.
00:13 And this isn't good enough for the safety of bike riders.
00:16 Our proposal is to move the white line into the centre of the road so that there's a dedicated
00:22 lane for cycles and there are two lanes of traffic to continue going back and forth.
00:26 So reducing from three to two is not going to be a problem.
00:30 Traffic lights manage the flow of traffic so people aren't getting on the road and driving
00:33 straight through.
00:35 The idea of reducing from three lanes to two lanes provides people on bicycles and encourages
00:40 more people to get onto bicycles to ride into the city.
00:43 At the moment there are many people who tell us, tell Pedal Power, that they won't ride
00:47 on Northbourne Avenue because it's far too dangerous.
00:50 If we can make it a safer route for people to ride their bikes along then that will mean
00:54 more people riding bicycles, less people in cars and away we go from there.
