Anthony Davis Gives Big Gift To Local Artist On “Thanks A Million”

00:00I'm Melissa Ruhland with Sports Illustrated, and we're here with Jill Painter-Lopez.

00:07Jill, I understand that one of the Lakers was featured on a new show on Quibi.

00:13Anthony Davis was on it.

00:14Tell us a little bit about what he did on the show and what we can take away from it.

00:18Well, Melissa, it's a really heartwarming show called Thanks a Million, in which 10

00:22celebrities, and Anthony Davis is one of them, give $100,000 to somebody that has meant a

00:27lot to them and inspired them.

00:29Well, what A.D. did was he gave the money to a local artist named Gustavo.

00:34He'd never even met him before, but he was so inspired because this artist painted a

00:38mural of him within 24 hours after Davis was traded to the Lakers, and Davis said it did

00:44so much for him.

00:45It made him feel so welcome in the city before he even arrived.

00:48He said seeing himself in a Lakers uniform on that mural was really inspiring to him,

00:53and you could tell it meant so much to Gustavo.

00:56He was obviously very surprised to meet Anthony Davis, and the premise of the show is to keep

01:00it going forward.

01:01So Anthony told him, you know what you need to do?

01:04Half of this money is for you, $50,000.

01:06The other $50,000 you have to give to somebody who is meaningful and inspired you.

01:10He then gave it to the manager of Hoagie's Sandwich Shop in Venice, and then that man

01:15then gave it to a leader in the LGBTQ community, and it just keeps going, paying forward.

01:21So Anthony Davis started that chain today, and you can see that on the Quibi app.

01:27Jill, I know I've had a similar effect on you.

01:30Can I be expecting that $100,000 soon?

01:32Well, if you give the other half back to me, of course.
