00:00 I'm Jill Painter Lopez for Sports Illustrated joined by Melissa Roland who recently had
00:05 a conversation with NBA photographer Andrew Bernstein.
00:09 What came out of that?
00:10 He's a Hall of Fame photographer who's been covering the NBA for 40 years.
00:14 He covered all of Kobe Bryant's five NBA championships and each of Michael Jordan's six titles.
00:20 So he's a really fascinating guy.
00:22 He's been behind the scenes witnessing a lot of their intimate moments.
00:26 He's the one behind the lens who has taken a lot of those extremely iconic photos throughout
00:30 the year.
00:31 Remember that photo of Michael Jordan clutching his first NBA championship trophy in 1991
00:37 while weeping with his father next to him.
00:39 He's captured so many iconic moments of Kobe Bryant.
00:42 It was interesting.
00:43 He also told a lot of really, really revealing stories about both of them, including he talked
00:50 about the first time he met Kobe.
00:51 It was during media day in 1996.
00:55 He met the young 18 year old and he held out his hand to introduce himself.
00:59 And Kobe said, I know who you are.
01:02 And Andrew Bernstein thought he was a smart ass.
01:04 I mean, nobody recognizes the photographers.
01:07 And Kobe said, no, literally, I know who you are.
01:10 I have your posters hanging all throughout my bedroom.
01:13 And I've studied them carefully.
01:15 And Andrew Bernstein was shocked because, you know, nobody reads the photo credits on
01:19 posters.
01:21 And so that was really revealing.
01:22 It showed just how much Kobe paid attention, just how much he studied everything.
