00:00 I'm Jill Painter Lopez for Sports Illustrated joined by Melissa Rowland and Melissa Shaquille
00:10 O'Neal talked to the New Orleans Saints following Drew Brees's comments of course about kneeling
00:16 during the national anthem for which he apologized.
00:19 What did Shaq say to the Saints?
00:21 Well Shaq actually was already previously scheduled to be on a video call with the Saints
00:26 and he ended up going on that call and obviously a lot of news had arisen since Drew Brees was
00:31 under a lot of fire for saying he would never support NFL players kneeling during the national
00:36 anthem something that a lot of people around the nation including a lot of his teammates
00:41 took offense to.
00:43 So Shaq was on the call and he encouraged the Saints not to let the media divide them
00:48 like they divided him and Kobe Bryant.
00:51 Obviously Shaq and Kobe won three NBA championships together from 2000 to 2002.
00:57 They were an incredible dynamic incredibly strong pairing but they always had issues
01:02 as teammates and I know Shaq believes that a lot of that was spurred or fostered or continued
01:08 on by the media.
01:09 So he was basically saying it obviously ended with him leaving the Lakers and breaking up
01:15 obviously that incredible duo.
01:17 So I think Shaq's message was just trying to encourage the Saints not to let what happened
01:23 to the Lakers happen to them.
