In February, Patrick Mahomes was coming off a Super Bowl win and at the height of his young career. But, as 2020 continued, Mahomes created a more profound impact off the field, setting an example for the social justice movement and forcing the NFL to recognize racial injustices, as well as their new face of the league.

00:06 This season, the adversity we deal with, I mean, my knee was in the side of my leg.
00:11 [MUSIC]
00:19 But we still went back and we won the Super Bowl, we're the champs, baby.
00:23 >> Ladies and gentlemen, the MVP of Super Bowl 54,
00:30 Kevin Burroughs.
00:33 >> To be on that field, the confetti coming down,
00:35 it was really an amazing feeling that I'll have for the rest of my life.
00:39 [MUSIC]
00:40 The city of Kansas City and how they've accepted me to be the person that I am,
00:45 and they've really embraced me.
00:47 It seems like it was four years ago now, and
00:49 it kind of led me into the rest of this offseason of trying to.
00:53 Use my voice to make the world a better place.
00:55 >> We, the National Football League.
00:57 >> Believe black lives matter.
00:59 You go out and show your voice, and
01:01 I think that's the advice I would give to anyone in this world.
01:04 I think my role is still growing.
01:07 [MUSIC]
01:11 >> We do not have to do anything else other than being ourselves.
01:15 I truly believe that.
01:16 If we just be ourselves and trust in each other, we will go down there,
01:19 we can put points out, we can do what we do.
01:21 Don't try to go out here and do everything for yourself.
01:23 Believe in your teammate.
01:24 >> Let's do it. >> You know what I mean?
01:25 Believe in each other.
01:26 And we'll get these opportunities, we'll go down,
01:28 we'll find a way to win the game.
01:30 Let's do it right here, man.
01:30 >> Move on, let's get him up.
01:31 >> You wanna use your voice, but I'd never been on that platform before.
01:34 I've used my voice to that extent.
01:37 Michael Thomas was the first one to reach out to me, and he just reached out and
01:40 said he had this idea that we could use our voice together and
01:45 show the support that we had for the movement that was going on.
01:48 And we did that, we used our voice and we just went out there and
01:52 we told the world how we felt.
01:55 >> It's been ten days since George Floyd was brutally murdered.
01:58 >> How many times do we need to ask you to listen to your players?
02:02 >> What will it take?
02:03 >> What if I was George Floyd?
02:05 >> If I was George Floyd.
02:06 >> If I was George Floyd.
02:07 >> If I was George Floyd.
02:09 >> NFL players are speaking out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
02:14 In a powerful video shared to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback
02:17 Patrick Mahomes' Twitter account.
02:19 >> I've been given this platform and I wanna make sure that I can do whatever I
02:22 can to make the world a better place in whichever way that is.
02:25 We believe that Black Lives Matter and that we believe that this needs to
02:31 be informed and we need to be the role models to go out there and take that step.
02:34 >> What would you say to the stick the sports crowd?
02:38 >> Yeah, I would just say that you have to believe that we are people too.
02:42 And I feel like those people have kids and
02:45 they understand that their kids can play sports and
02:48 their kids can possibly be in the same position that we're in.
02:50 And they would want their kids to show their heart and show who they truly are and
02:55 try to affect the world in the most positive way possible.
02:57 And that's what we believe that we're doing.
03:00 >> There's a lot of talk made about him being the face of the NFL.
03:03 I sure hope so.
03:04 Just everything he just said, I'm so here for him.
03:06 I'm proud of him.
03:11 >> The message we wanted to send the sports world was that we're players.
03:15 I mean, we're people first and not just the players on the field,
03:19 not just the athletes that y'all love to watch.
03:21 We're people and that we have families and
03:23 we have people that have been in these situations before.
03:26 I think the support that we've gotten from a lot of the people that have been
03:29 around us, it shows that they truly understand that now and they truly are
03:33 gonna do whatever they can to support us as much as they do on the field,
03:37 as they're gonna do in the community.
03:38 We the National Football League admit we were wrong for
03:41 not listening to NFL players earlier.
03:43 I personally protest with you and
03:45 want to be part of the much needed change in this country.
03:49 >> The video, it really just opened the conversation to not only the players and
03:53 amongst players around this league, but to the organizations.
03:56 And we've been able to keep that conversation going.
03:59 I've talked to the owners of our team, the head guys in the organization,
04:04 the head women in the organization of our team.
04:06 And I've also talked to Roger Goodell and they are truly supporting us and
04:10 are behind us on going out and making this world a better place and
04:13 making our communities better places.
04:14 >> The NFL has made a monetary commitment to match their words,
04:18 as the league will donate $250 million to fight systemic racism.
04:22 >> The Kansas City Board of Elections partnered with Patrick's 15 and
04:25 the Mahomes Foundation to really make all of this come together.
04:28 And Mahomes and the Chiefs,
04:30 they actually purchased all of the machines that voters used yesterday.
04:35 Several folks also told me that they said it was the best voting experience they
04:39 ever had.
04:40 >> I've always said I want the legacy of me to be a champion,
04:43 not only on the field, but off of it as well.
04:45 That takes steady, persistent, consistent drive every single day to not only
04:52 be great in the locker room, be great in the film room, but be great in the community
04:56 as well, and I'll continue to build and build and
04:59 find the best way that I can make an impact in this world.
05:02 Your voice matters.
05:03 I think that's the biggest thing for me.
05:05 Go out, follow your dreams.
05:07 No matter what people say, no matter who goes against you,
05:11 follow your dreams and do it with all your heart, and usually good stuff happens.
05:15 That's what I've done my entire life.
05:17 I've just fought, worked hard, and done whatever I can to try to make an impact
05:21 in this world, and I'm gonna continue to do that as my life goes on.
