00:00NFL reporter Jay Glazer teases fans only to have a major letdown.
00:05Coronavirus cases is now over 2 million worldwide, and the NFL warns incoming rookies about what
00:11not to do on draft night.
00:14Here are the stories shaping sports and business on this Thursday, April 16th.
00:23Welcome I'm Catherine Ross of The Street alongside Sports Illustrated's Bill Enright.
00:26Bill, break down the first story for me.
00:28Alright Catherine, so Fox Sports NFL reporter Jay Glazer teased his followers about a breaking
00:34news story for about 36 hours.
00:37There was a lot of speculation about what the report would be.
00:41Is the NFL draft going to get postponed?
00:43Is Odell Beckham Jr. going to get traded?
00:46Turns out it was none of those things, and the actual Glazer breaking news exclusive
00:51story was regarding Ram Center Brian Allen testing positive for COVID-19.
00:57Glazer said that Allen was the first player in the NFL to test positive for the coronavirus.
01:03The problem is, that wasn't the first player that tested positive.
01:07Mitchell Rents, who covers the Raiders, actually reported that Las Vegas linebacker Quentin
01:13Pollock and his daughter and his wife all tested positive for COVID-19 about a month
01:19ago back on March 17th.
01:21Now Glazer again teased his fans for about a full day.
01:25The video of that report has over 745,000 views on Twitter, 2,500 replies, a majority
01:33of which are really blasting Glazer for leading his followers on regarding what he deemed
01:39an exclusive breaking news story that turned out was neither.
01:44Now remember, Glazer is one of the best in the industry when it comes to breaking news
01:50for NFL.
01:51So fans were really expecting something big.
01:53But as we've seen without sports on TV, it's becoming increasingly difficult and a little
01:58bit of a struggle for reporters to make sure that they capture their audience's attention.
02:03So I'm going to give Glazer a pass here, but I do want to point out that Mitchell Rents
02:08had the first report of a NFL player having coronavirus with Quentin Pollock.
02:15No sports is making media very tough.
02:17All right, so let's go ahead and give you your coronavirus update for the day.
02:20There are now over 2 million cases of the virus worldwide and over 139,000 deaths per
02:26data from Johns Hopkins.
02:28The U.S. has over 640,000 cases of the virus with over 26,000 deaths.
02:32New York has 222,000 cases with over 12,000 fatalities per data from the New York State
02:38Department of Health's website.
02:40And Spain has 182,000 cases with over 19,000 deaths.
02:44And Italy has over 165,000 cases with over 21,000 deaths.
02:49New York has extended its shutdown of non-essential businesses to May 15th, and Governor Andrew
02:53Cuomo has said that other East Coast states will follow suit.
02:57Switching over to the economy, jobless claims data came in at 5.2 million.
03:02This means, Bill, that there are around 22 million Americans who are unemployed in the
03:06country as of right now.
03:09So Bill, what else is happening today?
03:1022 million, that is such a high number.
03:14People that will not be employed are NFL draft incoming rookies are all going to be leaving
03:18college and joining the professional workforce as they get drafted on April 23rd when the
03:24first round kicks off.
03:26But the NFL is warning these rookies about product placement for the NFL draft broadcast.
03:32A memo from the NFL sent to about 58 draft prospects scheduled to make an appearance
03:38on this virtual broadcast included some do's and don'ts of what to do.
03:44They did not want to have any products being displayed or logos that was not approved by
03:50the NFL within kind of a camera viewing of their situation room or their living room,
03:56wherever they're going to be when they get drafted.
03:58The memo also included information about clothing and wearing certain logos citing players can
04:03only wear NFL team official league partner and accessories.
04:08It also gave instructions on looking, quote, clean and prohibited any political statements
04:14or references to drugs or gambling within their vicinity of the camera.
04:20That is, of course, according to Action Network's Darren Rovell.
04:23The players will receive a welcome kit that includes Pepsi company products like Frito-Lay
04:28chips and Mars candy.
04:30Remember, Catherine, the draft was originally scheduled to take place in Las Vegas.
04:35The would be grand spectacle of the NFL draft is now going to be a virtual broadcast with
04:41players and broadcasters appearing via webcams from their homes.
04:46Clearly, the NFL really wants to protect some of their sponsorship partners, which include
04:52Nike, Under Armour, Pepsi company, just to name a few.
04:57So let's talk about that a little bit more.
04:58So PepsiCo is actually holding in Jim Cramer's Action Alerts Plus portfolio.
05:04This company, the stock is up around to $135 a share.
05:08It's up around 6% in the past year.
05:11And while you may not see a Ralph Lauren polo in this Nike draft, you will probably see
05:15a Nike polo.
05:16Nike is trading around $85.
05:19It's down around 4% in the past year.
05:21And then there's Under Armour.
05:23Under Armour currently trades around $9, and it's down around 58% in the past year.
05:27It's been kind of a rough year for Under Armour.
05:30Yeah, sounds like it.
05:31All right, Bill, thank you so much for joining us today.
05:34I'm Catherine Ross of The Street alongside Sports Illustrated's Bill Enright.
