SI's Bri Amaranthus and Chris Halicke discuss who could be the next breakout player for the Texas Rangers.
Transcript
00:00The coronavirus has kept us waiting and waiting and waiting for MLB to get started for 2020,
00:06but that doesn't mean we're not excited. It's just actually kind of building up, right?
00:10Right, Chris? When you say we're ready for baseball, that's for sure.
00:14That's for sure. Okay, so when you look at the Texas Rangers and the upcoming season,
00:18whenever it gets started, hopefully July, who do you think is posed for a breakout season
00:24or somebody that fans should keep an eye on?
00:27My favorite right now would probably be Willie Calhoun. He stepped in whenever Joey Gallo went
00:32down last year with the hammock bone injury, and he played really, really well. He hit the ball
00:38really well. He was a 269 hitter. He had 21 home runs in 83 games. We already knew he could hit.
00:47The fielding was a part that he's still kind of working on, but he worked on that throughout the
00:52offseason and working on that first step. I really like him as a player, just as a baseball player.
00:59He's probably not going to blow you away in any one particular area, but he's so good in a variety
01:06of ways that I just think being an all-around player, he would be the real big candidate for
01:11me for a breakout player. Also, not to mention, because he's my pick as well, I think it's going
01:17to be interesting to see how he comes back from the jaw injury because I'm sure that made him,
01:22that video of his. It's terrible. Oh, it was so terrible. Yeah, the sound was just, it was
01:29bone-chilling. It was a terrible sound. Watching the game live, it was just terrible.
01:35It's just, it's really, really good that he's been able to come back. He's been cleared for
01:39baseball activity, so he's been able to swing the bat and do baseball-related stuff now.
01:43So whenever baseball does get started up again, he will be ready to go, barring any kind of
01:48setbacks or conditioning issues or anything, but that's something that all baseball players are
01:52going to have to be dealing with right now. Well, I guess then the coronavirus-induced
01:56halt of the sports world actually kind of helped Willie out a little bit. Absolutely.
