00:22 >> Firstly, Sean, congratulations.
00:24 >> Thank you.
00:25 >> [Inaudible]
00:25 >> I'm pleased, obviously, delighted actually
00:31 with the performance of our players against a top side.
00:34 They are a top side, we know that.
00:35 I'm delighted for the Evertonians,
00:38 delighted for the old school Toffees as well who support us
00:42 because people do forget amongst all the question marks,
00:45 there's a lot of people when I'm out and around here,
00:47 you know, they do understand some of the challenges we've had
00:49 and they do come up to me and say, "Listen,
00:50 don't listen to all that.
00:51 We know what you're doing.
00:52 We know you're trying to work hard
00:53 to change all the storylines and all that."
00:55 So thank you for them for listening
00:57 and I thought they were terrific again tonight.
00:59 They were terrific Sunday.
01:00 After a really tough week for me, the team and for the fans,
01:03 you know, I'd only asked them to stay connected.
01:06 I said, "Look, just give us your lot.
01:07 We'll try and give it back."
01:08 And we have done and I'm pleased for the club at large really.
01:12 Only second winning in 30, I'm told, so very pleased.
01:15 >> I've got a question, I was going to get to just last week.
01:18 We're talking about the aftermath of that Chelsea game
01:20 and obviously, it's difficult conversations at Pinch Farm
01:22 in the aftermath of that, to go from that low to this high.
01:25 Do you have a surprise for us?
01:26 >> Well, I mean, I've spoken endlessly and you've all heard it.
01:30 You know, when I got here, the negativity
01:33 around the whole club and the situation.
01:35 Some of the clubs I've been up to with different things to that,
01:39 of course, but we've been trying endlessly.
01:42 You know, I've been talking about changing the narrative
01:43 and we get, you know, we get close and then just
01:46 as we change it, we get the points taken off.
01:48 Then we just begin the process, we get another couple
01:50 of points taken off, then we have a bad result and it just,
01:53 you know, waves back on top, the wave just crashes back on top of you.
01:57 So, I suppose we go about how do we deal with that?
01:59 Well, there's only us that can deal with it, you know,
02:01 but we're the only ones because football, whatever you think of it,
02:03 the clubs can do what they want across the country.
02:06 It starts on the pitch, it always starts on the pitch
02:08 and that's what makes football work.
02:10 So, it's our challenge to get it right.
02:11 We've restarted the process.
02:13 It's not a done deal.
02:14 There's still, I said last week, there's endless amounts
02:17 of work to be done here, trust me.
02:18 I've been trying to wade my way through it with others, not just me,
02:21 trying to sort of balance it all out a little bit.
02:25 There's still loads to go, but the last two games have been a real,
02:29 a real, what's the word, a forceful show of a reaction to a group.
02:37 You know, the noise, you don't care.
02:39 Of course we care.
02:40 How would you not care?
02:41 How can you do my job and not care?
02:42 It's impossible.
02:43 How are your staff?
02:44 It's impossible to not care.
02:45 It's impossible as a player to not care.
02:47 There might be moments when you get questions about how do you react?
02:50 And the reaction has been fantastic from all concerned.
02:52 The staff, the players, the fans as well.
02:55 Where was that game won tonight?
02:57 Sorry?
02:57 Where was that game won tonight for you?
02:59 I think it was won in the tactical delivery of the team.
03:03 You know, we get questions on that.
03:05 I said recently, you know, sometimes the tactics are right, it's the delivery.
03:07 The delivery was excellent, I thought.
03:08 You know, we know they have possession.
03:10 It's very rare they don't.
03:12 We know they can hurt you in different ways with their tempo on transition.
03:16 They can still find moments, which they did.
03:17 And Jordan made a couple of big saves.
03:19 They had one that cannoned off the inside of the post.
03:21 But I thought the performance and the level of performance was top draw.
03:27 I thought, you know, the commitment physically to do the hard yards,
03:30 but also the shape and, you know, the concentration and focus to do the
03:34 the hard part of the game.
03:35 Everyone wants to play the beautiful stuff.
03:36 Of course they do.
03:37 Make no mistake, whether I get questions or not is irrelevant.
03:39 I want to play beautiful football if I can, but I want to play winning football.
03:42 That comes first.
03:44 And that's where I thought was on show tonight.
03:46 A group that really put their lot on the line to win a game.
03:48 Yeah, really pleased.
03:51 You know, the biggest challenge of all, I commended them, obviously.
03:54 Not just, you know, the reaction rather than just tonight.
03:57 I mean, it means a lot to the club and the people who work here and the fans, of course.
04:01 But not just that, but the reaction.
04:05 It's the recent news, the reaction from a group of people who say, right, come on,
04:08 let's get our nose pointed in the right direction.
04:09 All of us.
04:10 We spoke about it endlessly.
04:11 Said anyone's not on board, come and see me.
04:13 No one can see me.
04:14 I remind them of that.
04:15 I said, well, that's a good sign.
04:16 They've got to deliver tonight.
04:17 But the next challenge is, I've just said to them, can we go and do it again then?
04:21 So that's the next challenge.
04:22 I said it doesn't stop just because this big result.
04:25 So I said we're coming tomorrow.
04:26 We get ready and we go again and that'll be the challenge.
04:28 So the Saturday comes around, we're ready to go again.
04:30 Yeah, first class.
04:36 I said to him afterwards that that sort of performance,
04:38 if you can get that consistency of that performance,
04:40 that's what gets people talking about you.
04:42 That's what gets you around that England team again,
04:44 because that's a first class performance against top players, topside,
04:48 the hold up play, the controlled aggression to his play,
04:52 the commitment to get hold of the ball and fight for it.
04:54 But also his finishing.
04:56 I mean, I love the one, I think Jarrod gets it in the end, doesn't he?
04:59 But he's sprinting on the line to just toe it in.
05:01 I love that. That's what you want from strikers.
05:03 You want them to be hungry to score goals.
05:04 So that's a sign when he's on top.
05:06 That's a sign for me when he's active.
05:08 You know, going in there on a maybe, can he just get it over the line?
05:11 I love that.
05:12 And then his header is a fantastic header and a great set piece as well.
05:15 And Jordan showing you that in the morning?
05:18 Yeah, particularly the first half, second half, just some control, good hands.
05:21 But the first half, I thought, you know, two very important saves
05:25 and, you know, rare breaches of our defence.
05:27 I thought the defensive unit from the front to the back, by the way,
05:29 I don't just mean the back sort of five with a goalie.
05:32 I thought that was excellent.
05:33 The commitment, the midfield, the pressing, recovering,
05:35 you know, all the hard yards was intact.
05:38 And I thought it was a very, very good, Young is welcoming.
05:40 I think it's a really tough one to come on into.
05:42 I thought it was excellent second half, without a doubt.
05:44 And the fans enjoyed the last ten minutes. Were you able to enjoy as well?
05:47 That's a different kind of enjoyment.
05:49 I don't get too excited about these things.
05:51 This is for the people.
05:54 Well, you know, ten days ago, people were telling me I don't know what I'm doing.
05:56 Ten days later, they say, you do know what you're doing.
05:58 Then that's my job. That's the way it goes.
05:59 You know, so I internally enjoy it, though.
06:02 Make no mistake, I internally enjoy nights like tonight.
06:04 But this one's definitely for the club and for the fans, without a doubt.
06:08 Paddy?
06:09 Shaun, the team's been so strong with set-pieces throughout the season.
06:18 Why do you think they dominated again so much tonight?
06:22 I think we've helped play our part in instilling the belief in the importance of them,
06:27 a belief in the work, the staff, by the way, massive credit to them.
06:31 I don't do the set-pieces.
06:33 I know what they are, but I don't do them.
06:35 The staff analyse them. They work on them.
06:38 They put the team through them, and it's them that deserve credit for that side of things.
06:41 And, you know, that's a big part of football.
06:44 Why wouldn't you use them? We've always believed in it.
06:46 And today shows why, really, because it's a tight game.
06:50 They're a top side.
06:52 How can you open them?
06:53 How can you affect it when you don't have so much of the ball?
06:56 So therefore, you've got to break the play, which I thought we did on many occasions.
06:59 And you've got to find the moments.
07:00 And why not use set-pieces to be one of their moments?
07:02 I thought we looked a threat all night again.
07:04 How much do you tweak game to game?
07:07 I mean, tonight, for example, it seemed like Jared and Tarkovsky in particular were fine.
07:12 Yeah, I'm not going to tell you that, am I?
07:14 Because that would be ridiculous.
07:15 Will?
07:19 Check on Michael Ankle, Sean?
07:22 Yeah, we'll know more tomorrow, but he's soldiering on for staff, bless him,
07:27 and half-time, he's an ankle, by the way, but we won't know more until tomorrow.
07:33 Sean, could it be more satisfying now that you've got the power of a junior?
07:35 You know what, would you?
07:36 It's not as satisfying as the last game of the last season.
07:40 Simple as that, you know, because that was the job, staying in the Premier League.
07:45 It's satisfying for different reasons.
07:47 It's satisfying for the people.
07:48 I mean it sincerely.
07:49 I'm second in 30 and all that.
07:51 You know, that's about the people.
07:52 It's about the people who grew up, the Evertonians, the new Evertonians,
07:55 the people who work at the club.
07:56 It's satisfying in that way, to give something back.
07:59 And it's more satisfying when you've been heavily questioned.
08:01 I think that's satisfying in a different way, not for me, for my staff, for the team as well.
08:05 But no, it's a different kind of satisfaction.
08:08 Last game of last season, that's satisfaction, trust me.
08:10 Any further questions?
08:13 No? OK.
08:16 Thanks, everyone. Cheers.
08:18 Thanks.
08:19 Thanks.
08:20 Thanks.
