00:00 Anne Hathaway is opening up about her gross auditioning experience in the 2000s
00:04 after being asked to kiss 10 guys for a chemistry read.
00:08 The actress told V Magazine, "I was told, 'We have 10 guys coming today in your cast.
00:12 Aren't you excited to make out with all of them?' And I thought, 'Is there something wrong with me?'
00:16 Because I wasn't excited. She didn't specify what project the audition was for. I thought
00:21 it sounded gross. And I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being
00:26 labeled difficult. So I just pretended I was excited and got on with it." Hathaway said,
00:30 "This was considered normal during the early 2000s. It was just a very different time,
00:35 and now we know better." So for her new film, The Idea of You, in which Hathaway serves as a
00:39 producer, she conducted her chemistry read a bit differently. "We asked each of the actors coming in
00:44 to choose a song that they felt their character would love, that they would put on to get my
00:48 character to dance, and then we'd do a short little improv." The Idea of You, based on the
00:52 2017 novel of the same name, tells the story of a 40-year-old single mom who falls for a 24-year-old
00:58 international pop star played by Nicholas Galatine. During his audition, the actor picked a
01:03 song by the Alabama Shakes. "It was just easy. I heard Britney's voice and I just started smiling.
01:08 And he saw me smile, so he relaxed. And we just started dancing. I looked over and Michael
01:12 Showalter, our director, was beaming. Spark." The film hits Prime Video on May 2. "What is that song?"
01:19 "It's nothing, really." "I like it." For more on this story, head to THR.com. And for the
