God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla - Sparring with Týr | PS5 & PS4 Games
Introduced first in God of War (2018) as a figure of legend, Týr’s role in the Norse saga evolved from myth to mentor in God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla. We’re celebrating the sixth anniversary of God of War (2018) with the DLC Co-Directors Bruno Velazquez and Mihir Sheth as they talk about how the Týr’s lore as a world traveler in the first Norse game inspired his fighting styles in Valhalla and more!

00:02 So one of the biggest surprises for Valhalla was who invited Kratos, right?
00:17 Why is Kratos there?
00:18 He got this mysterious invitation, and when you get to the top of Valhalla,
00:22 you discover that it's none other than Tyr.
00:25 The invitation was yours.
00:29 I would have signed it, but it was important you come here for your own reasons.
00:33 Right from the beginning, we knew that Tyr was going to be your ultimate test.
00:38 When you play Ragnarok and you meet Tyr for the first time,
00:42 you think you're going to fight this character.
00:43 You see them standing up, you know, Tyr is so intimidating.
00:46 And then, you know, in typical Santa Monica fashion,
00:49 we change expectations and we subvert them.
00:52 But I think a lot of people kind of play that game, they're like,
00:55 "What if Kratos and Tyr sparted out?"
00:58 And we wanted to dig into that and really like figuring out how does Tyr fight?
01:03 What's that relationship? Because they are sparring.
01:06 It's a very different relationship than we've ever seen Kratos, you know,
01:09 fight against someone else.
01:10 Yeah.
01:11 And Tyr kind of bringing this almost worldly knowledge from all the places he's visited, right?
01:15 Well, that was one of the things we really wanted to do with Tyr,
01:18 to showcase how he, the history behind him traveling to all these different places, right?
01:22 So that's why we have these different weapons that he brings out from different locations in the world.
01:27 Yeah, those intros.
01:28 Every time I saw the animations for the intros where he's pulling out the different weapon,
01:32 as soon as that started coming online, we were like, we were getting pretty hyped about it.
01:35 If you notice for folks that have a keen ear,
01:39 they will hear some slightly different tunes when each weapon is introduced
01:43 that is kind of tied to the weapon as well.
01:46 And then his styles of combat change.
01:48 I think you'll enjoy it, if that's the word.
01:52 The gameplay mechanics actually are influenced by the region that he's kind of bringing to each part of the fight.
01:58 We also play around with some mechanics that are a bit different than fights that you would have in the base game.
02:05 And ultimately it's like two God of Wars going at each other, right?
02:08 Exactly. So that's one of the biggest things is that when you think about the whole franchise,
02:12 Kratos has only, even though it's called God of War, he's only confronted Ares, another God of War.
02:16 Not until now has he had an opportunity to go and fight it out with another God of War.
02:22 Yes, a completely different context, right?
02:24 Whereas with Ares it was about a completely different thing, revenge.
02:28 Now this is more about personal growth and challenging himself to master himself,
02:32 to get him to the next step in his life,
02:34 which is a super exciting way to reframe this epic battle with another God of War, right?
02:39 That was distinct, but at the same time brings it full circle.
02:45 Every time you beat him, right? And you press Archery, you kind of go up,
02:49 and you got that moment where the punch gets caught and then they get to do the arm shake again.
02:54 That was completely intentional. We wanted to do the reverse of what happened in Ragnarok,
02:58 where Tyr is helping Kratos up, and now Kratos is the one helping Tyr up.
03:02 Tyr was definitely a lot of fun to bring to life, and hopefully all of you enjoy fighting him.
