00:00:00 We don't know.
00:00:01 We might have gotten accidentally a Moneyline Turtle.
00:00:03 Tortoise.
00:00:04 Is it tortoise?
00:00:05 He's a Russian tortoise.
00:00:06 All tortoises are turtles.
00:00:08 So can we say tortoise?
00:00:09 Is that true?
00:00:10 So Max told me.
00:00:11 Oh well, Max told you that.
00:00:13 All tortoises are turtles?
00:00:16 Where'd you find that out?
00:00:18 No, no, no.
00:00:23 On today's part of my take, we have a twofer for the people, a great NBA preview for the
00:00:30 playoffs.
00:00:31 We have head coach of the Denver Nuggets, Mike Malone, who we had on last year.
00:00:35 Great guy, great interview.
00:00:37 Michael Malone.
00:00:38 Michael Malone.
00:00:39 I already fucked it up.
00:00:40 Michael Malone.
00:00:41 We said we would protect him.
00:00:42 And then we also have head coach of the Boston Celtics, Joe Mazzuola, who I'll just say must
00:00:47 list an interview because he won us all over.
00:00:50 He's the man.
00:00:51 We're going to talk play-ins.
00:00:53 We're going to get Hank's draft big board.
00:00:57 He actually came through with it.
00:00:59 Just QBs?
00:01:00 QB big board.
00:01:01 I thought it was top 10.
00:01:03 No.
00:01:04 It was top 10.
00:01:05 I was replacing Billy's QB bracket.
00:01:07 Oh, okay.
00:01:08 All right.
00:01:09 So we're going to get his QB big board.
00:01:10 He's watched the film.
00:01:11 We got Fyre Fest and we're going to do a redemption pick with Mr. Pair, the worst gambler of all

00:03:50 Hey, football guy.
00:03:51 Hey, football guy.
00:03:52 Hey, football guy.
00:03:53 Hey, football guy.
00:03:54 Hey, football guy.
00:03:55 Hey, football guy.
00:03:56 Hey, football guy.
00:03:57 Hey, football guy.
00:03:58 Hey, football guy.
00:03:59 Hey, football guy.
00:04:00 Hey, football guy.
00:04:01 followed up with one of the weirdest things ever. When he said, okay, we'll start doing
00:04:07 that to me and we'll get along just fine. And then, and then he then he wrote a column
00:04:13 on it and then he apologized in his column with maybe a weirder column. Now it wasn't
00:04:18 as weird as the hard thing, but it was almost as weird in the column. He was, it was just
00:04:22 all about him and how weird he is. So I'm going to read just part of it for you here.
00:04:26 He said, what happened was the most me thing ever in one way. By the way, right off the
00:04:32 bat, like him saying, well, that's just, that's just kind of who I am. I'm just Greg being
00:04:38 Greg. That's all. He says, I'm sort of known locally, comma, sigh, comma, writing, writing
00:04:44 out the word sigh. I'm sort of known locally sigh for having awkward conversations with
00:04:50 people before asking brashly conversational questions. That's his problem. The conversation
00:04:57 was too brashly controversial. No conversational conversational questions. Brashly conversational.
00:05:03 Yeah. Brashly conversational. Good character trait to have for a reporter. By the way,
00:05:08 I've done this for years with Colts coaches, Chuck Pagano, Frank Reich, and Shane Stikin.
00:05:12 I've done it with Purdue players, Carson Edwards and Zach Eady. I did it with I use Romeo Langford
00:05:17 talking to them as people, not as athletes. Notice something about all those names. Um,
00:05:23 they all people, they're all people. They're all men. Oh shit. So he doesn't know how to
00:05:30 talk to a woman. I think that that part was clear. Oh, we didn't need, yeah, we didn't
00:05:34 need you to write a column that you don't know how to talk to a woman. And then he said
00:05:37 that he went through all the stages of grief. Excuse me. The first two stages of grief after
00:05:41 this happened. Okay. Uh, mourning his own passing on as a, an interviewer, I guess.
00:05:48 Brashly conversational. He said, he said, denial. I didn't do anything wrong. I gave
00:05:51 Caitlyn her signature heart shaped hand gesture as a way of introducing myself and welcoming
00:05:55 her to town. I did this during a nationally televised press conference. What kind of idiot
00:05:59 acts creepy on national television me. And then he was in anger and he said, this is
00:06:04 how I talk to everyone. This is how I, uh, this is the male equivalent would be talking
00:06:09 to Anthony Richardson. I'd have shown him the heart gesture and reiterated, I like that
00:06:14 you're here. And then, but then don't worry. He had a conversation with a woman. Oh, thank
00:06:20 God. So he talked to him a woman, Greg Doyle. He talked to a woman, uh, someone that he
00:06:24 trusts that's close to him. And they told him that you can't talk that way to a young
00:06:28 woman. There's a line and he crossed it. I now realize what I said and how I said it
00:06:33 was wrong, wrong, wrong. I mean, it was just wrong. Caitlyn Clark. I'm so sorry. Oh, you
00:06:39 know what the craziest part is? He had another P part in that press conference that was almost
00:06:44 equally as cringeworthy where he asked the Indiana fever head coach, he said, so you
00:06:49 get the keys to that. What are you going to do with it? You'll be able to drive that.
00:06:54 I mean it was, that was like, that would have led every story, but then he obviously did
00:06:59 the heart thing. Do that. What was it? Wait. Okay. We'll start doing that to me and we'll
00:07:04 get along just fine. He asked the coach like that might be too much woman for you. You
00:07:09 have a key set that damn what I would take that thing out for a spin. It was, it was
00:07:14 very strange. Although it did make me think that when the bears draft Caleb Williams,
00:07:17 you should go to his press conference and show your fingernails. Yeah. And be like, you
00:07:21 like that? Be like, if you come, if you come cry in my arms after a loss, we'll be just
00:07:25 fine. If you paint my fingernails, Caleb will, we'll get along just fine. The, so it's obviously
00:07:30 not the worst thing that's been done. It's probably the most cringeworthy thing that's
00:07:32 been done. But the problem with Greg Doyle is he is a, one of the captains of the scold
00:07:37 Kings online. So when you're a scold King and you mess up, we get to dunk on you, buddy.
00:07:44 We get to dunk on you over and over and over and over again. And it, it was great because
00:07:50 you're a fucking idiot. And that was so cringeworthy. You like that? Do more of that. What he should
00:07:55 have done. He should just disassociate himself from that conversation and then wrote a column
00:07:59 pretending it was somebody that he doesn't like that said that he should have pretended
00:08:03 it was Dan Dockage did that to Caitlin Clark and then write the column about Dan Dockage
00:08:08 and then do find and replace and substitute Greg Doyle in for everything.
00:08:13 Dan Dockage is getting to do a well-deserved victory tour cause he's had a long, long history
00:08:18 with Greg Doyle. My ass, my ass. Uh, also Greg Doyle. He, uh, had, I think his old tweets
00:08:25 started to resurface. And, uh, here's one from seven, eight, 2010, which I listen, I
00:08:32 don't love the old tweets thing, but again, he is the scold King. He is the person who
00:08:36 would do this to other people. He would be like, cancel this person for saying this.
00:08:41 2010 was, was truly though. Everyone a way long ago. Again, I'm not, I'm not judging
00:08:46 on the tweet. I'm judging on the cringe worthy press conference, but I just wanted to share
00:08:49 it with you. Just realized my LeBron column references, masturbation, gang bangs, and
00:08:54 oral sex. Damn, I'm twisted. That was the decision. That was the decision. That was
00:08:59 the decision. Yeah. Calling yourself twisted is calling yourself twists is actually the
00:09:04 worst part of this. I've got a twisted sense. I'm so twisted. I'm kind of edgy sometimes
00:09:08 when I talk about LeBron. Yeah. Warning bangs. He's the kind of guy that put a warning at
00:09:13 the start of his call. Warning these, this column contains some serious hot takes. Yeah.
00:09:17 That offends you click the backwards button warning. This author has been accused of being
00:09:23 twisted by himself. And then he does the, uh, the emoji, the old school emoji where
00:09:27 it's the, uh, I guess that would be the greater than sign and then the colon and then the
00:09:33 smiley face. So it looks like a guy that's smiling, but he's, he knows that he's just
00:09:37 said something that's a little bit out of bounds. Damn. You like that? Do more of that
00:09:43 and we'll get along just fine. It's so fucking weird. All right. We had to leave the show
00:09:48 with that because I've just been laughing again. It comes down to the fact that he,
00:09:53 remember we talked about him a couple of weeks ago because he had the column after Purdue
00:09:58 lost the national championship game that essentially, uh, Danny Hurley's an asshole and Purdue has
00:10:04 all the class. Yeah, that's, that's where we're, that's where we're coming from with
00:10:08 this twisted mind of Greg Doyle. Yeah. Greg Doyle. And then Caitlin Clark got a shoe deal
00:10:12 announced right after that. Yeah. Eight figures, which is, I think now she's going to be paid
00:10:17 more than she was at Iowa officially. Right. So she's making upwards of what, what do you
00:10:23 think? Eight figures is 10 somewhere between somewhere between 10 and 99. Yeah. I am enjoying,
00:10:29 um, the burning brush fire tire fire, uh, online right now of just a bunch of people
00:10:35 getting into debates about the economics of a league and no one actually having any expertise
00:10:39 on it. Yeah, it's very fun. Yeah, it is. People are, are showing that they don't understand
00:10:44 how, uh, how the economy works. Yeah, because some people are saying that the WNBA players
00:10:50 are paid too low and then they're comparing them to NBA players and showing what percentage
00:10:56 of revenue the players get in the NBA or how much money they get. It's way less. And so,
00:11:01 but NBA players obviously make way more money than WNBA players, but the league revenue
00:11:06 is much higher. So at the same time, they're making the argument that NBA players should
00:11:10 actually be paid more for what they're bringing, but their salaries are artificially deflated
00:11:15 by the collective bargaining agreement that they have. So it just, it players are fine.
00:11:19 Yeah, no, no, I know. I'm saying like they, they make good money, but if you were to see
00:11:23 like the percentage in league revenue compared to salaries, it's just a fun fun. The NBA
00:11:28 also brings in a fuck load of money. Everyone's going after everyone. I've just been like
00:11:32 diving in. Yeah. Ravel is just sticking with his, that Caitlin Clark would have had a shoe
00:11:37 deal at Iowa and all this stuff. We also had, I saw real quick with Ravel, his new company.
00:11:43 When I first saw his company, I thought it was called clit. Yeah. I thought the name
00:11:48 of his company was clit. You're twisted. I'm a little bit twisted, but I, you see, I know
00:11:54 it's got an extra C in there, but every time I see it, I'm just like, Darren Ravel owns
00:11:58 the clit. Yeah, it's yeah, he does. He owns the clit. We've been there, but it's just
00:12:02 been every, it's basically the Avengers of the internet just going at each other like
00:12:07 Jamel Hill was going at Doug Gottlieb, which that's a fun fight. Then someone was calling
00:12:11 him got dweeb, which I loved. Like this is just the kind of stuff that's going on right
00:12:16 now all because of Caitlin Clark when we really should be focusing on Greg Doyle doing the
00:12:20 heart. Jamel Hill has the race card and then Doug Gottlieb sold it. Yeah, exactly. But
00:12:26 he wrote an apology. Yes. So it's fine. Uh, all right. Playing games, the Chicago Bulls
00:12:33 have advanced to the Friday night game and the Philadelphia 76ers are officially in side
00:12:39 the playoff. Congratulations, Max. Congratulations, Max. You made it. We'll get to Mr. Pair later.
00:12:45 Uh, but Max thoughts on the game. You guys, that was a very classic heat. Muck it up.
00:12:52 Make everyone look bad. Almost steal one. But, uh, Joel and B just starts hitting some
00:12:57 threes and the Sixers are going to the playoffs against the Knicks. Yeah, no, uh, that's a
00:13:03 game that the Sixers lose 10 times out of 10 with Doc Rivers and last year's team. Oh,
00:13:09 um, Nick nurse actually can make an adjustment. Halftime adjustments were very good and Nick,
00:13:16 uh, Nick Patum absolute beast. Like what? What a performance from Nico Patum. He was
00:13:21 a legend and shout out the chicken. Yeah, the free chick shout out the free chicken
00:13:26 turned it all around. Oh yes. Oh yeah. The stadium was absolutely dead. They looked like
00:13:30 shit. I think Caleb Martin missed two free throws, free chicken for the crowd. Immediate
00:13:35 run. Sixers never looked back after the chicken. Shout out the chicken. Yeah, that made all
00:13:39 the, we should do something on this show where free chicken, like free, a free part of my
00:13:43 cheesesteak Buffalo chicken cheesesteak. Yeah. Hank falls asleep on the podcast. Yeah, I
00:13:48 like that. Or he doesn't wake up. Uh, yeah. But June was awesome. Um, I saw a great analogy
00:13:54 for, for Nick Patum. This is from squeaky shooter. He said, Nick Patum is the LeBron
00:13:59 James of Tobias Harris's. Yeah. Okay. Pretty much perfect. Yeah. No, I like that. I mean,
00:14:07 Tobias Harris still was absolutely terrible. Yeah, I know. Well that's the thing is like
00:14:10 you expect one thing from Tobias Harris and you get little Bron James, Tobias Harris's
00:14:15 coming up. Yeah. Yeah. I mean he was awesome. Both sides of the court absolutely kept us
00:14:19 in it and then a beat at the end of the game. Finally he has like a good moment in a, in
00:14:24 a must win game that those last three possessions where he went three and one and then, and
00:14:30 then the pass to, to Uber to get another and one. Now I have to ask this question, Max.
00:14:36 So the Sixers are favored in the series against the Knicks. Yannis, we don't know when he's
00:14:43 going to, uh, come back and play. That might be a problem for the Bucs against the Pacers
00:14:48 in their first round matchup. Is the East opening up for the Sixers? Uh, no, I mean
00:14:54 the Knicks are a really good team. The Nova Knicks, it hurts that I'm going to have to
00:14:57 go against my boys like this, but it's kind of opening up for the Sixers. Yeah, it's all
00:15:03 about and beats health. Like you can even see last night that he wasn't at a hundred
00:15:06 percent. He gutted it out towards the end, but it's a long playoffs. It's a long playoff
00:15:11 six Sixers and five, right? I no longer think Sixers and five. I do think the Sixers and
00:15:15 the Sixers will win. You forgot about the Nova cats. No, the cats are the, the Nova
00:15:21 Knicks. Oh, also Max, you brought up a good point. And bead finally has a big moment in
00:15:26 a playoff game. Unfortunately, the playing games do not count. I didn't say playoff game.
00:15:31 I said must win, but it doesn't count. So it actually doesn't. He didn't have that.
00:15:36 No, he did. No, none of these stats. Yeah. The record books talked about this for three
00:15:40 years. I watched it. The Sully White had his, his career high in 42 points does not count.
00:15:47 I watched it. So, but the stats don't exist. Playing game legend play. Yeah, I guess. I
00:15:52 don't even think, I think once a playing game happens, you can't even, you got to pretend
00:15:55 it never happens. Also by definition, not a must win. If they had lost this game, they
00:15:59 would have gotten to play another game. Good point. True. But that was such a game that
00:16:02 everyone was like, so dialed in to be like, Oh, playoff and beads back. He struggled with
00:16:07 the playoffs. No, but you guys, I mean, that would be the narrative right now. It was not
00:16:13 a must win. He still doesn't understand. Still doesn't get it. But Max, I'm with you that
00:16:18 I've been, I've been buying in on the Sixers. I, cause like if you look at the bracket and
00:16:22 look how it shakes out for him for the reasons we just went through Hank, because Giannis
00:16:27 is going to be limited. Plus they have doc rivers and then the Knicks, the Knicks don't,
00:16:32 they don't have a Randall and their 500 team without Randall. So it feels like the Sixers
00:16:37 get in and beat back. I was very high on the Sixers that first half, especially though
00:16:42 last night did not make me confident in them. Yeah, no, but that, I mean that's the chicken
00:16:48 in coming in with a good game plan, making things sloppy. You're going to have bad halves
00:16:54 of basketball like that, but it's good to see like them bounce back for once that like
00:16:59 against we've had halves like that against the Celtics and then they just went by 50
00:17:04 like, like bad first half. They look sloppy and then they just give up. And it was nice
00:17:07 to see that they didn't give up. They made an adjustment, look good in the second half,
00:17:12 switch some things up, put Tobias Harris on the bench, put Nick Patum in the, in the rotation.
00:17:18 It was, it was good to see. It was good to see it and be, you can get a little bit more
00:17:21 healthy. Max, he didn't have his a game only things are looking up. Things are looking
00:17:25 up. Okay. Hank, from your perspective, I'm curious to know as a Boston fan, who would
00:17:30 you rather play in the first round? The bulls. Yeah. Bulls. Why do you want to punish me?
00:17:35 Why the bulls? No, I mean the heat obviously, you know, have had success against us. No,
00:17:40 Jimmy Butler. No, I know. But still it's like, you just don't just don't mess about the heat.
00:17:45 Don't mess with it. If you play the bulls, it's much better. I can go to a couple of
00:17:48 games. Dick had said he was going to come with me. Yeah. Um, I'd much rather play. Did
00:17:52 he say that? Yeah. I said, I did actually say I would go to one game. Um, the, you just
00:17:56 want the free win, which it would be a free win, but that's okay. Yeah. And it's like,
00:18:00 just don't, don't tempt fate. Like you just want the free win. I just want the free one.
00:18:04 And I'm, I want to go to a game. I'm stuck in a spot where the bulls were awesome against
00:18:08 Hawks who are an unserious organization. That's just don't, they don't believe in defense.
00:18:13 They do not believe in defense. Also, Trey young is there quote unquote best player.
00:18:18 The only time I was nervous during that game was when Trey young was on the bench. Uh,
00:18:22 cause that's when they kind of came back in the game a little bit and it's, I'm stuck
00:18:26 because I love Colby white. He was awesome. I'll come back. He was awesome. Uh, DeMar
00:18:32 Rosen, like is one of the most likable guys out there and the most minutes in the league.
00:18:37 Yeah. I mean he's the best and they try so hard and they don't have a ton of talent.
00:18:42 And so I, when they get on the court, I'm like, I want these guys to win. But then I
00:18:46 remembered that Jerry Reinsdorf likes nothing more than getting a couple extra playoff game,
00:18:52 uh, ticket Gates for a team that has no chance of winning. But at least he's going to contribute
00:18:56 that money towards his other organization, the white socks. Well, actually, unfortunately,
00:19:01 uh, for the future of the bulls and the white socks, Jerry Reinsdorf probably spent all
00:19:05 the money last night cause he, uh, got see red towels for everyone on their seats and
00:19:09 red Panda. Oh, red Panda is coming. That budget is probably blown. Yeah. It's probably, but
00:19:14 it's, it goes with the fans want. Yeah. It is a very like shitty situation where it's
00:19:19 like, I know they're not good enough. They could maybe win a game against the Celtics.
00:19:23 And I also know that Jerry Reinsdorf, nothing would make him happier than being like, see,
00:19:27 we made the playoffs and we got two extra games at home to make money. Um, but then
00:19:32 they get on the court and those guys like it's hard not to root for those guys who are
00:19:35 trying really hard. Yeah. Kobe white seems like a good dude to root for. Oh, he was awesome.
00:19:40 Awesome. And, and yeah. And DeMar DeRozan is the best. Like he's just, he's the best.
00:19:46 So we'll see what happens on Friday night. We'll see what happened. No Jimmy Butler,
00:19:49 we know Alex Caruso. I'm I, I honestly just my, if I had to give you my take on the game,
00:19:55 it's going to be a one possession game with three minutes left and then who the fuck knows
00:19:59 about Jimmy Butler playing though. Yeah. Like playing on a sprained MCL. Yeah. Pretty, pretty
00:20:03 impressive. But then it swells up, it gets worse. So he's probably out for the playoffs.
00:20:07 Yeah. They said two to three weeks. So, Oh, it's just all breaking for Hank. He's just
00:20:12 got that Hank smile on his face. All right. You know what? Let me get this Hank smile
00:20:15 off your face. Oh no, no, no, no, no. Your football owner's a fucking dickhead. Yeah.
00:20:23 So the report comes out after the dynasty documentary where Robert Kraft does an entire
00:20:28 10 part documentary, essentially tearing down bill Belichick. Uh, we're like, all right,
00:20:33 enough, enough, enough. The report comes out that bill Belichick, part of the reason why
00:20:38 he didn't get a job this year was Robert Kraft called Arthur blank and essentially was like,
00:20:43 he's really difficult to deal with. Don't hire him. So in the response to it, I think
00:20:48 the crafts said that, uh, they did not say anything negative about Belichick during that
00:20:54 interview process, but owners might talk behind the scenes over the course of a frustrating
00:20:59 season. It would have been funny if he just came out and he's like, I did not say anything
00:21:03 to Arthur blank. All communication with Arthur blank was done through craft LLC. Yeah. Not
00:21:08 my words, not my words. So where are you? This is tough because it does feel like Robert
00:21:14 Kraft is like kicking a dead body at this point. Like why, why would you go that extra
00:21:19 mile? Like the breakup happens. Why go the extra mile and make sure that he doesn't get
00:21:24 another job? That's crazy to me. Yeah. I feel like he there, like it's kind of the same
00:21:30 thing with Brady where they, in the documentary, they made it seem like, you know, Brady just
00:21:34 wanted like some atta boys and some, some thank yous. Like it was probably the same
00:21:37 with craft where he felt slighted for whatever reason, just ego. But what? And Belichick's
00:21:42 not the type of guy to be like, thank you so much, Robert. Like, and, and kind of kiss
00:21:46 the ring cause he was giving him the rings. Yeah. Um, but he's, he sounds like a, a scorned
00:21:52 ex. Yeah. He's had a bad off season. I would say it hasn't gone exactly how he thought
00:21:57 it would go. And he's entering territory where it's like, he's going to start getting like
00:22:00 booze, which is insane. But like he is, he has set himself up for that where they're
00:22:05 going to do an event. Maybe like it's like Tom Brady, like the Tom Brady, they're doing
00:22:08 Tom Brady day six 12. Um, and I think they're giving him a statue or whatever at Gillette.
00:22:15 And I could see there being like booze or something where like that's gonna, that's
00:22:18 gonna rattle. It happens. He's done it to himself. And it happens in sports from time
00:22:22 to time where the owner deludes themselves and thinks that they actually are what fans
00:22:26 are rooting for. And it's like, that's just never the case. It was always Brady and Belichick.
00:22:31 It's never the case. And yeah, I don't, it, it sucks cause now, I mean he's, he set himself
00:22:36 up for, for disaster cause it's like they have a four and a half, you know, wind total
00:22:40 over under this year. They're not going to be good and everyone just kind of come at
00:22:43 his neck. Oh, that, that statue unveiling is going to be a big day for you though. You
00:22:48 have to nail that one. Yeah, they got to give him a bigger statue than AI. I mean they'll,
00:22:52 they'll, they'll do them. They'll do it right. Yeah. The AI status. No, that was bullshit.
00:22:55 Tiny little statue. Every single tiny little statue. If I, as a fan of the commanders,
00:23:02 there's one thing that we can do well, that's honor our former players with statues. Correct.
00:23:06 And that AI statue was garbage. That's every statue that goes into the garbage. So they're
00:23:11 all garbage. But why, why is Rocky gets such a big and why? Oh, because it's not in front
00:23:15 of the practice facility. Rocky's not even real. Yeah. It's not in front of the practice
00:23:19 facility. This was like a bad take that the internet didn't know that all the other statues
00:23:24 in front of that facility existed. And then they were like, fuck, are you saying we don't
00:23:28 know? I'm sticking with it. I'm sticking with the take. Why don't they just get bigger statues
00:23:32 for everyone? They just don't value it. And also why do they unveil it? It's an aesthetic.
00:23:35 Yeah, but don't, you guys don't know. You guys don't know architecture. Don't don't
00:23:40 know architecture. Don't unveil it that way then don't do the fucking reveal like that
00:23:45 when it's like, Oh, why did AI seem so surprised? Yeah, he was shocked. AI is always surprised.
00:23:51 No, it's not architecture. It's a statue. It's not a building. We're talking about it's
00:23:55 it's a it's an aesthetic. You don't appreciate the greatness that Allen Iverson brought to
00:24:00 the city of Philadelphia. Landscaping architecture. Of course I come on. I grew up on AI. I was
00:24:05 that was like the first fan I ever was of anyone landscaping and architecture. Yeah.
00:24:10 Landscaping architecture. I think that's the thing. You weren't a fan of your dad first.
00:24:14 First Jersey ever. Bob's. Yeah. I don't know. Everyone was the first Jersey I had to fan
00:24:18 of their dad. Also the Brett Favre Jersey. Wayne. Do you ever take a picture in that
00:24:22 Brett Favre Jersey with your cock out? I was like four. So probably. Yeah. Probably the
00:24:31 same size. I was a naked boy too. Big meaty clankers. All right. So Hank, uh, you have
00:24:41 your draft prep because we're have draft week coming up. We have Todd McShay coming on the
00:24:47 show on Monday and then we have Daniel Jeremiah on Wednesday. Do you have your draft prep
00:24:52 ready or internally? Yes. Okay. This is a big occasion for you. How do you want me to
00:24:59 actually or do you actually, one of these guys is going to be your quarterback. Yeah.
00:25:03 So I broke down the film for everyone. I didn't, I mean I can rank them right now. I have just
00:25:07 kind of notes on everyone and I do have my consensus of who I would prefer the Patriots
00:25:12 to take your own consensus, your personal consensus. Well yeah, you know, you can trust
00:25:17 the analysts out there, but like until you make your own decision, do you know what a
00:25:19 consensus is though? Yeah, it's me, myself and I made a kind of came to a consensus.
00:25:23 All right, so do it in order then. Right? Yeah. Do it in reverse order so we can get
00:25:27 the unveil of number one. So start at the start at the bottom and then go, go to one.
00:25:33 Okay. JJ McCarthy. That's, he's the bottom. He's the bottom. He's the, he's the, he's
00:25:41 the bottom of this entire exercise. So Michael Pratt is ahead of them. Spencer Rattler's
00:25:47 ahead of them. Oh, I just did that. I did the, I thought I was going for the people
00:25:51 that Patriots are going after. Oh, top five. Oh, okay. So top five. I'm not, I'm not worried.
00:25:56 Like it's, it's number five. I thought we were getting all the quarter. The Patriots
00:25:59 aren't drafting Spencer Rattler. Okay. Three. Why not? Yeah. Why not? Cause that's just
00:26:04 not what you wouldn't know. You didn't watch the tape. Is he, I think he's dating Kaylin
00:26:08 Clark. Saw it. Instagram comments. Definitely not. Okay. Maybe not. All right. Greg Doyle
00:26:14 is dating McCaffrey's son in his head. All right. So wait, Hank, you have, you have your
00:26:18 top five, which means that you must've watched the film on the other quarterbacks. If you
00:26:22 knew that these were the top five. Good point. Pft. How many, what's the other quarterbacks
00:26:27 I was supposed to watch? Michael Penix. Wash them. Bonics. Didn't watch. Oh, Bo Nix. Who
00:26:33 is bonus? No, like he's where's bonus projected to go. Probably like could be a first rounder.
00:26:40 Probably a second rounder. Okay. Probably should've watched him. Okay. I got Bo Nix.
00:26:44 I mean I got Michael Penix Jr. JJ McCarthy, Drake May, Jane Daniels. Okay. Sorry. So JJ
00:26:49 is your fifth. JJ is my fifth. And what are your notes? Short throws. Okay. Everything
00:26:54 across the middle, but throws a well across the middle. Okay. A better zip than Drake
00:26:59 May. That's a, that was, that was a big contributing factor. I really, I really care about the
00:27:03 zip and how quickly the ball comes out. Okay. Uh, gutsy runs, big ball sack. Okay. Okay.
00:27:09 All right. Number four. Wait, wait, but those are all, those are all positive traits. Why
00:27:14 is he ranked number five? What's his downside? These other guys must be incredible. He doesn't
00:27:19 throw it. Didn't see any long balls or all the long balls wide open. Short throws. He
00:27:23 was, it's a, which again, you know, you kind of watching, it's like he seemed to, he was
00:27:26 a game manager system. Quarterback. How long was the YouTube video that you watched? 13
00:27:31 minutes. Okay. All right. That's a good amount of film. Um, number four, it's Drake May.
00:27:39 Oh, he slid. He's deceptively fast. Okay. Quicker than I expected. Uh, great at selling
00:27:48 pump fakes. That's good. Sliding. He's smart. Uh, Jane Daniels, there was a lot of runs.
00:27:53 He was taking a lot of hits. Drake May, a lot of slides, like gets out of the pocket
00:27:56 moves around well, but slides knows, knows when to slide. That's good. You know, franchise
00:28:00 quarterback, you want them there for a long time. Can't be taking big hits. Yup. This
00:28:04 does. He tried to kick his opponents in the balls when he slides. I didn't see any of
00:28:08 that. Okay. Cause that would be a good system fit for you guys. Um, well now we, you know,
00:28:12 we got, we got rid of him and that was, that was Robert Kraft. Bell trick wanted a, wanted
00:28:15 him out quick feet. Okay. But this, this was the biggest, the biggest deterrent and the
00:28:22 thing that I see happening the most, the ball seems very heavy in his hands. Oh, so he's
00:28:26 got weak wrist. Maybe it just, it just seems like it takes them a long time to get the
00:28:31 ball up and out. And it seems like he's putting a lot of effort into throwing it. It seemed,
00:28:35 you know, he's playing in the ACC, the film that I was watching. If you're, you know,
00:28:39 simulating NFL guys come at him, it seems like he's going to take a lot of hits. Guys
00:28:43 are coming at him. He's knocking me able to get the ball out fast enough cause it's heavy
00:28:45 in his hand. Heavy in his hand. How do you like his frame? It's a little short, but good
00:28:50 frame. No, no issues with this frame. I don't know. Remember that picture you took with
00:28:53 Sam how he's actually six, four looks short in the film that I was watching. All right.
00:28:58 But yeah, that was, that was ball seems like I want to, I want to, I want to see a QB.
00:29:04 No world short. I want it. Well, he's like, that's the perfect size for a quarter. Yeah,
00:29:08 no, I guess if you know what, if he was doing which quarterback could play in the NBA six,
00:29:12 four would be short, but if he was that big, you would think that he would be able to just
00:29:16 zip the ball. It's heavy. Okay. Got it. Meme's had this exact same take heavy in his hand.
00:29:21 No, he was like, he was like Drake Mase too short to be a good quarterback. And I looked
00:29:24 it up. I was like, he's six, four and he's like, well, he looks short. Okay. Like we
00:29:27 had this exact conversation. Short energy. He plays shorter than his body. Okay. All
00:29:32 right. Next. Uh, Michael Penix jr. I think he, he, the only reason he's, he's this far
00:29:37 up is just cause he's a lefty. I'll just say that bias lefty bias. I would just love to
00:29:41 have a lefty quarterback, you know, leading my franchise as a lefty myself. So beautiful
00:29:47 throwing motion, accurate does a little bit of a heavier ball, uh, as well, a little slower
00:29:53 coming out. Seems a little bit interception prone. A lot of, a lot of throws off his back
00:29:58 foot, which again, you're trying to simulate how this would look in the NFL guys coming
00:30:02 at him. If he has time to set his feet and he's accurate, but it seems like he will kind
00:30:06 of, you know, get a little wild, throw off his back foot, throw a duck. He does the fadeaways,
00:30:10 but the thing about his fadeaways are they're insanely accurate. Like he will put the ball
00:30:15 on a dime on an out route even though he's falling away from the ball. But that's one
00:30:18 of those things when you're playing in college and you're the guy that works when you're
00:30:23 playing in the NFL and everyone's fast, that's not going to work. Yeah. But he's a lefty.
00:30:28 So he, he, he got pumped up above Drake. Man. Yeah. I think lefties look good in college,
00:30:31 but they look like witches in the NFL. Yeah. Two of them too. Good or bad. It's good. Okay.
00:30:38 So yeah, uh, Jane Daniels is number two or no, that was number one. Oh, nice. Okay. Jane
00:30:48 Daniels. I didn't even watch. I just, we're not, you told me a million times we're not
00:30:52 taking Caleb Williams. I was thinking of this as just like Patriot Patriots. Uh, Jane Daniels
00:30:59 throwing on the move. Great. Great on the move. Quick feet gets out of the pocket maneuvers,
00:31:04 uh, Saxon and stuff. Well, does take a lot of hits. Little Josh Allen, smaller though
00:31:10 than Josh Allen. That's definitely a concern. Again, franchise quarterback. You want this
00:31:14 guy as your, as your QB for 10, 15 years, he scrambles a lot, takes a lot of hits. That's,
00:31:21 that's a concern, but great. Fantastic. The best QB I've seen at, at hitting the sideline
00:31:27 in the corner of the end zone. Oh, like JJ McCarthy just throws everything over the middle.
00:31:32 Jane Daniels, deadly accurate to the corner of the end zone. Deadly accurate to the sideline.
00:31:37 That's huge in the NFL. That's, that's the thing I like the most. Uh, elbow elbows weird,
00:31:44 but I definitely dig them for the elbow. And, and again, it's like if you get hit and you
00:31:48 get hit in the elbow, then you could see his bone coming out of his arm. This has been
00:31:54 a great exercise for one reason. Um, Hank has just without realizing admitted that he
00:32:00 really wishes he could have both of our quarterbacks and also said that the quarterback that he's
00:32:06 most likely going to get is ranked either fourth or fifth. So I love this exercise.
00:32:12 This won't hurt. Is Ryan Thomas jr in the draft was another question I had cause he's
00:32:16 a stud. What are we? Google? No, I just, I was, I have to, I guess I didn't do my follow
00:32:22 up. I was, these are just the notes I was writing as I was watching this. Um, I don't
00:32:26 believe so, but that you want him. Yeah. I mean his receivers, like I think all of his
00:32:33 deep balls were, were just wide open. I think that's a receiver, a receiver talent thing.
00:32:39 If it were up to me, no, he's not. I wait. I think we talked about him with McShay, Brian
00:32:46 Thomas, Brian, Brian Thomas. Yeah. Maybe it's Brian. I was just, I was, he said Ryan. I
00:32:50 was listening. I said Ryan, I was listening. I was listening to the video. Oh, so it probably
00:32:56 was Brian. It is Brian. Okay. He is in the draft. You didn't watch, you just listened.
00:33:01 Well, no, I'm saying they didn't have fucking subtitles. I was like, Brian, like touchdown,
00:33:06 Ryan Thomas, Brian Thomas. I heard, I heard Ryan, but clearly it's Brian. Uh, that guy's
00:33:11 a stud. This is the best draft preview ever. If it were up to me, Marvin Harrison jr trade
00:33:17 up Michael Penix. That's, that's my best case scenario draft. Okay. So you draft, you draft
00:33:22 Marvin Harrison third overall and then you trade up to what? I don't know. To get Ryan
00:33:28 Thomas to get Penix jr. Got it. Penix jr. Probably top 10. Is he projected to go top
00:33:38 10? Maybe not. Maybe it depends on if there's a run on quarterback first round, but this
00:33:41 ha it happens from time to time when there's a bunch of first round graded quarterbacks.
00:33:46 Once a few of them get drafted, then teams start to freak out and that's how we ended
00:33:50 up with like a, who is it? Um, Brandon, we didn't get in draft in the first round. Yeah,
00:33:55 but it's, it seems might've gotten smarter cause it's like, well, Levis fell because
00:33:59 it was like, all right, everyone could just wait and get them in the second round. But
00:34:02 there is that phenomenon of wanting to get that extra year of control too. Yeah. Like
00:34:06 the Lamar Jackson trading back up into 32 and getting him. So that's, that's my, uh,
00:34:11 that's my analysis. I guess I'll watch some more, some more film. Maybe there's other
00:34:16 guys that they could trade up for the Spencer Rattlers. Yeah. He just, he just said, we
00:34:21 just did an entire exercise where he's like, I really want PFT and big cats quarterback.
00:34:25 So you have, you have Caleb number one, Jade and Daniel's number two. Yeah. And then a
00:34:29 long, it sounds like there's a big gap, big gap, panic, panic shooter, big gap. Yeah.
00:34:35 Drake may JJ McCarthy. I'll be on draft, but strength. No. Jay Drake, Drake may can be
00:34:40 good. He's just got to grow. He can, he can get some strength there. Yeah. He can do some
00:34:45 bicep curls. He just looks like, yeah, it looks like he's throwing a medicine ball.
00:34:49 Yeah. He would look short in that Patriots uniform too. Did you watch any of the games
00:34:52 that he played in the rain? Is that maybe part of this? Uh, I didn't see many of those
00:34:56 on the, on the, I was watching literal heavy ball. All right. This was great. Do we have
00:35:03 anything else before we get to our interviews? This was great. Yeah. Oh, uh, John T Porter
00:35:07 that he's gone. Yeah. He was gambling. He was betting against the Raptors in some games.
00:35:12 Yeah. Like betting on them to lose. What was this about? What, what, what if this was Yoke?
00:35:17 I don't think he'd be banned for life, but I also don't think he'll cause you would ever
00:35:20 do it because he's making enough money that that would be the dumbest thing ever. That's
00:35:25 why it happened is he's a fringe guy. Who MBA money is so ridiculous. I don't think
00:35:31 he was getting that much. Crazy thing is he was betting parlays against himself. So he
00:35:35 was betting the unders and like rebounds. I forget what else, maybe assist points. Um,
00:35:41 and he put down 80 grand to win, I think $1.1 million on a John T Porter under parlay. Yeah.
00:35:49 And it hit obviously cause he was controlling it. And then the sports book was like, well,
00:35:53 we're just definitely not going to pay this out. One of the dumbest things ever. One of
00:35:57 the dumbest ways to go about it. How much action do you think that that sports book
00:36:01 see on any given night on John T Porter prop bets in general? Right. It's probably nowhere
00:36:07 close to $80,000 ever. Yeah. He was on a two way Hank. So he was getting nothing. I mean
00:36:14 they had to do it. I think that's the right move. Like you can't have someone betting
00:36:18 on against yourself. Yeah. So if it had been different, if he had bet his overs in a parlay
00:36:23 and if he had bet on his team to win and that had, that had actually happened, what do you
00:36:28 think the punishment would have been? Um, probably similar because he's a fringe guy.
00:36:33 It's also, he was telling other people too, like he was using proxies to bet him, which
00:36:37 that is very, very bad cause then it's just the integrity of the game. So I, yeah, the
00:36:42 NBA probably had to do it. And it also, I know people will then make an argument about
00:36:46 gambling and like the legalization gambling without the legalization of gambling. This
00:36:50 probably never gets caught. Yeah. Yeah. Now you could, every sports book has things in
00:36:55 place where they see these like giant anomalies and then they flag them to the league. I wouldn't
00:37:00 be shocked if there is maybe a little bit of a correction where some of the, uh, fringe
00:37:05 players don't have props on a night to night basis. That would make sense just because
00:37:10 those are the guys like a Yoke, which would never do this because he's making hundreds
00:37:15 of millions of dollars. But a guy who's the 10th man on a bench who knows that if he bets
00:37:20 something checks into a game for a minute and then comes out, he can win. That is, I
00:37:26 can understand where people like this is kind of a weird area where it can be manipulated.
00:37:30 Yeah. I like his excuse too. He was saying that he had like a headache or his eye hurt
00:37:34 to come out of the game. I hit in the shoulder and then he's like, my eye. Yeah. My eye hurts.
00:37:38 My eye hurts so bad. I can't play anymore. Coach can't play. Uh, okay, let's get to our
00:37:43 interviews. Incredible interviews. We got Joe Missoula, Boston Celtics head coach wins
00:37:47 us over big time. And then we have Michael Malone, Denver Nuggets head coach. We had him
00:37:53 on last year. Great interview. Great guy. Uh, and then we'll do fire fest and we'll
00:37:57 have Mr. Pair come back out here before we get to coach Missoula cores light. There are

00:38:45 Okay. We now welcome on a very special guest. It is Boston Celtics head coach, Joe Missoula
00:38:52 getting ready for the playoffs. Uh, the number one seed, the best team in the NBA in the
00:38:57 regular season this year, coach, let's start there. How are we feeling? Just vibes going
00:39:04 into the playoffs because you've been coaching a team that knew they were the number one
00:39:08 seed for a long time, knew that you were in the playoffs for a very long time. Uh, how
00:39:12 are we feeling knowing that this is the start of the new season? Yeah, I mean, I think you
00:39:15 hit on a great point there. Uh, the balance of, you know, you have to understand that
00:39:19 you're a really good team. Uh, but you got to understand that like none of that really
00:39:23 matters as much anymore because everyone's got the same record. You know, we're all zero
00:39:27 and zero and every series takes on a life of its own. So, uh, we've had a really good
00:39:32 week of practice. Uh, I think it was good for us, you know, a couple of those games
00:39:35 that we had at the end of the season, uh, that didn't necessarily go our way. Uh, but
00:39:40 I thought we handled, uh, the regular season about as well as you can from a mental standpoint.
00:39:44 And, you know, we got to go into the playoffs with that same balance. Uh, we are a really
00:39:49 good team, uh, but we can lose at any time if we don't do, uh, the little things. And
00:39:53 so it's important to have that mindset. Yeah. Do people think that this season has been
00:39:56 easy for you guys just because you've had so much success? Is that something that kind
00:40:00 of gets lost in it, that it has been a grind? Yeah. I mean, I think obviously on the, uh,
00:40:04 outside it probably looks as like, you know, we didn't hit a ton of adversity or, you know,
00:40:07 we've only had two game losing streaks. It could look that way, but you know, I kind
00:40:11 of said this a few times, it, it can be just as hard handling winning, uh, as anything
00:40:15 else because you can get complacent. Uh, you know, you could get prideful, uh, you could
00:40:20 take the details for granted. And I thought like the, the coolest part about our guys
00:40:24 this year is they never took winning for granted. I thought they handled it really well. Like
00:40:28 every film session, every walkthrough, every practice we had, it was a high level of attention
00:40:33 to detail and execution. And like, even though we were winning, the guys wanted to grow and
00:40:36 get better. I think that says a lot about just who they are as players. Yeah. All right.
00:40:40 So enough of the cliche, uh, basketball talk, let's get to the real interview. When was
00:40:44 the last time you were choked out? Uh, the day after we lost to Atlanta, I, I, uh, I
00:40:52 punished myself there. I took it really hard on myself. Um, so can you, can you explain
00:40:57 the jujitsu? Cause like it was, that story came out last year. Um, it seemed really cool
00:41:01 cause it's like just learning about other guys and in, in the height of their profession,
00:41:06 they have these hobbies. You have a jujitsu, uh, instructor who for a while you didn't
00:41:10 know lived in Colorado and would come at the drop of a hat and, and, and do jujitsu sessions
00:41:18 with you. And also he talked about, um, feeling the pressure of playoff basketball and it's
00:41:23 similar to being in a choke hold. So you're just, you're just getting choked out by this
00:41:27 guy who's flying in. You have a guy flying in to choke you out. So we'll start there.
00:41:31 So when I, um, the coolest part about, you know, becoming the head coach of the Celtics
00:41:36 and like, you know, achieving your dream at a relatively young age, you kind of look back
00:41:40 and you look at all the stuff that you regret. And so like two of my biggest, not biggest
00:41:45 regrets, but like two things I wish I stuck with were chess and martial arts. So I did
00:41:49 those as a kid growing up. And you know, once my dad passed and my kids started to get older,
00:41:55 I started to like rekindle the passions of the arts, like chess, piano, martial arts.
00:42:01 Um, and I started to rekindle those with my kids and then I get the job and I'm like,
00:42:05 all right, like, you know, coaching the Celtics, you're in a fucking fight every day. Like,
00:42:10 so let's just simulate that. And I was like, let's rekindle my love of the arts. And so,
00:42:15 you know, my assistant and I, we find a jujitsu instructor and I fell in love with this guy
00:42:20 like right away. So apparently he was in Denver when we called his, his office was in Boston,
00:42:26 but he was living in Denver, uh, because of COVID. And we were like, can you come by the
00:42:30 house tomorrow for like the, an initial training session? And he just was like, this is a,
00:42:36 you know, apparently this is the head coach of the Celtics. It's like a once in a lifetime
00:42:39 opportunity. I'll be there tomorrow. So this guy gets on a red eye and shows up to my house,
00:42:44 full gi, black belt, like standing in the driveway. Like we have our first lesson in
00:42:50 the guest house, uh, in the guest room of our apartment. And from then on in, he, he,
00:42:57 he's the guy that I go to, to help simulate the stress, the pressure, the anxiety, like
00:43:01 all the shit that you've got to be able to overcome. Like if you're not doing that as
00:43:05 a person, then you can't do it as a coach. And like, and I, like I give my players, our
00:43:11 players so much credit, like being in the arena all the time. Like, I feel like one
00:43:15 of the ways I can connect with them is by feeling like them. So like on a day where
00:43:19 if it's a back to back, Hey, I just trained too. So like, I'm tired too. So it gives me
00:43:23 a way to connect with the guys, but it gives me a way of being empathetic. Like I know
00:43:27 what they're going through. No coach understands what their players go through, what they sacrifice
00:43:33 physically and mentally. So if I can get the shit kicked out of me from time to time, that's
00:43:36 only going to help me get better.
00:43:38 I like that strategy a lot. And for listeners out there, don't, do not look up online guys
00:43:43 to fly in to come choke me out. That's a bad Google search to have on your history.
00:43:48 We lose the Atlanta game, right? We blow the 30 part beer and I'm just pissed. Right? So
00:43:51 I go to the, the, I go to the gym, we find a gym in most cities and for like two hours,
00:43:56 we're just like, I still, I still got a little piece of like the black eye from it.
00:44:00 Yeah. So do you do that? I mean, I appreciate what you said about how you want to put yourself
00:44:05 through strenuous situations so you can empathize with your players and be tired just like they
00:44:09 are. Do you find that the more you get put in those situations where you're either getting
00:44:14 the crap kicked out of you or you're getting choked out, you're able to stay calm in those
00:44:19 moments and that translates to being in a game in high pressure situations.
00:44:23 Yeah. So like one of the things Alex does, he's tremendous is he finds these concepts
00:44:28 and themes that correlate to competition in general. Right. And so one of the themes is
00:44:32 like most people tap before it actually like before the submission actually hurts. Right.
00:44:37 It's like the fear of being in the submission is when you tap. And so like that can be applicable
00:44:41 to handling a championship expectations or success or being in a tough spot and like,
00:44:47 you know, thinking that you can't get yourself out of it. So, you know, it's a little dark,
00:44:51 but like one of the things in most submissions is you do want to find a comfort level because
00:44:55 there usually is a way out. You just can't see the way out because of the stress that
00:45:00 you're under or because of the panic that you're under. So like you're breathing sky
00:45:03 rockets and you don't even notice the exit strategy because you're in a disadvantaged
00:45:08 situation. So that's kind of one of the concepts that we work on is like, okay, you know, you're
00:45:12 in this disadvantage. Can you recognize the exits? Can you recognize the contingency plan?
00:45:17 You know, using your, the details and the skill.
00:45:20 That's bad ass. I would have tapped out the minute he showed up in my driveway. I've been
00:45:23 like, all right, nevermind. I'm tapping out. Like a man with a black belt in a key is knocking
00:45:29 on my door. I would just move. Yeah. Just start tapping immediately. Two of the other
00:45:35 cool themes are like the closer you are to winning the closer you are to losing. Right?
00:45:38 So like you saw it at UFC 300 where Jalen Turner knocks the guy down, walks away and
00:45:44 then loses next round. And then you see, you know, when Wai Lee Zhang like pretty much
00:45:51 chokes her out. And then as a, most people can't handle the fact that you think you beat
00:45:55 your opponent, but now you still have to fight them. Oh, like that's a major mindset shift
00:46:01 in a game of like, okay, they look like they're dead, but they come back to life. How do you
00:46:06 shift your mentality to like keep winning or like in Jalen Turner's case, like you knocked
00:46:11 the guy down, but he gets back up. Now your expectations like haven't been met. Yeah.
00:46:16 So you like, so we work a ton of those like situations like, okay, you know, one minute
00:46:20 left in the round, you're in a disadvantaged situation. You got to get yourself out of
00:46:24 it. Or like one minute left in the round, you got to go for the kill. Like you've got
00:46:28 to find the submission because if you don't, if you give your opponent life, then you know,
00:46:33 he could come back and kill you. That's, I mean, it's genius. You can see how applicable
00:46:36 that is to basketball, especially a seven game series where there are those ebbs and
00:46:40 flows where it's like a team goes up to, Oh, and you're like, all right, they won. And
00:46:44 that's just not how it works. It just always, there's always a wrinkle in a team can get
00:46:49 momentum back. Wow. All right. That was a, I mean, it does. It sounds like Sun Tzu. You
00:46:55 mentioned before we start taping, you read art of war or do you take like, we listen
00:46:59 to art of war when we train. Oh, what's an art of war lesson that you can apply to basketball?
00:47:05 So when we use with our offense, like with the guys is now this is, I don't, you know,
00:47:08 this is obviously different from when he wrote it, but like there's only five musical notes.
00:47:11 There's only five primary colors and mixing all those together, you know, having the simplicity
00:47:15 of only five. But when you add them all together, you get this beautiful you know, this, this
00:47:20 array of colors of a beautiful music using simplicity to, to, you know, get complexity
00:47:26 out of it. And really just like how you view your opponents. Like you have to have the
00:47:31 ultimate respect. The most respectful thing you can do for your opponent is understand
00:47:36 that they can beat you at any time, but you can't have too much respect, right? I think
00:47:40 it's a balance and it kind of talks about our team. So when we were fighting the first
00:47:45 couple of months, once we started fighting, he stopped around and he was like, you have
00:47:49 too much respect for me. You're better than you think you are. But because I'm a black
00:47:53 belt, you're treating me as if you suck. He's like, if you believed in yourself and if you
00:47:57 knew that you were better than you were, you would actually, you could have tapped me.
00:48:02 You could have beat me a couple of times. And so it was really cool, like balance of
00:48:06 like what humility really is like humility. Isn't like, Oh, I suck. And this guy's a black
00:48:10 belt. It's like, you got to find the right balance of knowing like, I'm pretty good,
00:48:14 but this guy's better. I can still, I can win, but he could also beat me. And I thought
00:48:18 that was a major shift in our, in our training was when like, I didn't have too much respect
00:48:24 for him, but I had like enough like appropriate fear. You hear a lot of people like talk about
00:48:28 that. Like that's a real thing.
00:48:29 You can, you can, by the way, in this room right now, Hank, our producer is a diehard
00:48:33 Celtics fan. He's smiling ear to ear because you can feel, you can feel it shifting in
00:48:37 the room that PFT and I are becoming huge Joe Missoula guys. 10 minutes into this interview.
00:48:42 Like he can, he's, he's looking at smiling being like, yeah, I told you this is my guy.
00:48:46 All right. So, so very few of those around. So yeah. PFT, do you want to ask a question
00:48:52 about the town or do you want me to? Well, I, I had, I had a question for, I was just
00:48:55 going to ask you how much a dollar bill weighs.
00:48:57 Ooh, I mean, that's great. Huh? I got to think about that scene. Right. So they're in the
00:49:03 bar. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Not even worth its own weight. Do you have it playing behind
00:49:10 you right now on a big TV? So let's clarify that. So as an assistant, I watched it two,
00:49:18 three times a week. Easy. That's too many. Just so you know, well, you got to think like
00:49:24 we do most of our work after the games. And so like you got to stay up late at night.
00:49:28 Like I, I never liked waking up with work to do from the day before. So like when I
00:49:33 was an assistant and I would have to turn in my postgame edits, I would go home and
00:49:36 walk in like just work from like 11 to 1 AM. And so I needed something to like kind of
00:49:42 keep me up or keep me going. So there was like a three movie shuffle that I would turn
00:49:47 on in order to get me through the game so that I could get to bed and the town ended
00:49:51 up being one of them. So like, I'm not, it's not something that I'm like, you know, I obsess
00:49:55 with to the point where I'm still watching it, but that was, that was a part of my postgame
00:49:58 process that kind of helped me. Okay. What were the other two movies? Whiplash and the
00:50:03 dark night. Oh, okay. Those are good. Those are good ones. Those are ones where if they're
00:50:07 on TV, I will, I will always watch it all the way through. Yes. I stumble upon it. Yeah.
00:50:12 But you did. You have to watch those three movies. Yeah. I think you're downplaying your,
00:50:16 your obsession with the town just a little bit. Cause he didn't make t-shirts from the
00:50:19 town. Well, I mean like there's so many great like lines from that. Like the one, the one
00:50:24 where he, where he finds out that Dougie McCray's sleeping with the, with the, with the bank
00:50:31 manager, Jeremy Rennick's like smart. I'm blowing the assistant manager. Am I being
00:50:37 smart? Like he just flips out like, like, like randomly throughout the day. Like this
00:50:44 company assistants will just like throw phrases out there from the movie. Like anytime I walk
00:50:48 down North end, I'm like, say your prayers. Yeah. I love that. And I would imagine the
00:50:55 tie in with Boston probably has a lot to do with, with your, uh, your love of that movie
00:51:00 too, where it's just like, okay, this makes me feel like a Boston guy watching this. I
00:51:03 went to Fenway the other day and I was literally looking at like exit strategies. Rob Fenway.
00:51:10 I was like, we could probably really get away with this. Like, yeah. Yeah. Um, are you,
00:51:14 how could you not go to Fenway and think that you can, you couldn't rob it? Yeah. The blue
00:51:19 printers right there. I was thinking about that this morning. Actually I was just driving.
00:51:22 I was like, fuck, I really want to rob Fenway park. It would be awesome. Yeah. Uh, you can't
00:51:28 look at our armored truck the same. No, definitely not. Definitely not. Uh, are you in there
00:51:35 with her? He ties his pants into his bootstraps. Yeah. That guy's a boy scout. Yeah. Are you,
00:51:41 are you officially retired from trying to block shots? I got forced into that. Okay.
00:51:45 So for people who don't know, there was the sun's game this year, the cells were playing
00:51:49 the sons and uh, Jalen Brown stole the ball in the backcourt, dunked the sons called the
00:51:55 timeout, but they'd already advanced the ball. And uh, I can't remember who it was. It was
00:51:59 trying to heave one from about 40 feet and Joe Missoula got onto the court and tried
00:52:03 to block it after the whistle. But you were, were you reprimanded for that? Uh, I was slightly
00:52:09 a little slap on the wrist. Okay. So I mean, I liked the energy though. Like the guys probably
00:52:14 liked it. I mean, that's out of war at its finest. Like how, I don't understand. I don't
00:52:18 understand how you could give your opponent any opportunity to feel good about themselves
00:52:22 on your half of the turf. Uh, so like, and we've been doing that for two years. Like
00:52:27 we do, it started last year where I'm at Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell took a free throw and one
00:52:31 of my assistants just watched them and I berated him and I was like, bro, what are you doing?
00:52:36 Like you can't allow the best player on the other team to just take a shot in front of
00:52:40 him. I don't think there's anything more insulting than allowing your opponent to do that. I
00:52:45 mean, and so we just put a stop to it from then on out. And so we've had about four or
00:52:50 five, you know, really, really good closeouts by, by the staff. And unfortunately that one
00:52:55 was on, you know, live TV and, and people saw it and, uh, you know, so we can't do it
00:53:00 anymore, but it's, it's one of those little, it's a, it's a gamesmanship thing. Like, you
00:53:04 know, NBA basketball is competitive and, um, you know, uh, I just think you gotta be able
00:53:10 to find any little advantage that you can. And so I'm not gonna let a guy, and he, he
00:53:14 hadn't been shooting the ball well the entire game. So like, what if that one kind of gets
00:53:17 the, gets him the rhythm that he needs to make one.
00:53:21 Yeah. What about if a fan takes a shot? So hypothetically, if the ball goes into the
00:53:25 crowd, the guy in the first row gets it, and then they want to put up a shot from the sideline.
00:53:30 If they're, uh, if they're on your team, if they're hypothetically again, a Celtics fan,
00:53:35 would you want them to shoot it and let it go in?
00:53:37 Absolutely.
00:53:38 Okay. Cause we have actually a guy that's here that lived out that hypothetical situation.
00:53:42 Hank got the ball. What game was that Hank?
00:53:45 I was warriors finals game three, I think.
00:53:48 Yeah. Yeah. But he didn't have the courage to put up a shot. He did the pump fake on
00:53:52 it instead of actually taking a shot. Do you wish he had shot that?
00:53:57 Yes. I got Jordan pool to bite though. He, so he like jumped at the pump. Yeah. He was
00:54:04 ready to, he was ready to block me, but yeah, maybe you got to shoot that. You got to shoot
00:54:08 that. Let it be known. So Hank is a massive fan of yours is a big Celtics fan and he's
00:54:13 agreed, he's agreed to shave his head and his beard if the Celtics win the NBA championship
00:54:18 this year. So there's a, there's a lot at stake here. Hank, do you have any questions
00:54:21 for coach?
00:54:22 Uh, yeah, I got a couple. Um, I saw JJ Redick and LeBron were talking about how like every
00:54:27 player in the legal kind of when they're down, they'll look up their highlights, you know,
00:54:30 they'll go on YouTube. How often do you look up 2010 West Virginia versus Kentucky? Uh,
00:54:37 sweet 16.
00:54:38 Never. Never.
00:54:39 What?
00:54:40 Ever. Never. Oh, that was such a lucky game from like, from my standpoint. And you know,
00:54:47 the one thing I always try to prevent is like the older you get, the better you were. And
00:54:51 I was, I was not good.
00:54:53 17 points. First start John wall to Marcus cousins.
00:54:57 I don't want that to ever become a thing where it's like the older he gets, man, he was such
00:55:01 a good player. It's like, no, I wasn't. I was like the worst player on the court at
00:55:04 all times in the big East.
00:55:06 What about how many times did you have to hit Huggy bears treadmill?
00:55:10 A decent amount.
00:55:13 Yeah. We've, we've, we've had Huggy on a bunch of times and that treadmill, he doesn't sound
00:55:19 like it was fun.
00:55:20 It depends on what your definition of fun is.
00:55:23 My fun is not running.
00:55:24 No, my fun is, is, you know, being as combative as possible in a high stress situation. So
00:55:30 there was a few times where we would exchange words while I was on it and he wasn't and
00:55:34 I let him know that he couldn't, he wouldn't have been able to run on that treadmill.
00:55:38 Yeah. I think you just like depriving your brain of oxygen in any form, whether you're
00:55:42 getting choked out or running long distances. You just let you, you like getting that, that
00:55:46 runner's high going.
00:55:47 It's better than an on bar. Yeah, true. True. Don't want to get on bar or leg lock. You
00:55:52 don't want to get leg locked.
00:55:53 Hank, you got anything else?
00:55:55 Uh, yeah. Who, you know, vibes are good. It's after practice, maybe after a win, who's,
00:56:00 who's the guy on the team that will kind of chirp you the most or like is, is the most
00:56:03 out outgoing to try and get a rise out of the other guys on the team? Like who's the
00:56:07 guy that will kind of come at you a little bit to get the other guys going?
00:56:10 Who are players that come at me?
00:56:12 Yeah. Like chirp, like, you know, it's, it's, it's like after a good practice, after a win,
00:56:16 like they're just kind of, you know, they'll chirp you though to, to kind of get a laugh
00:56:19 out of the other guys.
00:56:20 Uh, they probably do that more when I'm not around. I think that's probably like the nature
00:56:24 of coaching is like, if your team's not making fun of you, then you're not a coach. Probably
00:56:27 like, you know, I'm sure they, they also probably spend zero time thinking of me outside of
00:56:31 basketball, which I'd be perfectly fine with also.
00:56:34 Uh, but after practice, you know, it's a really cool environment. I've really enjoyed being
00:56:38 around these guys. Um, you know, you, what you learn is like, you can go to each guy
00:56:42 and kind of each guy has their own thing that you can bust balls with, you know what I mean?
00:56:47 Like, so I try to do that after every practice or shoot around is like, just get a quick
00:56:52 touch point with the guy. And like, if it needs to be a serious conversation, but I
00:56:55 don't really enjoy being serious ever. Um, if not, it's like, you know, what could we
00:57:00 bust balls about? And so I really enjoy that.
00:57:03 So you're like Derek, like, thank God you shaved your head.
00:57:07 No, Derek's more like, he loves sarcasm. So like, we'll pick something and just like,
00:57:12 just stop mocking it with like severe sarcasm. I like that. I like that. Like we lose one
00:57:17 game and it's like, Oh my God, how, how could we ever lose? Like, or like he'll, he like,
00:57:22 we'll have like a turnover in a game and I'll be like, bro, what were you thinking?
00:57:27 Does Paul Pierce just live at the practice facility?
00:57:30 No, but I enjoy having him around. He comes around a decent amount.
00:57:34 Yeah. Yeah. We, uh, we did a little research on you. Maybe some, some questions that you
00:57:39 didn't think that we would ask you. Uh, those are the ones I love the most. Okay. Uh, the
00:57:44 first one is that your, your dad and you went to a baseball field together when you were
00:57:47 a kid and something unusual happened. Would you care to elaborate on that?
00:57:52 That is one of the reasons why I am today. And I think it's an important thing in society
00:57:57 is the alpha male challenge. It's kind of what me and my brother call it. Okay. Yeah.
00:58:03 Yeah. Myself that day. And, uh, he put his money where, you know, he, he tried to have
00:58:08 me put my money where my mouth is. So it was a little rainy, uh, baseball field on the
00:58:12 side of the road, uh, head out there and he closes the gate. Kind of like where the guys
00:58:17 do batting practice. And, uh, he just said the winner walks out of here alive.
00:58:23 And did you, who did he win or did you win? I mean, so I remember vividly, like it was
00:58:30 a little bit of rain. I saw some mud and I really didn't have a plan. So like my goal
00:58:33 was to like get mud thrown in his face and kick him in the nuts and like, you know, at
00:58:37 least like try to, you know, get them a little bit, but he had mud. Wasn't great catches
00:58:43 my heel. And then it's just a pulverizing beat down, get back in the car. And he gave
00:58:47 me like the Wilson, uh, the Will Ferrell old school. Like you tell anybody about this,
00:58:51 I'll kill you. Alpha male challenge. I love it. So we ended up going to, uh, we always
00:58:58 ate dinner most of the time at my grandmother's house, like typical Italian family. So I'm
00:59:01 just sitting there like in mud, like sniffing, crying, like just eating my food. Like the
00:59:07 loser that I was at the time. And like, just no one's talking to me and I'm just licking
00:59:11 my wounds. The alpha male challenges, it's just locking yourself in a fence and fighting
00:59:15 your dad. Yeah. I like that. Yeah. What about, um, that on in, it was like, you know, you
00:59:22 better, if you, if you're going to run your mouth, it's like, yeah, better be able to
00:59:26 handle it. Yeah. What about the fact that, um, you're a head coach in the NBA? Uh, you
00:59:31 know, obviously nice contract, very successful, still driving a minivan that 90,000 miles.
00:59:37 I got to get it to a hundred G's. What, what, what's up with that? What kind of minivan?
00:59:43 I mean, it's a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. Okay. Oh, you're putting some miles on that thing.
00:59:48 Damn. Yeah. It's a nickname. Free Willy. Okay. I'm shaped like an Orca, my favorite animal.
00:59:53 Okay. Oh, that's good. At the time it made a lot of sense. I understand why it doesn't
00:59:58 now, but uh, you know, I, I got to finish it out. Okay. I like to see it through. So
01:00:03 once it gets to a hundred thousand, are you getting a new minivan or are you, are you
01:00:06 moving up in the world? It depends. I haven't really seen something that I like. So it started
01:00:11 cause we were living in West Virginia and we were always driving like either to Ohio
01:00:14 or to like, you know, beaches around the area, like an ocean city or, you know, down South.
01:00:19 And so it made a lot of sense. Our kids were a little bit young. And so I was like, and
01:00:23 you know, my kids had a bunch of friends living in the area. And so we always had like five,
01:00:28 six people around. So it made sense living in West Virginia. Didn't see all this happening.
01:00:33 Doesn't make as much sense living in the city of Boston being the head coach. Yeah. Yeah.
01:00:37 I'd say I like it though. That's a commitment to the minivan going to a hundred. If you
01:00:41 were to describe it from the outside, black leather interior, automatic doors, TVs in
01:00:45 the back, you wouldn't know that it's a minivan town always on for your kids. Yeah. I like
01:00:53 that. I like that a lot. It's a good car. Yeah. Uh, Hank, you have any more questions
01:00:57 for coach? I got a tip for coach while you think about it, Hank. I'll take that. All
01:01:02 right. Okay. So here's the tip. So we are taping this right now on Thursday, bulls heat
01:01:07 on Friday, decide who the Celtics play. If it is the bulls, could you please let the
01:01:11 bulls win one game? That's just my only request. Uh, but I got, so I I've done a little scouting
01:01:16 for you, uh, whether it's the bulls or the heat, I got one player I picked out on each
01:01:21 team. Uh, so I'll start with the heat, Tyler hero. Uh, here's my scouting report, scores
01:01:27 in transition, especially after makes have to connect and direct to take away, pull up
01:01:31 threes, prefers left-hand drives, likes to drive the slot. Uh, and then for Kobe white,
01:01:36 he runs in transition, half his shots are threes, no open looks. Can't let them split
01:01:40 a pick and rolls. So just a little tip for you. Uh, that actually is from, you got that
01:01:45 from my, uh, yeah, that's from Joe Missoula. So Joe Missoula is quizlet, uh, where he scouted
01:01:50 every player in the NBA leaked online and, uh, everyone has his, his scouting report
01:01:56 for every player. It's a little dated now. What happened there? I mean, that's such a
01:02:00 funny story. It also shows how, how like attention to detail, cause it's just a huge PDF of every
01:02:06 single play.
01:02:07 Yeah. So I, I, one, I didn't see any of this coming. So I have, I just thought I was going
01:02:12 to be like the behind the bench, you know, slapdick, you know, for most of my career.
01:02:17 And so I, you know, that, that was kind of my, uh, introductory to like people actually
01:02:21 give a shit about me thing. And I was kind of pissed about it, but I mean, when I made
01:02:24 my quizlet, I was like, I didn't know how to make it private. I also didn't, they didn't
01:02:30 think people were going to hack into it. So, uh, I always work with rookies so that I would,
01:02:34 I would give the rookies a well detailed, like in quizlet gives you different types
01:02:38 of quiz that you can, you know, decide to get through information on. Um, so we would,
01:02:43 I would, uh, the rookies and I would always take those before the game. Oh, okay. That
01:02:47 was like, that was my way of learning the league because I went, came from D two to
01:02:51 the NBA. And then it was my way of like building a relationship with the rookies that I worked
01:02:55 with, like how detailed can we be and like, what are all the different ways we can retrieve
01:03:01 the information, whether it's like, and some of them, some players learn differently. So
01:03:04 some like matching some like fill in the blanks, some like, um, you know, multiple choice.
01:03:10 So like it gave, it helped me learn, but it also helped me learn how the rookies learn.
01:03:15 Yeah. Yeah. It's very cool. I mean, again, it's the attention to detail. Have you, have
01:03:19 you had a conversation with Derek white though about him? Uh, you had on his, uh, wants to
01:03:24 throw his body into you and draw fouls. Have you talked to him about it? Yeah, that was
01:03:28 one of the things I was really excited about when we got them is we'll get to the free
01:03:31 throw line more. Yeah. It's smart. Yeah. I, it is interesting though that any, any coach
01:03:35 can get instant access to your mind though. Yeah. When they looked that up, you should've
01:03:39 put some like fake, fake stuff. That's, that's, that's just scratched the surface about what's
01:03:44 going on up here. Yeah. It's a quiz. It's just a quick, like, Hey, let's, let's look.
01:03:48 You don't want to know what's really going on in my mind. What's really going on in your
01:03:52 mind? He's trying to rob Fenway park. Yeah. I mean, literally how can I win every single
01:03:58 situation or environment? Like how can I, how can I win the environment no matter where
01:04:03 I am at any particular time? What are the threats, the strengths and the opportunities?
01:04:07 And like, can you look at every single situation, uh, as a life or death situation from the
01:04:13 standpoint of like, this person's a threat, this situation, like I won't walk through
01:04:16 revolving doors because like one of them gets stuck, then you're just a sitting duck. Yeah.
01:04:22 That's true. I haven't, I haven't thought about that, but now every time I go through
01:04:25 a revolving door, I'm going to think about it. I'm going to avoid them. So what about,
01:04:29 okay, uh, you go to get your coffee in the morning, stop and dunking donuts. And what,
01:04:34 what goes through your mind? How do you win that situation? Uh, just figure out where
01:04:37 the exits are. Um, look at the line on the way in, study all the people. Yeah. Don't
01:04:44 have your back to the door. Like you in a restaurant, I never sit with my back to the
01:04:47 door. Yeah. Yeah. You always got to sit to where you can have a vantage point of like
01:04:52 everything that's going on around you. Yeah. Okay. That's fascinating. That is. And you
01:04:55 never turn that off. No, that's an unfortunate thing for my family. So like you're at home,
01:05:03 you're sitting on the couch, you're watching cartoons with the kids. What's your mindset
01:05:06 then? Uh, what can I take from this to like teach my kid a lesson? Like you can't just
01:05:11 watch this just to watch it. Like there's gotta be something here that's gonna, that
01:05:15 you gotta learn from it. Yeah. I, I am, I'm falling in love with the coach Missoula. Yeah.
01:05:20 But it, it, it's not all positive, right? Like it's not, I'm not saying I'm a good person
01:05:25 for it. There are a ton of negative ramifications to that type of mindset. Yeah. Like your wife
01:05:31 or kids come to you with like a very empathetic situation and it's just like, yeah, you're
01:05:37 just telling yourself that. Yeah. Yeah. Right. You're breaking it down. Like it's, yeah.
01:05:41 Like it's trying to, trying to bust up someone's pick and roll strategy and you're just like,
01:05:44 no, I was like, okay, well you know, how'd you get to this point? Yeah. It's like, no
01:05:49 dad, I just said I have a, I had a bad day. Yeah. Sometimes, sometimes your wife just
01:05:54 wants you to be like, yeah, that person was very unfair to you. Yeah. Like no, like you
01:06:00 can't let that person be unfair to you. Yeah. Yeah. Hank, what was your, you thought of
01:06:05 one? Uh, yeah. You roll, you roll a jujitsu mat on the, on the floor after practice, whole
01:06:09 team tournament. Who's walking out there, no injuries, injuries are impossible. Whole
01:06:13 team tournament. Who's, who's walking out on top. Man. So that's kind of the beauty
01:06:20 of jujitsu is like, you don't know, everyone's a weapon and everyone has a different weapon
01:06:25 and you don't know that weapon until you get into the fight. Like if you ever gone to a
01:06:29 jujitsu class, one of the most debilitating things to your own ego is like the three guys
01:06:34 next to you that are like overweight, just came from like work. They can barely do like
01:06:38 the pushups and the sit ups like in the warmup, but they're like Brown belts and you get into
01:06:43 a fight and you, you, you last like 10 seconds and it's like, how did I lose to this guy?
01:06:47 Yeah. But like it actually teaches you to respect everybody around you, but study each
01:06:53 guy and like you study each guy's body type and it's like, okay, like if I get into a
01:06:56 fight with that guy, like he seems more of like a leg dominant guy. He'll probably have
01:06:59 some like leg triangles or, you know, that guy's a little speed. So it, you can't take
01:07:05 anyone for granted and you have to have the ultimate respect for everyone because everyone's
01:07:09 a weapon in their own way. Like that's the beauty of it. So I, I don't know because you
01:07:13 don't know what any one person's capable of.
01:07:15 Yeah. I bet it's Brad Stevens. I bet Brad has a plan to, to kill everybody in the room.
01:07:19 Yeah. He seems like the kind of guy that would have that. Speaking of Brad, has he ever told
01:07:24 you you're coaching for your job? Um, doesn't everybody tell me that? Well, yeah, I mean
01:07:29 your job is to coach. Yeah. Yeah. Good point. I kind of tell myself that we have an old
01:07:38 friend, internet friend who would always tweet Brad Stevens coaching for his job and people
01:07:42 would get so upset and he's like, well, his job is to coach. I tell myself that though.
01:07:47 Yeah. It's a good mentality to have. How much do you guys miss having Blake Griffin on the
01:07:51 team this year? Oh yeah. Man, he's awesome. Isn't he? Yeah. He was on the show on Wednesday.
01:07:56 He just, he was, he's one of our good friends. I told this story yesterday, like I have the
01:08:01 utmost respect for him. So when I get the job and we signed Blake Griffin and I'm like,
01:08:06 shit, like this guy was the number one pick. Like I don't know anything about this guy.
01:08:09 I knew everyone else on the team for the most part. And I'm like, how am I going to coach
01:08:13 this guy? You know, like sometimes the hardest people to coach are like the guys that are
01:08:17 a little bit aging. Like they may still have it. They may not, you know what I mean? And
01:08:21 um, so I make a, we make a decision to kind of be like, we go away from him for a couple
01:08:25 games or whatever the case may be. And uh, he comes up to me and he's like, what do I
01:08:30 have to do to get better? And I was like, damn, like that said everything I need to
01:08:34 know about the type of person that he is, like to, of his stature and like experience
01:08:40 to have the respect for a first time head coach who, you know, didn't know what the
01:08:44 hell he was doing to ask that question and to like take it serious to where he was out
01:08:49 there every single day. Like I had the utmost respect for him. Did you, did you tell him
01:08:53 learn how to dunk again? I told him we need to get a car out there. He could jump over.
01:08:58 Yeah. Yeah. Blake is the best. And he has, he had nothing but high praise for you guys.
01:09:02 And he said that he was like very close to wanting to come back, but he didn't want to,
01:09:07 he didn't want to cheapen it and like come back at the end of the year and not be with
01:09:11 the guys all year, which I respect the hell out of. I refrained from begging him to come
01:09:15 back because he, he told me he wanted to be with his kids. And so like, you know, I know
01:09:19 how hard that can be, but I would have done a lot to get him back in our locker room.
01:09:23 Yeah. So on that note, we always said, we'd say that like Blake's the most important player
01:09:27 on any team that he's on, regardless of how much he was playing, just cause he's, he's
01:09:31 a good guy to have around. He's kind of like the straw that stirs the drink sometimes.
01:09:36 Outside of like the superstars on the Celtics right now. Yeah. Who would you say would be
01:09:41 the most important guy? I would tell you like that range from like, like eight and a half
01:09:47 to like 14, like those guys don't get enough credit because they, they really hold the
01:09:52 locker room together because they could easily shut it down halfway through the year or have
01:09:57 like a negative mentality. You know what I mean? Yeah. You know, so like, like, you know,
01:10:01 like, like Peyton and Sam, they, they had their minutes and they've gone through that
01:10:07 grind of like the inconsistencies and they've played their butts off this year and like
01:10:11 have been great. But like the O'Shea, the Luke, the Tillman, this fee, I don't want
01:10:18 to forget anybody here. So help me with that. But like those group of guys that like, don't
01:10:22 get it every single day. And then you have a guy that gets an injury and now they're
01:10:25 starting or like, it's a second night of a back to back and one of them's playing 20
01:10:29 minutes and like, you're being hard on them because you know, you need them to help you
01:10:33 win like that. Those group of guys really grateful because like you said, I don't think
01:10:38 they get enough credit for how they helped the culture of the locker room. Yeah. Yeah.
01:10:41 Well, yeah. Well coach, this has been awesome. We really appreciate it. I got one last question
01:10:47 for you. It's row back to a row back question. RHO, BACK.com promo code take a Q-Zips, Polos,
01:10:53 hoodies, joggers, shorts, even bathing suits. Now rowback.com promo code take. So we did
01:10:57 have an inside source for this interview. Your brother, he brought up something about
01:11:03 an Italian bakery. There's two of them maybe in your, your hometown and there's a big debate
01:11:09 about it. So can we settle the debate? Can you tell us the debate and settle it? I mean,
01:11:12 the bait I guess is which one's better. Yeah. So which one is, I mean, I can't, I don't
01:11:16 want to do that to either company. Okay. I do want to talk about the Italian discrimination
01:11:21 to the big East conference. Yeah. Okay. All right. Speak on it. Yes. Yeah. I couldn't,
01:11:26 I can't. I, I, when I heard that, I was like, yes, like you got to think like Massimino
01:11:30 carna, Secca, Gavit, like, yeah, of course there's an Italian discrimination. So you
01:11:35 think that's why they didn't get enough, enough bids in the tournament this year? Yeah. Everyone's
01:11:38 just tired of the, the tallies. Max is pumping. This is bullshit because I was not supposed
01:11:47 to like you, but that rock, that was awesome. Yeah. You've even won over the Sixers fan
01:11:51 here. That's hard to do. I mean, I don't, when you said that, I was like, there had,
01:11:56 like, there's been so much mafia run through the big East over the years. People are probably
01:12:01 tired of it. Yeah. Okay. So who's on your Mount Rushmore of Italians? Ooh, good question.
01:12:07 That's a great question. Thank you. Great question. Putting you on the spot here. Yeah.
01:12:12 Oh, I know. I mean, Mario Balotelli is going to be up there. Okay. Yeah. Play for the national
01:12:19 team. They're goalie also. He's been around really, Buffon. Yeah. He's played for like
01:12:25 30 years. Yeah. Um, there was a whole bunch of like naturalized citizens that have been,
01:12:30 you know, up there along the way. Yeah. You can go with, you can go old school, like little
01:12:34 Leonardo, uh, you know, Da Vinci can go with some, some of that stuff. Yeah. Donatello,
01:12:40 all the Ninja Turtles, all the Ninja Turtles. I think I appreciate Donatello and Leonardo.
01:12:45 Okay. Yeah. It should just be the Ninja Turtles. And Mike Florio, who's an Italian from West
01:12:51 Virginia. So you got to mention him, Mike Florio. And I think, I think the Ninja Turtles
01:12:56 are probably up there. Yeah. All four of them. The best Italians. You should have your jujitsu
01:13:01 guy come over dressed as, as Michelangelo and choke you out. Or use one of the, uh,
01:13:07 who's the guy who's the one with the num chucks? Num chucks is Michaelangelo. Party dude. Yeah.
01:13:12 Cowabunga. Yeah. Yeah. That's my favorite. Okay. Yeah. He's the best. Yeah. I would take
01:13:17 you as more of a Raphael guy, but that's more calculating. But Michelangelo. Raphael is
01:13:22 more of my personality. Yeah. Michelangelo is my son's favorite. So I, I, I flock to
01:13:27 him. Okay. That makes sense. It's good to have, it's good to have Italian represent
01:13:31 representation in media like the Ninja Turtles. Yes. Um, well, coach bakeries. Yeah. Bakeries
01:13:39 coach. This has been awesome. We are, you've won us over. Um, good luck in the, in the
01:13:44 rest of the, uh, in the playoffs. If it's the bowls, I hope you can at least give us
01:13:48 one game. If it's the bowls, you got to come by the office and maybe put us through a drill.
01:13:52 Maybe choke us out. Yeah. Oh no, no, not if it's Chicago, we go through a jujitsu session
01:13:57 at the facility. Okay. Done. I'm in done. And we work on like contingency plans, exit
01:14:02 strategies. Yes. Yes. Yes. Always a way out. Yeah. I feel like you would hate going to
01:14:07 an escape room. Ooh, no, we went to one this year. Were you panicked in there? Were you
01:14:13 like, I don't know how to get out? I wanted to make a room in my house and escape.
01:14:20 Because like you get, so we move into, so we, I get the job, right. And we buy a house
01:14:25 and uh, you know, my wife's like super excited. Like it's one of the goals of her life. Like
01:14:29 to have the house like, and she picked a really nice one. And uh, so what we have, we have
01:14:35 jujitsu mats at the house. So Alex comes over and he's like, you know, this might not be
01:14:41 a good thing. Like, you know, the guy that lives in the townhome, isn't the guy that
01:14:44 lives in this nice house. You know, the guy that, uh, drives a car to work is not the
01:14:50 same guy that used to walk to work. Like you can't let this, you can't let this change
01:14:54 you. So like all, so then like the classes for that week were like all demoralizing to
01:14:58 make sure that I didn't like enjoy the fact that we moved into this house. So I'm sitting
01:15:03 in bed with my wife and I'm like, yeah, I mean it's a nice house, but we just, we just
01:15:06 can't let this get the best of us. Like we got a big, we got, we got, you know, stuff
01:15:11 coming up. We got to stay locked in. Like we can't let this change us. And she like
01:15:14 almost started crying. It's my dream. You are an idiot. You develop a rivalry against
01:15:22 the house every day. You're trying to beat the house. Yes, absolutely. Alpha male challenge
01:15:27 with the house, walk into the house and like kicked a door on purpose. And it was a whole
01:15:32 shitty. All right. Well coach, this has been so, so much fun. Um, and yeah, you have won
01:15:38 us all over and best of luck in the playoffs and we'll talk soon. I appreciate it. And
01:15:42 last thing I want you guys to know, uh, I came into coaching, uh, because I think NBA
01:15:47 players get, get a bad rep and there's a, you always hear about college coaches or people
01:15:51 say they can't coach. I got the best group of guys. Um, I think NBA players in general
01:15:56 are misunderstood with what they deal with on and off the floor. Like what they put their
01:16:00 bodies through and like, just because they make a lot of money, it doesn't mean that
01:16:03 it's easy. And so I got the best job in the world coaching the Celtics and I got the best
01:16:08 job in the world because I got great players and they allow me to be myself and allow me
01:16:12 to coach them. And uh, you know, I can't take that for granted. So I want you guys to know
01:16:16 that and uh, I'll come on anytime and bust balls with you. Okay. And just so you know
01:16:19 what you just said, that doesn't mean we can't say like, Oh, I would have made that free
01:16:23 throw cause I will say that from my couch. Okay. Absolutely. You have to say that. Okay.
01:16:28 Good, good, good. Later. All right. Thanks coach.
01:16:33 Joe Mazzullo is brought to you by our great friends over at proper number 12 Irish whiskey.
01:16:38 I love proper 12 had some proper 12 last weekend and I want to remind you guys to pour the
01:16:43 roar with proper number 12 Irish whiskey and they also have proper Irish apple. It's from
01:16:48 the heart of Dublin. 12 original proper number 12 is rich. It's smooth. It's a blend of golden
01:16:53 grain and single malt aged four years in bourbon barrels. Truth be told, I can't think of anything
01:16:58 better than a pregame session of proper whiskey and gingers or my personal springtime pick
01:17:02 which is proper Irish apple, a delicious blend of proppers award winning Irish whiskey with
01:17:08 crisp and fresh notes of Irish apple. Proper number 12 Irish whiskey, proper 12 Irish apple,
01:17:14 two refreshing ways to pour the roar because anything else just wouldn't be proper. You
01:17:18 can pick a bottle, try it for yourself. Original rich and smooth proper 12 Irish whiskey or
01:17:23 you can try crisp and fresh Irish apple. It's all smooth to the core. And now here's Denver
01:17:31 Nuggets coach Michael Malone. Okay, we now welcome on a very special guest. It is coach
01:17:36 Michael Malone, Denver Nuggets, NBA champs. We haven't seen you since you won the NBA championship.
01:17:44 So let us be the last people to wish you congratulations on winning the NBA title. We had you on last
01:17:51 year around this time and I want to, I want to, we want to talk about playoffs, the season,
01:17:56 everything. But the first question, very important question, how are we doing with the Mike versus
01:18:01 Michael thing? Are people following the rules? Are they actually following the rules? You
01:18:07 know, I think, I think I scared most people away when I, uh, when I was very rude to a
01:18:13 Cassidy Hubberth on the sidelines of a play of a playoff game. But no, most people are
01:18:18 following the rules. I think the streets are talking. They know that if they don't call
01:18:22 me Michael, my mother's going to come looking for him. No, I appreciate it. You got, you
01:18:26 got to put your flag in the ground, let people know. We were actually the Michael police
01:18:30 last year when we saw people referring to using the wrong word, we would jump down their
01:18:35 throat and say, no, you get it right. That's a future NBA championship coach right there
01:18:39 and put some respect on his name. But yeah, it was, it was great. Uh, we, we were rooting
01:18:44 for you last year. Obviously we, we believed in the Nuggets, uh, from, I think like two
01:18:48 years ago we started to say, get ready for the Nuggets cause they're coming. They're
01:18:51 a great team. Uh, so thank you for making us look like we know ball. It's a very rare
01:18:55 occurrence where we look smart on the show. So we want to make sure to give you your credit
01:18:58 for that. And, uh, I just want to say that I'm looking forward to another potential Michael
01:19:03 Malone, uh, championship parade because you had, you had the best time ever at that parade.
01:19:09 And I think everybody watching was like, yeah, if I ever won a championship, that's exactly
01:19:12 what I would do. So how long, how long did it take you to feel normal after the parade?
01:19:17 Oh, I tell you a while. And the worst part about that parade was that night we went to
01:19:21 Las Vegas and uh, you know, I started early that day, so I didn't last late into the night,
01:19:27 unfortunately. But, uh, the parade was awesome. My wife was next to me on the fire truck.
01:19:32 She kept on telling me to slow down, slow down. And, uh, I really didn't know what that
01:19:36 meant if we just won a championship and I definitely went all out and hopefully we can
01:19:41 find a way to celebrate another parade because this city turned out and that was one of the
01:19:47 coolest moments of my life was not only winning a championship, but celebrating with a city
01:19:52 that had waited for 47 years to win their first NBA championship.
01:19:56 Yeah. Even Yoko had fun at the parade. That's how you know that it was a good parade. So
01:20:00 all right. So last question about last year and then let's turn the page. All focus on
01:20:04 this year. Uh, how many times have you looked down on your arm and been like, I really did
01:20:09 get that tattoo. Sometimes I forget I have it. And then obviously
01:20:13 I get out of the shower, I look in the mirror and I, I remind myself I got maxi the minor
01:20:18 and he's going to be with me every step of the way moving forward. And I did save some
01:20:24 room though for some more trophies and more tattoos. So we'll see what happens.
01:20:28 I like that. So you said almost immediately after you won, you might've even said it before
01:20:33 you won your first title that, that the goal was to establish something longterm to establish
01:20:38 a dynasty in Denver. When did you start thinking that it would be possible to even compete
01:20:43 for multiple championships? You know, I go back to the bubble and I know
01:20:47 we lost to the Lakers in the Western conference finals. Uh, but that's when I felt, you know
01:20:52 what, we have a special player in Nicole Yoko. We have a special player in Jamal Murray and
01:20:58 now we have to make sure we bring the right pieces in to help those guys. And we had injuries
01:21:03 after the bubble where we weren't whole in the playoffs, but finally being whole and
01:21:07 healthy and adding guys like Aaron Gordon, adding guys like obviously Contavious Caldwell
01:21:12 Pope. We have Michael Porter who's just continued to get better and better. And last year having
01:21:18 veterans like Jeff Green and Bruce Brown and a young player in Christian Brown who showed
01:21:23 out and helped us want to play a finals game on the road in Miami. And it was, uh, we knew
01:21:29 if we were healthy, we had a chance to beat anybody. And last year was the first time
01:21:33 in a while where we were completely healthy and, uh, it all, it all came together at the
01:21:38 right time. So talking about this year, uh, you've been
01:21:41 coaching for a very long time. This was the first time that you're coaching and you have
01:21:45 a championship team that just won a title. What were the challenges like a day in and
01:21:50 day out coaching a team knowing like, you know, we talk about it all the time with sports.
01:21:53 There's a switch that you can flip. Was there moments where you're like, you could feel
01:21:58 that maybe the focus wasn't there because everyone's been there, done that. And they're
01:22:02 just waiting for the playoffs. Was it a different set of challenges as a coach to get that motivation
01:22:07 day in and day out because you already hit the top of the mountain and you've got to
01:22:10 climb back up? Yeah, it definitely was. I mean, and that
01:22:14 was our whole mindset going into this year, starting a training camp in San Diego. And
01:22:19 you know, I, I told our players, listen, we've gone from being one of the 29 teams that's
01:22:24 hunting a championship and now we're going to be the team that's being hunted by everybody
01:22:28 else. And with that success comes responsibility to understand that and to own that. And now
01:22:35 that means you have to work harder every day. You have to be more prepared and understand
01:22:39 82 games this year. You're getting everybody's best. And I tell you what, we tied a franchise
01:22:44 record for 57 wins this year. We went 21 and six out of the all-star break tie for the
01:22:50 best record in the NBA. I give our players a ton of credit for handling that responsibility
01:22:55 in a very mature manner. Were there times this year where I feel like I had to jumpstart
01:22:59 the guys and remind them of that? Of course, 82 games is a long season, but here we are
01:23:06 number two seed getting ready for the first round. And again, I think our players have
01:23:11 done an outstanding job of handling that success while also not being satisfied and staying
01:23:17 hungry because we want more. Yeah. Yeah. You mentioned responsibility. Do
01:23:20 you feel a sense of responsibility knowing that you have maybe, you know, certainly a
01:23:26 transcendent player in Yolkage, a guy whose skillset we've never seen before in the NFL
01:23:31 or excuse me, the NBA and a guy who moving forward could be an all time great. Do you
01:23:34 feel responsible that you have to make sure that he's able to tap into all this enormous
01:23:40 potential and tap into his ability to like the highest extent? Is that something that
01:23:44 you think about? Like, I don't want to let this guy down.
01:23:47 Of course. And for Nicola, but for the other players, too, you know, we won a championship
01:23:52 last year and I think we did something that I don't think any other championship team
01:23:57 has done. We went younger in hopes of trying to repeat. So now developing Christian Brown,
01:24:02 Peyton Watson, Julian Strother, while having our five man starting lineup who we know what
01:24:08 we're going to get from them every single night. But I always feel a responsibility
01:24:12 to not only help Nicola, but to prepare our team, to put them in the best position to
01:24:17 have success. And if we don't win a game, the first person I look at is me. What could
01:24:23 I have done better? What could I have done differently to help my team? And, you know,
01:24:28 we we always bounce back. We always stay together. Very connected group. And that's why I love
01:24:32 coming to work every day, because I feel our locker room of players, my coaching staff,
01:24:37 our front office, our ownership group. I think we have something special that I don't think
01:24:42 you find in all pro sports very often. Yeah. All right. So bad memory question, but I'm
01:24:47 very interested in your response. So you guys were fighting for the one seed Friday night.
01:24:52 You lose the Spurs get the two seeds. Still an incredible season. Like you said, franchise
01:24:57 record and wins. But what Wemby did on Friday night? Can you tell us standing there and
01:25:04 watching him like as there's never been anything like that in the NBA in terms of just his
01:25:09 ability? Like he's so much bigger than everyone. He's shooting threes. Did you ever catch yourself
01:25:14 while playing him at any point this year being like, what am I even watching right now? This
01:25:18 is insane. Oh, definitely. And obviously, you know, we played them four times. And what
01:25:24 was really impressive about watching Wemby this year from early in the year to we played
01:25:29 him in Game 81 is the improvement within one season. And early in the year, you could tell,
01:25:34 wow, this guy is really tall. He can block shots. He's pretty skilled by the end of the
01:25:40 season. And I think pop did a great job. That's why he's a great coach. You saw Wemby handling
01:25:46 the ball in the open court. You saw him shooting pull up threes. But the one thing that really
01:25:50 jumped off the page for me that I saw a huge improvement was Wemby's ability to be a playmaker,
01:25:56 his passing ability. He was making all his teammates better. And for me, that's always
01:26:01 a mark of greatness. Yeah, you can be a really good player, but can you make those around
01:26:06 you better? And obviously, it was a tough loss for us. But yes, you're watching Wemby
01:26:11 and you're saying, wow, this guy is a future of the NBA. He impacts the game offensively,
01:26:17 defensively, playmaking. And he's a competitor. I mean, he's only going to get better. He's
01:26:22 going to get stronger. But I don't see any weaknesses in his game.
01:26:25 Yeah, I mean, it was the game that he scored, I think, 17 points in three minutes. And it
01:26:29 was just like, what is going on right now? It's crazy to watch.
01:26:34 He was shooting pull up threes from 35 feet. You're not used to seeing that from a player
01:26:38 at 7'4", whatever he is. You see that from Steph Curry. But now you have a seven footer
01:26:45 doing all those things. And it's kind of like, wow, this guy is going to be unguardable at
01:26:49 some point. Yeah, with the longest arms ever. So it's
01:26:51 almost like he's got the arms of a 7'6" guy and he's 7'4". It's like impossible to stop
01:26:56 something like that. How do you go about game planning for a great individual player like
01:27:00 that? Because we saw it just a couple of weeks ago in March Madness in the NCAA tournament
01:27:05 where Hurley's strategy against Eadie was basically, you know, he's going to get his
01:27:09 points and we can let him get his points, but we're not going to let everybody else
01:27:13 on the court beat us. When you're going up against a superstar player, and obviously
01:27:16 in the NBA, everybody's good, right? Everyone can shoot the ball. But is that more often
01:27:21 than not your strategy of just accept the fact that the superstar is going to do some
01:27:25 damage and try to limit everybody else? Well, I think it depends on the player, the
01:27:30 matchup, who's around that player. There are definitely games and opponents will all say,
01:27:35 listen, we know he's going to get his, but they're at their best when everybody else
01:27:39 gets going. So you let that certain player maybe get his 25 to 30 points, but you take
01:27:44 away the three point line for their other players. Then there are certain nights where
01:27:48 you say, listen, we can't let this guy get off. He's scoring way too easy. We have to
01:27:52 send a double team. And that's not just in the post. That may be a player on the perimeter,
01:27:57 like an Anthony Edwards, like a Jalen Brown, who are just really tough covers on the perimeter
01:28:02 where you may have to send a secondary defender and then look to fly around behind that. And
01:28:07 obviously, you know, Danny Hurley, a tremendous job at UConn winning another title and his
01:28:12 game plan against Zack Eaddy in the post was terrific. They took away all the Purdue shooting
01:28:18 and made Eaddy be the one guy that was scoring. And then there were times where they decided
01:28:22 to double team, but their multiple effort and fly around mentality was outstanding.
01:28:27 That was what impressed me about UConn was just their defense on the ball, off the ball
01:28:33 for 40 minutes was just incredible.
01:28:35 So I had a question about that. So it's, you know, New Jersey high school players are having
01:28:39 a moment right now with Danny Hurley winning his back to back. You're, you know, you went
01:28:44 to Seton Hall prep for a couple of years in New Jersey trying to go back to back. Did
01:28:48 you play against, it would be Bobby, right? Like he was at the time. Did you have games
01:28:54 against him?
01:28:55 Oh yeah. And I played against Bobby and you know, the other St. Anthony's players, Jerry
01:28:59 Walker, all the guys Jasper Walker, different players, but yeah, Danny was younger, but
01:29:05 Bobby was more my age. And obviously Bobby was an incredible player at St. Anthony's
01:29:11 at Duke. And unfortunately his career in the NBA was, was, was cut short. But yeah, I mean
01:29:17 that era of, you know, that, that tri-state New York city, New Jersey basketball was,
01:29:22 was incredible. Yeah. Talentine high school who had, you know, Malik Sealy, Brian Reese,
01:29:26 Adrian Autry, you had Kenny Anderson at Malloy.
01:29:30 There were a lot of great players in that area at that time. And I always look forward
01:29:35 to playing against a guy like Bobby because he was considered one of the best point guards
01:29:38 in the country.
01:29:39 Yeah. Tough, tough New Jersey high school players into coaches are having a big moment
01:29:44 right now. The other, the other one I had for you was your start in coaching Greg Campy,
01:29:51 who just won his first NCAA tournament game with our guy, Jack Golke. Did you talk to
01:29:57 him after at all? Because that was, that was a very cool moment. And for people who don't
01:30:01 know, you, you basically got your start like doing anything for him way back in the day
01:30:06 at Oakland university. He's been there for 40 years and he finally gets that one big
01:30:10 moment beating Kentucky.
01:30:11 Well, I, you know what the great thing is. So I got that job at Oakland because my father
01:30:17 was an assistant coach in Detroit with Chuck Daly and they used to practice at Oakland
01:30:21 university. So my father had a relationship with Campy. And when I was getting out of
01:30:25 college, I wanted to get into coaching and my father putting a good word with Greg Campy
01:30:30 who hired me. Now Oakland was division two at the time, but I was a volunteer assistant
01:30:34 coach. And the coolest part about that job was Barry Sanders used to come over and play
01:30:40 open gym. And here he is the greatest, arguably the greatest running back in NFL history who
01:30:45 loved hoops and having a chance to play with him was a, was a memory I'll never forget.
01:30:50 But coach Campy and I have stayed in touch. My father passed away this past October. Coach
01:30:55 Campy was one of the first guys to reach out to me. And when they beat Kentucky that night,
01:31:00 uh, I, I hit him up right away. I'm sure I was one of a thousand messages, but for him
01:31:05 to be there for 40 years and him to have that kind of a win behind the unbelievable shooting
01:31:10 of Jack bulky, uh, was incredible. And I was so happy for coach Campy, the, the Oakland
01:31:16 program and obviously coach can't be his entire family.
01:31:19 Yeah, wait, wait, we gotta, we, you just glossed over something. Barry Sanders playing pickup
01:31:23 basketball. What was his game like? Well, I tell you what, I couldn't get over the size
01:31:27 of his legs and the size of his neck. He was incredible athlete. Uh, and it's funny, man,
01:31:33 he was just, he was for the, the player he was and all the success he had and all the
01:31:38 records that he had very, very humble, very quiet, but love basketball, wanted to come
01:31:43 in. Uh, my sister Kelly actually worked for the lions that time at that time. So I got
01:31:48 to know him a little bit, uh, unbelievable person, just a humble, selfless love to hoop.
01:31:56 And you wouldn't eat if you didn't know who he was. Do you think he was just a regular
01:31:59 guy in there playing hoops? And that's what I loved about him. Yes, he was a great running
01:32:03 back who carried those lines teams for years. But, uh, I was just impressed with how he
01:32:08 carried himself as a man. What was his comp though? Player comp player
01:32:12 comp. Oh, I'm trying to think, uh, I don't know. Nate Robinson. Okay. Yeah, that's good.
01:32:18 Yeah. That's a very good one. Did he travel a lot? He just stopped dribbling
01:32:22 strong, explosive. Um, yeah, I, I dunno, Nate Robinson popped into my head. I like
01:32:29 that. Yeah. I mean, it'd be, it'd be amazing just to go try to guard Barry Sanders in any
01:32:33 sport would be incredible. Do you know, uh, Jack made sure he was on my team. Yeah. Smart.
01:32:39 That's a smart move. You should bring Gorky in for a tryout. Yeah. He needs a look. The
01:32:43 kid can shoot. Well, I tell you what, you'd be Brown who I got to know. My father was
01:32:47 on his staff back in the day. One of the greatest coaches in the history of the bat, a game
01:32:51 of basketball and Hubie Brown had a saying, shooting makes up for a multitude of sense.
01:32:57 If you can shoot the ball in today's game, there's a place for you. And what Jack Gorky
01:33:01 did on the biggest stage in the country was really, really impressive. And I, I think
01:33:06 there are a lot of Jack Gorky fans. I think it can't be even talked about it that night
01:33:11 after they won that game, people from Louisville were buying Oakland gear and rub it in the
01:33:19 Kentucky fans faces. Yeah. So let's give him a trial. Cause we were big Jack Gorky fans.
01:33:24 We actually had him in our office and we have a full court basketball court. So we, we,
01:33:27 he got to do a workout. We got to do some drills with him. He can shoot. We'll tell
01:33:31 you right now. We'll be your advanced scouts. I don't know. I don't know if you knew this
01:33:35 guy can shoot. Here's my question at a big cat BFT. Who is the better shooter? Who's
01:33:41 got the, who's got the, the, the, the shot. That would be big cat. Yeah. I'm more of a
01:33:45 facilitator. Yeah. You, you should listen next year, next season when you're in Chicago,
01:33:52 you should come by because we do run fives on Friday and it's probably the worst basketball
01:33:57 you could ever watch. It's like those when, when you run a pickup basketball and maybe
01:34:02 the first game is like a 15 minutes and then the second game everyone gets tired and it's
01:34:06 like 35 minutes to get to 11 and you're like, this is just atrocious to watch.
01:34:11 I look forward. I will stop by. If the schedule permits, I'd love to stop by and see you guys.
01:34:16 Yeah. Yeah. Coach is up. Um, I actually have a pointer for you. I know that you've accomplished
01:34:21 a lot as a coach. You can always get better though, right? We're always looking to improve
01:34:25 around the margins. You're great at, uh, at getting in the ref's face at giving them a
01:34:30 piece of your mind when you feel like your player has been fouled. They don't call it.
01:34:33 I saw it a couple of times that Aaron Gordon this year, you're not afraid to let the ref
01:34:36 have it, but there's one player that you don't do it enough for. And that's Yoke itch when
01:34:42 he's trying his like three quarter length three pointer when he's getting fouled and,
01:34:47 and they never call the foul on him and it's a foul to get them on the arm. I know that
01:34:51 the reps are like, Oh, this is weird. Why is he shooting it from the opposing foul line?
01:34:55 I think you need to get in the ref's face when they don't call that and let them know
01:34:58 that's a foul. Well, I tell you what, so to clarify, they
01:35:02 are calling the foul, but what they're not giving them is a free throws. They're saying
01:35:06 it's a non shooting foul. And I, as a funny thing is I've had a lot of conversations with
01:35:11 the refs as well as the league about it because I don't think people understand how smart
01:35:16 Nicola is. He sees that he sees it before it happens. And so he knows the player's about
01:35:22 to come up and he'll stop around 70 feet from the basket, raise up and let it go. And I
01:35:27 asked the ref one time, I said, be honest, the reason you're not giving him free throws
01:35:31 is because of where it happened. Because you know, well, what right-minded player is going
01:35:35 to shoot a shot 70 feet away? And I go, but you shouldn't be worried about the location.
01:35:40 It's more about, is he in his upward shooting motion? And it's an ongoing debate. And hopefully
01:35:46 at one point we'll be able to get that. But if I have to get thrown out one time, I obviously
01:35:50 I have no problem doing that. Yeah. Well, the day that he gets that call is
01:35:54 going to be incredible. It's going to be amazing. Trying for it for so long. It also might ruin
01:35:58 the NBA forever. The second that he gets that call, because then everyone's going to be
01:36:01 doing that. But I want to see it happen the first time.
01:36:03 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I want to see it as well. I think he deserves, he's probably run over
01:36:08 12 in those attempts and hopefully we'll get it one day.
01:36:11 Yeah. So speaking of Jokic, is there ever a time where you're like, Hey, can you shoot
01:36:16 more? Cause he's so good at sometimes, you know, like game will start and he's just facilitating
01:36:21 to everyone. And he's maybe passing up shots to get everyone else involved. Do you ever
01:36:26 have to say like, listen, thank you for passing to everyone, but I need you to shoot because
01:36:31 every time you shoot it, it goes in. Yeah. Well, he's one of the more efficient
01:36:36 players that we've ever seen. And that's why obviously he's a two time MVP and potentially
01:36:41 a three time MVP. Uh, but you know, there are times where I have to say, listen, you
01:36:45 need to be a little bit more aggressive. You know, certain teams choose to double team
01:36:49 him from the get go. All the teams choose to play him straight up. It's pick your poison
01:36:53 with him. Like we touched on earlier. Um, but there are, there are games where he's
01:36:59 such a great passer. He's always reading the defense and he wants to get other people involved.
01:37:03 That's why he's great because he's going to be one of the top three assists for game players
01:37:08 in the league every year. Uh, but yeah, sometimes it's like joke, you gotta, you gotta be more
01:37:12 aggressive. Look to attack before the double team or when you have one-on-one coverage,
01:37:16 go to work. He's proven to be unguardable and that's not a knock on anybody. That's
01:37:21 just speak to his greatness and his ability to find and solve any riddle thrown at him.
01:37:27 And we've seen him do it time and time again and none better than last year during our
01:37:31 run to the, to the finals and ultimately winning our championship. But, um, he is a great player.
01:37:37 He's a great passer. He's really unselfish. So usually I trust him 1000% to read the game
01:37:43 and play the game the way he sees, but there will be an occasional time where, yeah, Hey,
01:37:47 listen, like go to work and look, look to score. And, uh, and he, we know he can do
01:37:51 that. Yeah. And I think he's in really great shape too. I think that's a very underrated
01:37:55 part of his game is his conditioning. People look at him sometimes and he might not have
01:37:59 like the muscle definition on, on the biceps and some other guys have. Uh, but I, I feel
01:38:03 like people don't give him credit. Do you think he's, you think teams underestimate
01:38:07 how in shape he is? I couldn't agree with that more. And I think
01:38:11 the perfect example was you go back, uh, I think six years ago, our first time making
01:38:16 the playoffs, we had a game in Portland that went for overtimes. I think Nicola played
01:38:21 60 minutes and, uh, and I don't know how many players can do that and play effectively and
01:38:28 efficiently. Uh, but Nicola, you know, I think people always judge athleticism on how high
01:38:33 you can jump. Well, if that's the only way you're going to judge his athleticism, what
01:38:37 are you going to say? Nicola is not a great athlete, but it's more than just jumping.
01:38:42 It's hand eye coordination. It's, it's, um, the ability to have unbelievable stamina.
01:38:47 He loves horses and I say you like secretariat, man. He's got like a, a huge heart. Nicola
01:38:52 can run for days and uh, you look at how much we play him and now that's a playoffs are
01:38:57 about to start. How much more we're about to play him because we know that when he's
01:39:01 on the floor, good things tend to happen for us.
01:39:04 I think it goes back to that, that picture that always goes around with him as a kid.
01:39:07 And so people see that picture and they're like, Oh, this guy can't run, but no, he's,
01:39:10 he's always out there and he's always running. Yeah. I do think it works to your advantage
01:39:14 though that they, that sometimes teams don't really recognize how great of shape he's in.
01:39:18 Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
01:39:19 Well, I think the other thing that like you talk about the athleticism, I think the other
01:39:24 really common misperception about Nicole Yoke, he just, Oh, well, because he's not a good
01:39:30 athlete, he's not a good defender. And that I don't think that could be further from the
01:39:34 truth. I think Nicole is actually a very good defender and you don't have to be a good defender
01:39:38 to be a guy that's jumping and blocking shots above the rim. He has unbelievable hand-eye
01:39:43 coordination. He's one of the top guys in the NBA in terms of deflections. You guys
01:39:47 have seen him breaking up, break up a lot of passes with his feet and his timing anticipation.
01:39:54 He's one of the few players in the NBA that's got over a hundred steals and close to 70
01:39:59 blocks. So I think that's also an area that people try to pick him apart, but he's proven
01:40:04 people wrong time and time again.
01:40:06 So one thing you're a lead at, and I've read a bunch of stories and it's very clear when
01:40:10 you talk about your team is your ability to connect with each guy person to person. And
01:40:16 like the stories of you going to visit Yoke at his home. Did you ride a horse by the way
01:40:20 when you went there?
01:40:22 So I didn't ride the horse, but Nicola let me ride the carriage.
01:40:26 Okay. All right. That counts.
01:40:28 He took me to practice one day and he goes, coach, come on. And he told me what to do.
01:40:33 And I went around and he was really mad at me because he said it was a practice and I
01:40:38 was supposed to go a lot slower and I was like, man, her man, I was like, let's go.
01:40:43 And uh, but yeah, so I did that one time and it probably never let me do that again.
01:40:47 That's fantastic. So your ability to connect with guys, you know, one-on-one, you know,
01:40:51 when you, you had that quote about Jamal Murray's injuries and how he's going to be back, I
01:40:56 think, you know, when it comes to coaching, the best coaches are able to get their teams
01:41:00 to trust them on such a level that it's like, you know, what I'm doing is going to get you
01:41:04 to a place where you can win a championship.
01:41:07 Was there a moment in these last few years where you could feel like my team is finally
01:41:12 in, like they're finally all have bought into what I'm selling and they all are going to
01:41:17 trust me no matter what I say, they might not agree all the time, but they trust that
01:41:21 what I'm doing is trying to put them in the best spot.
01:41:24 Yeah. I mean, that's a really good question.
01:41:28 Thank you.
01:41:29 I go back to, you know, the bubble, but even our first time making the playoffs, you know,
01:41:36 we played San Antonio in the first round and here we are playing the Spurs, right?
01:41:41 And coach Popovich and we won in seven games and that was brand new for Jamal.
01:41:46 That was brand new for me.
01:41:47 That was brand new for Nicola.
01:41:49 And I think that's really helped that Nicola and I've been together for nine years.
01:41:52 Jamal and I have been together for eight and then we've added pieces around.
01:41:56 I think Aaron Gordon's been here for four and a half now, Michael Porter for five.
01:42:00 So what you have with that continuity creates chemistry and trust.
01:42:05 So I've never felt like I had to like win them over.
01:42:10 I felt like we've always been connected and for me, it's never been, this is what we're
01:42:15 doing and it's my way of the highway.
01:42:17 What I learned from a guy like coach Popovich is when we talk about trust as part of our
01:42:22 culture, I got to trust our players.
01:42:24 So last year during our run to the finals, we're going through games and scouting reports
01:42:29 and opposing plays.
01:42:30 I'm giving our players input.
01:42:32 What do you guys see?
01:42:33 What do you want to do in this play?
01:42:35 So now I'm empowering them so we all feel a part of it.
01:42:39 And so I'm not a dictator.
01:42:40 I'm very much a coach that wants to give our players input and not so I hope it fails,
01:42:47 but hey, you're out there playing.
01:42:49 And I think through all those conversations and all the time that we've been together,
01:42:54 I think that's allowed us to get to a place where we trust each other.
01:42:58 It's not just them trusting me.
01:42:59 I also trust our players and we have great dialogue within that.
01:43:04 So off that question, you mentioned Aaron Gordon, who has been phenomenal for you guys.
01:43:09 And what is it though, putting a guy like Aaron Gordon, who is with the magic, he's
01:43:13 the best guy in the magic.
01:43:14 Then he comes to the nuggets and his role is going to be a little different and he's
01:43:18 not the best guy anymore, but you need him to play winning basketball.
01:43:22 How does that process work when you have a new guy on the team and you're like, look,
01:43:26 you were the man, you're still the man, but there's other guys here who are going to be
01:43:31 the man and you're going to play off them a little bit more.
01:43:33 Well, I think Aaron Gordon deserves the credit here.
01:43:36 I mean, I could sit here and say, hey, we had conversations about this and that, which
01:43:40 we did, but ultimately it's up to the man.
01:43:42 It's up to the person, the player to understand I'm coming to a team that's really good.
01:43:48 They've won, they haven't won at the highest level yet, but I can help them get over the
01:43:52 hump.
01:43:53 And the funny thing is right when we got Aaron Gordon after that trade deadline, we beat
01:43:57 the Clippers in LA when they were fully loaded and healthy.
01:44:01 And that's when I think we all realized that we got a chance if we stay healthy to win
01:44:05 and win big and win a championship.
01:44:07 Unfortunately, injuries happen that year, the year after, but then we finally had that
01:44:12 chance last season.
01:44:13 But Aaron came in understanding that, listen, I'm going to do whatever it takes to help
01:44:18 this team.
01:44:19 I'm playing next to a great player who's one of the most unselfish players, highest IQs
01:44:25 and great passers.
01:44:26 I'm just going to play off of him.
01:44:27 I'm going to play off of Jamal Murray.
01:44:29 I'm going to defend, I'm going to rebound, and I'm going to be completely selfless in
01:44:33 everything I do.
01:44:34 And I think guys like Aaron Gordon, guys like KCP embody being truly selfless every single
01:44:42 day because when people talk about the Nuggets, it's Nicole Jokic, it's Jamal Murray, and
01:44:48 Michael Porter, Aaron Gordon, KCP don't get as much of the attention, but they're all
01:44:53 just as important in our success.
01:44:55 Yeah.
01:44:56 I mean, it's awesome watching a team come together like that where you have pieces from
01:44:59 all over the place and it's everyone kind of steps into their role.
01:45:02 It's beautiful to watch when basketball works that way.
01:45:05 Yeah.
01:45:06 And Christian Brown too.
01:45:07 You mentioned him earlier, I guess, a spark X factor.
01:45:10 Is he, what would he have to do to get into like the starting rotation?
01:45:13 Cause I know he's great in certain aspects of his game.
01:45:16 I think, I think I've heard you talk about him in transition before and how that is a
01:45:21 key factor in his game.
01:45:23 Is that a guy that you see ever becoming a rotation guy?
01:45:25 Well, I mean, he's the rotation guy for us now.
01:45:27 And when we've had injuries, he started a bunch of games for us this year.
01:45:31 His versatility is what you love about him.
01:45:33 He can be a small forward, a two guard.
01:45:36 And he's actually been when Jamal was out for a while this year, Christian has been
01:45:40 our backup point guard at times.
01:45:41 So there's not a position he can't play.
01:45:45 And you talk about transition.
01:45:46 I felt probably maybe halfway through the season, Christian wasn't playing the way I
01:45:52 was hoping he would have played this year.
01:45:54 He didn't have the same aggression, didn't have the same defensive disposition that I
01:45:59 thought he needed to have.
01:46:01 And I called him in.
01:46:02 We met, we watched film from last year of how he helped us win, even clips from him
01:46:08 in the NBA finals.
01:46:09 And I said, this is what we need from you.
01:46:12 For you to be the best player for this team, we need you to be more aggressive.
01:46:16 We need you to be tougher.
01:46:17 We need you to be more disciplined and to lock down on defense.
01:46:22 And to his credit, from that meeting through the end of the season, I thought he was tremendous
01:46:26 for us.
01:46:27 He's put a lot of time into his game.
01:46:28 He's shooting a three ball really well.
01:46:30 He is a hell of a finisher.
01:46:32 If you go back to that Minnesota game, some of the dunks he had in transition were just
01:46:36 incredible.
01:46:37 Highlight dunks with his left hand on a guy like Rudy Gobert.
01:46:42 But he's an important piece because he can fill so many holes.
01:46:45 And for me with Christian, CB is what we call him, it's always about his intangibles, man.
01:46:50 He's got an edge to him.
01:46:51 He's one at every level.
01:46:52 I wanted to go out there and just be a dog and get after people, hit people, be aggressive.
01:46:58 And when he does that, he's a difference maker.
01:47:00 The other young guy that I think has really improved this year is Peyton Watson.
01:47:05 Peyton Watson is doing things defensively, blocking shots at the rim.
01:47:10 A lot of plays defensively that most guys in league can't make.
01:47:14 So Peyton didn't play at all last year.
01:47:16 He's in the rotation this year and it's going to be a great opportunity for him in these
01:47:20 coming playoffs to really step up because we all know the playoffs is a lot different
01:47:24 than the 82 game regular season.
01:47:27 You guys got a lot of weapons.
01:47:28 Coach, we asked this question to everybody.
01:47:30 It's a fun little segment that we do.
01:47:32 It's called, it's called, who would you rather play in the first round of the playoffs?
01:47:37 The Kings, the Warriors, the Pelicans or the Lakers?
01:47:40 Well the lucky, the good thing for us is that we know we're either playing the Lakers or
01:47:43 the Pelicans.
01:47:44 Tonight they have their playing game down in New Orleans tonight and we're going to,
01:47:50 I like to play whoever wins that game.
01:47:53 Okay.
01:47:54 That's smart.
01:47:55 That's what's going to happen.
01:47:56 Yeah.
01:47:57 Yeah.
01:47:58 That's a good answer.
01:47:59 Good answer.
01:48:00 Yeah.
01:48:01 That's the best answer we've ever had in that segment.
01:48:02 Yeah.
01:48:03 All right.
01:48:04 So I had a couple of last questions.
01:48:05 So we're ball knowers.
01:48:07 We know ball.
01:48:09 And these West playoffs are going to be great.
01:48:11 There's so many talented teams.
01:48:12 The one seed though, the Thunder, they have had an incredible season.
01:48:17 Some people, non ball knowers are being like, well, they're too young.
01:48:21 They don't know how to get through the playoffs.
01:48:24 We obviously know that they're so talented.
01:48:26 They could, any team could win the West.
01:48:29 Playing them though and seeing like their young talent kind of go from, you know, they
01:48:32 were not a playoff team last year.
01:48:34 Now they're in the playoffs.
01:48:35 Obviously that had to do with a lot of injuries, guys coming back.
01:48:38 But how, like how impressive is it watching a team that young?
01:48:41 I think their, their roster age is like 23 years old.
01:48:44 It's pretty crazy.
01:48:45 Oh, it really is.
01:48:46 And one, you have to give credit to Sam Presti.
01:48:48 Their GM has done a terrific job of, you know, handling the roster and, and, and building
01:48:53 that roster up to what we see today.
01:48:56 Very young, but very talented, a lot of high lottery picks in there.
01:49:00 And it's not just about bringing talent in.
01:49:02 They brought talent in that fits, that compliments each other.
01:49:05 Then you go down to Mark Dagnall, who I think is coach of the year in the NBA.
01:49:09 I think he's done an outstanding job of building that team on both ends of the floor.
01:49:15 And then you mentioned the players.
01:49:16 I mean, Shea Gilgis Alexander is an MVP candidate for a reason.
01:49:22 Unbelievable talent can score the ball, can guard.
01:49:24 I think he led the league in steals.
01:49:27 You have Chet Holmgren who unfortunately is in a rookie class, but Victor Wiminyama, but
01:49:31 Chet Holmgren, we look at his upside and his ability to impact offense and defense.
01:49:38 Young Jalen Williams, that guy is just, he's becoming a go-to player for him.
01:49:43 He'll be a future all-star in my opinion.
01:49:46 Lou Dortz, one of the best defenders in the NBA.
01:49:49 And I give a guy like Josh Giddey so much credit.
01:49:51 There was so much noise around him early in the year with the investigation, all the stuff
01:49:55 off the court.
01:49:57 He was being booed in every arena he played in.
01:50:00 And he fought through that.
01:50:01 And I think he's quietly a really important piece to that team because he can play make,
01:50:07 he rebounds, he defends, and he makes all of his teammates better.
01:50:11 So I don't buy into the whole they're too young to win it.
01:50:14 Last year, people thought, well, we've never won a championship.
01:50:17 They can't win a finals.
01:50:18 And I go back to year one, we beat the Spurs in round one and we took the Blazers to game
01:50:23 seven in the second round.
01:50:26 They have the talent, they have the coaching, and I think these Western Conference playoffs
01:50:30 are just going to be so fun to watch.
01:50:32 I would not be surprised if there are a ton of upsets.
01:50:34 Yeah, it's going to be crazy to watch.
01:50:37 Have you done any breakdowns or even thought, allowed yourself to think about the best teams
01:50:42 in the East?
01:50:43 Or are you just in the mindset of, let's handle our business in the West?
01:50:46 Yeah, I mean, I'm just locked into the Western Conference.
01:50:49 The funny thing is, going into our game against Memphis, game 82, all the games in the West
01:50:55 started at the same time.
01:50:56 And I knew all the different, like, this team wins or this team.
01:51:00 In the East, I knew Boston was one, and after that, I had no idea what was going on.
01:51:05 So it's going to be hard enough getting out of the first round this year.
01:51:09 So we're going to take it one round at a time.
01:51:12 And if we're able to get out of the Western Conference again, then we'll turn our attention
01:51:15 to whoever's coming out of the Eastern Conference.
01:51:17 Yeah, all right.
01:51:18 So I had one last question.
01:51:19 It's a rollback question.
01:51:20 RHOBACK.com promo code take 20% off your first purchase.
01:51:24 Q-Zips, polos, hoodies, joggers, shorts, everything.
01:51:26 ROWBACK.COM promo code take.
01:51:28 So we talked about the Hurleys.
01:51:30 Have you thought about maybe getting on the court and pushing a player during action?
01:51:36 No.
01:51:37 Did Danny do that?
01:51:39 Yeah, he did that in the finals with like, when they were up 15 with three minutes left,
01:51:43 he just kind of blacked out and he pushed Cam Spencer to be like, go and run the play.
01:51:50 Have you ever caught yourself getting too far onto the sideline?
01:51:53 Shaka Smart does it as well, where he's basically a six guy out there playing defense in the
01:51:57 corner.
01:51:58 But have you ever had to like stop yourself and be like, oh, I'm basically standing on
01:52:02 the court right now?
01:52:03 Yeah.
01:52:04 I mean, sometimes I'm like, you know, the scene in old school, I'm having an out of
01:52:09 body experience, man.
01:52:10 I find myself like, why am I on the other side of half court coaching my team?
01:52:16 Years ago, Terry Stotts was coaching in Portland at the time.
01:52:19 He took a screenshot of our game and I was all the way on the other side of the court
01:52:24 in the other coaching box.
01:52:27 Sometimes my wife and my daughters will make fun of me because as the game is going on,
01:52:32 that's why I like, we don't have to wear suits anymore.
01:52:35 I can get in a defensive stance and do my slide up and down the sideline.
01:52:40 Like I'm guarding, like I'm having any impact on the game.
01:52:42 No, it does.
01:52:43 That does.
01:52:44 That absolutely has an impact.
01:52:45 The coach getting up and slapping the floor a couple of times.
01:52:49 That's that absolutely has an impact.
01:52:51 I think the players probably laugh at it, but I think they respect it.
01:52:54 I'm not a guy like there are certain coaches that you look on the sideline, they'll be
01:52:58 over there sitting on the bench with their legs crossed.
01:53:01 Yeah.
01:53:02 And I actually said to my assistants, if I ever sit on a bench with my legs crossed,
01:53:05 punch me in my face.
01:53:06 I said, I am a coach.
01:53:08 I'm into the game.
01:53:09 It's an emotional game.
01:53:11 And you know, you're all competitors, man.
01:53:14 You don't get to this level if you're not a competitor.
01:53:16 And you know, sometimes I definitely overdo it and I got to remind myself to calm down
01:53:22 a little bit.
01:53:23 But at the end of the day, like my mother always tells me, you got to be yourself.
01:53:26 And that's what I try to do.
01:53:27 Yeah.
01:53:28 Maybe if you just get one technical, then have, have the Jokic brothers be your get
01:53:31 back guy.
01:53:32 And so if you get too far out there, they come down, they grab you back.
01:53:35 Well, that was one of my best moments last year of winning the Western conference final
01:53:39 NBA was going to hug and the mind you and stride, you know, Nicola's big brothers and
01:53:45 really big brothers and them taking me like a rag doll and thrown in there.
01:53:50 And I mean, those are moments that you'll never, ever forget.
01:53:54 And that's why I love about our group.
01:53:56 It's not just our players, but we have a very connected group and I love being a part of
01:54:00 it.
01:54:01 We're going to get some more of those moments coming up in the next couple of months.
01:54:05 Coach, we really appreciate your time.

01:54:21 If not, I will see you guys in Chicago and always being a great being on with you guys.
01:54:26 And let's do it again soon.
01:54:27 All right.
01:54:28 Thanks coach.
01:54:29 Appreciate it.
01:54:30 And don't you ever release anyone who says, Mike, we got you.

01:55:26 Okay, we'll wrap up the show.
01:55:28 Fire Fest, I'll actually go first this week with my Fire Fest because it's the fact that
01:55:31 we have a gambling turtle that's going to probably cost me a lot of money.
01:55:34 Well, he's 0 and 1 right now.
01:55:36 0 and 1.
01:55:37 I want to know on the money line.
01:55:38 I wish there was some sort of metaphor though, big cat, for something like kid's fable that
01:55:44 started out very slow, reminded us that this was a marathon, not a sprint.
01:55:48 Okay, so I have to stick with Mr. Perry, you're saying?
01:55:52 He might be the money line guy.
01:55:53 We don't know.
01:55:54 We might have gotten accidentally a money line turtle.
01:55:56 Tortoise.
01:55:57 Tortoise.
01:55:58 Is it tortoise?
01:55:59 He's a Russian tortoise.
01:56:00 All tortoises are turtles.
01:56:01 Is that true?
01:56:02 Can we say tortoise?
01:56:03 So, Max told you that.
01:56:04 All tortoises are turtles?
01:56:09 Where'd you find that out?
01:56:11 No, no, no.
01:56:17 All tortoises are turtles, not all turtles are tortoises.
01:56:19 So he's a tortoise, but also a turtle?
01:56:23 So that might have been the turtle pick that he did yesterday.
01:56:27 He's looking so cute, Mr. Perry.
01:56:29 He's very gorgeous.
01:56:30 Mr. Perry.
01:56:31 What's on his mouth?
01:56:32 Yeah, he's looking- It's calcium.
01:56:35 He's got a lot of white stuff on his mouth.
01:56:36 Calcium?
01:56:37 What has he been doing?
01:56:38 He been drinking milk?
01:56:39 No, it's calcium powder.
01:56:40 They need it for the shell.
01:56:42 Wait, so you put that on him?
01:56:44 No, you put it on his food and then- Oh, no way.
01:56:47 Look at you, Memes.
01:56:48 He looks like a coke guy.
01:56:49 Memes is really, he's doing a great job as a papa.
01:56:52 Zoom in on his face and just make the I fucking love cocaine meme out of him.
01:56:56 Look at this guy.
01:56:57 Why do you have a- Excuse me.
01:56:58 Why do you have a jersey underneath?
01:57:01 Did he poop on you and cum on you?
01:57:05 Apparently, that's what their pee looks like.
01:57:08 Is white?
01:57:09 Okay.
01:57:10 And what if it's a female tortoise, though?
01:57:14 Squirt.
01:57:15 We don't know if he's female.
01:57:17 Yeah.
01:57:18 It's a mister.
01:57:19 Oh, you've checked it?
01:57:20 Nope.
01:57:21 Oh, okay.
01:57:22 So we don't know.
01:57:23 So that's my fire fest is that whatever this turtle picks, I'm going to bet, and we've
01:57:29 somehow gotten ourselves back into this situation where a turtle is now deciding whether I win
01:57:33 or lose money.
01:57:35 He's going to be good.
01:57:36 Yeah.
01:57:37 All right.
01:57:38 So he's going to pick the Bulls Heat game.
01:57:39 Hank, why don't you go with your fire fest while Mr. Pear picks?
01:57:44 No real fire fest for me.
01:57:45 I mean, the sleeping the other day, dozing off, not great.
01:57:48 Yeah, especially after you slept until 11.30 on last Thursday.
01:57:51 Yeah, I might have a sleep problem.
01:57:52 I've just been waking up early, which I think is a good thing long term.
01:57:55 Okay.
01:57:56 He's not moving at all.
01:57:58 He's taking his time.
01:57:59 He's not moving.
01:58:00 All right, Hank, you just let us know.
01:58:01 Keep going with your fire fest.
01:58:02 I'm just addicted to watching old masters broadcast before I go to bed, and that's
01:58:08 been keeping me up.
01:58:09 What have you been watching?
01:58:10 Have you seen Scotty Stradler?
01:58:11 No.
01:58:12 Craig Stradler.
01:58:13 Craig Stadler.
01:58:14 I've been like 2002.
01:58:15 It's their four hour broadcast, but I'm like, I'll just turn this on and fall asleep, and
01:58:20 I watch for like two hours.
01:58:21 You get really into it.
01:58:22 Yeah.
01:58:23 You are addicted to golf.
01:58:25 It's good.
01:58:26 It's good.
01:58:27 It's a good watch.
01:58:28 Gym dance.
01:58:29 He hasn't moved.
01:58:30 He has not moved, folks.
01:58:31 Not one.
01:58:32 He has not moved.
01:58:33 I think if he doesn't move by the end of the fire fest, we have to just do a game to go
01:58:38 to overtime.
01:58:39 Yeah.
01:58:40 So wait, why don't we put food down?
01:58:41 Yeah, put some food down.
01:58:43 He's not going to move if there's...
01:58:44 Or Max, just show him your ass.
01:58:46 All right.
01:58:47 So no fire fest is just Hank's watching too much golf.
01:58:50 Yeah.
01:58:51 Okay.
01:58:52 PFT, good fire fest.
01:58:54 My fair fest, kind of along the same lines of...
01:58:57 Also taxes.
01:58:58 I did file an extension.
01:58:59 I would like to clear for the record.
01:59:01 Why?
01:59:02 Were people asking?
01:59:03 Yeah.
01:59:04 Well, people were chirping me and they're saying I'm going to get audited and shit.
01:59:06 I take the most out of my taxes so that I don't have to...
01:59:10 To taxes?
01:59:12 Not do taxes, but so it's not like, "Oh fuck, I'm going to be down."
01:59:15 Oh, here he's moving.
01:59:16 He's going to the heat.
01:59:17 Oh no, he's going to the heat.
01:59:19 He might...
01:59:20 He only turns right so far.
01:59:21 Yeah, we're going to have to figure this problem out.
01:59:23 He's not an ambi-turner.
01:59:24 Okay, keep going, Hank.
01:59:25 So you did your taxes, even though you did them late?
01:59:29 They're on the way.
01:59:30 We're good.
01:59:31 What's today's date?
01:59:32 It's the 18th.
01:59:34 Do you owe money?
01:59:36 I will owe money, but I'm not going to get like...
01:59:39 They were late.
01:59:40 Go to jail.
01:59:41 Okay.
01:59:42 And if I have to pay a fine, I pay a fine.
01:59:43 All right, PFT, what's yours?
01:59:45 Along the same lines as just the tortoise that stinks at gambling, I tried to do something
01:59:50 good and tried to get some advice and learn from experts on tortoises so we can find out
01:59:55 more about our beloved Mr. Pear.
01:59:57 And I signed up for an account on tortoise forums.
02:00:01 And a lot of hot discussion going on in tortoise forums, tortoises in the news, advanced tortoise
02:00:05 topics.
02:00:06 And I made a post there under advanced tortoise topics asking for advice with a gambling tortoise,
02:00:12 because I assume this is a problem they've dealt with in the past.
02:00:15 They know which types are good, which types are not good.
02:00:18 I got banned from tortoise forum.
02:00:19 What?
02:00:20 They hit me with a ban hammer.
02:00:21 The mods came after me after about...
02:00:23 It was one post.
02:00:24 You're the John Tay Porter of tortoise forum.
02:00:27 And I specifically said, "We're not doing weird sex stuff with them," because I know
02:00:30 a lot of those freaks on the tortoise message boards are into weird sex stuff.
02:00:35 Yep, you let that be known.
02:00:36 I let that be known and I had several real questions about the tortoise and then they
02:00:41 hit me with a ban hammer right off the bat.
02:00:43 So I'm no longer blocked by OJ, but I am banned by tortoise forum.
02:00:48 Wait, OJ unblocked you?
02:00:49 No, he's dead.
02:00:50 So he's not blocking me.
02:00:51 Right, but is his account?
02:00:53 No, but he can't be blocking me if he's dead.
02:00:57 But his account's still blocked.
02:00:58 The account still blocks me.
02:00:59 Yeah, we got to get that fixed.
02:01:00 No, I'm okay with that.
02:01:01 I'm okay.
02:01:02 I wear that as a badge.
02:01:03 But the tortoise forum thing, it's a real issue because we are going to have questions
02:01:06 about it and that's the place to go to get your questions answered.
02:01:09 I'll sign up.
02:01:10 Yeah, you should.
02:01:11 Yeah, and then do a little intro post about yourself.
02:01:13 Yeah, not trying to have sex with any turtle.
02:01:16 No sex stuff.
02:01:17 We've been very clear about that.
02:01:19 Maybe I'll say, "Listen guys, I'm not trying to have sex with my turtle.
02:01:24 He also is a tortoise.
02:01:25 We're not going to talk about that part."
02:01:26 Yeah.
02:01:27 Just let everyone know.
02:01:28 Yeah.
02:01:29 We're separate.
02:01:30 I looked around on the forum though and there's some great, great topics like, "What did your
02:01:33 tortoise do during the eclipse?" was a hot one.
02:01:35 That was in the advanced topic section.
02:01:37 He's turning back to the middle.
02:01:38 He's turning?
02:01:39 Oh.
02:01:40 He's 50/50.
02:01:41 He's trying to escape.
02:01:42 Trying to escape.
02:01:43 I think he's leaving.
02:01:44 Yeah, he's leaving.
02:01:45 This guy, Mr. Pear, he's got a problem.
02:01:49 We can ... If he leaves, we can say no pick.
02:01:53 He's looking for bulls.
02:01:54 He's looking for bulls?
02:01:55 He's like 60% bulls right now.
02:01:56 Okay.
02:01:57 All right.
02:01:58 All right.
02:01:59 Yeah, I don't really have a fire fest other than Mr. Pear.
02:02:03 You want to do a Taylor Swift album review?
02:02:05 Yeah.
02:02:06 Crash.
02:02:07 Wait, no.
02:02:08 Actually, no, I don't because it isn't officially out yet, right?
02:02:11 But it's out by the time this is released.
02:02:12 But Swifties have been very upset about leaks.
02:02:15 Oh.
02:02:16 They've been doxing each other.
02:02:17 They've been infighting in the Swifties.
02:02:19 Well, I did hear one song that I did not care for on the album.
02:02:23 Okay.
02:02:24 So wait, you listened to it before it came out?
02:02:26 No, I was forced to listen to it.
02:02:28 Okay.
02:02:29 I was forced to listen to it.
02:02:30 Are there any music videos?
02:02:31 Somebody kidnapped me and they said, "You have to listen to this."
02:02:33 I said, "No, Taylor's queen.
02:02:35 Let's not take away from her streams."
02:02:36 Yeah.
02:02:37 Is there any videos I could watch?
02:02:39 I don't have any videos of it.
02:02:41 Okay.
02:02:42 Just yet.
02:02:43 Let me know when it's in video form.
02:02:44 I've heard that there might be a very interesting video of her and somebody else.
02:02:47 Oh.
02:02:48 I'll be watching.
02:02:49 There's one song that I don't like at all and I don't think anyone should listen to.
02:02:53 It's about how her boyfriend's friend is super annoying and always trying to get him to schedule
02:02:57 things and trying to get him to stop coming to her concerts, trying to get him out to
02:03:01 drink beers and just carry on and be a big psycho, dumb jock.
02:03:06 Don't listen to that.
02:03:07 I don't know who her boyfriend is, but he has one bad, really bad influence of a friend
02:03:11 that's very unorganized.
02:03:12 Yeah.
02:03:13 Okay.
02:03:14 So whatever that song's about, I don't like it.
02:03:15 Yep.
02:03:16 Agreed.
02:03:17 Jake, finish us off.
02:03:18 Is he just not moving yet?
02:03:19 He's not moving.
02:03:20 He's in the middle.
02:03:21 It might be a no pick.
02:03:22 Or we could just keep it running.
02:03:23 He's facing the bulls, but he's in the dead center.
02:03:25 Yeah.
02:03:26 We'll keep him going.
02:03:27 Come on, Mr. Bear.
02:03:28 Come on, Mr. Bear.
02:03:29 Can't rush greatness.
02:03:30 All right, Jake, what's your favorite place?
02:03:31 The other day, I was walking back from the grocery store and it started pouring right
02:03:35 in the middle of the walk.
02:03:36 Oh, I didn't really like to get wet.
02:03:38 We did have a couple of crazy weather days.
02:03:41 Thanks, Hank.
02:03:42 Oh, that's our baseball game canceled.
02:03:44 Yeah, but there was one day where it was raining, then 70 degrees and raining again.
02:03:50 It's nice, little mix it up.
02:03:53 Weather's been fine.
02:03:54 It's been fucking 70.
02:03:55 No, there's just one day where it's just a little rain.
02:03:58 Did you just do your Mr. Pear voice to me?
02:04:02 I'm excited for your softball team.
02:04:03 I want to play.
02:04:04 I also think Hank is not going to be a good pitcher.
02:04:07 He's not taking it seriously.
02:04:10 I asked who was pitching and everyone was like, "I don't know."
02:04:12 And then it seems like you're pitching.
02:04:15 I'm going to come and- I'm going to come.
02:04:18 Don't come.
02:04:19 I'm going to come.
02:04:20 Don't come.
02:04:21 And Max, are you the manager?
02:04:22 Pug.
02:04:23 Pug's the manager?
02:04:24 We're the Pugs.
02:04:25 Pug, will there be a short hook on Hank if he's not throwing strikes?
02:04:29 Yeah, it's a zero tolerance policy.
02:04:32 Love that.
02:04:33 All right, I'll be ready.
02:04:34 I'm going to-
02:04:35 Well, it's softball, so they're going to get hit.
02:04:37 Strikes is one thing.
02:04:38 I'm fine with that.
02:04:39 Well, no, if you don't throw strikes, they're just going to walk on you.
02:04:42 No, I'm saying that's fine.
02:04:43 Yeah.
02:04:44 If we're giving up runs, there's nothing I can do.
02:04:45 That's my fielders.
02:04:46 I don't know about that.
02:04:47 It's softball.
02:04:48 Sounds like you're okay with getting shelled.
02:04:49 Yeah.
02:04:50 Sounds like you're giving up meatballs.
02:04:52 It's softball.
02:04:53 I have no choice.
02:04:54 Sounds like you're throwing it too slow.
02:04:55 I have no choice.
02:04:56 We'll see.
02:04:57 It's game zero.
02:04:58 Cut me some slack.
02:04:59 I'm going to put a big starter jacket just over my right arm.
02:05:01 I'll be ready.
02:05:02 Maybe I'll just sit in my car.
02:05:04 We should find out-
02:05:05 I hate waiting.
02:05:06 We should find out what teams are playing against Hank, and then we should get you in
02:05:09 the starting lineup for one of those teams.
02:05:11 Just take pitches.
02:05:12 Take pitches.
02:05:13 Take Hank.
02:05:14 Take him yard.
02:05:15 Yeah.
02:05:16 No, just take pitches.
02:05:17 Walks are way more embarrassing.
02:05:18 Grab the plate.
02:05:19 Oh.
02:05:20 Oh.
02:05:21 Is he going?
02:05:22 Not really.
02:05:23 He popped his head out.
02:05:25 I found how you can tell the difference between a male and a female tortoise online.
02:05:30 Should we check?
02:05:31 Yeah.
02:05:32 Maybe he doesn't like the food that's being presented.
02:05:35 What is it?
02:05:36 Lettuce?
02:05:37 Let's check next time he does a pick, because he's already in the middle of a pick right
02:05:40 now.
02:05:41 We can't rush this.
02:05:42 Yeah.
02:05:43 This might take a while.
02:05:44 All right.
02:05:45 Should we do numbers, and then you just want- someone just want to stay with the camera,
02:05:47 and we can just have our pick be whenever he decides?
02:05:50 Yep.
02:05:51 And maybe Max or Meme say what the pick is after we do numbers, so people who are listening
02:05:56 can get the pick.
02:05:57 That's fair?
02:05:58 All right.
02:05:59 Numbers.
02:06:00 Oh, he's walking towards the bulls.
02:06:01 Eight.
02:06:02 Go, Mr. Pear.
02:06:03 Go, Mr. Pear.
02:06:04 Oh.
02:06:05 Go, Mr. Pear.
02:06:06 Go, Mr. Pear.
02:06:07 He's going.
02:06:08 Oh, that's a big move.
02:06:09 He's going.
02:06:10 He's hauling ass.
02:06:11 He's doing it.
02:06:12 He's doing it.
02:06:13 And bulls.
02:06:14 Yes, bulls.
02:06:15 Let's go, Mr. Pear.
02:06:16 Let's go, Mr. Pear.
02:06:17 Mr. Pear.
02:06:18 How did he told you guys?
02:06:19 Yeah.
02:06:20 He told us.
02:06:21 Yeah.
02:06:22 Fuck.
02:06:23 That was actually good to know that he can go the other way.
02:06:25 And he was very torn on it.
02:06:28 He actually probably, you can probably put in the graphics when he found out that Jimmy
02:06:31 Butler was out.
02:06:32 Oh, yeah.
02:06:33 Because he started going to the heat.
02:06:34 Yeah, he's eating.
