00:00 India has kicked off the world's largest election with Prime Minister Narendra Modi vying for
00:06 an unprecedented third term, leveraging economic growth, welfare schemes, his charismatic appeal
00:13 and Hindu nationalism.
00:16 Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party faces a coalition of opposition parties offering
00:20 affirmative action, increased welfare and protection of democratic institutions from
00:24 what they perceive as Modi's authoritarian governance.
00:28 Today morning, the voting commenced in 102 seats across India, including states like
00:33 Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and so on.
00:37 Spread over seven phases in scorching summer heat, nearly 1 billion voters will be participating
00:42 in the elections with vote counting on 4th of June.
00:45 The first phase involves 166 million voters in 102 constituencies across 21 states and
00:51 territories.
00:52 Despite concerns over unemployment and rural distress, survey predicts a BJP majority.
00:57 Modi's election manifesto promises to propel India to the top three economy, eradicate
01:02 poverty and enact pro-people reforms.
01:05 Emphasising Modi's leadership, the BJP campaign has also been titled as 'Modi ki guarantee',
01:09 adopting a presidential-style approach in a parliamentary system seeking a historic
01:13 third consecutive term for Modi akin to post-independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru.
01:19 Modi positions his previous terms as mere appetisers promising a grander vision for
01:23 India's future.
01:25 Indian rhetoric also highlighted achievements like Article 370 abrogation, lunar exploration
01:29 and anti-corruption efforts too.
01:31 Meanwhile, the opposition led by the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress Party frames the election
01:36 as an ideological struggle to preserve democracy against BJP's alleged authoritarianism.
01:41 However, opposition unity is marred by internal divisions, allegations of government repression
01:47 including arrest and tax demand of opposition figures.
01:51 And this all is casting a shadow over the electoral process.
01:54 Despite this, the real challenge, including anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP benefits
01:58 from a weak and fragmented opposition.
02:00 But will they win?
02:01 Well, for that, we all have to wait till 4th of June when the results will be declared.
