An Assyrian bishop who was stabbed during a service at his Sydney church this week said on Thursday (April 18) he was recovering quickly and that he had forgiven his attacker.

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel made the comments in an audio message posted on social media, his first since the attack that occurred during a livestreamed church service on Monday (April 15).

00:00 This is Bishop Murray Emmanuel, addressing our beloved faithfuls, whoever you are and wherever you are.
00:08 I'm doing fine, recovering very quickly, we think, the Lord Jesus, so there is no need to be worried or concerned.
00:18 And a piece of advice to our beloved faithfuls, I need you to act Christ-like.
00:26 The Lord Jesus never taught us to fight, the Lord Jesus never taught us to retaliate,
00:32 the Lord Jesus never said to us, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."
00:36 The Lord Jesus said, "Never return evil with evil, but return evil with good."
00:44 So my beloveds, I want you to always be calm.
00:49 We need to be always law-abiding citizens as well.
00:54 We need to cooperate with the police directives, whether it be at a state level or a federal level.
01:01 We pray for our country, our beloved country, Australia, and our beautiful city of Sydney,
01:10 and we pray that the Lord Jesus always protects this country and the people of this country,
01:15 and we should never forget that we are very blessed to be Aussies.
01:19 Whatever has happened to me personally, I thank the Lord Jesus, it's a huge blessing for me.
01:24 I forgive whoever has done this act, and I say to him, "You're my son, I love you, and I will always pray for you."
01:37 And whoever sent you to do this, I forgive them as well, in Jesus' mighty name.
01:42 [Silence]
