"New quality productive forces" is a major concept put forward by Chinese authorities, but what does it mean in real life?

In episode 1 of CGTN Europe’s special series, we take a look at what the shipbuilding sector is doing to develop this idea.

00:00 In the port city of Dalian, this prototype ship is being developed to navigate and anchor itself in the future.
00:07 It joins one of a handful of so-called intelligent ships around the globe,
00:12 and researchers hope it will one day pave the way for the world's first unmanned cruise ship.
00:18 The pedestals on the deck are used to install various kinds of sensors.
00:22 As you can see, this is our newly installed smart sensor, which serves as the mariner's eyes and ears.
00:29 The interdisciplinary team working on the project has an average age below 40.
00:33 They are installing and testing the equipment that would allow the vessel to operate autonomously at sea.
00:39 The condition of the ship at sea is much more complex.
00:43 Sometimes there are influences from wind, waves and ocean currents.
00:47 That requires the autopilot vessel can identify and avoid collisions by itself.
00:52 The ship's systems must be highly coordinated with the help of tens of thousands of sensors.
00:59 On regular ships, there are only 500 such detection points,
01:03 but there are over 15,000 of them on this self-navigating vessel, about 30 times the number of regular ones.
01:10 We used to lack relevant experience to coordinate, integrate and apply such a complicated marine system,
01:16 and this is our first time to meet up with such a challenge.
01:20 The team members working on the ship are not all experts in sailing or traditional shipbuilding.
01:26 Many have computer science backgrounds instead.
01:30 The ships we can build are becoming smarter and more complex,
01:33 testing not only the shipbuilding process and technology,
01:36 but also our management ability to innovate allocation of production factors
01:41 and enhance the core competitiveness of our shipbuilding sector.
01:44 The continued success of the shipbuilding sector, including the development of autonomous vessels,
01:49 encourages growth in other sectors.
01:52 From specialized steel, high-end adhesives and new communication and navigation systems,
01:58 the supply chain for these impressive vessels is extensive.
