00:00 Executive produced by the Williams sisters, the documentary Copa 71 tells the story of the Women's World Cup held in Mexico,
00:06 a full 20 years before the first FIFA sanctioned event, and FIFA refuses to acknowledge its existence,
00:12 and much of the footage in this documentary has been seen for 50 years.
00:16 This was at a time where women's football was very marginalised and had been banned for decades in many countries,
00:22 including by the English FA, and some of the most infuriating parts of the doc are the players talking about the misogyny they face from their male peers and the press,
00:29 including being compared to dogs.
00:31 But there's also a fairy tale element to this story as well, as they land in Mexico and are lauded as heroes and celebrities,
00:39 as they play in these massive stadiums to enormous crowds, it becomes a huge event.
00:44 I'm not even into football, but this is a well-airted and well-told doc that got me swept up in the excitement of the matches.
00:50 It's a story that's as inspiring as it is frustrating.
00:54 These women were trailblazers to what we know the sport as now, and they deserve their recognition.
