Lord Cameron has described the situation in the Middle East as 'very concerning' but says he hopes Israel will act in a way that does not heighten tensions.

Speaking in Jerusalem ahead of talks with prime minister Benjamine Netanyahu, the British foreign secretary also said he hopes to see co-ordinated sanctions against Iran from G7 countries, because it is responsible for 'so much of the malign activity' in the region. 00:00 The situation is very concerning. It's right to show solidarity with Israel.
00:05 It's right to have made our views clear about what should happen next.
00:10 But it's clear the Israelis are making a decision to act.
00:13 We hope they do so in a way that does as little to escalate this as possible
00:17 and in a way that, as I said yesterday, is smart as well as tough.
00:21 But the real need is to refocus back on Hamas, back on the hostages,
00:26 back on getting the aid in, back on getting a pause in the conflict in Gaza.
00:31 That's why I'm here today to talk to the Israeli government,
00:34 to talk to the Palestinian Authority, to try and push those things forward.
00:37 We want to see coordinated sanctions against Iran.
00:40 Britain has in many ways led the way with our new sanctions regime,
00:44 sanctioning dozens of people in Iran, sanctioning the IRGC in its entirety.
00:50 And I think there's more that we can do to show united front
00:53 that Iran is behind so much of the malign activity in this region,
00:58 backing Hamas, backing Hezbollah, backing the Houthis.
01:02 They need to be given a clear and unequivocal message by the G7,
01:05 and I hope that will happen at the meeting.
