01:14 - What a noise.
01:17 (crowd cheering)
01:20 (crowd cheering)
01:23 (crowd cheering)
01:24 - Arsenal have performed by Munich the experience.
01:28 I wonder which will prove more decisive.
01:30 (crowd cheering)
01:33 So this is Arsenal.
01:39 Mikel Arteta has made changes tonight,
01:41 bringing in Jakob Kivio and Gabriel Martinelli
01:43 to the team that beat Brighton.
01:45 Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus
01:47 are the players who drop out.
01:49 Declan Rice and Kai Havertz
01:50 are booking away from suspension.
01:52 If they get one tonight, they'd miss the second leg.
01:55 Havertz along with Jorginho
01:57 are the two Champions League winners in the Gunners team.
02:00 Every one of Arsenal's starters
02:02 has scored at least one goal this season.
02:05 (crowd cheering)
02:07 The referee tonight is Swedish, 35 year old Glenn Nyberg.
02:16 And this is only his sixth Champions League game.
02:19 (crowd cheering)
02:22 There's the very experienced captain of Bayern Munich,
02:26 Manuel Neuer.
02:28 And he's waiting to be joined by Martin Oerlikar.
02:31 (crowd cheering)
02:34 Four Bayern Munich changes
02:45 from the weekend meltdown in the Bundesliga.
02:48 Eric Dier and Matisse de Ligt appeared at centre back.
02:51 Leroy Sane starts and replaces Thomas Muller,
02:54 but the most significant return
02:56 is captain Manuel Neuer in goal.
02:58 It's his 137th game in the Champions League tonight.
03:01 Harry Kane has 38 goals this season.
03:04 No introductions are necessary.
03:07 (crowd cheering)
03:10 So Harry Kane is back in North London
03:16 and Bayern Munich's main hope.
03:17 He's scored more goals than he's played games
03:19 for the Germans this season.
03:21 And back 14 and 19 against the Gunners with Tottenham.
03:25 And David Ryer is in his way,
03:27 the penalty shootout hero in the last 16 against Porto.
03:31 Well, there are no Bayern Munich fans here tonight,
03:38 officially due to the UEFA sanctions.
03:40 So there should be total support for Arsenal here
03:43 at the Emirates Stadium.
03:45 It's the 13th meeting, maybe unlucky for one of them.
03:48 The first for seven years, Bayern have seven wins
03:51 to Arsenal's three.
03:53 So the stage is set, the first leg of this quarterfinal
04:02 in the Champions League alongside Viali McCoyst.
04:05 We can't wait for this.
04:06 - Oh, what a game we've got.
04:07 Really have a great game in store.
04:09 I must admit, I came here tonight, guys,
04:12 and I fancied Arsenal really, really strongly.
04:14 I still do to a certain degree.
04:16 But I keep looking at the Bayern front players.
04:19 Boy, there's goals in them as well.
04:20 - So off we go.
04:21 What a quarterfinal we have in prospect.
04:23 The Premier League leaders bidding to reach
04:25 a Champions League semifinal for the first time in 15 years
04:29 against the third most successful side
04:31 in the competition's history.
04:33 And a team needing redemption in a season
04:36 that's been catastrophic by their own elite standards.
04:40 Owen Hargreaves here as well.
04:41 I mean, this is win or bust over two legs for Bayern.
04:44 - Yeah, this is Bayern Munich's season.
04:46 They could salvage it if they can find a way to get through.
04:49 Arsenal are big favourites.
04:52 But Ali made a great point.
04:53 The four players at the top of the pitch for Bayern
04:55 have plenty of quality, but behind the bleak goals
04:57 all season, it's hard to see it changing.
04:59 - And there's the first free kick tonight,
05:03 which is wasted by another familiar face
05:05 in the Bayern team, Eric Dier.
05:07 He's a familiar face as well.
05:09 Thomas Tuchel still here despite the disaster
05:11 at the weekend.
05:12 And the general malaise at Bayern,
05:14 he's leaving regardless in the summer,
05:16 but will his reputation be retrieved
05:18 in a competition that he's won before?
05:21 Header one there by De Ligt, who's back in the team.
05:28 And the first touch tonight for Serge Gnabry,
05:30 who came to Arsenal as a 16-year-old.
05:33 Tonight's the first time he's been back for eight years.
05:36 Saliva beaten to it by Kane.
05:43 - That was a fabulous touch here from Harry Kane.
05:46 Certainly worth a mention.
05:49 - Here's Konrad Leimer,
05:51 and Pavlovic, the young star, is on the bench tonight.
05:53 He's had tonsillitis, so it's Leimer in there
05:56 alongside Garetzka.
05:57 And here's Leroy Sané, who missed the weekend match as well.
06:01 And back starting tonight with the first ball in,
06:03 Gabriel's header, Kane challenging for it.
06:06 And it's cleared away by Arsenal.
06:09 And now it's with the captain, Martin Odegaard.
06:13 - I mean, the atmosphere in here is...
06:16 It feels like they've waited 14 years to get back to the 75.
06:20 - It's been first class, it really has.
06:22 The United got here early,
06:24 bumped into a couple of greats earlier on there,
06:27 Fletch Owen, Bob Wilson and Pat Rice,
06:30 had a quick cup of tea with them before the game,
06:32 and they were in top form, and they're, like every other Arsenal fan,
06:36 they're just absolutely loving what they've seen so far this season.
06:39 - Condition is ideal, Arsenal have only been beaten once in 13 games,
06:44 the first leg of the last 16 in Porto,
06:46 and while they were making light work of Brighton on Saturday,
06:50 Bayern were blowing a two-goal lead to Heidenheim,
06:53 who hadn't won the Bundesliga game until this season,
06:55 it was their ninth defeat all season, and their second in a row.
07:00 I mean, the mindset of the respective players coming here tonight
07:03 couldn't be more different.
07:05 - I think Fletch, I've got to say, Owen makes a great point,
07:07 you look at the quality that both sides possess in forward areas,
07:11 the fact that Arsenal have got the best defensive record
07:13 and conceded less goals than the Premier League would tell you,
07:16 and then they've got 19 shutouts this season,
07:18 at this moment in time you'd have to say that's probably the biggest difference.
07:22 - Well, there's Mikel Arteta into the quarter-finals of the Champions League
07:25 for the very first time, gradual improvement season on season is rewarded tonight,
07:31 and we wonder how far this journey will take him.
07:35 Full-time top scorer, Jürgen Klopp, has been taken by others.
07:39 - Alphonso Davies to Jamal Musiala, and then out to Joshua Kimmich,
07:44 who's the right-back at Bayern Munich these days, this place in midfield has been taken by others.
07:48 Sane running away from Declan Rice.
07:53 Musiala to Davies.
08:04 - He's got to be careful in there, he's got wonderful feet, great balance.
08:07 Young Musiala, here's Leiber, and now Dier.
08:11 Good start, this from Bayern.
08:13 - Yeah, no real surprise, a comfortable on the ball,
08:17 I think one of the key things they're trying to do,
08:20 and get it totally, get the ball quick to Nuri Sane.
08:22 - And then he goes towards Musiala.
08:29 Early pressure and possession for the multiple Champions League winners from Munich.
08:34 Bayern, the former Tottenham man hearing it from the Arsenal supporters,
08:55 and that's out for a throw-in, now we've got to tell you about this,
08:58 there's already been a goal in the Bernabeu,
09:02 and it's a fantastic start for the holders of the Champions League, Manchester City.
09:06 What a cheeky way to start it off, that's a fantastic goal in there from Bernardo Silva,
09:21 and nobody in the Bernabeu expected that.
09:25 - No, just for the record, I've only seen it once, but I ain't having a goalkeeper.
09:28 - So Manchester City, one up in Madrid, 0-0 here in the capital city between Arsenal and Bayern Munich.
09:40 Teams meeting for the 13th time tonight, the first time since 2017, when Bayern won 5-1 here,
09:46 and that's been the scoreline the last three times the teams have played against each other.
09:51 Manuel Neuer's got experience of quite a few of them, so important from a Bayern perspective that Neuer's starting tonight.
09:58 - I mean, Neuer in goal and obviously having Kane at the top of the pitch, he gives you a chance.
10:02 They've actually started quite well, Bayern keeping the ball.
10:05 I think Arsenal, clever, not forcing it, not rushing into it, be patient, plenty of time.
10:10 - There are players on a yellow card tonight, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz,
10:17 who start for Arsenal, the Bayern duo Alphonso Davies and Leon Goretzka,
10:21 so another one tonight, and they've missed the second leg next week in Munich.
10:25 It's in towards Havertz and flicked on, Declan Rice helps it slightly further,
10:46 and then with the flag up, Billict clears it away.
10:49 - Were you a little bit surprised doing no Thomas Miller?
10:55 - Possibly, I think experience-wise, but I just think Jamal Musial's the X-factor in there.
11:00 I think maybe Thomas Tuchel thinks against Jorginho there's a chance there.
11:04 - Leg back there by Saka, promising here for Arsenal.
11:06 Havertz holds it and gives it to Odegaard, here's Martinelli, chance to shoot, drags it wide.
11:12 First side tonight for Arsenal, Martinelli brought in by the manager,
11:16 he fires the first shot for them.
11:18 - I just had a quick look at Neuer there, he didn't know an awful lot about this,
11:23 and I think he was hoping it was going wide more than anything.
11:25 We've got a better angle here, this is Eric Dier,
11:31 enough to worry the goalkeeper of that, there's no doubt.
11:35 - That's Bayern Munich, they give you a chance, they've made so many mistakes.
11:41 Started the game well and then they give one away there, Arsenal will be there to pounce.
11:44 - It's going to be a fascinating battle on this side, isn't it, between Davies and Saka.
11:55 And the referee's an interesting man to keep an eye on tonight,
11:59 his first ever Champions League knockout game, so there must be nerves and butterflies for him.
12:04 Only 35, hasn't been involved in the Champions League too much,
12:08 and tonight he's got a big game here to run the rule over between these two teams.
12:13 I'm fascinated by this Saka and Davies battle there.
12:15 - Yeah, some great individual battles all over the pitch, that's one of the main ones.
12:20 He likes to cut inside Saka, he normally does it very well,
12:25 times he'll run across the front of the left full-back.
12:27 We all know how quick his opponent is, though.
12:34 - Dier patient enough, and then Gnabry not quite able to flick it on.
12:38 Coming together again, and we're going to get a yellow card here.
12:50 And that means that Alphonso Davies will miss the second leg in Munich,
12:56 that's a yellow card that takes him past the threshold and he'll be suspended next week.
13:02 - Yeah, it's a free kick, I mean, I've got to be quite honest,
13:05 you have to take minutes, I'm not thinking the referee's going to start throwing out
13:09 yellow cards for tackles like that, however he chose to make a mark and that's what he's done,
13:13 I thought it was a little bit soft.
13:15 - Yeah, I'm with you, Ali, I think it was probably Moussaka's reaction to the foul.
13:20 Again, maybe a younger free.
13:22 - I think he agrees with us as well.
13:30 - I think he also knows the significance of not having got his pace and he's starting left-back
13:37 for the second leg next week in the Allianz,
13:41 that's the first really significant moment tonight, the yellow for Alphonso Davies.
13:58 - Declan Rice decides to go short to Martin Oerdegaard.
14:01 Saka gives it back to his captain who's got Declan Rice in support out here,
14:08 hasn't moved very far since taking the Arsenal free kick.
14:11 Ben White looking to drift one out in the general direction of Martin Eli.
14:19 There wasn't quite enough room to operate in, the ball went out I think quite clearly.
14:27 - It has again now, it's going to be a goal kick,
14:29 I think they got the first one quite significantly wrong.
14:31 - I couldn't agree more with you.
14:32 My initial reaction was that,
14:35 you know, he'd taken a reasonable touch, I thought I'd just get away from him.
14:39 - Thomas Turco's just made his feelings known to the fourth official down there as well.
14:48 [Cheering]
14:58 [Fans chanting] - "Auld Lang Syne, every time!"
15:02 [Fans chanting] - "Auld Lang Syne, Auld Lang Syne!"
15:06 [Fans chanting] - "Auld Lang Syne, every time!"
15:10 [Fans chanting] - "Auld Lang Syne, every time!"
15:17 - Here's Declan Rice, William Saliba and now Urdegaard.
15:22 Ben White's run was designed to open up a bit of space up for Saka but Davies didn't move.
15:46 - Serge Gnabry's the player who's tracking the Arsenal right back when he gets forward
15:49 and there's Davies linking up with Saka again.
15:53 White can play it through Saka, promising goal!
15:56 [Cheering]
16:12 - Champions League elation at the Emirates!
16:16 A talismanic player with a monumental goal!
16:19 Bakaio Saka makes it Arsenal 1, Bayern Munich 0.
16:23 - The finish is magnificent, equaled by the pass.
16:29 The pass is unbelievable, I think, from Ben White to release Saka to hit it first time.
16:35 He gets up to the right side, you talk about giving the keeper a look at that, that's perfect.
16:39 Absolute perfect to hit first time, it completely takes Alphonso Davies out of the game.
16:45 He can get across and the finish is wonderful.
16:48 The pass to hit first time I think, Owen, is magnificent.
16:52 - And also for Saka to let that ball just run across him, it is so smart from Bakaio Saka.
16:58 And I love the fact he just passes it into the goal, even against one of the best goalies in the world.
17:02 You can beat him, hit the side netting, brilliant start for Arsenal.
17:06 Wonderful, wonderful start for Arsenal. And who else on a big night like this?
17:11 Bakaio Saka, he's played in eight Champions League matches this season for the Gunners.
17:15 He's been involved in eight goals, he's scored four, he's made four.
17:19 He's got 18 now in all competitions this season.
17:22 And when you need a big moment, you need your big players,
17:25 Bakaio Saka is the biggest around here in the red and white of Arsenal.
17:29 What a start for them.
17:31 - Oh, Fletcher, I mean, I've been reaving about the goal for the rest of the night.
17:35 It's just a perfect start from Arsenal, but the way to the pass, Saka lets it run through him.
17:41 And a guided, composed finish into the far corner.
17:44 It's just an absolutely wonderful goal and a wonderful start.
17:46 - Well, that's exactly what a big game needs.
17:50 And if you're an Arsenal fan, you've waited a long time to score a goal in a Champions League quarterfinal.
17:55 And there is no surprise whatsoever that the number seven,
17:58 a man who's so important for them, has delivered when it really matters.
18:00 - Oh, he's such a special player. He makes the difference.
18:03 I know they're all really good players. It's a great team.
18:05 It's an Arsenal team, I think, without a weakness.
18:07 But he's the one you can guarantee you get your goals and assists.
18:10 Most goals, most assists. He's just a diamond of a player.
18:14 I love the fact he just, he makes it look so easy.
18:16 You know, he just, everything is so effortless.
18:18 - Just passed it in, didn't he?
18:20 - Beautiful goal.
18:22 So first blood to Arsenal. Arsenal 1-0 Munich.
18:27 And let's see how the confidence of the German team is affected by that.
18:33 They've not dealt with knockbacks and setbacks particularly well all season,
18:37 particularly lately, and we'll see what kind of an effect that has on them tonight here.
18:41 In a cauldron-like atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium,
18:44 the fact they're in a Bayern Munich supporters' inn means it's total Arsenal support,
18:48 and they're taking advantage of that as well.
18:50 - Absolutely, but it is worth saying, I think the dramatic change in the atmosphere
18:54 in the stadium in the last 18 months, two years, has been there for everybody to see,
18:59 but it seems to have gone to a new level this evening.
19:01 [FANS SINGING]
19:03 - William Saliba.
19:11 Here's Jorginho, Champions League winner as a Chelsea player,
19:29 so was Kai Havertz, he got the winning goal that night,
19:31 they'd love to replicate that this season in the red and white of Arsenal.
19:36 Here's Oerdegaard.
19:37 Ben White, the player on the move, defending done there by Serge Gnabry,
19:48 but he breaks for Havertz.
19:49 Ben White's in for two!
19:50 Stated Neuer, that's a massive moment.
19:53 Great chance for Ben White, but Manuel Neuer, as he so often has,
19:57 stands tall for Bayern Munich.
19:59 - Yeah, but it's straight at him.
20:00 The first touch from Ben White's magnificent, the second one not so.
20:05 Look at the vision there from Havertz, brilliant.
20:07 He's getting played onside, that touch is magnificent.
20:10 He's got to have it either side of him though.
20:11 - He just didn't have a pitcher.
20:14 Saka had a pitcher when he went in there.
20:17 To be fair, Ben White has been brilliant covering that hole right hand side,
20:19 allows Saka to come inside.
20:21 Bayern Munich haven't found a solution to White.
20:24 - Well, let me tell you about two goals that have gone in in the Bernabeu,
20:27 in fact we can show them.
20:29 There were less than two minutes between them,
20:31 and Manchester City, from a 1-0 lead, are now trailing.
20:34 And it really has been quite the comeback for Real Madrid.
20:39 There's the deflection from Camo Vingas' shot, that went in off Ruben Dias.
20:44 That levelled it a 1-1 in Madrid.
20:47 And then Rodrigo, who broke Manchester City hearts in the semi-final a couple of seasons ago,
20:52 he's got the team that's won it more than anybody else in front,
20:55 in their own pitch, on their own pitch, in their own stadium.
20:58 With the roof closed tonight, that's quite a start in that one.
21:00 - What a game they've got over there.
21:02 The first one over to an element of fortune for Real Madrid,
21:06 but the second one looked a delicate finish.
21:07 - So Bernardo Silva for Manchester City,
21:11 Camo Vingas' shot deflected in off Ruben Dias,
21:13 and then Rodrigo to make it Real Madrid 2-1,
21:16 Manchester City 1-1, here, Arsenal lead through the Vakaio Saka goal.
21:20 Kibio.
21:23 And Jorginho is just slow to get back to his feet for Arsenal,
21:30 in the meantime, Havertz has it, now Gabriel,
21:32 and now Jorginho.
21:35 Arsenal starting to flow, the goal certainly settled them down.
21:38 Saka.
21:40 Benoit.
21:43 Klukman from Uruguay, and then tied it up in there by Musiala.
21:49 They just want to settle things down a bit,
21:52 and just get a foothold back in the game,
21:54 and look where David Rojo was, he was right out.
21:57 Dealt with by Gabriel, but then given away to Leroy Sané,
22:02 and that's a great run made by Leon Goretzka,
22:04 slipped through now for Ganabry, it's 1-1.
22:07 And the former Arsenal player returns to haunt them in the Champions League,
22:14 a young man who signed for this club at 16,
22:17 comes back to level in the Champions League quarterfinal,
22:20 the first time he's been back for eight years,
22:23 it's a big goal for Bayern, it's a special goal for Serge Ganabry.
22:26 - Well, the first thing I've got to say, Owen,
22:28 I mean, so un-Arsenal-like defensively,
22:31 carved up through the middle, through game passes,
22:33 the one from Kane, the one to Kane, and the one from Kane.
22:36 I mean, I don't know what the keeper's doing there initially,
22:39 he does get back, so we can't blame him for that particular losing goal here,
22:43 but this is a great ball into Hannah Kane,
22:44 other side of the defence, other side of Declan Rice,
22:46 and so is this, beautifully wicketed pass, that is fabulous.
22:50 I'm just wondering, could Ben White have stood offside,
22:53 maybe attempted to play him offside, I'm not so sure.
22:55 Finishes excellent, goes through the goalkeeper's legs,
22:58 perfect reply for Bayern Munich.
23:00 - I'll tell you what, what a ball from Leroy Sané and Garetzka,
23:03 with the weight of the pass, and Ganabry coming in from left-hand side.
23:07 They've got top players at the top of the pitch, they just showed that,
23:09 but Arsenal didn't need to give away that goal, they were so comfortable.
23:12 - Well, he's missed some games recently, Serge Ganabry,
23:16 but he's certainly in form, Arsenal have it now,
23:18 Saka coming on to another one and hitting it straight at Alphonso Davies,
23:21 what a game we've got here now, one all,
23:24 and Arsenal now back in possession with Declan Rice,
23:28 he's now scored four in the last five matches, Serge Ganabry.
23:31 Erdogan, really good defending in there by Garetzka,
23:35 who's shown his worth in both penalty areas, setting up Ganabry at one end,
23:39 and then a key block at the other,
23:40 as Arsenal were looking to get the noses back in front.
23:42 - I just think top-quality goals have seen,
23:46 I mean, the passing and the build-up towards, you know,
23:49 both goals I think have been absolutely first-class.
23:51 - The only point I would make,
23:52 with David Rye coming out as far as he did,
23:54 there was no pass back to the goalkeeper for Gabriel,
23:57 it made him do something else,
23:59 and they never really recovered, Owen, did they?
24:01 - Yeah, as Hugh nailed it, Gabriel was going to pass it back to Rye,
24:03 and he just threw him because he was so high.
24:05 Look, and you know, he's a little bit unlucky, Gabriel,
24:08 he tried to hit, I think it was into Declan's feet,
24:10 and he just missed him.
24:12 But credit, you know, credit Sane and Garetzka,
24:15 they were terrific passers,
24:16 just can't leave big gaps against these top players, they'll hurt you.
24:19 - And second taken down this time by Luciano,
24:23 two wonderfully talented young players on either side of the ball tonight,
24:26 I mean, it certainly started the way we thought it would.
24:28 - Oh, absolutely.
24:30 The one thing I would say, guys, and we'll get another look at it,
24:33 I'm not sure, I think he probably could have gone back to the goalkeeper after it.
24:37 You know, initially he couldn't, because the goalkeepers came out, I get that,
24:40 but I thought when Riyad dropped off he might have been able to,
24:43 but certainly his positioning was really questionable, there's no doubt about that.
24:46 - So 1-1, Thomas Tuchel and Mikel Arteta knowing the importance and value
24:56 of a big performance from their respective teams tonight.
24:59 Free kick to Arsenal, Declan Rice over it for them.
25:02 And an extremely high line being held here by Bayern Munich,
25:07 and Eric Dier the man who's doing the majority of the organising for them.
25:10 -
25:20 In by Rice, is that a handball over there? Not quite,
25:24 the referee was looking straight at it, and it's Rice again.
25:26 Looking to play it out there to Martinelli,
25:30 that's a wonderful ball by the England international.
25:32 Alphonso Davies on the wrong side for now with defending to do.
25:40 Jorginho.
25:40 Martinelli.
25:43 Glanced on there by Kipi Ort,
25:46 and he got himself into the box for the free kick and stayed there,
25:49 and that's claimed by Manuel Neuer.
25:52 Bayern's overall four of five defeats in ten games since early February,
26:07 the last two against Borussia Dortmund and Aydinheim at the weekend,
26:10 they've only kept one clean sheet in 14 games now in all competitions,
26:14 and of course that's a big concern against this team.
26:17 Harry Kane not happy having tangled there with Gabriel.
26:21 -
26:22 I think he made a bit of a point there.
26:24 -
26:25 To be fair, the one thing, Bayern are playing a lot of long balls into Harry,
26:28 you know, they're not really trying to play out, get caught,
26:30 trying to play direct into Harry and then feed off him.
26:32 -
26:34 I think Eric Dier in particular, who's trying to drop them in,
26:36 I don't think he's got his range correct just yet,
26:38 but I think he's trying to drop them in, isn't he?
26:40 - Jorginho,
26:48 cushioned away by Dier to Alphonso Davies,
26:51 the goal scorer Gnabry.
26:53 Ben White finding Martyn Urdegaard,
26:57 and that's gonna be an arseful throw, the last touch of Davies,
27:00 the Canadian international.
27:01 -
27:04 There's Dier.
27:06 Lifted away by Leimer,
27:19 Harry Kane up against William Saliba,
27:21 this time on winning his side,
27:23 the free kick.
27:24 Let's have a look at the goal again,
27:27 and then just clear up the David Rye position of whether he was an option.
27:31 -
27:32 Yeah, I think Rye wanted to claim that initially.
27:35 That would have been a tough pass, you know,
27:39 and I think back to him there,
27:40 because he's on his left, he's facing forward.
27:42 It was so avoidable, I think, for Arsenal.
27:46 - Oh, yeah, there's no doubt about it.
27:48 I'm maybe not picking a lot,
27:49 but I'm thinking Gabriel could maybe be back a little bit,
27:51 kind of left back position, knocked it in,
27:53 but the two passes, Gareth's pass is absolutely fantastic.
27:57 Do you think, opening up a bit of arse,
27:59 could Ben Waiter perhaps have stepped out there?
28:01 I don't know.
28:01 - Possibly, but the thing is, he's been attacking so much,
28:04 he's been such a great outlet,
28:05 maybe it was, you know, it's a big run.
28:07 I was always wary of trying to play offside there
28:09 when you're running back.
28:10 Sometimes if you get it wrong, it's a goal.
28:12 So you'd have to say it's a great counterattack from Bayern Munich.
28:15 - They are the leading scorers in the Bundesliga,
28:18 despite the fact they're so far behind Bayern Leverkusen.
28:21 The issues for them have been at the other end of the pitch,
28:24 and that's something that Arsenal hope to exploit over the two legs.
28:27 -
28:31 Here's De Ligt, who played the semi-final for Ajax.
28:34 Dier, who started well at centre-back,
28:37 he's been organising things,
28:39 and he's been nice and calm back there for Bayern Munich.
28:41 - Still a bit to go, Darman.
28:43 - Is that an indication you've not got too much faith in Eric Dier tonight?
28:53 - No, I'm just loathe, I think it's one of those games
28:56 that all defenders are going to have to be on their toes
28:59 and concentrate for the entire match.
29:01 I mean, we saw the goalkeeper, David, right there.
29:03 If it wasn't a brainstorm, he certainly shouldn't have been there.
29:07 And as we've mentioned already, the quality we've got on showing forward areas,
29:13 defenders have got to concentrate for the entire match.
29:17 - That's Harry Kane.
29:21 It's a wonderful ball that was lifted in as well,
29:24 and it just skidded on in front of Musiala.
29:28 Good idea though from Kane.
29:29 - It was a great one, I'm just wondering if Musiala gave up on it
29:32 because he thought Gabriel was going to reach it, I'm not sure.
29:34 But anyway, it was a good ball from Kane, and a good forward run.
29:37 - Bayern Munich are setting a record tonight
29:48 by playing in their 22nd Champions League quarter-final,
29:51 which is the most of any club in the Champions League era.
29:54 They've won it six times, the last one behind closed doors in Lisbon in 2020.
29:59 Saka just has it nipped away from Serge Gnabry,
30:03 but this is the first quarter for Arsenal tonight.
30:05 We know just how inventive and dangerous they are from situations like this.
30:08 - Yeah, brilliant on set pieces.
30:11 I'll tell you what, Serge Gnabry's put a shift in, hasn't he?
30:13 Back and forth, Danner's left-hand side, Saka and Benoit are making him work.
30:23 - So let's have a look at the Arsenal set-up.
30:25 Mikaio Saka is out to take it, Gabriel is often the centrepiece of situations like this.
30:31 He attacks the ball so well from corners for Arsenal.
30:33 And the run's all the way towards the near post, and Neuer didn't get there.
30:44 They can't get it out, and eventually the Bayern Munich captain falls on the ball.
30:49 But he came a long way, was nowhere near it when it came in.
30:51 - No, it should have been flicked on, I think.
30:53 It might have been Saliba at the front post, he probably tried and should have got a flick on it.
30:59 But the movement from Arsenal at the corners in particular is excellent,
31:03 and very difficult to pin down.
31:05 They start with three boys at the back post area,
31:07 and just as the ball is about to be taken, they make forward runs, very difficult to pick up.
31:12 - That's an important foot in that side from Kivi Oronke.
31:16 You might just hear an impromptu firework display,
31:30 which has just started behind the stand opposite us.
31:33 I'm not sure whether they've gone too early or whether they've missed the sack of goal.
31:36 Either way, it's not very good timing, is it, Andy?
31:39 - No, I have to say, that one's baffling me some more at this moment in time.
31:46 - It's quite impressive, I wish we could show it to you, but we can't.
31:48 We've got to concentrate on the match.
31:49 One back there for Bayern by Leimer, gets it back again then from Gnabry.
31:54 Here's Kane, off goes Sane, full of running through the Arsenal midfield,
31:59 but tied it up well back there by Gabriela.
32:01 I mean, he's on a run at the moment, I worry,
32:03 hasn't scored for 23 matches, Leroy Sane,
32:05 but he's such an explosive player when he's got the ball.
32:07 - You nailed it.
32:08 I mean, Sane on that right-hand side and Gnabry off his left,
32:10 they've got so much pace to get into those gaps.
32:12 And Musiala as well.
32:14 Harry looks like he's going to drop off and play some of those boys in.
32:17 Final pass has to be there, though.
32:19 - Seven attempts to this point from Arsenal,
32:28 just the one for Bayern Munich, but they've got a 100 per cent strike rate.
32:31 The chance converted by Serge Gnabry, hence the scoreline of 1-1.
32:35 [CROWD CHANTING]
32:53 - Saliba just selling Urdegaard a wee bit short,
32:55 Lymer was quickly in there.
32:56 He's got a big job to do tonight, hasn't he, Lymer?
32:58 I mean, he wouldn't be first choice by any stretch of the imagination in there.
33:02 - No, definitely not.
33:03 Obviously young Pavlovic is on the benches,
33:05 who's been terrific in that midfield.
33:08 He can play right back, can play centre-mid.
33:10 - Excellent run here from William Saliba,
33:14 and the door eventually closed by the Austrian international Lymer.
33:17 It's Musiala, he can't prevent himself from falling over,
33:23 and the free kick given to Bayern.
33:24 - He actually did well there, protecting the ball,
33:28 take the pressure off the Bayern defence a little bit.
33:31 [CROWD CHANTING]
33:34 - Big difference in terms of experience at this stage of the competition for Bayern Munich.
33:38 They've got eight players still in the squad who won the Champions League
33:42 the last time they won it.
33:43 So they are players, it is a team that's used to being involved at this stage.
33:47 That's a fantastic turn for Sane,
33:49 then look at the acceleration to run away from Kivir.
33:52 What a brilliant tackle.
33:53 Oh, he's gone over in the box, it's a penalty!
33:55 He tangled lips to Liba,
33:59 and it's a penalty to Bayern Munich.
34:01 - I'll tell you the first thing you've got to mention,
34:05 the bit of skill from the goalkeeper to start the move.
34:07 Fletch, it's unbelievable, he flicks up with his right foot
34:10 and knocks up his left foot to the right back.
34:12 It's incredible.
34:13 He comes across him, I think it's a penalty all day.
34:15 Catches him, I don't know whether you agree, Owen,
34:17 but I think he catches his left leg.
34:18 There.
34:20 Yeah, I've got that down as a penalty, I'm afraid, all day.
34:23 - Again, it's just the pace of Sane,
34:26 he's just so quick, gets into those gaps.
34:28 - It's an easy decision for the referee.
34:32 - Really positive and really direct though, weren't they?
34:35 And you know what it's like when you're going at pace,
34:37 defenders don't want to touch you.
34:38 - You're right, that skill from Neuer
34:41 to set that counter-attack up was ridiculous.
34:43 - I mean, you and I looked each other, sorry Fletch,
34:48 Owen and I looked each other,
34:49 immediately flicked up with his right foot,
34:50 knocked up his left foot, incredible.
34:52 - Yeah, fantastic, but that was at the start of the move,
34:55 and Harry Kane now wants to be the man that gives it
34:58 the perfect finish.
34:59 He's got a wonderful record of scoring against Arsenal
35:06 in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt.
35:08 Tonight he wears the colours of Bayern Munich,
35:10 and he's up against David Ryer at the end,
35:12 where he was the penalty hero in the last 16 against Porto.
35:16 Kane won't be hurried.
35:21 -
35:30 Up steps the England captain and calmly rolls it into the corner.
35:34 And Arsenal's tormentor in chief, Harry Kane,
35:38 is back to strike against them again.
35:40 Arsenal's lead is gone,
35:42 and Bayern Munich lead in North London by two goals to one.
35:45 - He just knew, he just knew, you're watching him.
35:49 He focuses, he concentrates,
35:51 there's a small delay in the run-up,
35:54 watches the goalkeeper get down and just rolls it,
35:57 there he is, there's a wee look, brilliant.
35:58 He just saw a wee, there's a look, there he has a look,
36:01 knocks it in, brilliant.
36:03 Really confident and a very brave thing to do.
36:05 - Yeah, we're so used to that Harry Kane,
36:08 whipping it to the left into the side net
36:10 and did the exact opposite, little hesitation.
36:12 - It's a significant goal in terms of the scoreline tonight,
36:16 it also means he's the leading scorer now
36:18 in the Champions League this season,
36:20 and he joins Kylian Mbappe on 39 goals,
36:23 which makes him the joint leading scorer
36:25 in the top five European leagues.
36:27 And whenever you've scored more goals
36:28 than you've played games for your club side in a season,
36:31 you know just how good you've been.
36:32 - No, it's never in doubt,
36:34 I mean, there's always a talk about subplots in this particular.
36:37 Kop-tie, and Harry Kane coming back to North London rivals
36:42 was always a subplot.
36:43 - That's straightforward, towards the run of Musiala,
36:48 and David Rye with time to wander back into his box and pick it up.
36:51 So test of character from an Arsenal perspective now,
36:54 having gone ahead, big night, now they're behind.
36:56 - Yeah, maybe a bit of inexperience on the two goals they conceded,
36:59 they were so comfortable, two attacks by and have scored off really.
37:03 But they've got to hang in there,
37:05 they're so much more stable this season,
37:07 but this is a big test for them.
37:09 - I think you're 100 per cent right,
37:12 I think the goals they've lost have been so un-Arsenal-like,
37:15 if you wouldn't mind me saying so,
37:17 I just think they've been terrific this season,
37:19 we talk about their centre-backs,
37:20 they've conceded the least goals in the Premier League,
37:22 but the first goal they got carved open with two brilliant passes,
37:26 I have to tell you, and a lovely finish,
37:27 and then they got undone there with the pace,
37:31 and the direct play of Leroy Sane,
37:34 who, in my opinion, was brought down,
37:36 the referee, as you say, had an easy decision to make.
37:39 - Well, they knew each other really well at Manchester City,
37:42 Leroy Sane, Mikel Arteta, Salah spoke in the build-up
37:45 about the relationship they had,
37:46 they got on very well, but he won't have enjoyed
37:49 seeing him do his stuff here at the Emirates tonight,
37:51 the Arsenal manager.
37:52 So, Arsenal 1, Bayern Munich 2,
37:54 and the same scoreline in Madrid,
37:58 but in Real Madrid's favour,
37:59 Manchester City were a goal up,
38:00 and they've come from 1-0 down to League 2-1,
38:03 in the other match taking place in the quarter-finals tonight.
38:06 A fantastic night in the Champions League already.
38:08 Saka challenged by Gnabry, throw-in to Arsenal.
38:12 (Cheering)
38:14 Odegaard did really well there, under real pressure,
38:26 Saka did equally well,
38:28 Odegaard shoots, good block in there by Garetzka.
38:31 Wonderful football from Arsenal, so slick and sharp.
38:33 - A lot of the best still coming down the right-hand side,
38:35 there's no doubt about that,
38:37 involving Odegaard, Saka and indeed Ben White.
38:39 (Cheering)
38:41 - Mikel Arteta keeps saying to Ben White,
38:52 "Go into midfield, go into midfield."
38:54 He's in his natural right-back position,
38:55 keeps saying, "Go inside."
38:56 - Way back in by Jorginho,
39:03 vital defending in there by Garetzka,
39:05 Saka was ready to pull the trigger.
39:07 Now there's the break on,
39:09 and not many catch Leroy Sane from here.
39:11 He's in here for Bayern Munich.
39:13 Tracking back was Ben White,
39:15 who did magnificently well.
39:17 Brilliant defending from Ben White, that's outstanding.
39:20 - That's exceptional defending from Ben White,
39:22 that's ridiculous defending from Arsenal in the fourth place.
39:25 I mean, that's schoolboy defending, that is.
39:28 - Odegaard's second.
39:30 Garetzka the offender.
39:36 I mean, getting back to that incident there,
39:38 oh, I cannot believe,
39:40 I cannot believe what Arsenal were up to defensively.
39:42 Ben White does brilliantly get back,
39:43 and that's a free kick all day.
39:44 - I mean, that's a bookend.
39:45 I mean, if the Davies one is a bookend,
39:49 I mean, that's a bookend, but you're right.
39:50 They don't need to leave these big gaps.
39:52 They could just commit in too many bodies forward,
39:54 and Bayern will hurt you.
39:55 Credit to Odegaard, by the way,
39:57 I didn't think he had that pace in him to get back.
39:59 He just delays Leroy Sane ever so slightly,
40:02 and allows Ben White to get back in.
40:03 - Yeah, and he doubles up on him.
40:06 But initially, it's a ball straight through the centre
40:08 in middle of your defence.
40:09 It's inexcusable, that.
40:10 - Hasn't scored since the 28th of October,
40:13 and you wonder as you got nearer and nearer the Arsenal goal,
40:15 whether the question started to go through his mind
40:17 and just slowed him down a little bit.
40:18 - I think he was probably just knackered for this.
40:20 That's the worst run ever, if you've got a sprint 80 metres.
40:22 - So free kick to Arsenal, taken by Declan Rice,
40:28 and headed wide by Gabriele.
40:30 Got a fair deal of power on that, didn't he,
40:32 from a long way out.
40:33 - Yeah.
40:34 Floated in by Declan Rice, a bit of quality.
40:36 Mind you, it's going to take some header from there to beat
40:39 a man of that quality.
40:41 - Now don't forget, we've got more Champions League games tomorrow night.
40:44 Paris Saint-Germain against Barcelona,
40:46 seven o'clock TNT Sports 1 and Discovery Plus,
40:50 but on TNT Sports 2 and Discovery Plus,
40:53 you can see Atletico Madrid against Borussia Dortmund,
40:56 and we've got the Europa League and the Conference League on Thursday,
40:59 including the games involving Liverpool,
41:03 West Ham United and Aston Villa as well.
41:07 So quarterfinals all around this week
41:10 in the European competitions on TNT Sports
41:13 and right across Discovery Plus as well.
41:14 It's been a quiet night on that side for Joshua Kimmich,
41:23 as you mentioned a few moments ago,
41:24 the majority of the Arsenal work has been down Saka's side,
41:27 down the right.
41:28 Here's Harry Kane.
41:32 - They can boo him as much as they like,
41:34 it won't faze him whatsoever.
41:35 In fact, he'll be lifted by that.
41:36 You must have loved that when you used to go to places
41:38 and hear it from the crowd.
41:39 Did you think, "I'll show you lot"?
41:41 - Well, like my old mother used to say,
41:43 "Fletch, there's nothing worse than getting ignored."
41:45 - They certainly won't ignore the England captain here tonight,
41:53 I can promise you that.
41:53 - Did you expect him to receive a different welcome,
41:57 having Eric Dier to the one he's receiving,
41:58 just out of interest?
42:00 - Thinking back to the conversation we had
42:01 at Stamford Bridge last week,
42:02 I won't be discussing welcomes or reactions
42:05 at all with you again all season.
42:06 Laila.
42:10 Header won by Saliba.
42:12 Musiala finding Davis, but he couldn't hold it.
42:15 Here's Saka for Arsenal.
42:17 One back by Jamal Musiala.
42:18 Excellent work from Erdogan.
42:21 Jorginho, and now space for Declan Rice.
42:25 Martinelli, now there's work for Kimmich to do.
42:31 -
42:42 Gretzka across there firmly and fairly for Bayern.
42:44 Supported here by Kimmich.
42:46 Time now for Kane.
42:54 -
43:04 That kind of thing just makes Martinelli that little bit more popular.
43:07 - Yeah, it's...
43:08 Kind of foolish though, isn't it?
43:11 -
43:25 They're closing them down quickly, aren't they?
43:27 Eric Dier, that there's no doubt.
43:28 - Lovely layoff there to Erdogan.
43:32 That's really good play by Gretzka.
43:33 How often is...
43:34 - Yeah.
43:34 - ...in the first half is he pops up
43:35 in a really important defensive position for Bayern?
43:38 -
43:46 Roberts to Wight, cleared up by Gnabry.
43:48 - Now to be fair, Gretzka and Lange are getting through a lot of work.
43:53 - There's Gabriel.
43:57 Kibio.
43:59 -
44:09 Saliba on the move and finding Saka.
44:11 Five minutes to go in the half.
44:14 Good challenge in there by Davies.
44:24 -
44:33 Gabriel.
44:51 Jorginho.
45:01 -
45:07 Erdogan, Conrad Leimer's challenge.
45:10 Arsenal want to get on with it.
45:11 It's noticeable that when they do drop back into a defensive shape,
45:15 they still leave Sane, Musiala and Kane high up the pitch.
45:18 It's not a case of everybody back.
45:20 It's not the way they do it.
45:22 -
45:24 Erdogan's flick looking to try and get Saka
45:26 and the Bayern gets him behind for the corner.
45:29 -
45:29 You know, you mentioned it already,
45:31 how dangerous Bayern can look,
45:33 whether it's on the counter,
45:35 but the front players have got serious quality.
45:38 Ah, that's half Arsenal, of course.
45:40 -
45:47 So Saka out to take the Arsenal corner again.
45:50 -
45:54 Second one tonight from this side for the Gunners.
45:56 -
45:58 Plenty of movement towards the near post,
46:00 and Neuer's not going to get there again,
46:02 but the referee spotted a foul in there.
46:04 -
46:05 He's got that delivery spot on, hasn't he?
46:07 From this side into such a good area of the Kajo Saka.
46:10 - It's a brilliant delivery, it really is.
46:11 You can see the troops arriving front post.
46:13 -
46:14 It's a little bit unlucky.
46:15 I think it's Gabriel initially gets his head to it.
46:17 -
46:19 Well, just to let you know as well about some exciting news,
46:22 TNT Sports and Discovery Plus
46:24 will be home to the Autumn Nations Series,
46:27 and some of the biggest matches in world rugby
46:29 will have all 21 games live,
46:31 kicking off with England against New Zealand
46:33 on the 2nd of November.
46:35 -
46:41 Here's Jakob Kivio for Arsenal.
46:43 Kai Havertz was the furthest forward,
46:44 the lick was there for Bayern.
46:46 -
46:54 The lick thought that was a fair challenge,
46:56 but he did take a fair piece of Havertz
46:58 as he jumped for the ball.
46:59 -
47:00 Yeah, getting back to what we were talking about earlier on,
47:02 there are two lads in the middle,
47:03 Sutton Limer and Gretzker,
47:05 looking through a power of work,
47:07 a lot of unnoticed, but not half doing well,
47:09 covering the two centre-backs.
47:12 - And that's impressive, Arlie,
47:13 you know, Navreed doubling up with Davies,
47:15 and they did it with Kimmich on the other side,
47:17 and putting such a shift in.
47:19 - I think it's been remarkable, really,
47:22 because they've looked so poor in the Bundesliga,
47:24 but I was in Munich the night they beat Lazio,
47:26 and they looked like Bayern Munich,
47:27 then they reverted to type in the league games,
47:29 and now they're here again tonight,
47:30 and in this competition,
47:32 they've found that a little bit more again.
47:33 - I think they've got a bit of experience
47:35 fletching these games,
47:36 and it's probably shown.
47:38 I think they've come for a smashing grab,
47:39 and so far, you know, they've got it,
47:42 but I think Arsenal need to hang in there,
47:43 be patient, not give away big spaces at the back.
47:46 They'll get their chances,
47:47 they just need to be clinical.
47:48 You think about Martinelli and Havertz,
47:50 haven't really had a kick in the game.
47:51 - I think you make a good point pre-match as well,
47:58 and this is effectively their last throw to the dice,
48:01 you know, in a major tournament.
48:02 Well-documented, Leverkusen will be winning that Bundesliga,
48:06 so this is it for Tuchel and Bayern Munich.
48:09 - Champions League all-burst routine,
48:12 that's what it's so often,
48:13 and they've got their noses in front tonight,
48:15 despite falling behind early to the Bukayo Saka goal.
48:19 Final minute of this first half,
48:21 we're expecting a minute to be added on.
48:41 William Saliba.
48:42 With 60% possession in the first half,
48:52 Arsenal have created six more chances than Bayern Munich,
48:58 eight to two,
48:58 Bayern have converted the two they've had to this point
49:01 through Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane.
49:03 It's one of those games where you'd love to be a fly on the wall
49:08 at half-time to see how the respective managers go about
49:12 getting their messages across to their players.
49:14 - I think Tuchel will be delighted,
49:16 I think he'll be absolutely thrilled to be the first half going to Berlin.
49:19 The truth, I think Arsenal started very, very well,
49:22 but I think Bayern have just shown a maturity and an experience,
49:26 match-win ability to come back into the game.
49:30 - Saliba has had a fantastic half out there on the right.
49:38 That's this man in the middle, Leon Goretzka.
49:40 Eric Dier.
50:05 Oh, we're finding Davis, but he can't hold it.
50:07 Maybe a last chance here and a half for Arsenal.
50:10 It's Kai Havertz.
50:11 And the offside flag up for that initial run from Havertz.
50:17 And there's half-time.
50:20 And we are a quarter of the way through this.
