00:00 There were calls for an investigation after Wirral's £20 million seawall failed to stop
00:05 homes and businesses being flooded. On Tuesday April 9th, as stormy weather battered Merseyside,
00:11 water from waves crashing against the newly formed West Kirby seawall spilled over the
00:15 top onto South Parade. The flooding brought with it many questions from local people about
00:20 the effectiveness of it. Construction on the controversial project was completed in 2023,
00:25 coming in £10 million over its initial budget. The council's leader, Paul Stewart, explained
00:31 the local authority went ahead with the project based on recommendations from the Environment
00:35 Agency who funded £13.5 million towards the project and was a major backer of the scheme.
00:41 However, he said drainage was an issue that needed to be fixed going forward. Councillor
00:46 Stewart said he'd be pushing on the council and the Environment Agency to seek to address
00:51 the drainage issues and explain to residents what is likely to happen in similar weather
00:56 conditions in the future.
