00:00 Historical events, unfortunately, as time goes on, often become drowned out or worse, forgotten,
00:06 especially by the younger generation. That's why it is the duty of those who have come before to
00:11 make sure this does not happen, especially to such significant parts of history like the Battle
00:16 of Yultong. Naomi Tabursa gives us a historical refresher in this feature story. If you are often
00:24 hooked on a video streaming app, TikTok, you may be no stranger to random comments such as these.
00:29 That appear on random videos. According to social media experts, bombarding random videos with
00:47 comments about certain topics is a way to help the topics boost in the viral scene. But what
00:52 is the Battle of Yultong and is this topic really worth knowing? We met with Philippine News Agency
01:00 veteran defense journalist Ben Cal to tell us why. He said the Battle of Yultong was one of
01:08 the more decisive armed clashes that took place in the Korean War in the 50s, in which North Korea
01:14 attempted to conquer South Korea. North Korea received help from China and the then Soviet Union,
01:20 while South Korea welcomed the landing hand from United Nations member countries. Overshadowed by
01:27 two big wars, including World War II and the Vietnam War, the Korean War is often called the
01:33 Forgotten War. Despite this, the Philippine government, under the leadership of then President
01:38 El Pidio Quirino, made a significant decision of sending more than 7,000 troops, in which Philippines
01:44 was among the first countries to rush to South Korea's aid. The Philippines was the first nation
02:00 to send combat troops during the Korean War in 1950. For the Filipino soldiers, the Battle of
02:10 Yultong was the bloodiest encounters they fought in the Korean War. Around 40,000 Chinese and North
02:17 Korean volunteers and soldiers launched their biggest offensive in the Yultong Bridge. Because
02:22 of the massive attack, other South Korean allied troops abandoned their post, but not the 900
02:29 strong Filipino soldiers who stood their ground and killed 500 enemies in the process. In return,
02:38 dozens of Filipino perished, was injured and went missing. Because of their dedication,
02:44 Captain Conrado Yap and Major Maximo Young received the highest military honor in South Korea.
02:51 Also, one of the soldiers sent in the war was former President Fidel V. Ramos, who was a second
03:15 lieutenant at the time, who led to victory another important battle against the Chinese
03:20 communists, the Battle of Erie Hill. The heroism of the Filipinos showed in the Korean War. Despite
03:33 the fact that we are not a rich country, but when it comes to patriotism, the love of country,
03:44 the love of country, the love of country, the love of country, the love of country, the love of country, the love of country. The first war fought by Filipino soldiers in a foreign country also became their first win. And though many years have passed, more than 7,000 Filipino soldiers proved their uncommon courage and commitment in defending freedom and democracy.
