Leeds locals reflect on childcare costs and support
Transcript
00:00 Childcare in this country is blooming expensive. I know I've got friends who've got kids I have and mainly for that reason it's just too expensive.
00:07 And I seem to remember when I was a kid, we didn't even have to pay for nursery. It was just a standard thing within the curriculum that we went to.
00:15 There definitely needs to be more places but everything needs to expand to accommodate everything that we're throwing at it.
00:21 I'm in a bit of an unusual position. It was really good for us when we had the 30 hours free childcare.
00:26 Obviously my daughter's now in school and I'm a teacher so we don't need childcare throughout the summer holidays or the holidays generally.
00:33 But I think any extra free or reduced childcare for working families is always a good thing in my view.
00:39 Obviously I'm out of the age range where childcare is a problem.
00:43 But I do understand that for a lot of working families it's a very, very major expense and I don't really know what sort of assistance they get.
00:52 I do understand that it is a problem and it probably prevents a lot of people from going to work.
