Gen Z workers prefer 'multiple gigs' -- survey

Dr. Fernando Paragas, UP College of Mass Communications dean and lead researcher of the Philcare Wellness Index, and Joseph Augustin 'Jaeger' Tanco, president of Philcare, explain to The Manila Times the results of the 2023 Philcare Wellness Index that showed Gen Z workers choosing to work multiple 'gigs' as opposed to the older Gen X and Gen Y employees.

00:00 I saw on the data of PhilCare that there are more Gen X or Gen Z people working now
00:10 than Gen X and Y.
00:12 Do you think it's because it's more of a generational thing?
00:21 Yeah, because for example, in Gen X and to some extent in Millennials,
00:26 we were really raised with the idea of an 8 to 5 job.
00:30 And that is the sole, if not the main, it's really the main type of employment.
00:39 It's an 8 to 5 work.
00:41 But it started with the fact that there are different ways of working.
00:47 And we learned that, not only in traffic, we have a lot of time
00:53 other than your 8 to 5 job.
00:56 So there are a lot of things you can do.
00:58 Of course, we see that.
01:01 Of course, sometimes, the kids, because I see them now,
01:05 most of my younger friends,
01:10 my friends who are in the same age,
01:15 they see their future as being more stable than being...
01:20 They want stability in their lives.
01:24 As opposed to what I see in Gen Z, in my Facebook feed,
01:29 they're more, let's say, carefree.
01:32 Are they more carefree now, these Gen Z?
01:35 That's the aspiration, to be carefree and to be more free in the 8 to 5 job.
01:44 Because if you think you're tied to your job, you'll have an 8 to 5 job.
01:48 So your aspiration is to be free, to get out of being tied to the 8 to 5 job.
01:53 That's the aspiration, but what is the reality that you will earn enough
02:00 in your rockets, and you will have enough savings for retirement,
02:06 because you don't have health services, right?
02:09 Or health card, for instance, if you're working for a big company.
02:12 So maybe in the beginning, you can experiment,
02:17 but if you have more responsibilities, you're already a family member,
02:20 the sense of responsibility will kick in.
02:24 Probably you would need a more stable job,
02:28 but that is the situation right now because we're in,
02:31 in a sense, it's a period of change.
02:35 But who knows, maybe further down the line,
02:38 that there will be stability in being carefree.
02:43 So maybe with the awareness of health services companies,
02:47 maybe they are more likely to insure individuals,
02:51 to offer better services for individuals.
02:53 For example, you can save more on your insurance if you're in a corporate,
02:58 because there's a big package, and then you can save more
03:02 if you're part of a big package.
03:05 But if the community of individual workers with insurance is bigger,
03:11 the pathway can be more reasonable.
03:14 For example, in the past, in the SSS, there was no freelance, independent contract.
03:21 But now, there is.
03:23 In the BIR, there was no such thing before, so now there is.
03:27 There are freelance tax models.
03:30 So there is a slow realization, but now there is momentum.
03:35 So we'll see eventually, there will be stability in being carefree.
