00:00 Member for Hughes. Thank you Deputy Speaker. Last Saturday I attended the 70th anniversary
00:06 of the Loftus Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, a steadfast pillar of support for our local
00:11 community. Deputy Speaker, down in my part of the world we live in the best part of the
00:16 best country in the world, but the land of droughts and flooding rains takes its toll.
00:22 That's why Loftus Bushfire Brigade is such an important part of our local community.
00:27 Its support extends not only to the residents of Loftus and the Sutherland Shire, but throughout
00:32 the whole of New South Wales. Particularly locally, the Brigade has responded to incidents
00:37 at the Caltex ore refinery, as well as many motor vehicle accidents, and also provides
00:43 crews for hazard reduction. This is a vital activity for our community as we adjoin the
00:48 Royal and Heathcote National Parks. The Brigade also plays a vital role in education with
00:54 bushfire preparedness, and year after year the Brigade receives tremendous support from
00:58 its local Santa runs. The strength of the Loftus Brigade also lies in its diversity,
01:04 with operational members ranging from the age of 19 through to 92. Volunteer members
01:09 of the Brigade come from a wide range of vocational and professional backgrounds, as well as defence
01:15 and emergency services. It currently has 14 new probationary members, which is setting
01:20 it up for a very fine future. In closing, Deputy Speaker, on behalf of my electorate,
01:25 I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Loftus Bushfire Brigade. To all of you who
01:30 have been or are part of the Brigade, thank you for your service.
