00:00 >> This in the Super Bantamweight division,
00:03 as we see Riverside, California's Ezequiel Flores
00:06 take on the undefeated fighter hailing
00:09 from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico in Alfredo Castro.
00:13 TJ DeSantis along with Abel Sanchez, Doug Fisher.
00:16 We're live tonight inside Chumash Casino Resort,
00:19 all part of Tom Loeffler and 360 Promotions
00:22 Hollywood Fight Nights.
00:29 >> You know, when we spoke to Castro yesterday,
00:31 he showed up with some sunglasses,
00:32 looked like Clark Kent in disguise of a Superman,
00:35 didn't he? >> Yeah, he does have a very
00:37 meek, understated look, at least outside of the ring.
00:41 This will be my first time ever seeing
00:42 this young man in action.
00:44 I couldn't find anything, you know, on YouTube
00:46 of any previous fights, so...
00:49 We're gonna learn real soon what his boxing identity is.
00:54 I believe he told us, we asked him, like,
00:55 who are some of the fighters that he grew up watching
00:58 and that he really admired,
00:59 and one of the names was Oscar de La Hoya,
01:01 and he said that his fighting style was kind of like that.
01:05 We'll see.
01:06 >> Ezequiel Flores in the black with gold lettering
01:09 on the belt line.
01:11 In the black with gold trim is Alfredo Castro.
01:14 >> Mark, go, be the first to make the move.
01:17 Be the first to make the move.
01:19 >> With Flores, there is some fight footage of him,
01:22 including that loss to-- one of his losses,
01:25 his last fight against Amado Vargas,
01:28 who's one of the sons of former two-time
01:31 junior middleweight champ Fernando Vargas,
01:33 who was 9-0 at the time.
01:35 And I would say Flores acquitted himself well.
01:38 He lost the fight, but it was competitive.
01:41 He showed me a little something.
01:42 Showed he could switch hit, sort of decent jab,
01:46 nice straight right.
01:48 He could switch hit, and from a southpaw stance,
01:51 he has a decent straight leg.
01:53 >> Well, tonight, we're gonna see Flores deal
01:55 with this long length, as you mentioned, Doug.
01:57 71-inch reach for Alfredo Castro is 6 inches longer
02:01 than Ezequiel Flores, which is interesting
02:04 'cause you see Castro only 2 inches taller,
02:06 but that is not telling the story
02:09 of the difference in wingspan.
02:11 >> Stop, right break, step away, separe, pelea.
02:18 >> Abel, when you have a fighter who is as long as Castro
02:21 and has a reach advantage, how much do you implore them
02:24 in camp to try to utilize that reach
02:26 and get them, you know, aggressive?
02:28 >> You know, you want to implore them to use their reach
02:31 and to get distance, but a lot of guys
02:33 just like to fight inside.
02:34 >> Right.
02:35 >> Their DNA just tells them they want to be bangers
02:37 on the inside, but I don't like the way Castro's
02:41 hanging over so much.
02:42 He's like crunched up, he's a little tight.
02:45 Maybe that's just his style or he's a little nervous.
02:50 >> Again, Castro fighting for the first time
02:52 in these United States.
02:56 Taking on a kid who's fighting at his home state,
02:59 Flores Hales from Riverside.
03:01 >> Right stop, right break.
03:06 >> Clutching up here against the ropes,
03:07 Jack Reese separates the two.
03:09 >> I like the pressure that Flores is putting on Castro.
03:22 And I like that he's trying to rough him up inside,
03:25 disrupt the young man's rhythm,
03:28 try to get in his head a little bit.
03:32 They're both landing heavy shots.
03:35 >> Stop, nobody punch, stop.
03:37 >> Almost ten seconds to get a separation.
03:47 >> Here we go, first round in the books,
03:49 the game's scheduled for six.
03:56 Look inside the corner here of Alfredo Castro.
04:00 Your thoughts, Abel, on the first round, turn it?
04:02 >> I thought Flores did a great job of switching
04:06 and trying to confuse Castro.
04:09 Castro's fights have all been in Sinaloa and in Mexico,
04:13 so this style of Flores is very strange to him right now.
04:20 >> I scored the round for Flores.
04:21 >> Yes.
04:22 >> I thought he landed the better punches.
04:25 And it did seem like he flustered Castro
04:27 just a little bit.
04:29 >> No, but you want to, I'll say this, though,
04:31 I think that Castro's power, I can see his power,
04:34 I can see his power in his punches.
04:35 And if you look at this young man's face,
04:37 he's getting a little marked up
04:38 because he does have very heavy hands.
04:43 >> Doug, you mentioned that round on your scorecard
04:45 going to Ezekiel Flores.
04:47 I mean, how much of that was attributed to his pressure?
04:49 Would you like to see that keep up?
04:51 >> That was half of it.
04:52 But pressure alone is not going to win a round.
04:54 You have to land punches,
04:55 and Flores landed some right hands
04:59 to the head and to the body.
05:02 And that's what really swung in his favor.
05:03 It was actually a close round.
05:05 It was competitive because, as Coach just pointed out,
05:09 Castro's landing shots, and you can see that
05:11 in the red spots on Flores' face.
05:14 >> Nice right hand there a moment ago by Flores.
05:17 [crowd shouting]
05:20 >> Going to the body is Castro.
05:31 It's an uppercut there.
05:33 >> And I say that about the style with Flores
05:37 because in Sinaloa, maybe he didn't meet anybody
05:40 that was-- that switched so well,
05:42 that was-- had the experience that Flores has in the U.S.
05:46 So maybe the opponents in Sinaloa
05:49 were more standing in front of him
05:50 where he could knock them out.
05:51 >> Right.
05:52 >> Flores is not going to do that for him.
05:54 [crowd shouting]
05:57 >> Finally, I'm seeing a jab from Castro.
06:00 [crowd shouting]
06:03 >> Somebody just asked for it behind us.
06:05 [laughs]
06:07 >> Educated fan base here in Sinaloa.
06:09 >> Yeah, so I was about to say, these are real fans.
06:11 >> Halfway point here of round number two.
06:14 [crowd shouting]
06:15 >> Oh my goodness!
06:17 Beautiful knockdown by the Mexican,
06:21 Alberto Castro.
06:23 >> Four, five, six, seven, eight, come here.
06:25 >> Flores, Jack Reiss laying in the count.
06:27 >> You want to continue finishing here?
06:28 >> I think that was a right hand.
06:30 >> Right hand.
06:31 >> It traveled like, what, four inches?
06:32 >> Yeah, that's the power I was talking about.
06:34 >> You saw it.
06:35 >> Yeah.
06:36 [laughs]
06:37 >> Flores recovered, coming alive once again,
06:40 trying to send him to the canvas.
06:42 >> Get out of there.
06:43 >> This is Alberto Castro.
06:44 >> Stop, stop.
06:45 >> I know we're on UFC Fight Pass,
06:46 but I don't think you can do take downs like that in boxing.
06:49 >> A little inexperienced on Castro's side.
06:51 He was a little too close to him,
06:52 crowding himself with the shots.
06:54 He needs to extend those.
06:56 [crowd shouting]
06:59 >> 45 seconds left here in round number two.
07:02 Alfredo Castro with a dominant knockdown a moment ago
07:06 of Ezekiel Flores, but Flores surviving for now.
07:10 >> Stop, everybody stop, stop, stop.
07:12 >> And punches once again.
07:13 >> Stop, stop, stop.
07:14 >> And gets another take down.
07:15 >> You all right?
07:16 Come here.
07:17 Give me your gloves.
07:18 >> Just a minute.
07:19 >> Did you get the time out?
07:20 Come here, you all right?
07:21 Don't grab his head and jump down on him.
07:22 You good?
07:23 Give me your gloves.
07:24 >> Give me that jab, dude.
07:25 >> Box.
07:26 >> Give me that jab.
07:27 [crowd shouting]
07:31 >> Back to action here.
07:32 Final 30 seconds of round number two.
07:34 >> There's a little cut on Flores' right eye.
07:36 >> Turn around, turn around.
07:37 Box.
07:38 >> Yeah, I think it's on that.
07:39 >> Left eye, left eye.
07:40 >> Yeah, it's on the eyelid too.
07:43 >> Stop, stop, stop.
07:44 >> It's towards the corner, the outer corner of the eye.
07:46 >> Well, he believes that.
07:47 >> But it is, it's dripping blood a little bit.
07:49 >> Stop at the bell.
07:50 >> Flores doing a good job at slowing things down.
07:54 A few moments here of the round.
07:56 A couple more punches land.
07:57 [bell ringing]
07:58 >> Hey!
07:59 >> And Flores able to survive, but what a statement made
08:04 by Sinaloas Alfredo Castro.
08:07 >> I was bleeding out with a cut.
08:09 >> That cut could have been caused by the right hand
08:12 when it touched on that side.
08:13 [crowd shouting]
08:16 >> Let's take a look at that action.
08:18 Doug Fisher walking through.
08:20 >> Yes.
08:21 >> That was a right hand off the ropes and a short right hand.
08:25 That glove did not travel far, although he did wind up with it.
08:30 And it looked like Flores was winding up with the right hand
08:34 of his own, adding to the impact.
08:37 [crowd shouting]
08:47 [whistle blows]
08:49 >> Let's take a look at that knockdown one more time.
08:53 >> Flores crowding Castro against the ropes.
08:55 Castro finding the power, finding the leverage.
08:58 >> That was beautiful.
09:00 >> Round three underway.
09:02 Ezequiel Flores still very much with it after being dropped hard
09:07 in round number two.
09:08 We'll see what he has here in this third frame
09:10 against Mexico's Alfredo Castro.
09:12 >> That was a nice uppercut Castro landed a minute ago.
09:16 Seconds ago.
09:20 >> Doubles up on that left hand is Flores.
09:26 Still very much thrown the way of Castro is Flores.
09:32 >> You know, for a young fighter, Castro, as awkward as he looks
09:35 at times, he is mixing his punches up and down.
09:37 He's mixing levels, which is very good to drop hands and to
09:40 show different directions.
09:44 [crowd shouting]
09:49 >> Trying to get out of this corner here is Flores.
09:51 He does.
09:54 Oh, nice right hand.
09:55 >> Great right hand.
09:58 >> Flores has come to fight.
10:01 See if that changes the demeanor of Castro.
10:07 >> I think for the first time in his professional career, Castro
10:10 is in there with a fighter who wants to win as badly as he does,
10:14 but also has the ability and the experience to make something
10:18 happen.
10:20 >> Sneaky uppercut there a moment ago by Flores gets through.
10:24 Flores showing us a lot of spirit right now as he switches
10:27 stances.
10:31 >> As we saw, he was down, but definitely not out in this
10:34 fight.
10:42 >> Castro's landing a real nice right hand to the body.
10:45 Kind of an uppercut.
10:52 I think he needs to use that.
10:58 >> Inside the final minute here of round number 3.
11:01 >> That was the same punch that put Flores down in round 2, the
11:04 one that just jacked his head way back.
11:08 >> You can see Flores closing the distance, grabbing that
11:10 clinch.
11:12 >> Can then separate 45 seconds left in the round.
11:15 >> Honestly, I thought Flores was winning this round until
11:18 Castro was able to land those right hands.
11:20 >> Might be a bit of a cut, opened up underneath the left eye
11:23 of Castro.
11:25 >> Did you see that?
11:27 >> A small mouse.
11:29 >> That was probably a clash of heads.
11:31 >> Right hand.
11:33 Those are definitely finding a home for Flores.
11:36 >> Flores may win this round yet.
11:40 >> Beautiful uppercut on the inside by Flores.
11:43 >> That was off a combination, it was a right to the body, then
11:45 the right uppercut.
11:47 >> And a left hand there.
11:48 My goodness, final 10 seconds of this third round.
11:51 >> Hell of a round.
11:59 >> And let this fight thus far be an example of why Tom
12:03 Loeffler's Hollywood Fight Nights is on UFC Fight Pass.
12:06 This is what you tune in on Fight Night to see.
12:10 Both of these gentlemen are giving it to us.
12:13 >> Back and forth, but as Doug said, the beginning of the round
12:16 was Flores, the middle of the round was Castro, and then I
12:19 think Flores came back and uppercut and a left hook.
12:22 >> He scored the round.
12:24 He scored round 3 for Flores because of right hands like we
12:27 just saw him land in this replay.
12:29 Castro coming back with a right hand of his own.
12:32 There's that beautiful right uppercut.
12:34 Flores lands, but Flores is eating punches as he's landing
12:37 these punches.
12:39 That was probably the best punch of the fight, that short right
12:42 cross on the inside landed by Castro, but Flores rages back.
12:45 You love the spirit you see from Ezekiel.
12:50 And so because of that second round knockdown, I've got it 2
12:53 to 1 in rounds for Flores, but because he suffered a knockdown
12:56 in round 2, it's an even fight after 3 rounds, 28-28.
13:00 >> You know, we talked about it, Flores on a two-fight skid,
13:03 he's, you know, taking on an undefeated fighter from Sinaloa,
13:07 Mexico, and Castro.
13:09 Castro getting a much different look, though, fighting out of
13:12 Mexico for the first time here in his U.S. debut.
13:15 And, man, he's seen everything that Ezekiel Flores has for him.
13:19 >> And welcome to California.
13:21 Welcome to the U.S.
13:23 You're not going to get a lot of gimmies here.
13:29 >> I knew Flores would be game and confident, because those
13:34 losses were to, you know, the first one was to a prospect
13:38 turning pro named Kermel Moton, but that guy was considered like
13:43 a super prospect.
13:45 He's like an understudy of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
13:48 And then Amado Vargas, you know, he was 9-0 and the son of a
13:51 great fighter, Fernando Vargas.
13:54 Those losses were to really good fighters.
14:00 >> His left hand right there by Flores.
14:04 The output here of Castro has changed a bit, still lighting
14:07 his feet and moving, but he definitely has to respect the
14:12 shots and power coming his way from Ezekiel Flores.
14:20 Flores talking to him a little bit here.
14:24 >> I think he's feeling himself.
14:25 I think he's regained his confidence with that last round
14:28 and as well as he's doing so far.
14:31 I definitely think those losses to Kermel and to Amado, they
14:37 lit a fire in his belly.
14:39 He does not want a third loss.
14:42 He wants to prove something to himself, not just the boxing world.
14:46 >> Halfway point of round number four.
14:48 >> He's more active in this round, too, so he's the one
14:51 pressing the fight.
14:52 He's the one doing the necessary to try to win.
14:55 >> He set the pace and it's effective aggression.
15:01 Which doesn't mean that Castro can't set up a trap and use that
15:04 aggression against Flores.
15:06 >> Right hand on the left.
15:08 Nice punches getting through for Castro.
15:10 >> Come on, let him go.
15:11 Pull your arms out.
15:14 >> Two minutes down, one to go here, round number four.
15:17 >> Nice left hand by Castro.
15:27 >> Where's that power?
15:28 >> Flores might have got buzzed a little bit.
15:30 I saw some give in his legs just a bit.
15:34 And Jack Reese noticed it, too.
15:36 >> Good right hand, hurt him.
15:37 Good right hand.
15:40 >> Covering up on the ropes here is Flores.
15:43 Castro leads another left.
15:46 >> I like this aggression from Castro.
15:48 He's finishing this round strong.
15:50 Will it be enough to win the round?
15:53 >> Touching his way off the ropes is Flores.
15:55 Final few moments here in the round.
15:57 >> Wow, tough round.
15:59 >> We are headed to round number five.
16:02 >> What a fight this is shaping up to be.
16:05 >> And not easy to score, either.
16:08 >> No, tough round to score this one.
16:11 >> I can see it going either way.
16:13 >> I gave it to Castro because I think Castro hurt Flores.
16:17 >> You heard him a couple times.
16:19 Buzzed him a couple times.
16:21 >> This is professional boxing.
16:23 But again, I think it highlights the fact it's a very competitive fight.
16:27 Both men having their moments at times.
16:30 That's why it's hard to put a stamp on who won the round.
16:36 >> And TJ, it goes back to what you asked about the international experience.
16:40 The experience of the opponents of Flores is evident here.
16:44 He's got more tools to work with.
16:47 Castro is limited in that respect.
16:49 >> And Flores just came taunting Castro.
16:54 Fighting is as much mental as it is physical.
16:58 And we are here in the fifth round.
17:00 We'll see what happens.
17:03 The undefeated fighter hailing from Sinaloa, Mexico,
17:06 Alfredo Castro in the black with gold trim.
17:09 Riverside, California, Ezequiel Flores in the black with gold lettering in the belt line.
17:14 TJ DeSantis, Abel Sanchez, Doug Fisher.
17:16 Appreciate joining us live here tonight on UFC Fight Pass.
17:19 Inside the Chumash Casino Resort, the site of Tom Woffler's Hollywood Fight Nights.
17:24 >> If I'm in Castro's corner, I don't allow Flores to back me up.
17:36 I have to make sure and be aggressive, be moving forward as he's--
17:39 as he's leaning back, he's on his back foot and he's getting caught with shots
17:42 he shouldn't be getting caught with.
17:43 Right there is where he needs to be working for me.
17:45 >> That right hand a moment ago by Flores definitely gonna back you up.
17:50 Trying to work the body is Castro.
18:05 If you're just joining us, this has been a heck of a fight thus far.
18:09 In the second round, Castro had put Flores on the floor with a lot of danger there
18:18 for the fighter hailing out of California, but Flores has rallied back
18:23 and has very much made a fight of this one halfway point of round number five.
18:27 Oh, that's right hand.
18:33 >> That's a great exchange right hand.
18:35 >> Oh, uppercut there.
18:38 >> There's a lot of leverage, there's a lot of power at the end of Castro's shots.
18:45 If he could just tighten up his technique a little bit,
18:48 because there's a little bit of a loop, he wings his shots, yeah.
18:52 And he's not terribly fast either, but there's a heaviness,
18:56 there's an impact to all of his punches.
18:59 >> Yeah, you can see the difference in power when they go shot for shot.
19:02 >> Yeah, and I think that's where Castro is getting the bigger reaction.
19:06 His punches are landing with more punctuation than that of Ezekiel Flores.
19:11 >> Kind of reminiscent of another UFC fight past Tom Laffer fighter, Omar Trinidad.
19:23 His punches have that kind of thud also.
19:25 >> Yes.
19:26 >> Of course, he has more power.
19:28 >> Yes.
19:29 >> Round number five.
19:32 >> His floors is landing his shots, it's just not as effective power wise.
19:42 >> Little few moments here, round number five.
19:52 Oh.
19:58 What a fight.
20:00 Through five rounds, we are headed to the final round.
20:05 Abel, what do you see?
20:07 >> Yeah, I think Doug and I are in agreement that Castro took that round close round.
20:17 >> There's a man who's had success in this building, Sir Hypoa Chuck,
20:20 to be fighting for the WBC World Super Welterweight Championship in Las Vegas,
20:25 sitting ringside with Tom Laffer.
20:28 And I don't think you have to be a fighter to appreciate what we've seen in this one through five rounds.
20:37 Guys, what do you expect here in this final round?
20:39 I mean, a fight where we've seen one man planted on the floor,
20:43 but he's been very game and game enough to make this a competitive fight.
20:47 >> I think we're going to see more of the same from Flores,
20:49 which is bringing the fight, applying pressure.
20:52 I think we're going to see more aggression and a slightly higher punch output from Castro,
20:57 if his corner toe is in the right thing, because I think he needs to do that.
21:01 I have a-- he's ahead on my own official scorecard by two points,
21:04 but the rounds that I've scored for Castro have been very close, very competitive.
21:10 >> Right hand, that's two punch combination for Flores to start this sixth round.
21:16 Upper cut, and a right hand again by the Californian.
21:21 >> Let's go, baby, let's go!
21:23 >> Very aggressive here as Flores to start this final round.
21:38 >> You know, I've noticed, Doug, in the last several rounds that Castro seems to not do too much
21:48 fearing he's going to maybe tire out by the end, and he kind of comes on in the second half of the round,
21:53 but he's given away some great shots to Flores here.
21:56 >> I think that's something they're going to have to work on.
21:58 He needs to be dialed in for three minutes of the round and letting his hands go,
22:02 especially in this situation.
22:05 I think he's making a mistake by not standing his ground and being more aggressive.
22:10 At the very least, if he's going to give ground and move around,
22:14 he should be smacking Flores with that jab and snapping it,
22:18 not just putting the left hand out there.
22:20 That's something they need to work on as well.
22:22 They need to sharpen up his jab.
22:24 >> Minute and a half down, minute and a half to go.
22:28 >> Stop, stop, stop, stop.
22:29 >> Castro complaining about a shot to the back of the head.
22:31 >> Flores is fighting like a man who knows he needs his round.
22:37 >> Oh!
22:40 >> The exchange, kind of right hooks.
22:43 >> Sueltelo, sueltelo.
22:44 >> I think that one for Flores was one of the better shots that he's landed,
22:48 snapping the head back of Castro.
22:50 Now entering the final minute of the fight.
22:55 >> Sueltelo, pre-run or something like that.
22:57 >> Right hand again by Flores.
23:05 It'd be a very important round.
23:12 Oh my goodness!
23:13 >> Great left hook, great left hook.
23:15 >> Flores in control here as we head down the stretch.
23:17 >> Oh!
23:18 >> The Mexican firing back.
23:20 >> What a fight this has been, 30 seconds left to go.
23:26 Jack Reiss separates the two.
23:28 >> Well, the right hand finds a home for Flores.
23:37 Goes to the body.
23:39 [crowd cheering]
23:41 >> Oh, another left hand.
23:46 Final 10 seconds of the fight.
23:48 >> Oh!
23:49 >> Oh my goodness, Castro!
23:50 >> Trying to put an end on it.
23:52 Flores almost falls on our announcing table.
23:55 >> Unreal.
23:56 >> The bell sounds the end of the fight.
24:01 >> Flores was winning that round.
24:03 I was just about to score it for Flores.
24:05 >> My goodness.
24:06 >> And he gets dropped.
24:07 >> One of the best fights you're ever going to see
24:09 in any combat sport.
24:11 Hollywood fight nights delivering in a big way.
24:15 >> We still got more after this.
24:21 There's only a second fight of the night.
24:23 >> He almost fell on your lap.
24:26 >> I know.
24:27 >> I'm just glad his head didn't hit any of the monitors.
24:30 >> Abel Sanchez, like a superhero.
24:32 You see those reactions?
24:33 Cat-like.
24:34 >> Oh my goodness.
24:35 >> Like a-- yeah, swooping into the rescue.
24:37 >> Getting back to that knockdown,
24:39 how important was that for Castro?
24:41 >> I think Castro needed it.
24:43 I thought he was on his way to losing that round.
24:45 And, you know, the fight was up for grabs, really.
24:49 >> Look at--
24:52 >> Okay, so there's a right hand
24:53 followed by another right hand as he was teetering back.
24:56 Wow.
24:57 That punch hurt him, and that punch took him off his feet
25:00 and through the ropes.
25:03 >> Yeah.
25:04 >> And Castro, I mean, so committed to trying to keep
25:07 that onslaught going, he follows him to the floor.
25:09 We'll see if it was enough to get the job done.
25:13 I mean, again, a very contentious fight.
25:16 But, I mean, two knockdowns, almost insurmountable
25:19 to come back from that for Flores.
25:21 >> Yeah, especially over six rounds.
25:23 >> Six rounds, yeah.
25:24 >> You know, it could have been a draw
25:26 if that knockdown had happened,
25:28 but it has to tip the scales, and it's a big fight.
25:31 It has to tip the scales in Castro's favor.
25:34 >> What a fight it was.
25:42 And the stars have come out.
25:44 The King, Callum Walsh, back in action,
25:46 coming up at Madison Square Garden.
25:49 That goes down just a couple weeks,
25:51 and the King on his feet for these two gentlemen
25:55 putting on a show here tonight inside Chumash Casino Resort.
26:00 Judges tallying their scorecards.
26:04 >> I just, I can't get over that.
26:06 Yeah, it would have been 57 to 57,
26:09 a draw on my unofficial scorecard,
26:12 had Flores not gotten dropped in the final ten seconds.
26:15 >> But a very decisive knockdown,
26:16 as you mentioned, in the final moments of the fight.
26:18 >> That knockdown takes it from potentially 57 to 57
26:22 to a 58 to 54.
26:25 >> Wow. >> You got that swing, yeah.
26:26 >> That's a huge swing. >> I know.
26:29 >> Only in boxing.
26:33 >> What a show turned in by Ezequiel Flores
26:36 and Alfredo Castro.
26:39 All right, the judges have tallied their scorecards.
26:42 We are ready to crown a winner.
