The most common reason for failing and MOT was lighting and signaling. Switch all your lights on and walk around your car to check they're in working order. Next was suspension - Pay attention to noises made by your car during everyday driving – particularly during cornering or when passing over bumpy roads. Last was brakes. Listen out for squealing or grinding noises while driving.

00:00 We're in a funny situation at the moment, a bit of a cost of living crisis. People are
00:05 really looking after the pounds and pennies and things like that. So what we're experiencing
00:10 is people are getting their cars MOTed, getting a pass, and then they've got a year of motoring.
00:16 But there's also advisories within that MOT that do need to get looked at, do need to
00:20 get sorted out, ready for the next year. I think it's important for people to look at
00:24 that and look at maybe potentially things they can do themselves and look at places
00:29 like eBay to source some parts that would be a bit cheaper than going to a main dealer
00:34 type thing. But yeah, it's important to look at what advisories your car has got when it's
00:38 been MOTed.
00:39 The most common reason for failing an MOT was lighting and signalling. Switch all your
00:44 lights on and walk round your car to check they're in working order. Next was suspension.
00:48 Pay attention to noises made by your car during everyday driving, particularly during cornering
00:52 or when passing over bumpy roads. Last was brakes. Listen out for squealing or grinding
00:57 noises while driving.
00:59 Check for safety as well over your vehicle. Tyres, checking your tread depth, your tyre
01:03 pressure, things like that. Check if you've got any noises in the vehicle, making sure
01:07 there might be some lumps and bumps that you've experienced, potentially suspension problems.
01:12 So get that checked out.
01:13 In your opinion, what are the sort of common advisories that come up or common problems
01:18 that come up that can be fixed ourselves if we just look into it a little bit and do our
01:22 research?
01:23 Yeah, there's plenty that people can do on their own cars. Things like bulbs. So get
01:28 a friend to help you to check the bulbs on your vehicle. You can replace those yourself.
01:34 Also wiper blades, top up your screen wash, things like tyres, just simple things like
01:40 that which you don't need a lot of experience for. Obviously there are things such as brakes
01:45 and suspension which you would need a mechanic to look at, but there's plenty of things people
01:49 can do for themselves, especially prior to an MOT. So check for those things before it
01:55 goes and obviously look at where you can get your parts from.
